[applause] next on abc7 news, hotel guests say it's bad timing for a city on the rebound right now. workers at some of the biggest hotels in san francisco are on strike. money problems, staffing shortages and school closures. the big issues being discussed in a rare sunday meeting about san francisco unified schools.

>> i'm spencer christian, it's the first day of fall, but we have summer-like heat. i'll have the accuweather forecast. abc7 news at five starts right now. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now >> making their demands known. hotel workers at some of san francisco's busiest hotels are now on strike. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. more than a thousand hotel workers in san francisco hit the picket line today. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at their demands and the broader impact of the strike. 1500 san francisco hotel workers off the job and on the picket line sunday, one day longer cooks, servers, bellhops, housekeepers and more are striking at three hotels the grand hyatt, westin saint francis and the hilton union

square, demanding a new contract. >> we've been bargaining for months now. we're very far apart on our really key issues like our health care, our wages, our pension. >> michelle brown gordon is a hotel phone operator. she's hoping to retire soon. >> the contract the hyatt is offering is garbage. i am 64 years old. i'll be 65 in 6 months. can't retire without a good contract. >> we need to pay our bills or mortgage. pay the food, pay the gas. so everything is expensive. that's why we need to increase our wages. >> the strike following months of contract negotiations between union workers and the hotels. this is a continuation of the strike which happened over labor day weekend, when thousands of hotel workers walked off the job in several u.s. cities, including san francisco and san jose. some hotel guests were surprised to see and hear a picket line out front. we weren't expecting this loud ruckus. >> the kids are like, it's too

loud. >> the strike action comes at a challenging time for san francisco hotels and the tourism industry, still recovering from the pandemic. >> san francisco is hurting right now, and this isn't helping. >> in response, hyatt said, we are disappointed that unite here local two has chosen to strike once again. while hyatt remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith, we have contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to strike activity. and this from westin. owned by marriott, the westin saint francis remains open. we remain available to meet with the local union negotiating committee to reach an agreement that is fair to all parties. striking hotel workers say they are willing to be off the job as long as it takes. could be days. could be weeks. you're willing to be on the picket line for that long? >> that's right. i'm willing to be on the picket line until we win in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> mayor london breed is allocating $8.4 million to help the san francisco unified school district. it all comes after the

district's board held a closed door emergency meeting this morning about the fate of superintendent matt wayne and questions about his leadership. the school district is facing some huge challenges. last week, wayne delayed an announcement of possible school closures. he's also trying to tackle significant financial challenges. sfusd released a statement saying they are committed to working with wayne to get the system back on track. union officials say whatever the plan is should not include school closures. >> i think that the community sentiments are very much so. the same of how he's prioritizing closing schools or the plan to close schools, rather than cutting from the top and then filling the positions that still need to be filled. it's asinine. >> wayne did not attend today's meeting. the school board will meet again on tuesday. congressional leaders have struck a deal for a short term spending bill that will avert a

possible partial government shutdown, at least for now. that bill will fund federal agencies for about three months when the new budget year begins on october first. lawmakers have struggled to get to this point as the current budget year winds to a close. the short term deal gives the current congress the ability to put together a full year spending bill after the election, rather than push that responsibility to the next congress and president. all right, shifting gears, we do want to get to the accuweather forecast details on a heat advisory. spencer it is going to feel like summer pretty soon. >> it started already. dion. feeling like summer. feeling like summer in some spots today. that heat is going to increase over the next couple of days. despite the fact that we are now in the first day of fall. so let me give you a look at current temperatures before i show you the heat advisory. we have temperature readings right now up to and above 90 degrees in the warmest inland locations and around the bay shoreline, upper 70s to about 80. and here's our heat advisory. now, this will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow

to 8 p.m. tuesday for the east bay hills and the east bay valleys. 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 to 8 p.m. tomorrow for the santa cruz mountains, to santa clara valley and the eastern santa clara hills and under these conditions, of course, there's an increased risk of heat related illness. so we are advised to drink lots of fluids of course, stay hydrated and avoid over exposure to the heat. but look at tomorrow's projected highs up to and perhaps even above 100 degrees in the warmest inland spots tomorrow. in the low 90s around the bay shoreline, we'll see 75 to about 80 degrees on the coast tomorrow. tuesday, not much different, maybe two degrees less hot instead of a lot of 100 to 101 degree readings inland, we'll have 97, 98, 99 degrees. so this is a two day heat spike. and that heat advisory should be taken seriously. i'll show you when we can expect some cooler, more fall like weather a little bit later. dion. >> all right. sounds good. spencer. thanks. tomorrow we may learn more details about friday night's deadly shooting at vta shibuya yard in south san jose.

a vta bus driver was killed and the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating it as a homicide. authorities say it appears to be an isolated incident. a motive is unclear and no arrests have been made. the transit agency has increased security at the bus yard and all other vta facilities. for many employees, the incident has triggered many emotions. you'll remember in may of 2021, nine people were killed by a lone gunman in the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history. the gunman, vta employee sam cassidy, killed himself as deputies arrived on the scene in the south bay. wildlife officials are investigating the mysterious deaths of at least a dozen ducks at a milpitas park, according to the chronicle. people found 12 to 14 dead ducks in a pond at half memorial park last tuesday. officials are trying to determine if the birds had avianlu or perhaps ingested something toxic. they say no additional dead ducks have been found since tuesday.

the oakland a's have just one more series and three more games remaining at the coliseum. more than 24,000 fans packed today's game against the yankees. many wanted to have one last tailgate and see one last game at the stadium before the athletics relocate to sacramento ahead of their planned move to vegas. the a's have called the coliseum home for the past 57 years, and it was an emotional day for lifelong fans. >> came here with my grandfather, who's now passed away. my dad who's here, my now, my kids are here. fourth generation a's fans, and it's just sad to see what's happened to the team. ever since a certain owner has bought the team 20 something years ago, and that this is these, these kids. it's all about these kids playing in the parking lot right now and experiences that they'll never have that i had growing u. >> the final a's game at the coliseum isrsday against the rangers, and it is already sold out. chris alvarez joins us with

design of the valencia street bikeway project. the center bike lane has been blamed for hurting businesses along valencia. officials have been coordinating with those business owners, about two dozen of them on a bike lane realignment. the lane could be placed closer to the curb or on the outside of business. parklets. a second meeting will be held on wednesday. check this out. fans lined up today at the apple store in san francisco's union square. it's the first weekend of sales for apple's new line of products, including the iphone. demand for the iphone, though, has been tepid. some analysts

san francisco bay area. five k in san mateo. people took part, including abc seven's own tara campbell. organizers say lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the state. the event raises money for research and cures that help change the disease from one of stigma to one of hope. what a nice turnout. >> nice cause. and a nice day for a walk. run. but tomorrow may not be. >> oh, i know, and of course it happens on the first day of fall. exactly. >> fall arrived this morning at 543, and it brought with it a little heat spike which will make it feel like summer. we

have a heat advisory that will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. tuesday for the east bay hills and the east bay inland valleys. and then from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. tomorrow for the santa cruz mountains, the santa clara valley and the east santa clara hills. temperatures will range from 90 to about 100 in the hottest spots. and of course, there's the risk of heat related illness. now, we had a return of the marine layer this morning, pushing up against the coastline and producing a little bit of local drizzle, but it didn't keep the temperatures from rising. we have a brisk but light winds right now near the coastline up to about 18 20mph. and notice it is warmer just about everywhere than it was at this time yesterday. the exception, the exceptions being san francisco and half moon bay. so here's a little patch of fog pushing out over san francisco right now. as you can see from sutro tower, 61 degrees here in the city, right now, 69 in oakland. we've got mid 70s in hayward and redwood city, 83 at san jose, 55 at half moon bay. and here's an actual finger of fog, more like an arm of fog.

now that it's pushed through the golden gate out over the bay. 82 right now in santa rosa, petaluma, 6875 at napa, 86 concord and low 90s at fairfield and livermore. so it's warming up. and many people, well, quite a few are taking advantage of the beach right now down in santa cruz. these are the forecast headlines tomorrow and tuesday. we'll have summer-like heat the middle of the week will bring cooler, more fall like weather and then going into the weekend we'll see temperatures rebound just a bit. so look for the fog to expand tonight. locally out over the bay and of course along the coastline. and they'll be patchy drizzle near the coast taking us into the early morning hours overnight. low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 50s and then highs tomorrow. low 70s near the bay. upper 80s to near 90 around low 70s near the coast. i beg your pardon. upper 80s to about 90 around the bay shoreline and up to 100 degrees in the hottest inland spots. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast as you can see, we have two very hot days coming our way and our inland areas, but a nice cooldown by 15 degrees or more
