>> the high cost of losing weight is putting ozempic ceo in the hot seat. it's just one of many high profile hearings happening on capitol hill today. >> and an open letter to a's fans from the team owner, john fisher. it's not being well received online or by abc seven sports director larry beil. we'll tell you what it says. as the a's prepare for the final three home games in oakland. >> larry said, give me one second. let me rip this up. >> i can't rip it enough. good morning. >> it's tuesday, september 24th. yeah. >> let's begin, though, with a check of the weather. >> yeah, it was hot yesterday. i mean, we had temperatures well into the 90s. we'll keep that heat advisory going for one more afternoon. it's been trimmed back quite a bit. so yesterday the heat advisory did include the south bay, the santa cruz mountains. no longer included. it's mainly just the inland east bay, but the entire region once again is going to warm up above average later on this afternoon. it's mild out there right now. current temperature 62. in the city. near 70 in san rafael. hayward. this morning. so you

can see we're hanging on to some of that mild air this morning. and that will create a warm afternoon on the way. so take a look at the inland forecast. a few degrees cooler than yesterday but still a very hot day. that's why we still have the heat advisory in effect. lots of sunshine. we're back into the upper seconds for daytime highs. so again, take those precautions. stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, find frequent breaks to cool off around the bay shoreline. it's another warm afternoon. sunny skies throughout the day. temperatures back into the 80s. we'll see a bit of a cooler day though. along the coast yesterday. along the coast, we're in the 70s today. we will be in the 60s. if you're really craving fall like weather, tomorrow is your day will preview that coming up in eight minutes. let's say hi to francis for the drive times. >> all right. morning, drew. morning, everyone. unfortunately, it's going to be folks heading to the bay bridge and off the bay bridge. that's going to be the hot spot again this morning as we zoom in. there's some emergency road work going on in san francisco, so two lanes are blocked as you come off the upper deck of the bay bridge and head into the

city and check out this live shot. you see how traffic is backed up even for folks heading to that fifth street offramp. so this is supposed to be cleared at 6:00 this morning. hopefully it will be cleared a little bit earlier. and there's also some road work going on across the golden gate bridge in the northbound direction. looks like they're in the process of clearing that, but you can see it's not affecting traffic. looking good both directions and no fog at all right now. here's a drive time look. westbound 80. highway four to the maze. 19 minutes. but that heavy part. westbound 80. emeryville to san francisco is 24 minutes because of the slowdown. but southbound 101. looking good to sfo. amanda >> all right. >> thank you. happening tonight. students, parents and teachers are planning to rally at san francisco unified school district headquarters. this is in reaction to the crisis within the district. they want to stop pending school closures. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is here live. and gloria, tonight's meeting comes after the mayor assigned a team to help the troubled district. >> that's right. amanda. tonight, there is a board meeting, and students and parents are planning to speak during that meeting and also

rally before. they're asking that the district pause school closures. and this all comes as the mayor announced she's stepping in to help the school district to avoid a state takeover. the san francisco unified school district is facing a $400 million budget deficit over a three year period, as it discusses staffing cuts and school closures and the state is threatening to take over. on sunday, mayor london breeds office announced the creation of a team of top city leaders to help advise the district on ways to tackle the crisis. she's calling it the school stabilization team. the seven member team includes the executive director of the department of children, youth and their families. >> the school district is facing some serious financial challenges, and our plan is to go in and to make sure that by the end of this year that we help them with a balanced budget, that we help them make the right decisions based on facts. >> the announcement follows an emergency sunday meeting where

the district board of education spoke about terminating superintendent matt wayne. instead, they reached out to the mayor's office for help. last week, superintendent wayne was set to announce a list of school closures. that announcement was postponed. the district needs to provide a clear plan and a balanced budget to the state. by the end of the year. and some parents have been frustrated by all of this uncertainty. but one parent that abc seven talked to says that the newly announced team is giving her hope. tonight's school board meeting is at 630 in the evening at district headquarters, and parents are planning to start rallying an hour before that. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria. thank you. the latest bill signed by governor newsom, aims at limiting or flat out banning student cell phone use. it's called the phone free school act, and it requires school districts, charter schools and county education offices to come up with a plan by july of 2026 to limit or ban

cell phone use by students. a bipartisan group of lawmakers backed the bill. supporters say limiting cell phone use in class will help students, academics and mental health. four other bills signed by the governor aimed to crack down on sideshows. video of these dangerous and destructive events are, of course, nothing new to us in the bay area. sideshow took place over the took over, i should say, the bay bridge in april. as many as 100 cars blocked the lanes. the governor's office says the new law signed yesterday, quote, expand vehicle impoundment authority for law enforcement, including for spectators and those aiding in illegal speed contests and speed shows, while also standardizing terminology for sideshows and street takeovers statewide and targeting reckless driving activities on highways and parking lots. now, one of the new laws allows officers to remove cars that are blocking areas for sideshows without having to also make an arrest.

another law expands the ability to impound cars in sideshows that take place in parking lots, not just on highways. and another one expands the penalties for sideshows to include impounding cars for 30 days and requiring restitution for victims. a final law increases the penalties for both participants and organizers of sideshows that endanger children and cause property damage. >> i'm at the live desk tracking some high profile hearings happening today on capitol hill. first, a hearing to examine the high cost of weight loss medications in the u.s. the ceo of novo nordisk, which manufactures ozempic and wegovy, will appear before a senate committee. senator bernie sanders is accusing the ceo of, quote, ripping off americans with the high cost of weight loss drugs. a second hearing will focus on abortion care. this will examine how former president trump's overturning of roe v wade and subsequent state abortion bans have threatened to access to life saving medical care for women across the

country. this hearing will be the first time in history the senate finance committee convenes a hearing on the topic of women's reproductive health care. a third hearing will focus on the faa's oversight into boeing. the faa administrator is expected to appear before a house panel today to ensure boeing is building safe airplanes and revamping its safety management program. it comes after several scary incidents, including that door plug blowout in january. all three hearings start at 10:00 this morning, and in the next half hour, i'll dive into additional high profile hearings expected today. that's at 530. >> the vta employee accused of shooting and killing a coworker over the weekend is expected in court tomorrow to answer to charges in the case. this is the second deadly incident of gun violence at vta in just three years. 33 year old duck buie is accused of shooting and killing 45 year old reggie lewis. teotico. excuse me. seen here in this linkedin photo. the santa

clara county sheriff's office says the suspect knew the victim, and the two took part in many of the same activities outside of work. >> although this investigation is still ongoing, we believe the motive had to do with money owed between the two from their betting activities, which had nothing to do with their employment. >> teotico isn't the only vta employee killed on vta property in recent years. in 2021, a disgruntled vta mechanic shot and killed nine coworkers before he died by suicide. the sheriff's office is increasing security across vta, and the agency is offering grief counselors for employees. we're also learning more about a police shooting near the powell street bart station in san francisco earlier this month. san francisco police presented body cam video of the incident in a virtual town hall yesterday. officers say they confronted a man with a gun on september 13th. he was inside a car that had been reported stolen. they boxed in the car before instructing him to get out. police say he then took off

with a revolver, went into a liquor store on fifth and eddie streets and then hid behind the counter. he came back out and then they chased him down the street. police attempted to lasso his legs multiple times, but they say the man continued to try to get away. heading toward the transit station. officers chased him into the bart station. they fired after the suspect raised his arm, pointing the gun toward officers. >> the officers involved used time, distance, less lethal devices, and their training to attempt to arrest this individual without using force, but he refused all commands and continued to flee from them, ultimately ending in an officer involved shooting inside the powell street station. >> the suspect had non-life threatening injuries. it's unclear when he's going to appear in court. the da's office will also investigate the shooting. >> this afternoon, the a's begin their final home stand in oakland. they'll play at the coliseum three days in a row,

saying goodbye to the city they have called home for the better part of a century. a's fans are blasting team owner john fisher on social media. fisher shared a letter yesterday, finally addressing the team's departure and apologizing for it. he wrote in part, quote, i know there is great disappointment, even bitterness, though i wish i could speak to each one of you individually. i can tell you this from the heart. we tried staying in oakland was our goal. it was our mission, and we failed to achieve it. and for that, i am genuinely sorry. that's the end of the quote there and on abc seven news at four. yesterday, sports director larry beil shared his take on the apology. and larry didn't pull any punches. >> john, you're a serial penny pincher. you've destroyed your family's great name and legacy because of your cheapness. as for the statement about loyal a's fans, quote, i wish i could speak to each and every one of you individually. end quote. seriously. john, we've been trying to interview you for

leaders say boeing's so-called best and final offer isn't good enough and won't be voted on by the company's deadline at the end of this week. boeing's latest offer includes a 30% raise over the four year contract, and reinstates bonuses. it also renews a promise to build a new plane in the seattle area. if the project starts in the next four years. that's been a key sticking point for union leaders. boeing also increased 401 k contributions. union members want the company to bring back pensions. boeing mechanists have been on strike for 12 days now. >> you may see picketing in san francisco again today. 1500 hotel workers are on strike for a third day. workers are demanding better pay, affordable health care and improved working conditions from three large hotel chains. picketing is happening 24 hours a day outside

the westin saint francis and union square. other groups are in front of the grand hyatt nearby and more at the hilton. >> no other option at this point, so you're prepared to strike for days or weeks. that's right. we are. yeah. until until we win, we won't go back in until we win. >> i think they've been peaceful. it appears that they're very well organized. they're making their points without hassling anyone who's walking back and forth. >> abc7 news received statements from both hyatt and westin saying they are negotiating with striking workers. all the hotels remain open during the strike. >> thousands of people in san francisco are in for a huge water bill. it's due to a glitch with their meters. many haven't gotten a bill in months, and soon they'll have to make up for it. the city's public utilities commission says the meters for more than 8000 customers stopped sending out data, so the agency never charged them. some didn't get billed for more than a year. the city is going to tack all those months of charges onto

future bills. there are payment plans, so residents don't have to pay all at once. oakland mayor shengtao says the city is ramping up efforts to clear homeless encampments. tao says the city will move to shut down encampments that pose the most danger, or pose the most pressing public safety hazards. in a video announcement posted on social media yesterday, she introduced the bullet points of the new executive order. >> departments are directed to ticket, tow or remove to preserve access. if an encampment is creating fire hazards like blocking hydrants, burning fires within 30ft of structures, or illegally tapping into electrical wires. we must clear it. >> but mayor toms says the city will shut down sites with compassion, offering alternative housing to people who need a safe space to stay. >> a new real estate trend is emerging in the bay area, and it has quite a name younger homebuyers are using it as a way to get into the housing market. our media partners at the san

francisco standard report on the new hot friend compound. it's a new site dedicated to finding multi-family homes and properties that can be shared. we spoke with the founder of hot friend compounds on our 3 p.m. show. he says there's something for everyone like, you know, we talked to users who, you know, gold is they want to buy a duplex with their sister, and one lives in one unit, one lives in the other unit. >> we talked to groups of friends who all want to rent, like apartment units on the same floor of a building, and, you know, sort of support each other socially. we talked to people that want to, like, have two, two homes on the lot, and so we support all these. >> a 2023 zillow survey shows 14% of millennials have purchased property with friends, and 70% of gen zers say they'd be open to co buying. you know how how hot are the friends compound i think is that just for the name to get people interested? >> we just got to think you're hot and then you can buy a house.

you. san francisco unified in crisis tonight. parents, students and teachers are planning to protest against pending school closures at a board of education meeting. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live in studio and, gloria, it's all unraveling as the mayor's office steps in to help the school district avoid a state takeover. >> it is amanda, and the mayor says the goal is to help the district with a balanced budget because it needs to provide a clear plan and balanced budget to the state by the end of the year. on sunday, mayor london breed office announced the creation of a team of top city leaders to help the san francisco unified school district avoid a state takeover. she is calling it the school stabilization team. the new seven member team includes the executive director of the department of children, youth and their families. this comes as the district faces a $400 million budget deficit over a three year period, and is discussing staffing cuts and also school closures. last week, superintendent matt wayne was set to announce a list of closures, but that announcement

was postponed and yesterday wayne released a video and is promising weekly updates on those top priorities for the district. >> as a district, we need to balance our budget and eliminate the structural deficit. we also need to rehabilitate our fiscal and operational systems and then we have to have the tough discussions about closing and merging schools, so we use our resources more effectively. i'm not always for creations of task force, but i think we can use any of the help we can get. >> i feel confident that there's representation from the department of rec and park and department of children, youth and family services to organizations that we collaborate with, and i have very strong respect for. so i think anything and any expertise we will take to avoid a state takeover, that parent that abc seven talked to says the newly announced team is giving her hope. >> some parents have been frustrated by the recent uncertainty and the announcement of the new team follows an emergency sunday meeting where the district board of education spoke about terminating the superintendent. instead, though

they reached out to the mayor's office for help. and today there is a board meeting. students and parents are planning to talk during that meeting, and also rally an hour before they're asking that the district pause school closures. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> on the peninsula, a political fight is brewing between the san mateo county sheriff and a county executive. san mateo county sheriff cristina corpas alleges inappropriate conduct, collusion and abuse of power by the county manager, mike callagy. she claims his toxic behavior happened shortly after she took office in 2023. >> he made an inappropriate and offensive request, ordering me to inform him who i dated within the county and when a request i found demeaning and discriminatory. >> this comes after sheriff corpos fired assistant sheriff ryan monahan. supervisor ray mueller called the move possible

retaliation due to monahan's participation in an investigation of the sheriff's office. sheriff corpos calls the claim pure speculation. two supervisors shared a statement about county manager callahan saying, quote, he rejects the sheriff's claims as false and defamatory, and he welcomes a full, transparent and independent investigation into any allegations made against him. sheriff corpos responded with her own statement, saying their response doesn't address the serious concerns i raise related to inappropriate conduct. it sends a clear message when you raise a complaint in san mateo county, as a woman, you will be dismissed. she also says she thinks supervisor mueller should recuse himself from this issue. california's attorney general is suing exxonmobil, but the landmark lawsuit isn't about oil and gas. it's actually about plastic. exxon is one of the world's largest producers of polymers, which are the building blocks of plastic. for decades, exxon has promised that recycling would address the global plastic pollution crisis.

hearings today on capitol hill. this morning, retired nfl quarterback brett favre will testify before a republican led congressional committee. the hearing will focus on how states are falling short on using welfare to help families. favre has repaid more than $1 million in speaking fees funded by a welfare program in mississippi. but it's unclear how much he might say, because in 2023, a mississippi judge put a gag order on him and others being sued by the state. house republicans have said that a welfare misspending scandal involving favre points to the need for serious reform. another hearing today will focus on the supreme court's controversial ruling, giving former president donald trump special immunity for official actions. a senate judiciary committee will discuss the fallout of the decision. committee chair senator dick durbin says the hearing will, quote, highlight the blaring dangers of this far right ruling for the american people. >> all right. it's a big mess

quickly, just like yesterday. we're back into that summer sizzle this afternoon. we're in the 60s right now, so that's a launching pad to get us into the 70s. really early on and then into the 80s already by about 10 a.m. high pressure still in control and live doppler seven along with satellite for one more day. then tomorrow this low takes over and that will bring us a dramatically cooler forecast. more fall like for wednesday. i do want to take you into the caribbean because you're going to be hearing a lot about this storm over the next couple of days. this is potential. potential tropical cyclone nine. you can see the area of low pressure, all this cloud cover in the caribbean sea. it is going to strengthen very rapidly over the next 2 to 3 days. so we do have tropical storm watches and hurricane watches out becomes a category one storm here wednesday evening. and then it's likely going to become a major hurricane as it enters the warm waters of the gulf of mexico, becoming a category three storm. so we'll have some issues, certainly along the gulf coast of florida. we'll keep you updated on that storm because it
