keep apps from sending notifications to minors during school hours or late at night. the governor released a statement saying in part, quote, every parent knows the harm. social media addiction can inflict on their children. with this bill, california is helping protect children and teenagers from purposefully designed features that feed these destructive habits. now, speaking of. if you think you're being tracked on social media, you're not alone. and now the ftc is sounding the alarm. the federal trade commission is calling on congress to pass new laws to protect your privacy. this after they found social media companies like facebook, tiktok and x among others, engaging in what they called vast surveillance of people using their apps. the ftc is also urging companies to limit data collection and delete user data. we're following new developments when it comes to the flu. the fda has just approved the first flu vaccine that doesn't have to be given by a health care provider. here it is. it's flu mist, a nasal spray

at clinicians offices. now your health is important to us here at abc seven. september is prostate cancer awareness month. screening is a great tool to monitor prostate health, but one group in particular, black men, are not getting screened as much as other groups. it's an issue because black men have a higher chance of mortality from prostate cancer. here's abc seven news anchor ama daetz with more. >> on average, black men are about 10 to 30% less likely to get screened for prostate cancer compared to non african-american men. and it's even worse for younger black men between the ages of 45 to 50. >> i spoke with doctor j. balwani, a urologist at kaiser permanente san rafael. he says screening should start at age 50 for men in the u.s, but for black men, the recommendation is to start at age 45, because there's about a two and a half times increase in mortality for black men due to prostate cancer, compared to caucasian men in the u.s. is it because they aren't getting screened as
6:16 am
soon as they should be? >> well, it's a combination of factors. the first thing is, is there may be an association with ethnicity, for black men that have west african descent, but it also is due to socioeconomic issues as well. >> so what does screening involve? doctor balwani says it's a simple blood test that should be done even if you don't have symptoms. >> the problem with prostate cancer is most people are asymptomatic. they don't have any symptoms. if you start to develop symptoms like more difficulty urinating, blood in the urine, weight loss, you kno, poor appetite, then you worry you may have more of a progression of the prostate cancer. and that's why we strongly encourage men to come in to get the screening tests done, because then you catch it early. you catch it at a time when it is quite readily treatable, and it has and it has less of an impact, i should say, on your quality of life. >> ama daetz abc seven news. >> the bottom line here. talk to your doctor. all men 50 and older should get the blood test. and men who are between the ages
6:17 am
of 45 and 50, who are at higher risk for developing prostate cancer, should get the test done. that's black men and those with a family member who have had prostate cancer in the past. and doctor j. balwani says if you're 40 and have more than one relative who's had it, you might consider getting tested. all right, turning to southern california now, fire and water combining to provide another example of the effect climate change is having on our state. city officials in lake elsinore say they've lost thousands of fish as the airport wildfire dumps ash and heat on the already delicate ecosystem. ash has covered the lake for days, blocking sunlight to the algae, which caused about 6000 fish to suffocate. so this week, the city has been pumping extra oxygen into the water. >> we stalk bass, we stalk bluegill. we've got wild carp in here, and so we've got a very, very robust ecosystem here. but when things happen, temperatures fire, all the ash, things get out of whack.
6:18 am
>> it could be a while before there's any natural relief. right now, the airport fire is just over 50% contained. well, today is the 40th anniversary of the california coastal cleanup. environmental groups will be cleaning up the state's coastline starting at 10:00. over 50,000 californians will pick up an estimated 1 million pounds of trash. the cleanup happens every year before the rainy season in hopes of keeping trash out of creeks, drains and the ocean. to find out where you can participate in this year's cleanup, you can go to coastal cleanup day.org. and it comes as we're expecting a warmth this weekend. let's check in with francis on what to expect. >> yeah, temperatures are going to warm up several degrees for many areas around the bay area, and that's great news, especially in san francisco, because we'll get some sunshine this afternoon. we saw a little bit of it yesterday. and we'll get more this weekend. and in the coming days. here's a look at live doppler seven satellite
