get you going on this friday. temperatures right now. starting out in the mid 50s to the low 60s, will warm nicely as we head deeper into the day. so here's a look at the inland forecast. we have sunshine today. a little bit warmer than yesterday. temperatures mid upper 80s later on this afternoon. pretty close to average for this time of the year. clouds right now around the bay shoreline. sunshine peeking out later this morning, then the afternoon. it is bright. we'll have those daytime highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s along the coast today. it's very cloudy right now. we have some mist and drizzle. get some afternoon sunshine peeking through some of those clouds today and highs in the low 60s. we'll preview that beautiful weekend forecast in seven minutes. let's check in with frances. see those drive times? >> hi, drew. well, we have a trouble spot in the north bay. this is in novato because of a alameda del prado. the right lane is blocked. no estimated time of reopening, and it looks like we're starting to see some slowing approaching the scene. we'll let you know when we find out if it's going to be cleared. here's a live shot in san jose. this is highway 87 north, bound for taillights there. and just a

heads up. a new problem reported in the south bay north 101 at 880, blocking the right lane. so we'll keep you posted on that as well. some slow drive times for you. westbound 580 tracy to dublin, 43 minutes. but that's not bad for a friday. looking good. southbound 680 dublin to mission boulevard, but heads up. southbound 680 will be closed this weekend starting tonight, right at 580. so think of detours for the weekend. live shot the golden gate bridge shows traffic flowing well right now into san francisco. >> stephanie francis, thank you. years after a bay area photographer was murdered, his family is finally getting justice. yesterday, a jury found two people guilty of killing 71 year old ed french back in 2017. french was taking photos of salesforce tower from twin peaks when he was shot. a trial last year found fantasy to cure and lamont mims guilty of robbery. they were retried this year for french's murder. abc seven spoke to his sister after the verdict. >> he's looking at me saying,

sis, why did you waste your time? i'm not coming back. that's what he's saying to me. okay. and i know that. but you know what? i had to. i had to find justice for him. it meant everything in my life. i'm 84. it meant everything in my life to me to get justice for him. and finally, now i can die in peace. >> to cure and mims have already been in jail for some time. french's family says they want the pair in prison. sentencing is set for december. >> the university of california regents have approved the request for a new weapons for campus police. it comes after several other campuses across the uc system did earlier this year, including uc berkeley and ucsf. police asked for more drones, robots, pepper balls and other equipment in the public comment portion of yesterday's meeting, many students said they're against investing more money in weapons. how dare you

propose approval of ab 481 to allow police to buy more military grade weapons? >> that will only further hurt pro-palestine protesters? right to freedom of speech, health and wellness. >> uc officials said police are not requesting anything that is military grade, and the goal is to improve public safety. >> in san francisco, mayor london breed says the city is on track to reach its shelter. goal three years early. in july 2023, san francisco launched the home by the bay plan, a five year plan to cut unsheltered homelessness in half by 2028. in just one year, the city has provided shelter to nearly 10,000 people and has moved more than 5000 people into permanent housing. now mayor breed wants to double the plan's goals for shelter and temporary housing. >> governor newsom is making homelessness and the housing crisis a priority. during a visit to the bay area yesterday, he signed a package of more than 30 bills intended to not only help the unhoused but also build more housing for everyone. the new laws will streamline the

approval process for certain projects to boost home building, and places that don't abide by state requirements to accommodate the new housing will face penalties. >> we continue to struggle with accountability. we continue to struggle with transparency. but for those that turn their back on this crisis, we're turning up the heat. >> the laws also require cities and counties to create plans to house the homeless and those at risk. the governor also introduced the home key plus housing program, which will help veterans and people experiencing mental health or substance use disorders. >> if you're looking for something to do this weekend, you have options. free concerts and events are coming here to san francisco starting tonight. organizers are hoping they will bring lots of people and money into the city. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live with a preview. gloria what's on the list? >> yeah, there are two different events that are going on in san francisco today. we're talking about oktoberfest, which will

make history. it's not far from where we are here at the kgo studios on front street. there's also going to be a mega concert. listen to this huge news uh- first time that they are letting us make this the entertainment zone. >> our party has usually been 3 to 8, and now we can blow it up and go 2 to 10, which is a bigger party. we get to add another band to the equation and we're super excited about that >> grammy award winning band portugal. the man will take the stage with american soul and funk group snack time tonight at 7 p.m. it's at san francisco's civic center plaza. this is a free music event by another planet entertainment, and if you're planning to go, you are asked to rsvp online through their website and in a different celebration. the state's first entertainment zone event with oktoberfest on front that will be on front street between california and sacramento. three bars will sell alcoholic

beverages to go. there will be live music, and it's all part of the entertainment zone program, which allows outdoor drinking and is intended to help revitalize downtown. and san francisco is authorized to create these zones under sb 76. that's a bill authored by senator scott wiener. so if you're planning on going to oktoberfest, it's going on from 2 to 10 p.m. and you can rsvp online. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria. dreamforce is over and the attendees and business owners reviews are in. this year, attendees noticed some positive changes in security around the conference. mayor london breed, in preparation for the event, brought in extra california highway patrol officers. she says they made a difference. >> i've been out in the middle of the night checking out things, and i see people out at different restaurants. city just feels so good and it looks so good and our officers are out there. our ambassadors. >> the near 40,000 attendees helped pump an estimated $90 million into the san francisco

orange county firefighters were hurt after a rollover crash in irvine late last night. the initial call reported several people hurt. >> we've got one overturned crew buggy, multiple patients, possibly a total of ten patients were triaging. now we'll let you know. >> the fire chief says the crew had just finished up a 12 hour shift on the airport fire. that's the wildfire burning in orange and riverside counties. video shows the backup on 241 as

first responders work to clear the scene. of the eight injured, one firefighter had to be airlifted. five others were seriously hurt and two have minor injuries. >> i've been a fire chief for ten years and, these are the toughest things to have to have to deal with, and it breaks my heart. >> the chp says it appears a ladder in the lanes is to blame. a vehicle ahead of the fire truck swerved to avoid the ladder and this fire truck also swerved, hitting the guardrail. and that's when it flipped over. health officials in los angeles are monitoring three cases of dengue fever. the viral infection is spread by mosquitoes. symptoms are similar to the flu. it can include fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain. health officials say the la county patients did not travel to areas where dengue fever is common, and in fact they contracted this locally. experts say that probably means someone who had dengue fever abroad went to

southern california, then got bitten by a mosquito there. >> this now infected mosquito can then bite an individual that has not traveled, resulting in a locally acquired case. >> wearing mosquito repellent, long sleeves and avoiding standing water can prevent mosquito bites and lower your risk of infection. this year in the u.s, there are more than 3000 cases of dengue fever. that's about twice as many cases as last year. mass will soon become mandatory at some places in santa cruz county, starting in november, all visitors to acute care facilities in the county will be required to mask up due to the expected respiratory virus season. those locations include care and nursing facilities, surgical and maternity centers, and dialysis and chemotherapy centers. >> one of the bay area's wealthiest communities may soon try to ban something that's boomed in popularity around the county and the country. pickleball. we're talking about this is going on in the town of

ross in marin county. the town is considering banning or regulating pickleball courts at private homes, according to the chronicle. neighbors are reportedly concerned about the noise, saying the sport is much louder than tennis or basketball. the town council will take up the issue at a meeting next month. in the meantime, the staff wants to gather more information before making a specific proposal. >> some costco shoppers in the east bay got a big surprise earlier this week. look at this. yes, that is former first lady michelle obama. she was promoting her new brand of drink called please.e. at the costco in livermore. the brand is touted as a healthier option to normal drinks and snacks, with less sugar than regular carbonated drinks. it's geared toward younger kids. secret service agents you can see them there surrounded mrs. obama. as she said, it's healthy and has less calories. steph and ayesha curry are also investors in please.e. how did we not know about this? i don't know. >> i know, i know. >> how are all these people quiet about michelle obama?

going to get me today. >> the chicken bake. >> you won't find nirvana at your temple all the time. you really won't. >> man. this morning. let's take you to our exploratorium camera. it is cloudy out there right now, but we'll get some sunshine this afternoon. that sunshine appears between about 10 a.m. and 1 p.m, so a warming trend continues as we head into the weekend. now, fall begins here on sunday, and those temperatures will feel a lot more like summer over the weekend. and then early next week we have some hot days coming our way. in fact, by monday we have a moderate to major heat risk away from the coast. so looking at the next ten days, we'll take walnut creek for example. for much of this week, temperatures have been below average. but heading into the weekend, we find that warmer weather arriving and then those temperatures really spike early next week, monday and tuesday. those are our two hottest days on the seven day forecast. but really, for the foreseeable future, we will keep those temperatures warmer than average starting this weekend. so our inland forecast today expect a lot of sunshine temperatures in the mid 80s

around the bay. shoreline clouds, the sun, highs in the low and mid 70s along the coast. we'll have those temperatures in the low 60s. so today those temperatures back to reality back to average. this is where we should be for this time of the year. it will feel nice this afternoon. just a light wind out there to finish the day overnight tonight partly to mostly cloudy overnight. lows dipping into the 50s. let's talk about the weekend. lots of sunshine on saturday, temperatures warming even more then today. then as fall begins on sunday morning, those temperatures are warm to hot mid 90s and our hottest areas inland. and then look at monday afternoon. it's kind of a scorcher in terms of fall temperatures. that's why we have that moderate to major heat risk. this is your monday map. as you find the hottest day. those areas shaded in orange and some pockets of red in spots. just take it easy out there. spend a little bit of time since we've seen highs this warm, but then we start to cool off a bit as we head to the middle part of next week. so the accuweather seven day forecast shows you warmer today, sunnier and warmer over the weekend with fall beginning sunday morning. there's that hot day on monday

final home stand ever at the coliseum. the a's host the yankees tonight for the first of three games this weekend. they'll then play the rangers on tuesday through thursday, and thursday will be the last scheduled a's game at the coliseum, a place they've called home since 1968. the team is doing a stadium replica giveaway on thursday, but fans won't be able to get the item until the seventh inning. the a's will play in sacramento for the next three seasons, ahead of a planned move to las vegas. happening today, bart will begin installing the new fare gates at its antioch station. the agency says these gates will make it safer for commuters, as well as helping to cut down on fare evasion. they've already been installed at several stations in oakland and san francisco. agencies are meeting today in martinez to discuss the future of the antioch amtrak station. these agencies include transit authorities in alameda and contra costa counties, among others. a recent report cited

serious safety and security issues with that station. those agencies voted to close the station and replace it with another amtrak station. elsewhere in the region. the mayor has asked to keep the station open, but a permanent solution has not been reached yet. the latest covid vaccine is now available, but the federal government is no longer covering those shots, leaving the bill to insurance companies. that means if you don't have insurance, you'll have to pay out of pocket. santa clara county has a program that can help. the county wants to make sure cost is not a barrier for people to get vaccinated. >> whether you're uninsured or facing high out-of-pocket costs with insurance, our health care access program hap may help you get the care you need. >> you can find more information at health dot scc gov.org. when you click on the help paying your bill tab, you'll see that option there. the program offers free or discounted medical services and supplies to those who qualify. next, at 630, you

much of this week, we've been below average when it comes to our temperatures. daytime highs in the 80s in our warmer spots inland, we have those clouds giving way to sunshine. that sunshine breaks through between about 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. this afternoon. we'll see temperatures starting out in the mid 50s to the low 60s. good morning concord, you're at 57 degrees. so looking inland, first we have a sunny afternoon a little bit warmer than yesterday. those highs mid upper 80s for our afternoon around the bay shoreline we have clouds this morning. there's that sunshine breaking through later this afternoon. and then a bright mild day. temperatures are in the 70s around the bay shoreline along the coast. it is drizzle with mist, overcast skies. this morning. partly cloudy this afternoon. those highs in the low 60s. we'll show you the full weekend forecast in seven minutes. let's check in with frances senior drive times. >> all right, drew, we are seeing some slow drive times around the bay area. you can see some of the usual spots, but we're also tracking the drive time in the north bay on southbound 101 from santa rosa to san francisco. it is almost an hour, so it's a lot slower than normal. and that's because

of a tree down on southbound 101 at alameda del prado. and here is a live shot before that, where you can see very heavy traffic at ignacio boulevard. so traffic is jammed right now. southbound 101 through novato. because of that tree down. and a traffic alert has been issued for that plan on some extra time heading through the area. here's a look at the maps you can see it's slow from highway 37. in addition to that, there is a crash in san francisco, eastbound 80 after seventh street and traffic slows. getting into san francisco. if you're heading towards the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up past the 880 overcrossing and slow across the upper deck into the city. reggie. thanks, francis. >> new this morning. one person has been injured. several people detained after a shooting in brentwood. brentwood police officers and a swat team responded just after nine last night. this is at sparrow creek drive and bush creek drive just off of sand creek road. a neighbor says they heard multiple shots fired. the brentwood press reports the house tied to the shooting has a

restraining order against one of the tenants. police are asking anyone with information to call them. >> this morning, professors are accusing the university of california of violating their rights to free speech. their union just filed a complaint with the state labor board. it accuses uc officials of illegally threatening faculty with discipline if they include a discussion of pro-palestinian protests on campus in their classes. the union's attorney is asking the labor board to find that uc is in violation of state law, and its employees rights. they want to overturn any disciplinary action and reimburse any lost income. the university of california hasn't responded. it did, though, respond to a similar complaint filed earlier this year refuting any illegal actions. >> fremont is the latest city to consider new restrictions on camping and parking rvs. city staff presented a plan to ban camping on public property and parking rvs in residential areas. it would also require people to move their cars after

72 hours. the city council is expected to vote on the rules next month. cities across the bay area are shifting homelessness strategies after this summer's supreme court ruling, giving them more leeway for sweeps. your voice, your vote. 46 days to go until election day and both campaigns raising the stakes. oprah held a virtual event with vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump made a significant, significant pledge to jewish americans before then, saying that they would be at fault if he loses the election. here's abc's christiane cordero. >> kamala harris, 13 years after her daytime tv finale, oprah winfrey stepped back under studio lights in the detroit suburbs for a presidential candidate. she's endorsed. vice president kamala harris fielded questions from the live and virtual audiences of mainly supporters, including the mother of amber thurman, a georgia woman who died of abortion related complications after waiting 20 hours in a hospital for medical care just two weeks after georgia's strict abortion ban was enacted.

january 20th, 2025, he pledged to discredit universities that don't end anti-semitic propaganda before saying jewish voters would be to blame if he lost the election. i'm not going to call this as a prediction, but in my opinion, the jewish people would have a lot to do with a loss. >> trump also slammed iran at thursday's events after american intelligence agencies accused iran of hacking the trump campaign, sending stolen information to the biden campaign. the agencies say there's no information suggesting the recipients replied. iran tried hacking both campaigns, according to officials, but could only breach trump's christiane cordeiro, abc news washington. >> california's proposition 36 is gaining momentum as we get closer to election day. the measure is aimed at rolling back criminal justice reforms from the past decade and implementing harsher penalties for theft and drug crimes. a statewide survey from the public policy institute

comments he made on a site. in one post, mark robinson allegedly called himself a black nazi. he's also accused of saying he supported reinstating slavery. robinson has denied making the post. both he and the north carolina republican party say the accusations are a political smear. >> look, i'm not going to get into the minutia of how somebody manufactured this, all these salacious tabloid lies. but i can tell you this there's been over $1 million spent on me through i by a billionaire sun, who's bound and determined to destroy me. >> and as you just saw on the screen, he is the current lieutenant governor. his opponent, his democratic opponent, state attorney general josh stein, commented on the allegations, saying that robinson is unfit to be governor. and by the way, this is a close race. you could have your ballot soon. in california, secretary of state says county elections offices will begin mailing ballots october 7th, the last day to register to vote is october 21st. although you can

symphony hall. the union, the american guild of musical artists, has been negotiating for higher pay and equitable cuts since the last contract expired in july. the san francisco symphony canceled thursday, friday and saturday performances. the season opener last night was canceled just two hours before the show. symphony leadership spoke to abc seven news this month and says that they're continuing those negotiations. >> if we lose the high quality of the musicians, we lose the high quality of the art and so we have to ask ourselves what is important to us. and i think that any civilization has to answer that question, that beauty is incredibly important. >> we are committed to working with our musicians, and i trust them. i really do. >> with its financial belt tightening, the symphony is saying goodbye to its conductor, esa-pekka salonen. he announced in march that he was stepping down at the end of the season, and the symphony has not named a

replacement yet. now, no other concerts are being canceled at this time, according to the symphony. if you do have tickets for those canceled shows again, you can get a refund. you can also exchange them for a different show. you just have to go to their box office. you can also do that online at the symphony's website. live in san francisco gloria rodriguez abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. now it's time for our abc seven mornings advancer our way of highlighting some things that are happening in the bay area today. first, three alameda police officers are expected in court today facing manslaughter charges. >> the officers are charged in the death of 26 year old mario gonzalez. attorneys for the officers are expected to ask for charges in the case to be dismissed. gonzalez died while being taken into custody in april of 2021. he lost consciousness while officers had pinned him to the ground for several minutes. reviews by the previous da, the sheriff's office and the city of alameda all found the officers were not criminally liable. the alameda county coroner's office later ruled gonzalez's death a

homicide caused in part by the stress of this altercation. >> a traffic alert if you'll be in the east bay this weekend. part of i-680 will be closed for construction. it's the southbound stretch from acosta boulevard in san ramon to 580 in pleasanton. the closure starts at nine tonight. it goes until 4 a.m. monday. caltrans advising you to plan a different route to help reduce traffic in the area. the northbound side of 680 will be open all weekend. >> san francisco transit is turning back the page. muni heritage weekend kicks off tomorrow, celebrating the original vehicle fleet that started it at all. festivities will run from 10:00 to 4 p.m. tomorrow and sunday, and you can enjoy free entry to the san francisco railway museum across from the ferry building. and you can also ride on historic busses, cable cars and streetcars all weekend. some dating all the way back to the 1930s. >> still to come, layoffs at cisco. how many of the company's bay area workers will lose their

driven cars in mountain view and sunnyvale. this fall. at first, they'll only be used for mapping and will not carry passengers. crews hopes to reintroduce five driverless cars on area roads sometime after that. a year ago, cruise's operations were suspended in the bay area. last october, a san francisco pedestrian was hit by a car and knocked into the path of a self-driving cruise vehicle, which then dragged her to the side of the road. she was seriously hurt. >> this morning, there is a new tool on the way to help one east san jose neighborhood facing a string of armed robberies, small businesses in the alum rock village are getting new security cameras. the city set aside $50,000 for this pilot program.

it will give 35 businesses, cameras and install them for the owners. >> a lot of these businesses are family owned and they're small, so they don't have the even if they have the money to buy the cameras, they might not have the expertise to set it up. >> the cameras would be registered with the san jose police department. if a crime occurs, police can access that video. there is also an option for the police to monitor the cameras 24 over seven. well, this is the first neighborhood to receive cameras. there is a goal to expand the program to other neighborhoods that are facing high crime rates. >> oakland leaders and law enforcement are installing automated license plate readers around the city. oakland's police chief says 124 plate readers have already been installed. another 26 are expected to be up and operating this weekend. oakland has been allocated 290 cameras. the goal is to have them all installed by early november. a police lieutenant shared a story about how the plate readers were used

recently to help solve a crime. >> we gathered video surveillance and overlaid them with alpr and identified a suspect vehicle. the vehicle was stopped two days later and a suspect was arrested, who ultimately confessed to the shooting. >> the chp chp is also installing license plate readers on freeway ramps throughout oakland for privacy reasons. data is deleted after 30 days if it is not being used to prosecute a crime. now it's your morning money report. cisco laying off 842 bay area employees. according to records filed with the state last month, we reported the tech company was cutting 7% of its workers around the world. that's about 6000 jobs. we now know 134 san francisco workers and 708 santa clara county workers are included in those layoffs. the layoffs are expected to take effect november 15th. cisco also laid off more than 4200 people earlier this year. and now we

sunshine this afternoon. the accuweather headlines are calling for that warming trend continuing today and tomorrow. today. temperatures are back to average for the first time this week. and then those temperatures just accelerate over the weekend. we're talking about fall beginning on sunday morning, but it feels a lot more like summer by the end of the weekend. and then early next week we have some hot days coming our way. so let's preview the weekend forecast for you. a lot of sunshine both tomorrow and sunday. sunday is the warmer of the two days, but still both days. we'll find those temperatures above average by the afternoon. our warmest areas getting into the 90s for the first time in more than a week. so it's been quite some time since we've been that warm. here's today's forecast inland. lots of sunshine. we'll go into the mid 80s for daytime highs around the bay. shoreline clouds to sun low and mid 70s. this afternoon. and then along the coast we'll keep those temperatures in the low 60s. so today you look at the temperature map. these are average for this time of the year. it will be nice. we'll have light winds this afternoon. and sunshine breaking through those clouds between 10 a.m. and
