attempt on donald trump. he's been held without bail and already faces gun charges in connection with his arrest. this month at trump's golf course. >> we are now on hurricane watch as a new storm system moves toward the gulf of mexico, and it could become tropical storm helene later today before intensifying and possibly hitting florida's gulf coast thursday as a category three hurricane. the warm water in the gulf could fuel the storm. 41 counties in florida are under states of emergency. we will check the full forecast in just moments. >> now to the middle east and concern about a potential israeli ground invasion in lebanon after airstrikes that reportedly left nearly 500 people dead. this morning, the u.s. is deploying more troops to the middle east as tensions rise between israel and hezbollah militants in lebanon. pentagon officials declined to say exactly how many troops are being sent, but call it a small number. >> we already have 40,000 u.s. troops in the region, including a carrier strike group at sea. but there is concern that this conflict could spiral out of

control, leaving tens of thousands of americans needing evacuation and these additional troops could help with that. >> yesterday, israeli forces targeted 1600 sites in lebanon, killing nearly 500 people, according to lebanese officials. they say the victims included women and children, with more than 1600 people wounded. dash camera video captured the moment one rocket exploded. it's not clear if the driver survived. traffic jammed with people fleeing to beirut, hoping to find safety, only to find israel launching strikes there as well. israel accuses hezbollah of storing weapons in civilian homes. prime minister benjamin netanyahu telling the people of lebanon, israel is not at war with them, but with hezbollah. >> the idf has warned you to get out of harm's way. i urge you, take this warning seriously. >> hezbollah set off multiple counterattacks this morning, claiming to target military sites in northern israel after

launching hundreds of rockets yesterday, some reaching israel's third largest city, haifa. world leaders, meanwhile, are meeting for the u.n. general assembly. the white house says secretary of state antony blinken is looking to find a, quote, off ramp for the escalating conflict. and neither side is calling the escalation a war. but former cia chief leon panetta says the situation has crossed a threshold. >> the union has rejected boeing's new offer to machinists on strike. the company says a 30% pay raise over four years is its best, and final offer. but the union says the offer misses the mark. the strike is now on day 11 and is costing an estimated $50 million per day. >> the faa says it's taking a big step to address the shortage of air traffic controllers. the agency says it's now exceeding hiring goals for the year. it was short about 3000 controllers in the spring, a problem that has been linked to delays and more close calls on airport runways. >> now to a rare death penalty

case in missouri. in this case, prosecutors and even the victim's family are pushing for clemency. but now clemency has been denied and time is running out for marcellus williams. a missouri man is set to be executed today after losing his appeal. clemency. marcellus williams was convicted of fatally stabbing lisa gale during a burglary in 1998, a crime he insists he did not commit. prosecutors and even the victim's family have been pushing to vacate the conviction. they point to dna testing on the murder weapon done long after williams's conviction. that does not match williams. it revealed the knife had been mishandled by investigators. they say there's no physical evidence linking him to the crime scene. and williams's attorneys argue prosecutors excluded a juror based on racial bias. juror number 64 should have been an ideal juror, except for the fact

that, according to the trial prosecutor, he was a young black man with glasses. >> that is unacceptable. under the constitution. >> but the state's highest court ruled yesterday. williams's attorneys failed to prove his innocence and denied there was any juror irregularities. other evidence from the case includes the victim's purse and laptop being found in williams's vehicle, and witnesses, including a jailhouse informant testifying that williams confessed. the governor yesterday saying williams has exhausted due process and every judicial avenue. his lawyers are now appealing to the u.s. supreme court. williams's son says he's hoping for a miracle. >> this is wrong. you know, i believe my father is truly innocent and they need to take a closer look. >> williams supporters have vowed to deliver a petition with a million signatures to the missouri capitol today, calling for a stay of execution. >> time now for your tuesday weather.

victorious? >> this morning on gma, crews in south florida responded to this porsche hanging off a third story of a parking garage. >> the driver still inside. police say she hit the gas by mistake and rammed through a wall. the car was wedged between the garage and a tree. crews used ropes to bring her down. fortunately, she is expected to be okay. >> we, of course, are glad she's okay. now to south of boston. authorities have finally managed to catch a bull on the run. it was spotted last night backing up traffic on a road in north attleboro. the bull was among eight that escaped from a rodeo at a local mall sunday. the other seven were captured within hours. the escape is now under investigation. >> we turn now to a new legal battle over whether the plastic that we're recycling is really being recycled at all. >> it's time exxonmobil is held accountable. >> this morning, california is suing exxonmobil, claiming for nearly half a century the company has deceived the public about whether plastics are recyclable. the lawsuit claims exxon, which produces a key

component in single use plastics, pushed misleading claims that these materials could be easily recycled, leading to widespread environmental damage. >> tell people that it's their responsibility that they have the burden of recycling, and if there's plastic pollution, it's because they failed to recycle and it was all a sham. >> the suit claims exxon promoted the widely used chasing arrow recycling symbol, leading buyers to believe products with the symbol would be recycled if disposed of properly. but a study in 2022 found only about 5% of plastic waste in the u.s. is actually recycled, the rest being incinerated or sent to a landfill. >> you can have an item with chasing arrows, and it is completely not recyclable. it will end up being incinerated in the environment or in landfill. >> exxonmobil responding, saying for decades, california officials have known their recycling system isn't effective. they failed to act, and now they seek to blame others instead of suing us. they
