summer-like heat. i'll have the accuweather forecast always live abc seven news starts right now >> making their demands known, hotel workers at some of san francisco's busiest hotels are now on strike. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. more than a thousand hotel workers in san francisco hit the picket line today. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at their demands and the broader impact of the strike on. >> more than 1500 san francisco hotel workers off the job and on the picket line sunday. one day later, cooks, servers, bellhops, housekeepers and more are striking at three hotels the grand hyatt, westin saint francis and the hilton union square, demanding a new contract. >> we've been bargaining for months now. we're very far apart on our really key issues like our health care, our wages, our

pension. >> michelle brown gordon is a hotel phone operator. she's hoping to retire soon. >> the contract the hyatt is offering is garbage. i am 64 years old. i'll be 65 in 6 months. can't retire without a good contract. >> we need to pay our bills or mortgage. pay the food, pay the gas. so everything is expensive. that's why we need to increase our wages. >> the strike following months of contract negotiations between union workers and the hotels. this is a continuation of the strike which happened over labor day weekend when thousands of hotel workers walked off the job in several u.s. cities, including san francisco and san jose. some hotel guests were surprised to see and hear a picket line out front. we weren't expecting this loud ruckus. >> the kids are like, it's too loud! >> the strike action comes at a challenging time for san francisco hotels and the tourism industry, still recovering from

the pandemic. >> san francisco is hurting right now, and this isn't helping. >> in response, hyatt said, we are disappointed that unite here local two has chosen to strike once again, while hyatt remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith. we have contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to strike activity and this from westin, owned by marriott, the westin saint francis remains open. we remain available to meet with the local union negotiating committee to reach an agreement that is fair to all parties. striking hotel workers say they are willing to be off the job as long as it takes. could be days. could be weeks. you're willing to be on the picket line for that long? >> that's right. i'm willing to be on the picket line until we win in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> mayor london breed is allocating $8.4 million to help the san francisco unified school district. it all comes after the district's board held a closed door emergency meeting this morning about the fate of superintendent matt wayne and

questions about his leadership. the school district is facing some huge challenges. last week, wayne delayed an announcement of possible school closures. he's also trying to tackle significant financial challenges. sfusd released a statement saying they are committed to working with wayne to get the system back on track. union officials say whether the plan is should not the plan should not include school closures. >> i think that the community sentiments are very much so. the same of how he's prioritizing closing schools or the plan to close schools, rather than cutting from the top and then filling the positions that still need to be filled. it's asinine. >> wayne did not attend today's meeting. the school board will meet once again on tuesday. some breaking news now. congressional leaders have struck a deal for a short term spending bill that will avert a possible partial government shutdown, at least for now. that bill will fund

federal agencies for about three months, when the new budget year begins october 1st. lawmakers have struggled to get to this point, as the current budget year winds to a close. the short term deal gives the current congress the ability to put together a full year spending bill after the election, rather than push that responsibility to the next congress and president. all right. we do want to get the accuweather forecast details now because we have a heat advisory in the forecast. spencer feeling like summer on this first day of autumn. >> you're right about that dion. it's quite warm out there. some summer fall arrive this morning at 5:43 a.m, but it has been a summer like day. here's our our heat advisory. it will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. tuesday for the east bay hills and the east bay inland valleys. uh- 8:11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. tomorrow evening for the santa clara valleys. the santa clara east eastern hills and the santa cruz mountains. so this means that there's an increased chance of heat related illness from overexposure to the

heat. we should remain hydrated, drink lots of fluids, and avoid overexposure to the heat. now, as you look at current temperatures here, you can see it's pretty warm, although not very hot at the moment. we've already reached our peak of heating, but tomorrow we'll have a peak of heating that takes high temperatures inland up to and even above 100 degrees in the hottest spots inland and up to and above 90 degrees around the bay shoreline. that's very hot for an autumn day, and about the same range of highs on tuesday before we get some mid-week cooling. i'll have more details on that and the accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes. >> dion all right. sounds good. spencer. thanks. tomorrow we may learn more details about friday night's deadly shooting at vta shibuya yard in south san jose. a vta bus driver was killed, and the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating it as a homicide. authorities say it appears to be an isolated incident, though the motive is unclear and no arrests have been made. the transit agency has increased security at the bus yard, and all other vta facilities. for many employees, this incident has triggered many

emotions. you'll remember in may of 2021, nine people were killed by a lone gunman in the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history. the gunman, vta employee sam cassidy, killed himself as deputies arrived on the scene. a hit job, according to investigators, led to a mass shooting in birmingham, alabama, that killed four people and injured seven others. the search is now on for the gunman. investigators say last night, several people got out of a car and fired shots on a crowd before driving away. all of this happened in the city's entertainment district. the police chief says officers believe it's a murder for hire crime targeting someone in the area. birmingham's mayor says gun violence has gotten out of control. >> there's a certain element in this city who are too comfortable riding around with semi-automatic weapons, automatic weapons, convergent switches and everything else whose only intent, hell bent intent, is to harm people, shoot

people, kill people. >> birmingham's mayor wants new laws to give officers the tools to get guns off the streets. to the south bay now, where wildlife officials are investigating the mysterious deaths of at least a dozen ducks at a milpitas park. according to the chronicle, people found 12 to 14 dead ducks in a pond at half memorial park last tuesday. officials are trying to determine if those birds had avian flu or perhaps ingested something toxic. they say no additional dead ducks have been found since tuesday. well, the oakland a's have just one more series and three more games to go at the coliseum. more than 24,000 fans packed today's game against the yankees. many wanted to have one last tailgate and see one last game at the stadium before the athletics relocate to sacramento ahead of their planned move to las vegas. the a's have called the coliseum home for the past 57 years, and

it was an emotional day for lifelong fans. >> i came here with my grandfather, who's now passed away, my dad, who's here, my now, my kids are here. fourth generation a's fans. and it's just sad to see what's happened to the team. ever since, a certain owner has bought the team 20 something years ago and that this is these, these kids. it's all about these kids playing in the parking lot right now and experiences that they'll never have that i had growing up. >> yeah, not the same memories. the final a's game at the coliseum is thursday against the rangers, and it is already sold out. chris will join us with highlights of this afternoon's game. a little later in sports. neighbors are getting their say about some of the most controversial bike lanes in the bay area. san francisco is thinking of ditching the valencia street center bike lane, and wants to know what you think about a new design. also lining up for the latest iphone. some reports, though, show slower than expected s

along valencia, and officials have been coordinating with those business owners. about two dozen of them on a bike lane realignment. the lane could be placed closer to the curb or on the outside of business. parklets. a second meeting will be held on wednesday. check this out. fans lined up today at the apple store in san francisco's union square. it's the first weekend of sales for apple's new line of products, including the iphone. demand for the phone has been tepid. some analysts say it's because it doesn't yet have artificial intelligence features. apple intelligence will become available when the next operating system launches in october was green day hanging outside a 7-eleven today in the east bay? >> i did not expect all these people to be out here right now. so this is incredible. so still ahead, celebrating the power of music and honoring some local punk superstars and taking a

in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders. california already has a ban on those thin plastic shopping bags at supermarkets and other stores, but consumers can purchase thicker plastic, reusable, recyclable bags. the new law bans all plastic shopping bags starting in 2026,

so shoppers who don't bring their own bags will only have their choice of a paper bag. i've really got to be better about carrying those reusable ones in the car. same here. >> i always forget they're in the pantry, and then i end up having to buy a bag. >> yeah. >> yeah. i also like the ones that are insulated. they keep cold things cold. >> you're going to need that. >> you're right. it's not going to be cold for a while. we have a heat advisory that will be in effect from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. tuesday for the east bay hills and east bay inland valleys, and 11 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. tomorrow night for the santa cruz mountains to santa clara valley in the eastern santa clara hills. we'll have high temperatures ranging from 95 to over 100 degrees. obviously overexposure to that, to that kind of heat can increase the likeness. the chance of heat related illnesse. excuse me. so we've got an onshore flow right now, as evidenced by the marine layer we had this morning. it will redevelop tonight. right now we have gentle breezes blowing onshore about 15 to 20 mile per hour winds. and it's a few degrees warmer right now in most bay area locations than at this

time last night, except san francisco and half moon bay, which are 2 to 3 degrees cooler. we see the low clouds beginning to push out over san francisco right now, 58 degrees here in the city, 65 in oakland, hayward 71 8-80 san jose, 72. in redwood city and 55 at half moon bay. and there's another view from mount tam of that low cloud, that one long finger of fog pushing out there, 73 degrees right now in santa rosa, 63 petaluma, napa, also 73. and we have mid to upper 80s at fairfield, concord and livermore. our warmest locations at the moment. and it was warm enough today that a few people showed up at santa cruz beach. these are our forecast headlines. tomorrow and tuesday we'll have summerlike heat across the bay area. middle of the week will bring us cooler, more fall like weather. and then into the weekend we'll see temperatures rebound a little bit. so for tonight look for the marine layer to expand and push locally across the bay. locally inland they'll be patchy drizzle along the coast and some may fall on land areas as well. so that will be the picture early tomorrow morning. but of course the fog will burn away, giving way to sunny skies in the

afternoon. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper seconds. high temperatures tomorrow 70 one half moon bay 79, san francisco 87, oakland 88 san mateo and of course inland areas. upper 90s to about 100. in places like fairfield and livermore. then on monday, even warmer, although tomorrow is monday. so i just repeated this to show you what the high temperature trend is on tuesday. it will be very much like tomorrow with high temperatures in places that were will be 100 tomorrow. 9899 on tuesday. so not much change there. the big change comes on wednesday when our cooler pattern develops. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and as we get to midweek a nice little cool down from those upper 90s to near 100. we'll have mainly mid to upper 80s on wednesday and thursday. and then we'll see a few more 90s popping up inland on friday and saturday. but no more heat wave for a while. >> it is only week three, but it was a battle of the walking wounded in l.a. today. niners without three of their top offensive stars christian mccaffrey, deebo samuel and

george kittle. while the rams had two of their top receivers missing. so who would step up today at sofi for niners? bumping the beats running out of the tunnel at what's affectionately known as levi south. niners looking for their sixth straight win in that stadium opening possession or in la. excuse me. brock purdy to jauan. jennings capped the eight play, 70 yard drive, 740 niners late first, same score. step it up. it's brock purdy to jauan jennings again. his second touchdown of the game 14 nothing drive took nearly eight minutes off the clock. they led 14 seven at the break early third same score another long drive capped by purdy to jennings 31 yards, their third touchdown of the day. he only had two regular season touchdowns in the last two years. he had three today. levi south going nuts. game of his life for jauan jennings. amazing. how did he catch this 32 yard catch through the defender. career highs 175 yards. all three of the niners touchdowns. but they settle for a field goal on that drive. just under three minutes. now niners up seven looking to push the lead out. and jake moody wide

left. the only missed of the day gives the rams life. and then very next play the momentum all the way for l.a. stafford air it out to tutu atwell. big play. they would end up scoring a touchdown. so the game is tied. and now the niners forced to punt here with about under a minute to go. it's xavier smith on the return 38 yards up the sideline. he doesn't score but puts the rams right in business. and then it's rookie josh cardy from stanford with two seconds to go. game winner right there. the niners led the whole way until the very end. and the rams win 2724. it's a brutal loss. the niners are one and two. >> it was unacceptable. we can't do that. we can't beat ourselves can't make those type of mistakes again. all three phases got to play better. we'll look at the tape fix it and move on. >> you know obviously it's early in the season but still like every game matters, and so, you know, we'rst going to take it one day at a time and not freak out about anything, but at

tonight at 11. well, finally. now one of the biggest rock bands to come out of the bay area is back in familiar territory today. members of green day are in pinole, their home town, for a special occasion. they received the key to the city today in a ceremony held outside a 7-eleven right across the street from pinole valley high school. it's the same location the band sings about in several of their songs. today's ceremony is also a celebration of their 30th anniversary of the release of the band's breakout album, dookie. >> well, i guess we spent a lot of time in class and ditching class across the street. we both came together because there were so many great bands that were from pinole. >> i love that paying tribute to where it began. the band members also took time to sign a mural dedicated to them outside of the store. they're also doing business now with 7-eleven. the store now carries punk bunny coffee, green day's own coffee company. these celebrities make
