ages of 45 to 50. >> i spoke with doctor jay balwani, a urologist at kaiser permanente san rafael. he says screening should start at age 50 for men in the u.s. but for black men, the recommendation is to start at age 45, because there's about a two and a half times increase in mortality for black men due to prostate cancer, compared to caucasian men in the u.s. is it because they aren't getting screened as soon as they should be? >> well, it's a combination of factors. the first thing is, is there may be an association with ethnicity for black men that have west african descent, but it also is due to socioeconomic issues as well. >> so what does screening involve? doctor belani says it's a simple blood test that should be done even if you don't have symptoms. >> the problem with prostate cancer is most people are asymptomatic. they don't have any symptoms. if you start to develop symptoms like more difficulty urinating, blood in the urine, weight loss, you know, poor appetite, then you worry you may have more of a

progression of the prostate cancer. and that's why we strongly encourage men to come in to get the screening tests done, because then you catch it early, you catch it at a time when it is quite readily treatable and it has and it has less of an impact, i should say, on your quality of life. >> so bottom line, talk to your doctor. all men 50 and up should get the blood test. men who are 45 to 50 who are at high risk for developing prostate cancer should get the test done. so that's black men and those with a family member who has had prostate cancer. and honestly, he says if you're 40 and have more than one relative who's had it, you should probably consider getting tested. >> probably better safe than sorry. >> exactly. >> all right. if you're driving in the east bay, we have a traffic alert you should know about this weekend. part of 680 southbound is closed for construction work. the stretch from acosta boulevard in san ramon to 580 in pleasanton will not reopen until 4 a.m. monday, presumably in time for the morning commute. all 580 and 680 connectors will be open along
