state is taking another step toward protecting kids from the potential harmful effects of social media. governor gavin newsom signed a bill targeting social media addiction. it would make it illegal for platforms to knowingly provide addictive feeds to children without parental consent. it would also keep apps from sending notifications to minors during school hours or late at night. the governor released a statement saying in part, quote, every parent knows the harm. social media addiction can inflict on their children. with this bill, california is helping protect children and teenagers from purposely designed features that feed these destructive habits. well, last night marked the start of a new era in entertainment on the streets of san francisco, one that could help pull the city out of a financial downtrend. the oktoberfest celebration took place along front street in downtown san francisco. it's the event city leaders are using to unveil the newly dedicated entertainment zone, the first of

just to prove the first flu vaccine that does not have be given by a health care provider. here's what it looks like. it's flumist, a nasal spray from astrazeneca. it was first approved in 2003, but starting next year, you'll be able to administer it yourself. you'll still need a prescription, though, to get this vaccine. now this week on our 3 p.m. show getting answers, we talked to ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin-hong about this new vaccine. >> it's great for people who don't like needles, 1 in 4 americans, are somewhat needle phobic, and the big difference that's revolutionary a little

bit is that you can just go online and get a pharmacist to, review you, and then you can get it mailed to home, the caveat is that it's killed or weakened virus. so people who are immune compromised, or if you're pregnant, we it wouldn't be a great idea. and it's not approved for those over the age of 50. >> doctor chin-hong says the nasal vaccine is available now at clinicians offices. your health is important to us here at abc seven, and september is prostate cancer awareness month. screening, of course, is a great tool to monitor prostate health. but one group in particular, black men, are not getting screened as much as other groups. it's an issue because black men have a higher chance of mortality from prostate cancer. here's abc seven news anchor ama daetz. >> on average, black men are about 10 to 30% less likely to get screened for prostate cancer compared to non african-american men. and it's even worse for
8:14 am
younger black men between the ages of 45 to 50. >> i spoke with doctor j. balwani, a urologist at kaiser permanente san rafael. he says screening should start at age 50 for men in the u.s, but for black men, the recommendation is to start at age 45, because there's about a two and a half times increase in mortality for black men due to prostate cancer, compared to caucasian men in the u.s. is it because they aren't getting screened as soon as they should be? >> well, it's a combination of factors. the first thing is, is there may be an association with ethnicity, for black men that have west african descent, but it also is due to socioeconomic issues as well. >> so what does screening involve? doctor balwani says it's a simple blood test that should be done even if you don't have symptoms. >> the problem with prostate cancer is most people are asymptomatic. they don't have any symptoms. if you start to develop symptoms like more difficulty urinating, blood in the urine, weight loss, you kno, poor appetite, then you worry
8:15 am
you may have more of a progression of the prostate cancer. and that's why we strongly encourage men to come in to get the screening tests done, because then you catch it early. you catch it at a time when it is quite readily treatable, and it has and it has less of an impact, i should say, on your quality of life. >> ama daetz abc seven news. >> so the bottom line here. talk to your doctor. all men 50 and older should get the blood test. and men who are between the ages of 45 and 50, who are at higher risk for developing prostate cancer, should get the test done. that's black men and those with a family member who's had prostate cancer and doctor j. balwani says if you're 40 and you have more than one relative who's had it, you might consider getting tested. all right. caltrain is on track to build a better bay area this weekend. the train fleet goes electric. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez says the excitement is in the air. bay area commuters are saying

8:17 am
>> these trains are faster to accelerate, so we're going to be able to provide more frequency. weekend service is going to bump up to half hourly over hourly, which is a big improvement. >> riders can now make a trip from san francisco to san jose in under an hour. >> if we want to combat climate change, this is how we do it. we don't have to get it to completely zero emissions tomorrow, but we do need to give people a viable alternative to driving. and these new trains are awesome. >> if bay area residents decide to utilize caltrans all electric service, that would be the equivalent of taking 55,000 gas powered cars off the road. we spoke with one woman who plans to attend all the community celebrations. caltrans has planned saturday and sunday with her 15 year old grandson. >> people have different hobbie, different things they want to get into, and i think if you're into trains, what a nice one. very expensive one. >> caltrain will offer free rides throughout the weekend for the rest of us. >> us old folks. the quietness might be nice in san jose. >> lauren martinez abc seven news.

8:19 am
>> the drink is said to have originated in oakland at the original hinky dinks on san pablo at 65th street, and that bar became trader vic's, which is a tiki style restaurant on the emeryville waterfront. >> today, victor bergeron opens locations around the world. the mai tai was brought to hotel bars in hawaii and beyond. >> he was just whipping up some random cocktails because he was very creative guy and, you know, he just whipped up something, handed it to his friends, and she said, mai tai royale, which means out of this world, the best in tahitian. >> the restaurant group recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. the city council is set to declare the mai tai its official cocktail on october 1st, so, frances, are you a mai tai fan? >> i am, in fact. i was really surprised that it originated in oakland. i know, how neat is that? yeah, i just visualize it with like, hawaii being at the

assassination attempt against former president trump, revealing, quote, multiple operation and communication failures. the assessment also concluded, quote, a lack of diligence by agency personnel. a stunning admission there was complacency on the part of others that led to a breach of security protocols. among the most glaring failures, the secret service did not have proper coordination with local police. they never came up with a plan to secure that roof, which had a direct line of sight to where former president trump was speaking. >> so there was a lack of clarity that that roof should be secure, period. full stop. >> there was a discussion about how the roof was going to be secured. and i think what it came back to is we should have challenged what that how that mechanism was, was being implemented, meaning we should have been more direct. >> another utter breakdown. key secret service personnel could not hear radio traffic revealing the local police search for a man acting suspiciously, and the

he does not appear at a new court date. musk did not appear for testimony last week in an investigation related to his takeover of x, formerly known as twitter. the sec is now looking into whether he followed the law when disclosing his purchase of twitter stock. lawyers for musk say court intervention is not necessary because a new testimony date has already been agreed upon and set here in the bay area. it's been a week since x, formerly known as twitter, officially vacated its headquarters here in san francisco. it's no longer at market and 10th streets. the exit leaves many to question the future of the mid market area, which has been struggling, as we all know for decades now. here's abc seven's building a better bay area reporter, lyanne melendez. >> the lobby, which was once bustling with twitter employees, is now filled with a quiet desolation. now known as x, the company was once the second largest tenant in the mid market area, with more than 450,000ft■s
