sadness and anger at the oakland coliseum tonight as the a's get ready to leave oakland for good. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. it's a tough week for a's fans. but for the people keeping the coliseum running it's worse. they're not just losing the a's. they may be losing their jobs their livelihoods. as oakland gets ready to say its bitter goodbye abc7 news reporter j.r. stone talked with the workers being left behind. reporter thank you. >> oakland. >> we did it. smiles on their faces. despite the fact that this is one of the last oakland

a's games for these concession workers. how long have you worked here? nine years. that's tanisha lyles, her sister works here at the coliseum, too. and her grandmother worked here for more than 40 years before she retired a couple seasons ago. do you know what comes next after this, >> right now we're unsure. so. >> yeah, we don't know yet. unknown future for hundreds of employees who said working here sure was special. >> it's more sadness. you know, it's sad that they're that they're leaving and that they couldn't hold to. on >> you know, everyone is a little sad. so we're trying to trying to get through it. >> eileen morton and i have become friends over the years at different bay area sporting events. heck, she's been working a's games for 15 plus years, and before that came to the coliseum as a kid. but even she'll tell you, she has missed 1 or 2 of the historic a's games. >> the 20 game winning streak i missed that one. i took a day off. oh, we're all like family

here. and so if someone gets sick and that they always find out how you're doing and call and that. >> so that's a great thing. >> certainly a family atmosphere out here at the coliseum. but the union that represents these concession workers not happy. >> our membership is really upset about yesterday's negotiations around severance. >> yulisa alanis is vice president of the unite here local two. that represents around 400 of these stadium workers who officially work for aramark. lennox fears that workers could be left without severance pay and health care benefits. >> i want to say to the organization and i want to say to john fisher, it's not too late to do the right thing for these workers and for the community here in oakland. >> for now, though, these employees are making the best of their final moments at the coliseum. when that final game happens on thursday, have you thought about it? do you think

accuweather forecast. sandy. yeah. >> and dan, this is going to be a welcome change, that's for sure. especially when inland areas were cooking in the 90s and 100 seconds. today quite a different story. looking from our exploratorium camera. san francisco is socked in tonight. the marine layer has stretched out. it's about 1800 feet deep, and that is reflected in the temperatures down ten degrees san jose, napa, 11 degrees san francisco, eight degrees cooler from oakland to concord. it was up to 102. in livermore today, 100 in fairfield 93, san jose 97. concord 95. santa rosa. some of the hot spots you will notice 70 right around san francisco, oakland 64, though in half moon bay. as we look at your planner, tomorrow morning starts out gray and drizzly 5060s a mix of sun and fog at noontime, and it is a breezy, cooler afternoon. certainly, the fog will be spreading once again tomorrow evening, and you will notice that the winds will be kicking up as we head towards tomorrow afternoon. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast, which includes the weekend. >> dan okay sandhya, thanks.

we'll come back in a few minutes to you. we're following the wave of violence that has antioch's mayor considering calling in help. since the beginning of the month, there have been several shootings along a one mile stretch of sycamore drive. there were eight during a five day span tonight during a city council meeting. the public weighed in for well over an hou. about all of this violence. >> this is not a handful of people that is shooting. it's a whole city that understands there is no order. it started with our police department. it has trickled down. they see that you're not doing anything, the police is not doing anything. and so they think it's open season. they're coming from other communities and they're coming in and tearing it up. >> the mayor is planning to hold a news conference tomorrow to address some of the issues. we'll cover that. what do we want? >> transparency. what do we want? it now? >> in the city, dozens of parents and students rallied tonight outside the san francisco unified school district over possible school closures. the school board did

meet tonight, but the closures were not actually on the agenda. some sfusd is looking at closing several schools, citing declining enrollment, but has not given a clear timeline yet as to when a decision will happen. well before tonight's meeting, the superintendent addressed the decision by city leaders to call in a stabilization team to try to help the district. it's something he's embracing, at least right now. >> what the stabilization team offers is an opportunity to really go more in depth on some of those fiscal and operational issues we've identified, and leverage the expertise of an organization that is much larger than ours, dealing with these complex issues, and can come in and provide on the ground support and analysis of what we need to do. >> over the weekend, the board of education held an emergency meeting and decided not to oust the superintendent. however his status is expected to be reviewed again before the end of the year. as many as 18 people can't go home tonight after a

fire burned five buildings in redwood city. neighbors on poplar avenue near addison street say they heard an explosion, then saw the raging flames just before noon. firefighters say five buildings burned, including two homes, two apartment buildings and a building under construction. fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, though some pets are missing. sad to say, investigators are trying to find the cause of the fire. of course, four people were hurt today in a fire that raced through multiple houses in east contra costa county. the fire burned through three homes in pittsburg on warren way. this was just before 2:00 today. firefighters say everyone that was hurt will be okay. no word on what sparked this fire eithe. there. new developments in the growing strife within san mateo county. leadership. the county is hiring an independent firm now to investigate the sheriff's claims of misconduct by a county executive, sheriff christina corpus says the behavior started shortly after she took office in

2023. she's accused san mateo county manager mike callagy of abuse of power, discrimination and collusion. two county supervisors are defending callagy, saying the claims against him are false. those same supervisors claim the sheriff fired an assistant chief for cooperating with a separate investigation, which the sheriff says isn't true. so that fight continues and intensifies. we work every day on building a better bay area for everyone, especially a community who struggle for safe places to live has gone uncovered for just far too long. not enough attention paid to it. today, governor newsom signed a new slate of laws meant to expand housing for farm workers. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez looks at the difference this could make in the south bay. >> it's been a frustration. i think we all have. when you see bill sign, you're like, okay, well now everything's it's the beginning now of the next phase. the real work, that real work.

>> just beginning in santa clara and santa cruz counties tonight, as governor gavin newsom signs a new law to make it easier to build farm worker housing. assemblymember gail pellerin said a santa clara county supervisor brought this bill that needed revisions to her attention. >> it was difficult to implement because the housing had to be located on farmland, and farmland doesn't always have access to water and sewer and other things that you need for living. ab 3035 will now allow farmworker housing to be built within 15 miles of a farm. >> this makes more parcels of land, whether they're city owned or county owned, to be options for development. >> these are families that are attending our schools. they're working in our communities. >> we spoke with raymond cansino, who runs a social services agency in santa cruz county. he considers this bill a huge win for the farming communities. >> it's going to allow us to raise housing caps from 36 units to 150. >> cansino did note the law does

not provide necessary funding. >> unfortunately, we know the state's budget and the state budget woes that the biggest. i think, influx of making a big dent in this is in in any of these bills, which is actually funding for, you know, all housing. >> other bills signed by newsom today include helping migrant farmworkers secure housing year round, and not just seasonally. another helps extend paid sick leave. i think that that's one of the issues is that we're so detached from our food ecosyste, that we don't know all the work and preparation that goes into it. >> having some actual goals similar like we have city rhna goals in terms of how many housing units need to be in relation to your community, that you have to build out. i think the same expectations should be done on farming and agriculture in the south bay. >> lauren martinez abc seven news. >> one of the highest profile bills still sitting on the governor's desk tonight could have a huge impact on the future

coast guard helicopter airlifted an eight year old boy from a royal princess cruise ship 20 miles off the coast of eureka in northern california. the boy was diagnosed with appendicitis and needed to get to the hospital very quickly, so cruise ship doctors called in the coast guard to help the boy's family was also hoisted up and flown with him. as far as we know, he is doing okay. we'll follow up. well, time now for news to know. rounding up some major stories people will still be talking about in the days to come from a hall of famers surprise announcement to the tense hearings on the high price of weight loss drugs, here's the news to know. >> stop ripping us off. >> lawmakers at the u.s. capitol grilling the ceo of the company behind ozempic and wegovy about high prices, the head of novo nordisk blames the cost of development and pharmacy benefit managers for their prices, though the ceo says most people with private insurance pay $25 or less for those weight loss drugs. federal prosecutors

officially charged a man with attempting to assassinate former president donald trump. the suspect is accused of pointing a gun at trump as he was golfing two weekends ago. prosecutors say the suspect stalked trump in florida for more than a month. the legal battles are growing for sean diddy combs. a new lawsuit accuses the music mogul of drugging a woman and sexually assaulting her on video in 2001. >> i'm glad that he is locked up, but that's a temporary feeling of relief. >> combs is already in federal custody under indictment for conspiracy, sex trafficking and other charges. he pleaded not guilty and is due back in court in two weeks. his representatives have not commented on the new lawsuit. and finally, a startling announcement from nfl hall of famer brett favre testifying about the scandal that's put a black eye on his reputation. >> sadly, i also lost an investment in a company that i believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug. i thought it would help others and

i'm sure you'll understand why it's too late for me, because i've recently been diagnosed with parkinson's. >> the green bay packers legend shared his parkinson's diagnosis as he testified before a house committee investigating mississippi's misuse of welfare funding. favre is one of dozens accused of taking millions meant for needy families. today, he denied wrongdoing once again. uninsured californians can have their covid vaccines covered starting in october. the federal bridge access program, to cover the cost of the vaccine was supposed to run out, run until december, but it ran out of money back in august. the out-of-pocket cost of the shot is about 200 bucks. now, the california department of health says its own version of the program will run the rest of the year to cover those folks who need it. free vaccines will be available at local health department clinics. santa cruz county strawberry farmers took a really big hit in 2003. according to a report from the agricultural commissioner,

strawberry production dropped by about 16% from the previous year, a drop in value of about $35 million. officials say the decrease is due to storm damage and flooding from december 2022 through march of 2023. strawberries were still the top crop, making up about 28% of the county's agricultural revenue. signs of progress tonight in our mission to build a better bay area, we always try to highlight some of the breakthroughs in that work. and tonight we have some to tell you about. three in fact, the first, a shuttered mall in the east bay, is transforming itself into a hub for tech. the old bayfair mall in san leandro has reimagined into a 400,000 square foot facility with flexible production, research and development space. vantage robotics now does most of its work from a former bookstore, and the extra space is obviously great for flying drones. it's

also very accessible for public transit. >> it was strange to begin with for a lot of people, but as soon as they saw the setup, it made sense. a lot of people have who have come here also have seen this place, and they started re-envisioning how a tech company can be. >> and just down the way biotech company berkeley yeast has expanded its operations to the building. vantage robotics hopes they'll serve as an example to others considering moving in, but it's a very innovative approach. our next breakthrough is san francisco's effort to revitalize itself through those entertainment zones we already know about. the zone created that down that is allowing for oktoberfest and the plan to add additional zones. now, the board of supervisors has greenlighted plans to allow for additional locations. there are two more downtown, three in the yerba buena neighborhood and union square area, and two in the east cut. one important aspect of the new rules is it is easier to serve alcohol outdoors, and our

other breakthrough, this one is impacting our climate and our beaches. thousands of volunteers across california picked up more than a quarter million pounds of trash on saturday. it was the 40th annual california coastal cleanup day. so far, only 60% of cleanup sites have reported their final numbers, so the total will go up of all the trash volunteers have collected over the past 40 years, about 75% of it has been plastic. all right, let's go back and talk to sandhya patel about the full forecast. it's been hot, but that's changing. sandhya. >> oh, big time. dan, tomorrow morning you're going to wake up and feel like it's a different day. it's going to be noticeably cooler right now. i want to show you the live pictures from our tower cameras, and you can pretty much see why we've got the marine layer back in. you can't even make out 8-80 from emeryville. certainly is a very murky view. so here's a look at what has deepened the marine layer so quickly. area of low pressure off the california

coast. the wind is flowing counterclockwise, and that is just pretty much helped to bring in the southerly surge earlier today. high pressure getting pushed to the east. so the heat is gone, at least for a day. here's a look at live doppler seven. we have the fog around not just near the coast, but around the bay as well. visibility is just over two miles and half moon bay, so watch out if you are commuting or hitting the roadways early tomorrow morning. temperatures right now, anywhere from the 50s to the 60s. unless you're out towards brentwood and clear lake. that's the only two places where i can find some 70s still. delta breeze is going 26 miles an hour out towards fairfield, rio vista. the winds are going to increase as we head towards tomorrow. so tomorrow morning, still a nice breeze heading out towards the delta. but then you notice it picks up not just near the coast but around many parts of the bay area, around 25 to 30 miles an hour. and that will continue into the evening hours from okay. hard to miss the gray skies there. overnight tonight. fog and patchy drizzle tomorrow.

breezy and much cooler. and your weekend weather will feature near average temperatures. we go hour by hour tomorrow morning. many of you will start out with the overcast conditions heading into the noontime. still a lot of fog in the north bay. parts of the east bay shoreline along the coast. it's going to stay socked in and then higher clouds will move in. so not completely clearing the coast or even parts of the bay believe it or not, drizzle in the morning temperatures in the 50s 60s, partly to mostly cloudy skies. tomorrow afternoon it's going to remain cloudy all day long. breezy near the coast, 62 degrees inland areas in the low 80s. you will see the sun there. it will be a nice day, but certainly not as hot as it has been. all right, i want to turn your attention to tropical storm helene. it is packing winds of 60 miles an hour, nearing the yucatan peninsula. it is expected to rapidly strengthen in the warm waters of the gulf of mexico. considerable rain and flooding is expected from not just the yucatan peninsula area, but parts of cuba and florida.

cat one tomorrow. it's a category three, a major hurricane nearing the florida panhandle. by thursday, 120 mile an hour winds storm surge up to 15ft. so these are going to be some of the big concerns tornadoes, winds. and then it will eventually weaken as it moves up the coast. excuse me. up towards the tennessee area. the accuweather seven day forecast. breezy and much cooler tomorrow a minor rebound thursday and friday. it heats up again in our inland communities into the mid 90s, but cooler for the weekend. bouncing back early next week. dan we'll be
