enforcement to fight a surge in violence. >> we are all going to miss this place. it's been just a little weird this whole week. >> sadness. anger. confusion. a's fans in oakland are experiencing the full range of emotions this week. we've got just two more games before the team's final goodbye. >> a lot going on this morning. it's wednesday, september 25th. >> let's begin with a check of the weather with meteorologist drew tuma. >> here we go. we're back to reality. it's going to feel a lot cooler out there today. finally, that fall feel is back. we talked about how wednesday would be your day if you want it to feel and look like autumn, that's exactly what we're in store for. so live. look outside. you're looking at our exploratorium camera. our marine layer is back. we have a lot of fog out there. even some of that cloud cover pushing inland at this hour. so current temperatures, we are running a bit cooler than we were this time yesterday. that's to be expected. as we have that fog overhead, we're likely looking at some drizzle along the coast as well. we're in the mid 50s to the low 60s right now. the cloud

cover is slow to break down in most areas except inland. the big story inland we are much cooler by about 15 to 20 degrees. daytime highs today in the low 80s, which is a sharply cooler forecast than the triple digit heat we had the past couple of days in spots. now around the bay shoreline. we will be fighting the cloud cover all morning long. the afternoon we get sunshine. but look at those daytime highs. upper 60s to near 70. when we're well into the 80s and 90s the past couple of days. and along the coast we'll keep it cloudy, mostly all day long. highs only in the low 60s. let's check in with gloria into. >> happy hump day to everybody out there. so right now this is a look at our overall map of the roads here in the bay area. you can see it's pretty much in the green. so no major issues except the usual slowdown. that's from 11th street on westbound 205 to north flynn road. on westbound 580 and looking at your drive times for this morning from tracy to dublin, that is in the red. always a little slow there this time of the morning. 46

minutes, san rafael to san francisco 15 minutes and antioch to concord, 14 minutes. and a look at your mass transit for this morning. everything is on time, so that's some good news. and right now i am tracking breaking news at the live desk. a bipartisan senate report is out blasting the secret service over its failures to protect former president donald trump. the report details missteps and oversights on the day of the july assassination attempt in butler, pennsylvania. the report says that the secret service failed to make clear decisions and did not communicate properly with local law enforcement. it also states that the agency did not provide necessary resources that caused foreseeable and preventable security failings. the senate homeland security and governmental affairs committee released the report. it interviewed multiple secret service personnel and found that some declined to acknowledge individual areas of responsibility for planning or security, which contributed to the failure to prevent the

shooting. the report found that local law enforcement raised concerns about the building where the shooter was located before the rally, but no steps were taken to mitigate that threat. an emergency services unit commander told the committee about a walkthrough. two days before the event, and he said it was, quote, incredibly disorganized with no coordination and said he felt like, quote, there was really no plan since the attack. acting secret service director ronald roe has acknowledged that the event was a failure by the agency. reggie aqui. >> thanks, gloria. antioch is dealing with a spike in violence. more than a dozen shootings in just three weeks, and the city may not have enough officers to handle it all. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here with reaction from neighbors about what's happening and perhaps how to stop it. lena, the mayor, may ask for more law enforcement help. >> reggie aqui. that's exactly what mayor lamar hernandez thorpe already called for. in a video posted to his instagram over the weekend. this is in response to a string of several

shootings along a one mile stretch of sycamore drive. just this month, there were eight during a five day span. the mayor has called them gang related and retaliatory in nature. the public weighed in for well over an hour about the violence during last night's city council meeting. >> this is not a handful of people that are shooting. it's a whole city that understands there is no order. it started with our police department. it has trickled down. they see that you're not doing anything. the police is not doing anything. and so they think it's open season. they're coming from other communities and they're coming in and tearing it up. >> i'm also calling for mutual assistance from our regional law enforcement partners, so that we can continue to add more patrols to both the sycamore and the carvalho and carvalho road. lastly, i'm calling on governor newsom for more chp support in the mayor's message posted to and posted to instagram. >> he also discussed limiting access to the sycamore community and carvalho road, establishing a curfew and asking governor

newsom to send in the national guard. the mayor is expected to hold a press conference this morning at 11 to propose funding for mutual aid assistance in these parts of town. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. now to a story from seven on your side and a warning about scams. two financial crimes in the south bay resulted in victims losing hundreds of thousands of dollars. the scam is known as a business email compromise. that's when a suspect hacks into a business email account and uses it to reroute payments into their personal account. in january, san jose police say their investigation found pennsylvania resident elena torres was the primary suspect for this scam. police recovered most of the money and returned it to the owner. an arrest warrant has been issued for torres as police look for other victims. >> this isn't just happening locally, but it's also happening nationally and a lot of perpetrators are involved. so suspect. torres is one of many who are behind this scam, and so

a lot of them are also international. >> we've heard the tips before, but they bear repeating. that includes not giving up personal or financial information and to no scammer payment methods like gift cards, wire transfers or cash by mail. >> we want to go to a live look now at the oakland coliseum property from our camera along interstate 880 in oakland. >> the a's have just two more games left at the coliseum. we know it's been a tough week for fans preparing to say goodbye and for staff. many who have worked at the coliseum for decades, it's more sadness, you know, it's sad that they're that they're leaving and that they couldn't hold on to, you know, everyone is a little sad. >> so we're trying to trying to get through it. >> it is a bittersweet moment for people trying to make the best of their last days at the coliseum. >> when that final game happens on thursday, have you thought about it? do you think there will be tears in their eyes? >> yeah, there probably will be

a lot of people have been here a long time, longer than i, but we're all going to miss this place. >> workers are not just losing the a's. they also might be losing their jobs. according to the union representing stadium employees, when the team leaves oakland, hundreds could be left without severance pay and health care benefits. >> a's fans have a lot of feelings heading into the final games at the coliseum. when it comes to the reaction to the owner, john fisher's recent letter to fans, they have been happy to share their opinions. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> at the end of this week, the oakland coliseum will still be standing. but with no baseball team for the first time in 57 years, brian johansson will be at the last a's game on thursday. >> if i start talking about it, i'll start crying. i got my wife. i got my son, and then i have the oakland a's and that's the way my life has always been. >> johansson is co-owner of baseball's last dive bar, which sells a's merch that reflects the fan experience. he's an a's diehard, but he's angered by the

letter a's embattled owner, john fisher, released to a's fans on monday a letter that johansson refers to as one slap in the face after another. >> he just issued a statement. in a letter, he tried everything he could. he didn't. they tried multiple times to relocate outside of oakland, fisher writes in part. >> i can tell you this from the heart we tried. staying in oakland was our goal. it was our mission, and we failed to achieve it. and for that, i'm genuinely sorry. johansson isn't buying it. >> they didn't try to make it work in oakland. you know, they never offered $850 million in private equity in oakland. they never offered just a stadium only with with no development around it like they did in las vegas. in oakland they never offered up debt financing. >> in a statement to abc seven news, a spokesperson for oakland mayor xiang tao says, quote, fisher never meaningfully invested in his roster or his stadium plan while his franchise valuation shot up $1 billion. that's why he fell short of his stated goals, both on and off the field. >> he doesn't have to say anything. all he can do. he

those summer clothes back way back in the closet today. look at that. we have our marine layer back in a big way. it's just a cloudy morning out there and temperatures pretty steadily in the 60s all morning long. we're not going to have that massive warming trend like we had the past couple of mornings. this is a significant cooldown over the last couple of days. remember back on monday? it was so hot out there. our hottest areas like san rafael hit 100 for widespread 80s and 90s. today, we're seeing anywhere from 15 to 30 degrees cooler and our daytime highs. most areas will stay in the 60s and 70s, and that's actually below average for this time of the year. that's a massive drop as cooler air descends in from the north. here's live doppler seven along with satellite by by high pressure. that was the heat pump that brought us the warm temperatures yesterday and monday. now we have this trough setting up along the west coast that is dragging in that cooler air from the north. and it's also supplying us with the return of the marine layer. so here's future weather. we still

have significant cloud cover around 10 a.m. this morning. today is one of those days where across san francisco and along the coast, it's going to stay cloudy all day long. so limited sunshine in the city, but away from the coast we do have bright skies. however, temperatures are going to remain below average for our afternoon high, so you can see a lot of cloud cover along the coast. we'll keep it in the 60s there. 60s and 70s around the bay shoreline. only the low 80s. that's it for our warmest areas inland. but we do have a warming trend heading into the weekend. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. >> drew. thank you. southern states bracing for impact. tropical storm helene expected to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall tomorrow. coming up, the evacuation school closures and emergency declarations in florida and georgia, transportation agencies that are facing an unfortunate fiscal cliff. >> bay area transit agencies are in a financial pinch. some are facing a shortfall of millions of dollars. >> you can now stream the highest grossing animated film

breaking overnight. such a scary story. a person has died after someone a bus in la and held people hostage. lapd says around one this morning, someone got on the bus, held the driver and two passengers at gunpoint. the gunman shot one person on the bus. police used spike strips to stop the bus and punctured a tire. at one point, the bus even flashed. call 9-1-1 on the back of it. you see it right there? about an hour later, the bus stopped where police blocked off the area. police took the suspected hijacker into custody. the person who was shot died at the hospital. and the motive is unclear. >> in san francisco, a car crash on market street is under investigation. it briefly disrupted muni service last night. it happened just after

seven at market and fifth streets. you can see the mangled car right there on its side, which appeared to come to a rest on a muni platform where people would catch a bus or light rail. police say the driver was not hurt, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. some of the bay area's busiest transit agencies are in a critical financial condition. now, the san francisco county transportation authority hosted a meeting to address the laundry list of issues. money from both the federal and state government is drying up. muni, bart and caltrain could face a collective budget deficit as high as $700 million by 2027. the various transit agencies have been warning about their budgetary issues since ridership cratered at the start of the pandemic. >> we can't afford right now to take any options off the table. we really need to follow any kind of path that might lead to some relief to address the problem, the agencies and some

lawmakers have proposed placing a taxpayer funding measure. >> this would be on the november 2026 ballot. at yesterday's meeting, several officials acknowledged even if a funding measure made it onto the ballot, it would not be an easy thing to get passed. >> a heads up for drivers roadwork is going to cause some headaches on three of the bay area's major bridges. so let's start in the bay bridge, where work is set to start tomorrow night. if you're heading into san francisco, the far right lanes will be closed from the yerba buena tunnel to the end of the western span of the bridge. this will happen from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. monday through friday, all the way through may of next year. there's also work closing lanes on both the upper and lower decks of the richmond-san rafael bridge overnight. that work started earlier this week. it runs through october 4th and then to the golden gate bridge, where work is happening this week. it starts every night at 9 p.m. this is going through friday. depending on the night, you may experience only one lane going north or south, and

apparently some nights a sidewalk on the east side of the bridge will close an hour early at 8 p.m. to accommodate that work. the highest grossing animated film of all time debuts on disney plus today. when i went to speak with the team at emeryville's pixar. they told me they never thought inside out two would be this big of a success. you know, i want the behind the scenes information so when the box office hit and it was just so huge. did you and the rest of the folks at pixar just go? >> we were. yes. no, we were shocked. you were shocked. we were shocked. we were all you know, it was the weekend. we were at home getting emails from disney with box office updates. and it was like, refresh, refresh. is this real? is this really happening? because opening weekend we had expectations. it way surpassed the expectations. >> abc seven news was at pixar campus in june as the story of a teenage girl and the emotions in her head was about to premiere. that's when we first met the creative team behind the sequel and saw their new star character, anxiety. and there

of days over the city and along the coast. today it's going to stay pretty cloudy all day long. that will reinforce the cooler air by about 130. you could see temperature wise it's much more comfortable, way more comfortable. farther inland with temperatures only in the 70s at that hour compared to the 90s we've been in. so just dress for fall today. that's the big take away. that fall feel returns here in our microclimates, starting in the south bay, 77 in cupertino, 80, in san jose, which is about a 15 degree drop in our temperatures compared to the past couple of days. 68 that's it for santa cruz. so cool. along the coast, redwood city a dramatic drop in our daytime highs compared to the past couple of days. only 77 in redwood city, 69 in san mateo. cloudy and cool along the coast across the city today, expect very minimal sunshine. it's going to be very cloudy all day today with temperatures mainly in the 60s. in the north bay. we get heat relief. finally, 74 in napa, 73 in petaluma, 76 in san rafael. about 79 in calistoga, in the east bay. it's cloudy this morning, some afternoon sunshine, only 69 in oakland, 70

called out by animal rescue groups. instead, the company will now recommend adoption. rabbits are often abandoned by people who purchase them without understanding the extensive care and money required to keep them healthy. >> now for a building a better bay area breakthrough in the east bay, a shuttered mall in san leandro is transforming itself into a hub for tech. the old bayfair mall has been reimagined into 400,000ft■!s of flexible production, research and development space. vantage robotics now does most of its work from a former bookstore, and the extra space is pretty great for flying drones. it's also accessible by public transit. >> it was strange to begin with, but a lot of people. but as soon as they saw the setup, it made sense. a lot of people have who have come here also have seen this place, and they started re-envisioning how a tech company can be down the hall. >> biotech company berkeley yeast has expanded its operations to the building.

are issuing travel alerts and letting people rebook flights without charge. as hurricane helene gained strength in the caribbean. abc reporter rhiannon ally has more on what local people are doing to prepare for the storm. >> this morning, people on florida's gulf coast bracing for a major hurricane. helene is expected to rapidly intensify into a category three storm before making landfall. >> i've seen what the storms can do and you know, we've been lucky for so long, so you just never know. >> helene is projected to hit near the big bend area of florida tomorrow, packing 115 mile per hour winds up to a foot of rain and up to 15ft of storm surge. let's talk about the number one loss of life and property that is storm surge 10 to 15ft steinhatchee cedar key, crystal river, 6 to 10ft. >> that's a lot of water for those low lying areas. 4 to 8ft around tampa bay causes big problems down to sarasota. >> helene's progression could be one of the fastest on record. it's expected to grow from a tropical storm into a major

today the fda will hold a public meeting to give details on the new process it's working on to decide which chemicals are safe in our food. the fda has faced plenty of criticism for its current system. it's outdated and slow to respond to new research identifying health concerns with chemicals previously found safe. the issue has prompted several states, including california, to create their own laws banning certain additives after the fda failed to act. uninsured californians can have their covid vaccines covered starting in october. the federal bridge access program, to cover the cost of the vaccine was supposed to run until december, but it ran out of money back in august. the out of pocket cost of the shot is about $200. now, the california department of health says its own version of the program will run the rest of the year. free vaccines will be available at local health department clinics. >> santa cruz county strawberry farmers took a big hit in 2023, according to a report from the agricultural commission.

strawberry production dropped by about 16% compared to the previous year. a drop in value of about $35 million. officials say the decrease is due to storm damage and flooding from december 20th through the 22nd. excuse me, between december of 2022 through march of 2023. strawberries were still the top crop, making about 28% of the county's agricultural revenue. >> it will soon be easier to build farm worker housing in santa clara and santa cruz counties. governor newsom just signed a new law to expand housing for the community. it will allow farm worker housing to be built within 15 miles of a farm. this makes more parcels of land, whether city or county owned, to be options for development. >> it was difficult to implement because the housing had to be located on farmland, and farm land doesn't always have access to water and sewer and other things that you need for living. >> governor newsom also signed

two other bills yesterday. one helping migrant farm workers secure housing year round, another extending paid sick leave. >> one of the highest profile bills still sitting on the governor's desk this morning could have a big impact on the future of ai. now it's getting some major celebrity support from hollywood. a long list of celebrities, including jessica chastain, pedro pascal and shonda rhimes, signed on to a letter urging gavin newsom to sign scott wiener's ai safety bill. this would require the largest tech companies to protect against ai misuse. some worry it could cripple innovation. others say it could mitigate risks to the public. the celebrity letter says in part, we are your supporters. we want to continue to believe that you are a leader who will stand up for everyone's well-being, not just for a few silicon valley giants. and now it's time for abc. seven mornings advancer our way of highlighting some things happening in the day ahead here in the bay area. >> first, a three day meeting on the use and regulation of ai kicks off today in the east bay.

uc berkeley's center for law and technology is hosting its seventh annual ai institute. the summit is focused on exploring how artificial intelligence, law, and business all correlate with each other. experts are set to dive into the latest developments in ai and ethics surrounding the topic. >> happening today, it's the grand reopening for the capitola wharf in santa cruz county. the wharf needed extensive repairs after severe storms from last december and this january. despite the reopening today, the public has had access to the wharf since august. not everything is back to normal. some buildings and businesses are still trying to make a comeback. the grand opening event starts at 2 p.m. with live music and food at the end of the wharf. >> the san francisco police department mounted patrol unit is celebrating its 150th anniversary today in golden gate park. the unit will host an open house from 11 to 2 p.m. at the sfpd stables on jfk drive. police chief bill scott will also be there for a special anniversary presentation. since
