always live. abc seven news starts right now. this. >> they know that we're out here watching them. they won't come. they know that they will get in trouble. they will not do it. >> fighting crime with cameras today. dozens of small businesses in one south bay neighborhood received a new security camera system. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> it's the cost of more than $50,000 that will help this business community. and they say it is worth it. >> abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on this new safety effort, and how police will be involved. >> the alum rock village neighborhood in east san jose is filled with dozens of small businesses that have a big reach, get handmade mexican goods, vietnamese goods, especially the artisanal foods

that are offered to the greater san jose and really, santa clara county community. but the businesses have faced challenges. we have had a string of armed robberies here in the last couple of years. the businesses have banded together to form the alum rock village business association. now they're getting support from the city. $50,000 have been set aside for a pilot program. it gives 35 small businesses for security cameras, each with installation included. >> a lot of these businesses are family owned, and they're small, so they don't have the even if they have the money to buy the cameras, they might not have the expertise to set it up. >> san jose police say they'll be working with the businesses to identify the best spaces to place the cameras primary focus is still patrolling the area, getting officers to exit their vehicles to go out and actually meet and greet the business owners. >> that's something that we really want to emphasize, and this is just another conduit to that communication. >> the cameras would be registered with the police department. so if a crime occurs, police know a business has cameras and can ask for

video. the businesses also have an option to let police monitor the cameras 24 over seven. >> and that camera and saying that we're watching you, it's just a deterrent, especially for people who decide to, shoplift or who just want to throw trash here and there. >> so for now, this pilot program is focused on this neighborhood specifically, but the goal is to bring it to other neighborhoods in the city that are facing high crime. we want to rest assured the entire community that east side is a safe community to come to. you should shop here. you should eat here because the city of san jose is standing up for our small businesses. businesses without cameras will receive the new ones first. those with existing cameras will still get help from sj pd and making sure they have the best camera placement in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> oakland leaders gave an update today on the ongoing effort to install automated license plate readers around the city. oakland's police chief says 124 plate readers have been installed so far. another 26

will go up by the end of this week. oakland has been allocated 290 cameras, and the goal is to have them all installed by early november. a police lieutenant shared a story about how the plate readers were used recently to help solve a crime. >> we gathered video surveillance and overlaid them with alpr and identified a suspect vehicle. the vehicle was stopped two days later and a suspect was arrested, who ultimately confessed to the shooting. >> the chp is also installing license plate readers on freeway ramps throughout oakland for privacy reasons. data is deleted after 30 days if it is not being used to prosecute a crime. >> university of california regents have approved a request for campus police to receive new weapons. the vote took place at a meeting earlier this afternoon. police asked for more drones. robots pepper balls and other equipment. this comes after violent clashes on campus last year over the israel-hamas war. in the public comment portion of today's meeting, many students said that they were

against investing more money in weapons. >> it is extremely troubling to me that instead of ensuring that students feel safe on campus and have their rights of free speech protected, the uc regents are focused on funding military grade equipment that will continue to be used to surveil and repress students. >> uc officials insist police are not requesting anything that is military grade, and the goal is to improve public safety. >> voters in california are overwhelmingly in support of proposition 36. that's according to a statewide survey from the public policy institute. prop 36 is aimed at rolling back criminal justice reforms from the past decade and implementing harsher penalties for theft and drug crimes. according to the poll, 71% of likely voters support the ballot initiative, 26% oppose it. those are the statewide numbers in the bay area, 64% of voters polled are in favor of prop 36, while 32% are against it. on our 4 p.m. newscast, abc seven news insider phil matier said crime and public safety are on the top of

voters minds, and the poll is a reflection of that. >> a lot of people say if you were sitting in indiana, you might go, oh, it's a minor correction or we're trying to just fix it or so. so it's not completely off the rails, but here it becomes a do or die situation when you incorporate social justice. and gavin newsom saying it's a return to the war on drugs because we're going to be charging people for fentanyl and drug crimes, other people go, no, it's just a sign of the times. >> supporters say prop 36 would take current retail theft laws a step further by upgrading misdemeanor thefts of items worth less than $950 to felonies, among other changes. opponents are worried it will return california to a time of mass incarceration. >> three alameda police officers facing manslaughter charges are expected in court tomorrow. the officers are charged in the death of 26 year old mario gonzalez. attorneys for the officers are expected to ask for charges in the case to be dismissed. gonzalez died while being taken into custody in april of 2021. he lost

consciousness while officers had had him pinned on the ground. reviews by the previous da. the sheriff's office and the city of alameda all found the officers were not criminally liable, but the alameda county coroner's office later ruled that the death was a homicide caused in part by the stress of the altercation. >> now to the latest from seven on your side investigates an antitrust lawsuit against luxury design designer hermes. didn't get very far in court today. you may remember back in april, we first told you about a proposed class action lawsuit that was filed in northern california. and today, abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow was in court following the latest developments inside u.s. district court in the northern district of california. >> judge james donato said he read a proposed class action antitrust lawsuit against luxury retailer hermes with interest, but that he was really struggling with why it was an antitrust injury. the lawsuit alleges hermes was tying the purchase of its popular birkin bags to the purchase of other

ancillary products, like belts or scarves, saying that only once a consumer has a sufficient purchase history will they be offered the opportunity to purchase a birkin. judge donato saying these are luxury goods. there are people who want birkins. this is a highly consumer choice driven market, and telling the plaintiff's attorneys, you're going to have to spell out how competition is being affected adversely. he went on to say, no client says, i had an hermes belt shoved down my throat, but i really wanted a prada belt. judge donato saying hermes can run its business any way it wants, including producing five birkins a year and charging millions of dollars for them. he even went as far as to suggest the business model was pro-competition, because anyone who didn't want to play along could purchase luxury bags elsewhere. the plaintiff's attorneys asked to amend their lawsuit and return in three weeks. they had no comment for abc seven news, and neither did hermes attorneys or brand employees present in court as well. in san francisco for the i-team, melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> and if you have an issue you'd like seven on your side. to investigate, go to abc seven

news.com/7 on your side. that's also where you'll find this story. >> new covid boosters are available, but they do come at a cost. instead of being free like in years past, they now may come with a price tag if you're uninsured or underinsured. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains how a program can help those in need get the vaccine now available at a pharmacy near you. >> the updated covid boosters for 2024. the updated shot targets the flirt subvariants that caused havoc across the united states over the summer. santa clara county health officer doctor sarah cody says there may be vaccine fatigue, but staying protected is still important. >> covid continues to circulate, will likely pick up this winter and may be circulating for years. and so this is a new part of life where you need to get your covid booster when it comes available. >> santa clara county is recommending anyone over the age of six months old to get the shot when they can. if you're coming off of a recent infection. doctor cody says you should wait three months until getting the vaccine. this

despite santa clara county wastewater data showing some of the lowest transmission rates of 2024. >> but we anticipate that they will rise this fall as they have every fall since the beginning of the pandemic. and that's why we recommend that people get vaccinated. the problem for thousands in the south bay and bay area wide, getting the vaccine may not be as easy as before. >> the federal government has sunsetted the free covid vaccine program, instead leaving the bill to insurance companies. if you are uninsured or underinsured, that could mean a booster that costs hundreds of dollars. santa clara county public health has solutions. >> whether you're uninsured or facing high out-of-pocket costs with insurance. our health care access program hap may help you get the care you need. >> you can find the information at health.gov.org. when you click on the help paying your bill tab, the program offers residents free or discounted medical services or supplies like vaccines to those who qualify. the county can also help residents figure out eligibility for other medical coverages like the newly expanded medi-cal program. the

including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders. it will deploy a fleet of five human driven cars in mountain view and sunnyvale. this fall. they'll be used for mapping and will not carry passengers. crews also hopes to reintroduce five driverless cars on bay area roads sometime after that. this comes a year after crews operations were suspended in the bay area. last october, a san francisco pedestrian was hit by a car and knocked into the path and then dragged by a self-driving car. >> all right. do you have an iphone? if you do. you can now add your driver's license to apple wallet. the pilot program,

which began today, allows people to show their digital id at tsa security checkpoints at sfo and in l.a. at lax, google started a similar program last month. people can also use their apple watch. officials say apple and the dmv will not know when or where you use your id. >> apple is the latest participant in the california mdl journey. uh- we've joined their wallet as of today and their following google. and of course we've had a mobile dl in the dmv wallet for about a year now, so over 650,000 people are participating in the program today. we expect maybe with this announcement, that number is going to go up a little bit, given the given the demand for apple products, because as we know, again, it's a pilot program. >> they're testing it and it's limited to 1.5 million participants. people with mobile driver's licenses will still need a physical license while driving. >> coming up, it's called a portrait of a phenomenal woman. and who better than the bay area's own maya angelou? the sculpture unveiled today and

a very special day. today. san francisco made history by unveiling a monument to doctor maya angelou. while there is major concern over the lack of female representation in monuments across the country, san francisco is taking a step

forward. unveiling the first monument commemorating a black woman in san francisco's civic art collection. city leaders and representatives were there to celebrate the monument, which is titled portrait of a phenomenal woman by artist laura thomas. it honors the award winning poet, writer and civil rights leader who grew up in oakland from age 14 and while in the bay area. angelou broke color and gender barriers. city librarian michael lambert shared what he hopes young people take away from seeing it here. >> i want them to be inspired. doctor maya angelou has contributed so much to our country's literary and cultural history, and what better place for this monument to honor doctor maya angelou than here at the front door of the people's university, the most democratic of institutions? >> if you'd like to see it in person, the bronze sculpture will be a permanent fixture to welcome people to the san francisco public library. that's

skystar wheel. the view is incredible, but it is socked in. mount tam showing you the marine layer and emeryville showing you some peeks of blue over 80. so we will see some more sun in the coming days. homewood is showing some cloud cover developing vertically. let's talk about your temperature trend. livermore is average high for tomorrow is 85 degrees. it's going to be close to average, but not for long. you notice well above average, especially as we head towards sunday, which is the start of fall into early next week. and that trend is going to continue well into that ten day period. so let's take a look at that live picture from homewood, where you can certainly see that they do haveo develop in the sierra. they're seeing the thunderstorms also down towards southern california. there were some thunderstorms in the southern part of monterey county earlier today, and that's because that low is still spinning off the coastline. it has kept our temperatures below average once again, but high pressure is coming in and it's going to take control. and as it does, those temperatures are going to go up.

and you're really going to notice it this weekend. right now the fog is hanging around near the coast. it's already pushed in over the bay. temperatures are in the 60s to 80s today. so 80s are finally showing up overnight. marine layer expands this weekend. sunny summerlike warmth coming your way. and autumn arrives on sunday and it's going to be heating up inland sunday through tuesday. here's a look at your evening forecast 6:00. inland areas still sunny in the 70s dropping off into the 60s. later tonight around the bay. partly cloudy, mid 60s and then eventually into the upper 50s. you definitely need that extra layer along the coastline. mostly cloudy fog, seconds coming down into the mid 50s and speaking of coming down tomorrow morning we start the day with 50s 60s. fog will be most prevalent along the coast and around parts of the bay. there might be a little bit of mist and drizzle as well. the warming trend for the south bay will continue. 80 in san jose, 83 morgan hill on the peninsula, 74. palo alto. low 60s coast side. some fog is going to hang around downtown san francisco,

million contract with the team. >> nba hall of famer gary payton was introduced today as the new men's basketball coach at the college of alameda. the 56 year old oakland native inherits a junior college program that went seven and 21 last season. payton says he learned to work hard after struggling his first two years in the nba, a work ethic he plans to pass on to his players. >> then i went back to my roots in oakland and i started working out, and i started to be gary payton again, and that's when my whole life i had a lot of confidence. like, i have a lot of confidence in coaching this basketball team. now you're right. i did have ability before a lot of people, and i use it the right way. and i'm continuing to use it now. >> the nine time all star son, gary payton, the second plays for the golden state w
