he can be covered head to toe in a rash. >> a muddy race in the north bay ended with hundreds of people sick, and now they are suing. participants in the tough mudder obstacle course. went home with brutal rashes and infections after crawling through the mud at sonoma raceway. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. it's really something. one year later, tough mudder owner spartan race incorporated is facing a lawsuit. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone broke the news of the

illnesses last year and digs into the case. >> this is what the tough mudder event at the sonoma raceway looked like last year. lots of mud and hundreds of participants who ended up with rashes. days later we did the saturday event and then also the sunday event. >> and on that monday morning we woke up completely covered head to toe in a rash, and not to get too graphic, but they were, you know. >> evan goldsmith has filed a lawsuit against tough mudder for negligence and emotional distress, among other things. in addition to getting rashes like this shown in pictures sent to us last year by participants who got them after the race. evan and his wife were both also sickened for several weeks, impacting their work and family. >> we drove home that monday morning from northern california down to southern california, and by the time i got home, i had a really bad headache. i had fever. it was really apparent at that point that, you know, we

actually needed medical attention. >> dozens of people who were sickened after this race reached out to me last year. it's unclear if they are involved in any current lawsuits. >> i look like i have a severe rash on both sides. you wake up the next day and you're like, what is all of this on my arm? like, what is going on here? and it's on both arms. and i was just covered in these, these like pimply red blister pimple type things as to what it was. >> goldsmith's attorney, ellen dexter, who represents nearly 150 plaintiffs with similar allegations, say the rashes were caused by aeromonas, a bacteria sometimes found in untreated water. >> they used what is called a non-potable source, a hydrant that has water that is not filtered. they pumped it in areas where the participants are swimming and crawling around, and then if the participants weren't going to get sick on the race course, they pumped it in the shower. >> goldsmith had done more than

40 of these races before getting sick last year. would you do another race again? and what are your feelings going forward? >> no, i wouldn't, and it breaks my heart, honestly. we did reach out to tough mudder for clarification on what happened, but are waiting to hear back. >> and just to expand on that, i reached out to tough mudder last night also today and have not heard back. they also did not respond last year when i put this story together. at that time it was the sonoma county health department that issued an advisory in light of the hundreds of cases. ama now back to you. wow. >> all right j.r. thank you. we move now to an update to an i-team investigation involving countless californians scammed out of their life savings. tonight congress is looking into the crypto con industry with bay area prosecutors leading the push for national change. >> i come before you today as a fellow american who is witnessing the single worst financial attack on individual

president is rolling out these updated policies after stanford's pro-palestinian protest made national headlines. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez looks at the changes and the reaction >> this week, stanford university is welcoming students back to campus with the start of the school year comes new and clear rules on speech and events. last spring, pro-palestinian encampments went up sporadically amid the israel-hamas war. the contentious time led to student arrests, barricades and graffiti on several buildings. on tuesday, stanford released what are called the freedom of expression policies. unauthorized tents will be prohibited. students concealing their face may be asked to identify themselves by a university official. in a video, the provost explains other disruption policies. >> a provocative poster may be okay in some places around campus, but not placed on the personal residence door of an

individual targeted by that speech. >> white plaza has long served as a place for student gatherings. this is where we saw the encampments set up. stanford's new president is vowing to enforce the no camping policy, which was already in place last term. >> this is the problem with how colleges and universities have approached the challenges of policing free expression to the extent they're allowed to, is that it's inconsistently enforced. so what you get are double standards. >> nico perino is with the foundation for individual rights and expression. >> i think colleges and universities have learned their lessons from the past year and are better prepared with their policies and their practices to avoid being caught up in the maelstrom at the end of may. >> stanford's faculty senate formally adopted an institutional neutrality statement, making stanford the third university behind harvard and syracuse at the time, to remain neutral on social and political issues. >> it gets administrators out of a lot of tricky problems,

particularly surrounding an election year. they say, hey, our hands are tied. we have this institutional policy. we're not commenting. you students, faculty, you have the debate out in palo alto. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> and tomorrow, uc regents will vote on whether to approve requests for military equipment for campus. police officers are asking for more drones, robots, pepper balls, projectile launchers and sponge bullets. the requests are from several campuses, including uc berkeley, ucsf, and uc santa cruz. uc officials claim police are not requesting anything that is military grade after campus protests tensions the uc student association says they're troubled to see campuses invest money in these kinds of weapons. >> sean diddy combs will be staying in jail. he was back in court today and again denied bail after being charged with sex trafficking and racketeering. the music mogul appealed to the court, saying he's trustworthy and should be released on a $50 million bond. they offered to secure the bond

with combs $48 million home, cosigned by a number of close family members. the judge says there is sufficient evidence that combs is a danger to the community and witnesses. >> all right. let's turn now to the accuweather forecast. after another really weird weather day. in some respects, we're tracking changes ahead that will have us feeling like it's a little more like summer. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> sandy. yeah. dan. and as it should, because we still have a few more days of summer to go and it is already looking like it. from our live pictures, you can see all the fog just shrouding our area. that's how you're going to start off the morning. visibility is down to three quarters of a mile and half moon bay. definitely watch out for the fog. there may be a little mist around as well. temperatures in the 50s tomorrow morning. sun around the bay and inland at noontime, and it's a little bit warmer at 4 p.m, low 60s to low 80s. temperatures getting up closer to average. breezy and cooler in the evening. we do have major changes coming as we hit the

weekend. i'll be back with that forecast coming up, ama. >> all right. thank you. we'll check back. sandhya. time now for our deep dive, where we take an in-depth look at an important issue. tonight we are focused on deep fakes and the growing concerns about technology's impact on our democracy. california governor gavin newsom signed legislation this week to ban deep fake ads, videos using artificial intelligence to impersonate political candidates. now, a man who made a fake campaign ad for vice president kamala harris is suing to stop the law. >> i do have those three bills that i can sign today with you or not. it's just up to you. i just i happen to bring them. >> that was the governor putting salesforce ceo marc benioff on the spot as he signed three ai bills at the dreamforce conference yesterday. the lawsuit followed hours later, claiming the deep fake law forces social media companies to censor speech. governor newsom has said the legislation took on a new urgency after elon musk posted the fake campaign ad on

x, where an artificially generated harris describes herself as a deep state puppet. >> well, the x owner is facing increasing scrutiny for sharing election misinformation. today, lawmakers in the u.s. senate intelligence committee bashed misinformation on the platform at a hearing on deep fake election threats. >> i think it is a real shame that in the previous investigations, twitter was a very collaborative entity. under x, they are absent and some of the most egregious activities taking place. >> executives from meta, microsoft and google parent company alphabet testified before the u.s. senate intelligence committee about threats to the election. musk did not send a representative to the hearing. >> san francisco will be at the center of post-election talks on artificial intelligence safety. the biden administration will hold a summit here with nine countries and the european union commerce secretary gina raimondo says a major focus will be

scrutiny in february when a man on campus fired several shots into the air. students were not notified about that incident until 40 minutes later. >> developing news now out of lebanon after at least 20 people were killed in a wave of explosions of handheld radios. this comes one day after pagers exploded across lebanon. those explosions injured thousands and killed at least 12 people, including two children. sources tell abc that israeli agents planted explosives in the pagers in an operation against hezbollah. the white house denies being involved in either event, and israel has not commented. >> new at 11 a former employee of williams-sonoma is accused of defrauding the company out of $11 million, while the company is based in san francisco. this worker we're talking about was in georgia. an indictment claims he used the money on all sorts of things, including a house, a yacht, cars, sports tickets, and even a pet cloning service. the indictment claims he registered an llc business and approved

hundreds of invoices to business in his role as a warehouse general operations manager for work that was not actually provided a shocker at bay area genetics firm 23 and me. >> all seven members of the board resigned this week over plans by the ceo to take the company private. the board members are upset that the buyout offer by the ceo was so low. it's just the latest struggle for the sunnyvale company. 23 andme was valued at $3.1 billion when it went public in 2021, but it never turned a profit. its stock price went from $10 a share to just $0.35 on friday. 23 andme agreed to pay $30 million to customers after a data breach. >> it's my honor to present you with a colin powell medal of courage. >> what a moment. a really proud moment tonight for a young alameda girl at the dreamforce concert benefiting ucsf benioff

children's hospitals, an award presented by matthew mcconaughey. every year, the hospital awards the special medal to a patient who has demonstrated outstanding courage, empathy and leadership during their treatment process. as you're about to see, 12 year old alaina sweet is more than deserving. it's a moment two years in the making. 12 year old alaina sweet was honored wednesday night with the 2024 colin powell medal of courage. >> your actions represent the spirit of courage and compassion that we are in the heart of this award. >> the journey to get here started in 2022. alaina was a fifth grader, an avid reader with a passion for performing. it was during a theater class when alana's dad first noticed she had a limp, but it was more than growing pains. weeks of worsening pain led alana's parents to seek answers at ucsf, benioff children's hospital, oakland, and what they got was a heart stopping diagnosis. ewing sarcoma, a rare form of

pediatric bone cancer in her thigh bone. i had to grow up fast. >> i was only 11, and they were telling me that you know, my body is trying to kill me. >> over ten months, alaina received 14 cycles of chemotherapy, spent 115 nights in the hospital, and underwent multiple surgeries, including a 15 hour procedure to save her right leg. >> we couldn't be prouder. we're obviously, you know, amazed with just how she's showing up, how she's giving back to the community. >> for the past year and a half, alaina has served as a patient ambassador. >> she had a life threatening cancer, and she took that experience and was able to turn it to something positive. >> we are happy to say alaina is now in remission and the courage award. a fitting triumph this september during childhood cancer awareness month. i feel so happy and like, amazing and just so honored that they would pick me. she is great. that is

incredible. so deserving of that award. >> what a sweetheart. >> all right, well, coming up, a california family is trying to solve a mystery here. after their cat rainbow got away on a camping trip. >> his family nearly gave up hope on finding him. but he turned up months later, hundreds of miles away. this is really a weird story. >> the couple spent days searching yellowstone national park, but then had to head home to salinas without their cat. well, then, after 60 days, a woman in roseville found rainbow and his microchip was scanned at the local spca. >> he was really depleted. he probably didn't have a lot of energy to maybe even go further. so this lady who found him and rescued him, she's just an angel because. and she even said that he he looked like he was not going to make it much longer. >> wow. no one knows how the cat made it more than 800 miles. they hope his story could spark someone's memory of him somewhere to help piece together exactly what happened. >> good news though. he's back. yeah. that's great. wow, what a strange story. all right, let's

be getting some rain as well. certainly higher humidity helps with the firefighting efforts there. and up in the northern portion of the state, we did see the snow in the sierra around yosemite national park. winter weather advisory remains in effect above 9000ft, as they are expecting a few more inches of snow going into tomorrow. so thursday in tahoe showers a slight chance of thunder tomorrow once again. sun shining friday saturday, sunday. if you're heading up to the mountains, it's going to be beautiful weather, upper 60s to low 70s. if you want to get that one last summer trip in a live view from our sutro tower camera and the fog is right over san francisco. in typical summer fashion, as we look at live doppler seven, some high clouds moving through. temperatures at this hour in the 50s and the 60s. santa cruz cameras showing you gray skies overnight tonight. fog and areas of drizzle the next few days we're looking at milder afternoons and fall starts this upcoming weekend, and it's going to feel like summer. the sizzle is going to return. let's look at your temperatures first thing tomorrow morning. with the fog

around 50s and 60s, you will notice there will be a little bit of mist and drizzle right near the coastline at around 7.15, and then higher clouds will stream in, but a lot of sun away from the coast where the fog will be sitting most of the day. by the afternoon we'll see those temperatures come up into the 80s inland 60s coast. today we were only in the 60s and 70s well below average for this time of year. and first thing in the morning, 50s and 60s. watch out. give yourself a little extra time to commute or get to where you need to go because of the fog. visibility will be low, low 60s to low 80s. tomorrow afternoon should be a nice looking day. friday is a little bit warmer mid 80s inland. look at saturday, our final day of summer. we've got 90s showing up and for the start of fall it's going to get hot. inland areas in the mid 90s. 60s 70s coast side. here's your accuweather seven day forecast. fog in the morning. milder afternoon thursday friday is going to be milder as well and we bring in the summer warmth just in time for the seasons to change and the heat arrives. we're going to
