right now in orange and riverside counties. video shows the backup on the 241 freeway as first responders work to clear the scene. >> and of the eight injured, one firefighter had to be airlifted. five others were seriously hurt and two have more minor injuries. >> i've been a fire chief for ten years and, these are the toughest things to have to have to deal with, and it breaks my heart. >> chp, of course, is investigating. it's not clear yet what caused the crash, but they have said no other vehicles were involved. the fire truck is equipped with seat belts. >> good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we turn now to justice for the family of a san francisco photographer years after his murder. >> everything. my life to me to get justice for him. >> seven years of waiting is finally over for the family of ed french. his killing shocked the city, especially after the revelation that one of the suspects had been released from

police custody just days before the 2017 shooting at twin peaks. >> a trial last year ended in robbery convictions for both suspects, but they were just retried for the photographer's murder. this year and found guilty today. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone has the emotional reaction from the victim's sister. >> pretty emotional for me. we've been fighting seven years and. finally never take this long. >> laurie french, reacting to the guilty verdict that came down from a jury on thursday. and her brother ed's killing way back in 2017. >> it's on film. there was no question that they murdered him. for it to take seven years of my life and all his friends and family's lives to finally get justice. i don't know, something's wrong with the system.

>> 71 year old ed french was killed as he took pictures of the then under construction salesforce tower on that sunday morning at twin peaks. thursday, a san francisco jury found fantasy d cure and lamont mims guilty. a statement s.f. district attorney brooke jenkins says the jury's verdict holds. mr. cure and mr. mims accountable for the cold blooded murder of an elder in our community, doing what he loved to do the morning he was killed in 2017, laurie says the surveillance video of that crime was shown in court and is still painful to watch. >> and she pulls out the gun and she shoots him. she shoots him straight in the heart and they start to run. and then mims turns around, comes back, and grabs the camera bag off. a dying man, and then, before he leaves, he kicks him. >> the jury read the verdict. laurie says she was in tears.

while the two have been in jail for some time, she says she wants them in prison for what they did. we asked her about their sentencing in december. they will you be here for that too? >> right i will for sure. he's looking at me saying, sis, why did you waste your time? i'm not coming back. that's what he's saying to me. okay. and i know that. but you know what? i had to. i had to find justice for him. it meant everything in my life. i'm 84. it meant everything in my life to me to get justice for him. and finally, now i can die in peace. j.r. >> stone abc seven news. >> new. tonight at 11, the san francisco symphony canceled its season opener tonight just two hours before the show. that's because union members of the chorus have gone on strike. >> s.f. symphony for no good day. your city, your life. you

should. >> chorus members formed a picket line outside davies symphony hall. their union, the american guild of musical artists, has been negotiating for higher pay and equitable cuts since the last contract expired in july. symphony leadership spoke to abc seven this month. they say they're looking forward to continuing negotiations. >> if we lose the high quality of the musicians, we lose the high quality of the art. and so we have to ask ourselves what is important to us. and i think that any civilization has to answer that question, that beauty is incredibly important. >> we are committed to working with our musicians and i trust them. i really do. >> sf symphony representatives say the canceled concerts tonight, tomorrow and saturday will not be rescheduled. ticket holders can exchange their tickets for another performance or get a full refund. >> it's one of our biggest challenges in building a better bay area. how we handle homelessness is changing dramatically. case in point fremont is the latest city to

consider new restrictions on camping. city staff presented a plan this week to ban camping on public property and parking rvs in residential areas. it would also require people to move their cars after 72 hours. the city council is expected to vote on the rules next month. cities across the bay area are shifting homelessness strategies after this summer's supreme court decision, giving them more leeway for sweeps. and san francisco was one of the first to scale up sweeps after that decision. mayor london breed is now announcing a plan to increase shelter beds in the city. she says san francisco is on track to reach its shelter goal three years early. in july 2023, san francisco launched the home by the bay plan. that's a five year effort to cut unsheltered homelessness in half by 2028. in the first year, the city has provided shelter to nearly 10,000 people and has moved more than 5000 people into permanent housing. so mayor

breed is now doubling the plan's goals for shelter and temporary housing. >> we continue to follow the effort to keep a chinese language immersion preschool open in marin county. tonight, the legal battle with mill valley school district is escalating. tara marin preschool has filed a claim against the district to try to recover $2.5 million in expenses, claiming breach of contract. the school was served with an eviction notice by the district. recently, the school's director told abc seven news tara has ten years left on its lease, but the district is breaking the lease early because it needs the space for administrative offices. nearly a year after a grisly incident that forced cruise self-driving cars off of our roads, the company is ready to come back. cruise says it will start sending out mapping cars in sunnyvale and mountain view to get ready for a driverless test. this fall. the company says it will send out no more than five robo taxis for testing. cruise is still banned from taking paid passengers after a robotaxi dragged a pedestrian who was hit by

another car last october. >> all right, let's turn now to your forecast and the warm up about to arrive. looking live out at san francisco on a fairly gloomy night. but things are changing. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya. >> yeah, dan. and just in time for the weekend, we're going to brighten things up and warm it up as we take a look at a live picture from our exploratorium camera. you can see san francisco is sitting under a layer of fog, and the visibility is low, down to just over a mile and half moon bay, so something you'll need to watch out for some dense fog in the morning. temperatures in the 50s at noontime, mainly sunny, and we are looking at a warmer afternoon. low 60s to upper 80s. still pretty mild away from the coastline around 7 p.m. the changes that are coming for the weekend are not just a change in seasons. i'll be back with the hotter forecast coming up. dan. okay sandhya, thanks a lot. >> tonight we have three building a better bay area breakthroughs to share in our mission to build a better bay

area. first to the south bay where police are trying to build trust with neighbors. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains how captain torres police report to the dance floor. >> some officers with the san jose police department are showing a lighter side in uniform dance battle. on thursday, the department hosted what they're calling a trust fair. several community agencies tables outside the seven trees community center. >> we have a few officers. >> our crime prevention unit, captain brian spears, said it's about building meaningful connections with residents in underserved areas. >> having the children accept you, the parents accept you and want to communicate, it's priceless. the more personal not only myself but the officers, the members of the department, the more personal they can have a conversation. there's more buy in on both sides. >> parents who live in the neighborhood came for different resources. >> i'm interested in the school for my kids, and i'm trying to

>> that looked like fun. our next break through the 2024 dreamforce event is in the books. the biggest ai conference in the world brought more than 40,000 people to downtown san francisco. dreamforce is expected to add a $90 million boost to the local economy. many of the hotels near moscone center were sold out, with rooms going for more than double the normal rate. restaurants are also reporting an influx in reservations and walk ins. >> not only do they spend their money in the hotels, but they spend even more money outside of the hotels and they pay for taxes. >> all the homeless, everything that's been affecting the business right now with the conference look more clean. so it's been busy. >> mayor london breed says the influx of crowds won't end with this year's dreamforce. other large events, including the nba all-star game and fifa world cup, are coming to san francisco in the near future. >> and our final break through the oakland city council declared october 1st peerless coffee day in oakland. that marks the 100th anniversary of the family owned cafe.

>> prop 36 is a is a real setback, and it appears, appears clearly that the public has a different point of view. >> supporters of prop 36 say it would take current retail theft laws a step further. one change would be upgrading misdemeanor thefts of items worth less than $950 to felonies. abc seven news insider phil matier says crime and public safety are on the top of voters minds, and the poll is a reflection of that. >> they're worried about it. they're fed up with it. they are tired of seeing, you know, the massive shoplifting, the theft. but you know what's really amazing about this, this poll, i haven't seen an initiative like this with numbers like this in a long time. >> opponents of prop 36 are worried it will return california to a time of mass incarceration. and we are now just 47 days out to election day. ballots go into the mail october 7th. all active registered voters will get one. the u.s. postal service is promising, quote, extraordinary measures to make sure ballots arrive on time in the south bay.

>> a new tool to help fight crime and empowers small business owners in a popular business district. the camera safety program was unveiled today in san jose's alum rock village. business owners can receive the surveillance cameras at no cost and register them with the police department. >> the cameras will definitely help us watch out for one another and get the help that we deserve, because a lot of the businesses here are, second language and their culture. they don't like to report. >> right now, the camera safety program is limited to the alum rock village area, but the goal is to expand it throughout san jose and in oakland. they are working to install automated license plate readers across the city. oakland's police chief says 124 plate readers have been installed so far. another 26 will go up by the end of this week. oakland has been allocated

290 of these cameras, and the goal is to have them all installed by early november. the chp is also installing license plate readers on freeway ramps throughout oakland for privacy reasons. data is deleted after 30 days if it's not being used to prosecute a crime. >> a new city report shows just how much money oakland made in the first year. having parking meters around lake merritt from july of 2023 through the end of june of this year, the city brought in nearly $900,000. the meters replaced free time, limited parking spaces around the lake. the decision was controversial at the time. opponents said parking fees and fines can be cost prohibitive for some, meaning the park would not be accessible for all. >> cisco is laying off 842 employees in the bay area. that's according to records filed with the state. last month, we reported that the tech company was cutting 7% of its workforce around the world. that's about 6000 jobs. we now know that 134 san francisco workers and 708 santa clara

county workers are included in those layoffs. the layoffs are expected to take effect on november 15th. cisco also laid off more than 4200 people earlier this year. >> okay, let's get a check on our weather because it's about to get a little toasty around here. >> it is big time, actually. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast. yeah. >> we're going to get into the upper 90s and low 100 seconds in the accuweather seven day forecast, but not immediately. i do want to show you the temperatures for tomorrow versus sunday. yeah, the seasons are changing. we're going to go from summer to fall by sunday. and tomorrow's high temperatures still in the comfort zone, even though it's warmer mid 80s santa rosa livermore, you will notice santa rosa going up six degrees by sunday into 90 degree temperature range, livermore going up to 93, which is nine degrees warmer, san jose from 80 tomorrow to 88. and you will notice gilroy going up 13 degrees, san francisco and oakland 7 to 8 degrees. here's

the reason why the low that brought the thunderstorms to southern monterey county, the sierra southern california is moving on out. high pressure is starting to move in. and as it does, we're going to notice that the temperatures continue to go up by monday, which is going to be our hottest on the accuweather seven day forecast inland areas will be looking at moderate to major heat risk and even parts of the bay will be in the moderate heat risk. so if you are sensitive, just keep that in mind. i want to step aside to show you the live views from our tower cameras. absolutely beautiful views. but we do have fog around and that's something you'll need to watch out for tomorrow morning. it has pushed across the peninsula into the east bay, even parts of the north bay. visibility just over a mile and a half moon bay. at last. check. so it is going to be thick around some areas to start the morning 50s, 60s on those temperatures. now from our emeryville camera, you can see some of that fog layer overnight. fog dense in patches this weekend. we're looking at sunny and summerlike warmth. and then autumn arrives on sunday

and it's going to be heating up inland sunday through tuesday. speaking of heating up, tomorrow morning starts out comfortable. comfortable with fog, a little bit of mist, 50s and 60s. as the day goes on, the warmth starts to build. by noontime you're looking at 70. still some patchy fog along the coast. and then in the afternoon we'll go up into the 80s in our inland valleys. so pretty nice looking. end to the workweek. your morning will begin with that fog. definitely look out for it. warming trend for the afternoon. south bay temperatures 80 degrees in san jose 83 morgan hill. still manageable on the peninsula 73 in mountain view, 62. in half moon bay, san francisco 67 degrees. these temperatures coming up closer to average 84, in santa rosa and the north bay, 81 in san rafael. heading into the east bay. low 70s berkeley, oakland, fremont, 75 inland, 85 in concord, 84, in livermore, 88, in brentwood. accuweather seven day forecast. we're going to go with even warmer weather for the weekend. 90 showing up in our inland valleys. autumn
