>> good evening. thank you for joining us. breaking news tonight. new york city's mayor eric adams, has been indicted on federal charges. abc's senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky joins us now. and aaron, this indictment seems have been seems to have been in the works for a very long time. at least ten months. byron, federal prosecutors and the fbi took the dramatic step last november of seizing the mayor's phones. and ever since his administration has been under this cloud. the mayor, in a statement tonight says, i always knew that if i stood my ground for new yorkers, that i would be a target and a target. i became. if i am charged, i am innocent and i will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit. a real show of defiance for mayor eric adams, even as he is now facing this criminal indictment. although it remains sealed. so we don't know the exact charges, and certainly

innocent until proven guilty in this country. i'm struck by the number of democrats in his own party who have called for him to step aside. many of them are his political opponents. some planned on running against him as he sought reelection, but one congresswoman, alexandria ocasio-cortez, came out and called for his resignation even before news of the indictment hit. saying that his administration had become dysfunctional, there had been high level resignations in just the last several days. the police commissioner, the schools chancellor, the health commissioner, some of them had been caught up in this federal investigation as well. and we'll get you out on this question. when might we see the mayor turn himself in? likely next week is when he'll have to appear in court. federal prosecutors may say something about the charges before then, but the mayor is defiant. but investigators have been taking a look at his fundraising from his 2021 campaign. whether there was illegal foreign money from turkey that's expanded to cover possible bid rigging and enforcement of regulations covering bars and nightclubs. whether that was all done on the

up and up. aaron katersky, thank you so much. thanks, byron. we will of course, be closely following this story on abc news live and gma tomorrow morning. we turn now to continued fallout from the explosive hearing on capitol hill, where senators from both sides of the aisle blasted the big pharma's ceo about the sky high prices of drugs like ozempic and why they cost so much more in the u.s. than anywhere else on earth. here's abc's elizabeth schulze >> we focus less around what are we going to eat and what are we going to consume and more about what are we going to go do? kim and john carlos are among thousands of americans who credit ozempic with changing their lives. they've lost a combined 170 pounds to date, but it comes at a cost, a very high one. in their case, a large insurance premium. we did a diet plan with where we pay a lot of money for our insurance, and so what's been an issue for us is

getting coverage pulled. that's why the couple drove more than ten hours to the nation's capital. this week to hear the ceo of novo nordisk, the danish company behind weight loss drugs ozempic and wegovy, get grilled over the drug's high price tag. >> nobody here is asking novo nordisk to provide charity to the american people. treat the american people the same way that you treat people all over the world. stop ripping us off. >> every company deserves to make money. but at some point in time you have to stop and you have to think what is reasonable and what makes sense. >> kim and john find themselves in an all too familiar scenario, needing the life changing prescription for ozempic. but on a roller coaster ride, figuring out how to pay for it. oh oh seven it's the drug that's taken america by storm. ozempic just one of a class of drugs that

also includes mounjaro. originally meant to treat people with chronic conditions like type two diabetes. now used for weight loss and obesity. >> there's cardiovascular benefits for patients. we see benefits with some and patients who have chronic kidney disease and fatty liver disease. >> the drugs have created a buzz on social media. >> i am down a total of 122 pounds. total weight loss is 17 pounds and 16 weeks, and in hollywood, celebrities sounding off like kelly osbourne. >> people hate on it because they want to do it. >> amy schumer and everybody is lying. everyone's like a smaller portion, like shut the up. you're on ozempic. >> but many users like kim and john need to either fight to get the medication covered by insurance or risk paying massive out of pocket costs. >> since 2018, novo nordisk has made nearly $50 billion in sales off of these two drugs.

>> as it stands, wannabes list price is $1,349 per month. the very same drug, just $265 a month in canada and $92 a month in the united kingdom. but this week, on capitol hill, the ceo told senators, it's a lot more complicated than that. >> 80% of all americans with insurance have access to these medicines at $25 or less, for a month's supply, so. so it's a price point that the pharmacy counter we have to talk about, we don't decide the price for patients. and that's set by by the insurance companies, pharmacy benefit managers, the pbms are really the middlemen. >> and they're basically driving some of the costs because they also want to get a profit from the medication as well. >> senator bernie sanders led the hearing. do you see any momentum for bipartisan legislation? >> absolutely, absolutely. and

we are making progress and pointed to just how many people could be impacted by the ability to get this medication. hundreds of thousands of people in this country who desperately need this product will not be able to afford it. >> those costs aren't regulated in the u.s. like they are in other countries, where the government typically negotiates a drug's price. >> anything that can help patients get access. i'm. i'm supportive of. >> after the hearing, novo nordisk's ceo wouldn't commit to lowering prices. do you have any plans to lower the price of these drugs in the united states? but the company did release a statement saying in part. unfortunately, the reality is that even when we reduce prices, as we have with both ozempic and wegovy, patients in the u.s. are left paying a price that does not reflect the reductions. i felt like the language of our senators was very much centered around understanding that obesity is a disease in terms of the. the ceo. i felt like his answers,

prison sentence for fraud and tax evasion. here's nightline co-anchor juju chang. >> it's tough. it's tough. es last time she was in this courtroom, it was when my dad reality tv star savannah chrisley, anxious to hear if her mother might be freed from prison early. >> outside of federal court this morning. >> and how is she holding up? >> she's okay. >> savannah's mom, julie chrisley and father todd, a once high flying couple often showcasing their wealth on their reality show, chrisley knows best. >> we're not perfect, but perfect should be something you should strive to be. >> today, they're both serving stiff prison sentences after being convicted of multiple counts of defrauding banks and evading taxes. but in june, an appeals court vacated one of julie's fraud convictions, citing insufficient evidence. julie's attorney, fighting for a reduced sentence. >> we want to get julie home sooner. if anybody deserves to get home sooner, it's her. >> a lot of weight in the courtroom, a lot at stake there.

ones. and as the reality stars were starting to shine, the chrisleys failed to file or pay taxes. from 2013 to 2016. earlier this year, i sat down with savannah to see what life has been like for her and her siblings. with their parents locked up, we have been canceled. >> our show was canceled. everyone turned their backs, and you really can't get much more canceled than that. >> what do you say to folks who might think they deserve to serve time hard time? >> we're not tough on tough crime. we're tough on white collar crime. money means more than a human life. if the at the place we're at right now, if you say someone stole $17 million, what is imprisoning them for $60,000 a year going to do? it's costing taxpayers even more money to imprison them. and you're not getting any of the money back. i think for me, when

people say they were convicted, i say, if you want to convict them, convict them, but convict them on the truth, there was not sufficient evidence. >> so you're convinced that they're not guilty 100%? in the nearly two years since her parents reported to prison, the 27 year old has taken on a whole new set of responsibilities, including taking her siblings to visit their parents in prison. >> we just switch off between mom and dad. >> and so what are those visits like? >> we go, we sit, we laugh, we walk. you know, we walk around and we just try to have a little bit of normalcy. we have run into an issue. i know she wants me to wear the orange. >> savannah, raising her teenage brother grayson and 11 year old niece chloe at her home in nashville, which she tells us she bought with her own reality show earnings. together, they await their parents release from prison. today in that atlanta courtroom, the prosecutor adamant, arguing sentences are
