kia wnba most valuable player award. that is coming up. >> janai: and despite that video, it's not ellie the elephant. but very exciting announcement that we're excited to share with you. we do start this morning with very heartbreaking news. another mass shooting overnight in america. this one in birmingham, alabama, in an area filled with restaurants and bars. >> gio: investigators saying there were multiple shooters who opened fire and an intense search is on right now. abc's phil lipof is here with more on this. good morning, phil. >> good morning, gio. think about how terrifying this must have been. this is a crowded area of the city, it's around 11:00 last night and people out for dinner and drinks and then the gunshots. this morning, police in birmingham, alabama, are searching for what they believe are multiple shooters who opened fire on a crowd last night around 11:00. it happened in the city's five point south area, known for its restaurants and bars, and it is packed on a saturday night.

video capturing the chaotic aftermath of the shooting. the investigation is still very active, but what we know so far is that three people died at the scene and one other died at the hospital. dozens are injured so far. we know four of them have life-threatening injuries. >> it was very devastating. very, and sad. >> reporter: investigators say it appears that the shooters took aim at a group of people, either on the sidewalk or in the street. it's unclear if the shooters walked up to the crowd or drove by. but police are trying to figure out if a switch was used. that is a device that allows a gun to fire as an automatic weapon. no motive so far in the attack. so investigators have called in the fbi and atf to help. they are asking anyone who was in that area and either witnessed the shooting or might have video of the shooting or the aftermath of it to forward that video to the birmingham police. again, four people dead, dozens more injured in the latest mass shooting in this country.

janai? >> janai: an unfortunate reality in this country. phil, thank you for that. now to the race for the white house. former president trump campaigns in north carolina, ruling out a second debate with vice president harris and avoiding talking about the controversial republican candidate for governor there. abc's rachel scott joins us live in studio with the unusual situation there in what is a very important battleground state. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: hey, janai, good morning to you. it is a critical battleground state. typically, the republican nominee for president would be campaigning with the republican nominee for governor, especially in the all-important state of north carolina. but after all of these disturbing allegations about mark robinson, trump is trying to distance himself, not mentioning his name a single time. >> president donald j. trump! >> reporter: with just 44 days to go, donald trump touching down in north carolina. >> and hello to north carolina. >> reporter: as the republican he endorsed for governor is surrounded in scandal and controversy.

cnn reports that mark robinson made a series of racist and inflammatory online posts, including one where he called himself a quote, black nazi, and allegedly adding that slavery is not bad and wished it would come back. abc news has not independently confirmed the reports. robinson continues to deny the allegations. robinson was not at trump's rally. the former president's running mate, j.d. vance, asked if he believed the report. >> the allegations are pretty far out there. but allegations aren't necessarily reality. >> reporter: some trump supporters worry it could be a drag on the ticket. >> things i've seen and heard don't sit well with me. >> reporter: trump is keenly aware of how important north carolina is. >> if we win this state, it will be over fast. >> reporter: while the former president is leading on key issues like the economy and immigration, he's also losing ground on female voters, now offering up this message. >> women will be happy, healthy, confident and free. you will no longer be thinking about abortion, because it is now where it always had to be, with the states. >> reporter: trump appointed

three of the supreme court justices who overturned roe v. wade, something vice president kamala harris has seized on. >> the former president chose three members of the united states supreme court, with the intention that they would overdo the protections of roe v. wade. >> reporter: and this morning, harris challenged trump to another debate. trump now completely ruling it out. >> she's done one debate. i've done two. it's too late to do another. i would love to in many ways, but it's too late. >> reporter: of course, trump himself participated in october debates in 2016 and 2020. the former president once insisted he would debate president biden anytime, anywhere, any place. guys, i was at that rally just yesterday. he was still complaining that president biden is no longer in the race. >> whit: we will see how that plays out, whether it's a hard no or we'll see if that changes as we get closer to election day. let's bring in for a deeper dive, we have jonathan karl, our chief washington correspondent. rachel, we'll stay with you and talk more here. i want to pick up where you left off, talking about north carolina and the controversy that's playing out in the

governor's race there. you were talking to voters. how are they responding and reacting to all of this? >> a lot have serious concerns about these allegations. they are not completely sold on mark robinson, even though they are behind former president donald trump. this is a critical state. you talk to the trump campaign, they say this is absolutely vital. having a republican nominee for governor who's facing all of these disturbing allegations in the final weeks is not something that republicans want to see. it's notable that senator j.d. vance says that he has no plans to campaign with mark robinson. also said it's going to be up to the voters to decide. but still, trump not withdrawing his endorsement. >> janai: that is fascinating. not withdrawing the endorsement, but not out there campaigning with him. rachel, thank you. and, jon, where do the polls put the race now? >> it's a jump ball. if you look at the fivethiryeight national average, kamala harris has the lead just under 3%. but remember, hillary clinton won the popular vote by just about 2%. so, that really could add up to a victory or a loss for kamala harris.

and in north carolina, the race is virtually tied. it's really well within the margin of error. but that's before this latest development with mark robinson. so she actually looks stronger in north carolina right now than she looks in georgia, which joe biden won four years ago. >> gio: and, jon, the vice president accepted that invitation for a second debate, but we saw in rachel's piece that trump is saying it's just too late. does this hurt him or help him? >> well, do you believe him? i mean, look, he said that he wasn't going to do our debate before he said he would do our debate. as rachel pointed out, he said he'll debate anytime, any place. look, in some sense, it's rational for him to say he's not going to debate again, because kamala harris is the one that really needs another debate. people know who trump is. people are still learning who kamala harris is. obviously, the last one went very well for her. i think it's still a huge temptation. 70 million plus voters, you know, a chance to be on that stage again. we'll see. i think that you won't really know whether or not he'll do it

until after he sees how the vice presidential debate plays out in just over a week. >> gio: all right. jon karl, rachel scott, thank you very much. we appreciate you, as always. we'll turn overseas now to the fighting in the middle east. israel and hezbollah exchanging heavy fire overnight. we've got team coverage in the region. let's begin with abc's marcus moore in lebanon. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: good morning, gio. we have witnessed another active day in southern lebanon and northern israel. multiple air strikes overnight. and hezbollah hitting targets deeper inside israel and with higher caliber warheads. it is clear now that this war is still intensifying. new air strikes between israel and lebanon overnight, lighting up the sky across lebanon's southern border. the idf saying hezbollah was preparing to launch missiles at israel. as a result, they struck more than 400 targets in lebanon. idf spokesman daniel hagari saying dozens of israeli air force aircraft are currently striking terrorist targets and

rocket launchers to remove the threat to israeli citizens. hezbollah returning fire, striking this neighborhood outside of hafah. this rocket seen here in nazareth was intercepted. the group saying part of this morning's rocket barrage was an initial response to the exploding pagers and handheld radios, the simultaneous blasts over two days this week killed 37 people and injured thousands, according to lebanon's health ministry. >> our al jazeera office in occupied west bank has just been raided. >> reporter: while in the occupied west bank, tensions coming to a head, as israeli troops raided the al jazeera bureau in ramallah. the news organization airing in realtime the moment troops forced the bureau to shut down for 45 days. while in gaza, pure devastation. on friday, an idf air strike hit a school, killing at least 22 people according to the gaza health ministry. and this young girl surviving an air strike, rescuers pulling her from the rubble of a destroyed

residential building. and an update now on that israeli air strike that killed a top hezbollah commander, ibrahim akyl here in beirut. the lebanese health ministry says the death toll has now climbed to 51, as hezbollah prepares to bury akyl in a funeral here in beirut in just a few hours from now. janai? >> janai: marcus, thank you for that update. now let's get a read on u.s. strategy from abc's chief global affairs correspondent, martha raddatz, who is also live in the region in tel aviv this morning. martha, you have some new reporting? >> reporter: yes, janai. a senior u.s. official telling me this morning that despite efforts by the administration to tamp down things the u.s. believes a widening conflict with lebanon is inevitable, and that the table is set for escalation. the officials said that israel is emboldened after its successful attacks on hezbollah and that hezbollah, despite its loss of senior leaders and countless members is enraged and

wants retaliation. the official says that president biden has been briefed on all of this. but there is growing frustration with the israelis who the officials say have undermined us at every step. a major concern is for the tens of thousands of american citizens living in lebanon. and there's an ominous state department warning this morning for americans not to travel to lebanon and for those living there to depart lebanon while commercial options are still available. janai? >> janai: wow. while they are still available. martha, thank you for that. and make sure you tune into "this week," later this morning. george stephanopoulos interviews white house national security communications adviser john kirby about those escalating tensions in the middle east. whit? >> whit: and janai, with conflicts raging overseas in the middle and ukraine, the united nations general assembly set to convene tomorrow under a

massive security presence. abc's jay o'brien is joining us now with what to expect. jay, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. president biden will address the u.n. on tuesday. white house officials say the top priorities for him is re-affirming american leadership on the world stage, especially in a chaotic election year, and also trying to end brutal conflicts in ukraine and gaza. it was just a few weeks before the start of the israel/hamas war that was the last time that these more than 140 world leaders gathered together at the u.n. now, that conflict in that region and those tensions will take center stage. prime minister benjamin netanyahu of israel is expected to address the u.n. on thursday, as well as palestinian authority leader mahmoud abbas. meantime, outside, hundreds of demonstrators are expected. the nypd chief saying that the war in gaza has changed the dynamic of those protests. the u.s. secret service, which is under pressure after those two assassination attempts against former president trump, they will be in charge of much of the security for those world leaders, and gridlock is expected across huge swaths of manhattan. meantime, u.n. officials are also telegraphing that world

leaders and other issues top of mind for them will be what will american diplomacy look like if donald trump returns to the white house. gio? >> gio: jay, thank you so much for your reporting there. we'll turn now to the latest on the arrest of sean diddy combs. the music mogul facing federal racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges. the case follows a years-long fall from grace. abc's morgan norwood has a look at how we got here. good morning, morgan. just a wild story. >> good morning, gio. just a staggering fall from grace that began with a lawsuit from former girlfriend, cassie ventura, alleging years of abuse. since them, diddy has been at the center of multiple lawsuits, federal raids, and now a sweeping indictment. the feds are looking to quickly close in on alleged co-conspirators who for years kept quiet and helped keep that alleged criminal enterprise running. ♪ who's the boss ♪ ♪ i'm gonna cool off ♪ >> reporter: this morning, the sex trafficking case against

sean diddy combs moving full speed ahead. lawyers for combs and prosecutors set to hold a status conference to determine the next phase following the sweeping indictment alleging the music mogul leveraged his business empire, power, and prestige to abuse his alleged victims. >> he used his business and employees of that business and other close associates to get his way. those individuals allegedly included high-ranking supervisors in the business, personal assistants, security staff, and household staff. >> reporter: as the disgraced rapper faces racketeering, conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution charges, investigators now working to determine who his alleged co-conspirators were, and whether they, too, should be charged. 54-year-old combs pleading not guilty to charges that he led a racketeering conspiracy that abused women. >> i'm going to fight like hell to get him released and he should be released. >> reporter: the indictment alleges some of combs' employees help set off so-called freakoffs, in which women were forced into sex acts with male prostitutes.

>> he used the embarrassing and sensitive recordings he made of the freakoffs as collateral against the victims. >> reporter: prosecutors say authorities seized records, along with firearms, drugs, and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant, during raids last march on diddy's homes in miami and los angeles. ♪ something's controlling me ♪ >> reporter: combs has been under criminal investigation since his former partner recording artist, cassie ventura, accused him in a civil lawsuit of rape, repeated abuse, and even sex trafficking. at the center of the case, this 2016 video, exclusively obtained by cnn, showing a 2016 altercation caught on surveillance video, of combs grabbing and kicking ventura. the lawsuit was settled with no admission of wrongdoing. combs issuing an apology video back in may. >> i hit rock bottom. i make no excuses. my behavior on that video is inexcusable. >> reporter: since then, the rapper, the subject of multiple civil lawsuits, allegations which he has denied.
