live a vta worker arrested, accused of shooting and killing a coworker today. investigators are expected to give us more details about what happened at one of the transit agency's facilities friday night. >> a side show crackdown is on the table in san francisco. how the city may try to stop sideshows before they start. the proposal heading for a big vote this week. >> san francisco is hurting right now, and this isn't helping hotel guests telling us it's horrible timing for a city on the rebound. >> workers at some of the biggest hotels in the city are on strike this morning. what they want before going back to

the job. good morning. it's monday, september 23rd. >> let's turn to drew for a look at the weather. it was a beautiful weekend. gorgeous. >> so today it's even warmer. we have heat advisories that will kick in by about 11 a.m. for parts of the bay area, where those areas shaded in orange the santa cruz mountains, the south bay, the inland east bay. these are the areas that will find some of the warmest temperatures today. so this heat advisory will start at 11 a.m. for areas inland. it will continue through tomorrow evening. so it's pretty clear out there. a live look from our sutro tower camera showing you we have mainly clear skies. just some patchy fog along the coast right now in the north bay we have a wide range of temperatures in our valleys. we're in the 40s, so it's chilly, but you go up in the hills and we have temperatures right now in the 70s. so warm air is up above that will slowly descend down to the surface throughout the day and warm us up. so inland. forecast lots of sunshine today. the heat advisory is in effect. these temperatures will go into the low and mid 90s for daytime highs. it will be warm around the bay shoreline. even though today is the first full day of fall. we have temperatures that

are more summer like mid and upper 80s around the bay shoreline, lots of sunshine. the immediate coastline will get sunny skies this afternoon. those temperatures will be mild upper 60s to the lower 70s. let's check in with frances. see those drive times this morning? >> all right drew we're going to start off with a look at traffic coming off the bay bridge. there was some road work that just cleared within the last few minutes. so it's a much better ride for folks heading into san francisco. road work has been cleared. you can see no delays there for those taillights coming off the bay bridge, and it's very light heading to the lower deck of the bay bridge. here's a live shot in san jose. problem free right now as headlights move northbound on 101, it's looking good all the way up the peninsula into san francisco. overall traffic maps. basically, you'll see the usual slowdown out of tracy as you make your way on westbound 580 to the altamont pass and into livermore. elsewhere, it is green, but that westbound 580 stretch drive time from tracy to dublin is read at 46 minutes. reggie. >> thank you. francis, you're not going to be hearing the

question paper or plastic for very much longer. a new law will ban plastic bags at grocery stores starting in 2026. if it sounds like deja vu, it's because we have sort of been here before. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live with the details. so, gloria. governor newsom signed the nation's first plastic bag ban in 2007, when he was the mayor of san francisco. the rest of the state followed in 2014. we're back there again, only with a big difference. >> yeah, there is a big difference because right now, reggie, you know, we have the option of buying a plastic bag at a store when we buy something. but starting in 2026 will only be asked if we want a paper bag. so that is the big difference. governor gavin newsom signed that bill into law yesterday, which bans all plastic shopping bags. thin plastic shopping bags were banned in california, but shoppers could still buy those bags made with a thicker plastic considered to be reusable. bill supporters say the ban did not reduce waste, though. instead the amount of plastic shopping

bags, trash per person grew from 2004 to 2021, and now they hope this ban will meet the original intent of that original ban. but the companies that make these plastic bags oppose this. the american recycling plastic bag alliance, telling the l.a. times that the group was disappointed the governor signed the bill. in the past, saying that bans for stores and shoppers to switch to other products that are more expensive, adding that increased costs will be passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. and these paper bags will cost about a dime. they do have to be made of mostly recyclable material. live in millbrae gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> all right, gloria, thank you. today, santa clara county sheriff's investigators are expected to give new details about the killing of a south bay bus driver. he was shot to death friday night at vta shibuya yard in san jose. yesterday, another vta worker, a 33 year old man,

was arrested. investigators say the victim and suspect worked together, but officials are still trying to figure out the motive. now this shooting comes just three years after a mass shooting at vta's guadalupe division facility left nine people dead. the shooting in may 2021 is the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history. we'll also learn more today about a police shooting near the powell street bart station in san francisco. that happened earlier this month. police will hold a town hall meeting this afternoon. the shooting happened september 13th. at the time, officers said they confronted a man with a gun who was inside a vehicle that had been reported stolen. the man took off and officers chased him down. that's when shots were fired. this is what police chief bill scott said during a news conference after the shooting. >> again, you know, this city is we're on the upswing. we want to make sure that, you know, we try to prevent these types of things from happening, but our officers are deployed to prevent crime. and when we see somebody armed with a gun, you know, we want to

get that person in custody before they hurt somebody or commit some other violent crime with that firearm. >> the person shot by officers had non-life threatening injuries. today's town hall is virtual. it streams starting at 3 p.m. on sfgov tv's youtube page. >> in the east bay, antioch's mayor is asking for more law enforcement resources to tackle what he's calling an unprecedented level of gun violence. police are investigating nearly a dozen shootings in about three weeks. along the sycamore corridor north of highway four. the most recent shooting happened just friday night. it ended with an 18 year old dead. police believe the shootings in the area may be related. in a video posted this weekend, mayor lamar hernandez thorpe said the violence is being investigated as gang retaliation. he's calling on the contra costa county district attorney's office to launch a task force to address gang violence. the mayor is also repeating his call for governor gavin newsom to deploy the chp to help police, just like they

are in oakland. the mayor says if the violence doesn't end, he'd consider a curfew or road closures. police have already added extra patrols in the area in the north bay. >> another suspected arsonist has been arrested. a 61 year old man is accused of setting four small fires at southwest community park. this is next to meadowview elementary school. none of the fires damaged buildings, but students at the school had to shelter in place because of the heavy smoke. that arrest comes just one day after a cal firefighter or cal fire firefighter. firefighter, excuse me, was arrested. he was accused of starting five fires in the north bay this summer. investigators say he started the fires while off duty. none of them burned more than an acre. a discarded cigarette is to blame for a fire that damaged a building in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. firefighters say the cigarette ignited materials on the roof. they believe it came from the seneca hotel next door. it's a supportive housing site for formerly unhoused adults at

sixth street and stevenson. tena were evacuated as crews put out the fire. fortunately, no one was displaced by the damage. >> san francisco is promising to crack down on dangerous driving this week. mayor london breeds plan to fight sideshows goes up for a vote. the mayor wants the city to use drones, surveillance cameras and license plate readers to help catch the people involved. will hold their first vote on the plan, which would make it illegal to promote sideshows or set them up. >> workers at some of san francisco's busiest hotels walked off the job this weekend, hitting the picket lines to protest their wages and their workloads. it follows a massive labor day weekend strike. and abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at their demands and the broader impact

on what it more than 1500 san francisco hotel workers off the job and on the picket line. >> sunday, one day longer cooks, servers, bellhops, housekeepers and more are striking at three hotels the grand hyatt, westin saint francis and the hilton union square, demanding a new contract. >> we've been bargaining for months now. we're very far apart on our really key issues like our health care, our wages, our pension. >> michelle brown gordon is a hotel phone operator. she's hoping to retire soon. >> the contract the hyatt is offering is garbage. i am 64 years old. i'll be 65 in 6 months. can't retire without a good contract. >> we need to pay our bill or mortgage. pay the food, pay the gas. so everything is expensive. that's why we need to increase our wages. >> the strike following months of contract negotiations between

union workers and the hotels. this is a continuation of the strike which happened over labor day weekend when thousands of hotel workers walked off the job in several u.s. cities, including san francisco and san jose. some hotel guests were surprised to see and hear a picket line out front. we weren't expecting this loud ruckus. >> the kids are like, it's too loud! >> the strike action comes at a challenging time for san francisco hotels, and the tourism industry, still recovering from the pandemic. >> san francisco is hurting right now, and this isn't helping. >> in response, hyatt said, we are disappointed that unite here local two has chosen to strike once again. while hyatt remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith, we have contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to strike activity. and this from westin, owned by marriott, the westin saint francis remains open. we remain available to meet with a local union negotiating committee to reach an agreement that is fair to all parties. striking hotel workers say they

are willing to be off the job as long as it takes. could be days, could be weeks. you're willing to be on the picket line for that long? >> that's right. i'm willing to be on the picket line until we win in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> thanks, cornell. 510 this morning. and it's all about a warm afternoon. on the way, we have heat advisories that are posted for today and tomorrow. so this morning, what you'll find is a lot of sunshine. once that sun is up here close to 7 a.m. and temperatures do warm a bit faster today compared to much of last week. already into the 70s and a lot of areas away from the coast by about 10 a.m. so look at the forecast highs today. it's going to feel warm if not hot out there. 80 in san francisco. that's downtown, close to the ocean in the city. let's say the outer sunset, the outer richmond. it's close to the upper 60s, lower 70s, but still nice out there. oakland warm at 87 today. heat advisories in effect for the south bay, the inland east bay, mid and upper 90s from san jose to walnut creek. so looking at the next ten days, this is livermore, for example. typical

is wedged in a small gap. you see him there? this is between a garage and a house on hemlock street. >> i grab this, grab this real pull. there you go, buddy. >> pull pull pull pull pull! >> yikes. the oakland firefighters union shared this video with us. the rescue took nearly four hours. the crew was able to turn the gear right side up. then, with a rope tied around its legs. as you saw there, they were able to free the animal from the small space. >> this morning, a portion of i-680 in the east bay has reopened after a weekend of extensive road work. this was the scene of acosta boulevard in san ramon to i-580 and

pleasanton since friday night. all of i-580 and 680 connectors remain open along the right lane, as well as the northbound side of 680. caltrans finished up road work and reopen the lanes about an hour ago. >> dozens of unhoused people have started to move into san francisco's new mission cabins. we first told you about the new 60 cabins in the city's mission district back in april. the cabins are a new type of emergency shelter, offering privacy for people who are unhoused. the 65 square foot rooms include a twin bed with a locked door, and they are pet friendly. advocates say this temporary solution is a way to get in front of the city's enforcement on encampments. >> as you can see, this is a very clean place. it's a very stable place. it seems very safe. it's not a nuisance to the neighborhood by any means. and so, yeah, i'm a huge advocate for this sort of housing. >> the cabins will be up for two years until the city breaks ground on more permanent affordable housing. so far, san

francisco has added 1800 emergency shelter beds. >> now, to what could be a new era of entertainment in san francisco. over the weekend, the night market moved to the beach. it's an effort to change how people see the city and to help build a better bay area. here's abc seven news reporter tara campbell. >> the party is on and people are showing up, taking to san francisco's great highway for the inaugural taraval night market by the beach. building off the immense popularity of the sunset night market, we went to the one on irving, a couple weeks ago, and i found out about this one. >> and so i thought it would be just as fun to bring the kids. >> the event is largely driven by district four supervisor joel engardio, who spoke about it earlier this week. >> the original sunset night market and irving street is a huge success. we just had 20,000 people show up at the most recent one, but we want to move this night market, expand the concept so other areas of the sunset can benefit. >> awesome, awesome because it keeps the momentum going and,

you know, keeps the vibe. so to say, going. and it creates like i said, you know, more opportunities on this side of the city. >> mayor london breed taking to the stage saturday in support. so are you all having a good time tonight? and from the beach party vibe to the vendors creates opportunities for us to come out to the community and you know, produce income for ourselves, for our families and friends. and the community is responding. >> i love it because we have all kinds of vendors. we're supporting our local communities and we're supporting and, you know, getting together with just kid friendly families. and it's fun. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> one of the biggest rock bands to come out of the bay area was back in familiar territory. members of green day returned to pinole for a very special occasion yesterday. they received the key to the city in a ceremony held outside a 7-eleven right across the street from pinole valley high school. it's the same location the band

sings about in several of their songs. the ceremony also served as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of the band's breakout album, dookie. >> well, i guess we spent a lot of time in class and ditching class across the street. >> we both came together because there were so many great bands that were from pinole. >> the band members also took time to sign a mural dedicated to them outside the store. getting back to your old stomping grounds. something special about it? >> yeah, that's really cool. i'm glad that they actually do stuff when they come back home, you know, like get involved with the community, see people. yeah. >> and in front of 7-eleven. yeah. that's such a high school thing. >> get me a slurpee. >> yeah. >> you know coke. only rite coke. >> drew knows my order. >> yes. that'll be yummy today. >> oh, yeah. it's perfect. yeah. i mean, even the beach is going to be nice. the coast is going to stay relatively comfortable and away from the coast. we have

some hot weather sticking around for a couple of days, so here's a live look from our sutro tower camera showing you no fog from this vantage point. just some patchy cloud cover right now along the coast. we will find today and tomorrow sunshine. a heat advisory is in effect. temperatures well into the 90s in our hottest spots inland today. now the middle of the week, we have a sharply cooler looking forecast for one day. wednesday will feel like fall around here, but don't get used to it because as we head into the weekend, we're warming right back up. so here's the heat advisory. starting at 11 a.m. today for the inland east bay, the south bay, the santa cruz mountains where temperatures will be well above average. it's going to be pretty warm in the north bay as well, but no heat advisories there. some patchy fog along the coast. half moon bay coming in at three miles of visibility. so here's the forecast today into the 90s. we go inland. we'll go into the 80s around the bay shoreline even along the coast. will flirt with 70 later on today. so highs in our microclimates starting in the south bay. look at those numbers. 94 in san jose up along the peninsula, 92 redwood city,

but 70 for pacifica. a wide range across the city today. upper 60s for the outer richmond and sunset. but 80s downtown and for south san francisco in the north bay. it is hot 94, in san rafael, 98 in cloverdale, 93 in napa, in the east bay today, 87 in oakland, but 94 in orinda, 91 in fremont and then inland. we have moderate to major heat risk today. look at those temperatures. 98 walnut creek 100 in brentwood overnight tonight stays relatively mild 50s and 60s heading into tuesday. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast heat advisory today. that heat is going to linger tomorrow. and then we're sharply cooler for one day here on wednesday. but those temperatures are right back into the 90s. by friday and saturday. so the big theme the next couple of days, warm weather sticking around for the next week or so guys. >> all right drew thank you. coming up the seven things to know this morning. >> we're witnessing the final days of the a's at the coliseum. how fans in oakland

90s around the bay shoreline inland, getting to about 100 degrees in our hottest cities this afternoon. >> number two, a vta employee has been arrested, accused of shooting and killing his coworker. the shooting happened friday night at the sheboygan yard in san jose. the suspect was arrested yesterday near his home. >> number three san francisco mayor london breed is sending a team of city officials and new funding to help stabilize the city's school district. it comes as the district faces a financial crisis and looming school closures. the school board held an emergency meeting yesterday and will meet again tomorrow. >> number four workers at some of san francisco's busiest hotels are on strike for better health care. pay and fair workloads, among other things. hotels remain open. >> number five. no more paper or plastic at grocery stores in california. governor newsom just signed a bill banning all types of plastic shopping bags starting in 2026. if you don't take your own bag, stores will only be able to offer you a paper bag and they're going to

all that sunshine. the heat advisory will begin at 11 a.m. later on this afternoon. mid and upper 90s, a few spots hitting 100 this afternoon around the bay shoreline. shorts and t shirts. going to be your best accessories today to stay cool because we're finding sunshine getting us well into the 80s. upper 80s around the bay shoreline along the coast. not quite as hot, but still warm for this time of the year. look at that. hitting the low 70s with sunny skies this afternoon. let's check in with frances. see those drive times? >> all right. one of the slow surprise drive times is across the bay bridge. this morning. there was some emergency road work on the upper deck. getting off the upper deck into san francisco. looks like it has been cleared, but traffic is very heavy from treasure island into san francisco. so as we check out that drive time, that middle bar there, westbound 80 emeryville to san francisco is 16 minutes. it's also slow getting to the maze on westbound 80 for the top bar, highway four to the maze of 17 minutes, and then also just be extra careful for folks coming in from the north bay. look at how thick the fog is across the golden gate

bridge. but no major problems in the north bay. amanda. all right. >> thanks, francis. your voice. your vote. six weeks to go until election day. and two new polls show vice president harris is leading former president donald trump nationwide. this weekend. vp harris held a record breaking campaign event as mr. trump hit the battleground state of north carolina, where a major shakeup is unfolding. the question is, will it affect his chances of winning there? here's abc news reporter perry russom. >> you may have fallout for the republican candidate for governor in north carolina. several top staffers and mark robinson's campaign quitting after a cnn report claims he made racist and inflammatory comments on a site, including calling himself a black nazi and expressing support for reinstating slavery. abc news has not independently confirmed the report. robinson denies making the comments. oh, what a crowd this is. former president trump in north carolina. this weekend not mentioning robinson by name. trump previously endorsed robinson, describing him as martin luther king on

concerns with chemicals previously found safe. the issue has prompted several states, including california, to create their own laws banning certain additives after the fda failed to act. >> california is taking another big step towards reducing plastic waste. this time by eliminating plastic bags at grocery stores for good. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live outside a store in millbrae, and gloria, the new law takes effect in 2026. >> yes, and the reaction is mixed. advocates are applauding the governor's signing of the bill, which would ban all plastic bags. one group says that these plastic bags that are currently in use, those thicker ones, are rarely reused and that they're almost impossible to recycle. the california public interest research group adds by eliminating all plastic bags as an option at checkout. proponents argue that the new law finally meets the intent of
