the bay area. we need to reach out and show everybody what we have to offer. >> the first entertainment zone celebration underway in california right now in san francisco. what it means for the city. good afternoon, i'm kristen z. thanks for joining us. >> and i'm larry beil. we begin today with the arrest of a cal fire firefighter. the 38 year old man from healdsburg suspected of setting a string of arson fires over the last six weeks. >> abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke to local firefighters and the suspect's estranged wife about the arrest. >> i'm still processing this, but, yeah, he's not here. he doesn't live here. nor has he. >> the estranged wife of a 38 year old cal fire apparatus engineer wants to stay anonymous, but says she's speechless about her husband's arrest for felony arson. abc seven news is not identifying the firefighter until he's been officially charged. here's a facebook post of him wearing cal fire gear. >> i don't think anyone will have any idea that this had been happening. >> you sound like you're in shock about this.

>> i'm 100% in shock. >> cal fire officers arrested the suspect friday morning at the howard forest fire station in willits. the department suspects him of causing five brush fires in sonoma county this summer while he was off duty, including the alexander fire on august 15th. the windsor river road fire on september eighth. the geysers fire on september 12th, and the geyser and kindle fires on september 14th. cal fire says all five brush fires burned less than an acre of wildland. due to the quick action of residents and firefighters, cal fire's director says i am appalled to learn one of our employees would violate the public's trust and attempt to tarnish the tireless work of the 12,000 women and men of cal fire. tyler says information from the public helped make the arrest. >> it's a tough pill to swallow for all of us. local firefighters, some who responded to the fires over the summer are saddened by the news. when you read that press release and you know, understand that that's someone that's supposed to be out in the community protecting

us, and they're actually putting us all in harm's way. it's hard, hard to read. >> the suspect will be booked into the sonoma county jail on suspicion of arson to forest land. he's scheduled to be arraigned next week in sonoma county. cornell bernard abc seven news. >> on to developing news now. investigators say they have cracked a cold case murder in the south bay from nearly 40 years ago. today, san jose police and the santa clara county da's office announced charges against joseph abeyta for the 1987 murder of this man, jesus ybarra. ybarra was found strangled with a power cord in his apartment on nordale avenue in san jose. evidence shows the two men knew each other. no suspects were identified at the time the case went cold. officials say dna evidence tested this year linked abeyta to ybarra's body and the crime scene. >> we were able to use crime lab technology through the santa clara district attorney's office to really lock down dna as proof that the suspect was there was present in that apartment and was was one responsible for the

murder. >> abate is already in jail for an unrelated crime. >> a judge is delaying his decision on whether to dismiss charges against three alameda police officers in the 2021 death of mario gonzalez. the judge says he will issue a written ruling next month on whether to dismiss those manslaughter charges against the officers. 26 year old mario gonzalez died three years ago while being taken into custody. the officer's attorneys argued this morning that the da's office didn't file all the necessary paperwork in time to meet the three year statute of limitations. prosecutors say they did meet the necessary requirements outside of court. gonzalez's family and other community members gathered to protest bogus a sham investigation cleared these cops. >> it's only because the people demanded that a new da be elected, that we even have a shot at justice reviews by the previous da. >> the sheriff's office in the city of alameda all found the

officers were not criminally liable. the alameda county coroner's office later ruled gonzalez's death a homicide caused in part by the stress of the altercation. >> happening now, san francisco, celebrating the opening of the first entertainment zone in california. >> it's an area where people can enjoy food and drinks right there on the street. tonight's event is underway on front street between sacramento and california. >> abc seven news reporter luz pena joins us live on front street, where thousands of people are expected as the event continues tonight. luz >> hey, guys, this is a monumental time for restaurants and bars in san francisco. this is the first entertainment zone in the state. and it's happening here in san francisco. as you can see here, thousands of people here. they're projecting about 4000 people to come to downtown's front street. as you can see, many of them have made their way here. and you may ask, what does an entertainment zone actually mean? well, before sb 76, it was illegal for restaurants and bars to sell alcohol and for people to drink

it outside. well that's no longer the case. as you can see, many people are drinking, and that's because this is a entertainment zone. it's a victory for bars and restaurants throughout san francisco. this is the first entertainment zone in the state is a really big deal. >> so but some people don't know is this is years and years in the making. >> ben bleiman is the owner of harrington's bar and grill and also the founder of california nightlife association. >> there were key supporters of senate bill 76, which made entertainment zones possible. >> we're full, fully staffed. >> i had to hire ringers to come in from my old businesses and people, friends of friends, to come in because we don't even have enough staff to cover what we're expecting today. >> before senate bill 76 passed last year, it was illegal for bars and restaurants to sell alcohol onto the street. even if a city designated the area for entertainment. now that's changed. the one behind this bill, senator scott wiener. >> this new law that we passed

gives cities the ability to decide whether they establish one of these entertainment zones, and thus allow local bars and restaurants to participate. >> today's entertainment zone is happening during oktoberfest, a key time the city hopes will attract more people to the area. >> we're really looking to view downtown in a different light. it's not just a place for folks to come work anymore, it's actually a place to come and enjoy and have a good time. >> this entertainment zone is set to be one of many to come. >> there will be more. there have been other parts of the city, including ones that already have street festivals that want to turn it into an entertainment zone because it will be more flexible. >> and this entertainment zone is happening until 10 p.m. tonight. as you can see, many people are enjoying their time here. and something else happening tonight in san francisco at 7 p.m. is a free music concert at civic center plaza. this is obviously san

francisco's strategy to bring people back to downtown and hey, it's working. yeah. live in san francisco. luz pena, abc seven news. >> all right. so they got the entertainment zone set up. i imagine this is not a one off, right? there's got to be more of these events planned. >> this is the beginning of more entertainment zones that are set to happen here in san francisco. we know that at least four others are set to happen in the coming months. so of course we'll keep you updated on that for now. this is obviously a success. >> all right, party on loose. >> and the entertainment zone is an effort to revitalize downtown san francisco. as lou mentioned. but what about mid-market with companies like x leaving, what can make a difference? abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez takes a look. coming up at 430. >> now a traffic alert in the east bay over the weekend. part of interstate 680 southbound will be closed for construction work starting at 9:00 tonight. the stretch from acosta boulevard in san ramon to interstate 580 in pleasanton

sacramento and ultimately las vegas. but not here. not yet, and not here. right? yeah. >> all right. so indeed, it is the beginning of the end. and you know what? we're going to take a look at their final home stand ever at the coliseum really closely. yeah. >> and they're playing the yankees tonight. so the crowd should be good. first of three. this weekend, abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has a look ahead. >> i mean, i'm 61 years old. i've been going to those games for quite some time. >> stu cleary has been a diehard oakland a's fan for more than 40 years. he's gone to so many games, he's lost count. >> hundreds easily. you know, thousands. >> perhaps with the team's imminent departure for sacramento and eventually las vegas. cleary says he's feeling so many emotions right now. >> numb, i guess. sad. melancholy. i mean, my kids are in their late 20s. they grew up going to the coliseum. you know, think of all the memories we've had over the years. >> here's cleary and his son in the 1989 world series trophy.

here's former a's scott hatteberg and cleary's son, gordie. 22 years ago, cleary, a baseball coach and teacher at vacaville high school, came up with a reverse boycott event. that's when thousands of fans, rather than staying away from the coliseum, showed up in huge numbers last june, urging owner john fisher to sell the team to allow the a's to stay in oakland. while many fans are heartbroken or even angry about the a's move, patrick and patricia campbell of new jersey are marking an incredible milestone. >> i'd love to watch baseball. >> how many ballparks have you been to? >> every one of them, i think. what are they? 30, 26, 26, 26? all of them. >> people would say, how many settings do you have left? >> and we'd say, oh, we got 12. what are they? oh, we got eight. >> oh, we got six and then two. >> baseball is a huge part of many families. >> our kids love it. our grandchildren love it. >> as much as his family loves baseball, cleary says seeing the oakland a's leave town hurts

this week. >> it's certainly going to be bittersweet for everyone. >> the very last a's game at oakland coliseum is next thursday. >> i'm going to leave my house about seven in the morning and get there. hope to get there as soon as the gates open and we'll cook up some breakfast. i'll be there on next thursday for the last game for sure. >> suzanne phan. abc seven news. >> and today we're learning more about the finalized deal between the coliseum and its new tenant. the oakland roots men's soccer team, the coliseum authority, confirmed the team will be responsible for installing the field. we've also learned the women's soccer team, the soul, will not be playing at the coliseum. that means next year, the stadium will host anywhere from 17 to 23 soccer games. >> more sports news and kaiser just dropping like flies on the 40 niners roster. tight end george kittle. he is now doubtful for sunday's game in l.a. against the rams because of a hamstring injury suffered this week in practice. now kittle figure to be one of brock purdy's prime targets, with christian mccaffrey and deebo samuel both out. but the niners

day of summer. fall arrives on sunday morning, sunshine, and it's going to be heating up and early next week, sizzling inland, warm at the coast. so let's talk about the hourly forecast. if you have friday night plans. fog along the coast a little breezy, so you'll want to grab the jackets. 50s at 515. inland areas will still be pretty comfortable as we head toward 725 a 70s inland 50s coast side. the fog will begin to spread overnight and into tomorrow morning, but it will begin to compress, so it's not going to go into the valleys, mainly around the bay and along the coastline. tomorrow afternoon we'll get you up into the 80s and 90s inland 60s coast side. and then tomorrow evening should be a nice one for the last day of summer. your morning temperatures in the 50s and 60s tomorrow afternoon you are going to notice. it's a very pleasant day. san jose and the south bay 85 degrees 71. santa cruz 86 morgan hill on the peninsula. palo alto and los altos 77 degrees 64 and half moon bay. downtown san francisco 70

degrees. north bay temperatures upper 80s from sonoma to santa rosa 84, in san rafael, you know, all week long the temperatures have been really running behind where they should be for this time of year, but they're bouncing back, coming up closer to average 76 in oakland, 81 in fremont. inland areas 90 in concord, 91 in livermore, 89 in pleasanton. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. and we are going to feel that summer warmth tomorrow. low 90s inland mid 60s coast seasons are changing on sunday at 543. fall begins. we bring on the heat. mid 90s inland. don't worry, the coast is going to remain comfortable. i know people start complaining when we say it's going to be warm to hot. well, you're going to feel it on monday. triple digits inland 70s coast side and the heat continues on tuesday before the temperatures start to slide mid to late in the week. who would complain? >> hoo! >> hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo! where are they? >> i don't know. everybody loves what you do. >> i love how you look at him.

area. >> i would say a lot. so you need time a structured plan, and maybe a miracle. so just to just to give you a sense of how the area has struggled in the mid 80s. well known columnist herb caen referred to the mid market area as la grande pissoirs, a public urinal. companies like twitter block, reddit, uber and dolby had headquarters there today, only dolby remains lobby, which was once bustling with twitter employees, is now filled with a quiet desolation. now known as x, the company was once the second largest tenant in the mid market area, with more than 450,000ft■!s of space. nobody misses their business more than ferit uyar, owner of market street gyro. >> of course, when they left, they hurt us as this street is always get worse. >> x's move adds to a neighborhood in crisis. many

small businesses here have been forced to close because of rampant drug use and ongoing criminal activity. >> the last two months they broke my window three times. they stolen my stuff inside. it's the sceneries go bad every day. go bad. >> you know, there is a lack of foot traffic in the area. offices that used to be full of workers are now empty as remote work continues. this is hitting this particular neighborhood hard. >> solution we need more people coming to work. office, this empty office fill up. you know it's all empty. >> the mid-market area has struggled for decades. when tech companies started filling the neighborhood, things improved. but when work from home became a new norm, many companies seemed hesitant to bring employees back in person, full time for fear of losing them. salesforce recently announced that as of october first, its employees must be working on site 4 to 5 times a

week. the hope is that other companies will follow their lead. >> i hope that it does. we know this new generation loves the work life balance. after the pandemic, so what we want to do is make sure that companies are doing their part for whatever days a week. we're hoping it's at least four. >> when it moved here in 2012, twitter was seen by many in the city as the fortress that would economically strengthen the area. for six years, the city gave them a tax break, $70 million in tax revenue were lost, and the revitalization plans never really took off as intended. last year, ikea opened in the area and this year saleh hall, a large food court, followed. still, the vacant spaces are proof that the neighborhood has yet to turn a corner. some mayoral candidates have proposed reopening market street to cars in order to help businesses in early 2020, the downtown area became a car free

corridor. only public transportation and bicycles are currently allowed, but the san francisco municipal transportation agency reports that the number of bicycles in the city has dropped in 2021, 4.7 million bicycles were counted throughout the city, from a high of 10.8 million in 2019. by using sensors embedded in the pavement, the agency can track bicycles. for example, there is one in front of the building that once housed x by 2:45 p.m, only 1005 bicycles and electric scooters on that day had gone through the mid market area. another plan that may help to revitalize the area is a recent law to convert empty office spaces into housing. the idea is to attract developers by offering tax incentives. >> that law was just signed and will have, we think, an impact at least adjacent to mid-market in the downtown core in san

francisco. >> but for many of the businesses who are trying to survive here, help can't come soon enough. is there a point where you just say, i can't do this anymore? >> i can't, of course i can't do anymore. that's why i say it's hard to survive. >> really hard. so the idea of bringing back cars on market street is a hotly contested issue. but we have to point out that businesses on major streets and avenues in other cities, like fifth avenue in new york, michigan avenue in chicago, are thriving. now, what do they have in common? they have bicycles, busses and cars. i love market street. i walk it all the time. yeah i love the wide streets and the fact that it's flat. it's in san francisco and it has so much potential. but nothing has happened for decades and decades there. they try and it fails. they try and they fail and we fail. >> so many leading urban planners here, and they look at that, the combination and we haven't found a winning one.

>> right. >> i wish they could make it clean it up and make it like a promenade, at least at times on the weekends or what. you know something? >> you're hired. >> you don't know what my rate is. thank you. >> all right. >> caring for our environment is a part of building a better bay area. today, the port of oakland gave us a look at the future of green transportation. the port hosted a ride and drive event this morning. it was a chance for truck drivers to test the latest zero emissions vehicle technology and learn about funding incentives for green trucks. the port of oakland says this is all part of improving air quality at the port, and surrounding areas. >> we are going to zero emissions operations at the port of oakland. this is another significant step in getting to that goal. so when we put cleaner trucks on the road, that means we've got cleaner air. >> the port of oakland partnered with several organizations for today's event, including the harbor trucking association and california air resources board. california continues to cut

greenhouse gas emissions. that's according to a new california air resources board report. it shows a 2.4% drop in emissions from 2021 to 2022. that's equivalent to 2.2 million gasoline powered cars, according to the report. california's economy is now 55% less carbon intense than it was 20 years ago. emissions did rise in the residential and commercial sector due to increased commercial activity coming up, social media spying and the gene
