a small step forward this week. officials approved the demolition of the tropicana hotel, which is the location the team wants to put its new stadium. it is set to be imploded on october 9th. the a's timeline has construction starting next year, with the ballpark opening in 2028, but they still need to work out the financing. the money is still not squared away, so we'll see. now larry will have more reaction from the players ahead in sports and stay with abc seven news for coverage of tomorrow's final a's game at the coliseum. ever. we have coverage on air, online and anywhere you stream. >> well moving on. new details tonight on a deadly fire in union city earlier this week. it has turned into a murder investigation. that fire happened early monday at a home on 14th street. a 66 year old man died in that fire. and investigators believe he was the home's owner. police have arrested a 33 year old man. it is not clear what his connection is to the crime. however investigators shed more light on what happened. >> there's indications, that the

suspect was sort of, recklessly using a lighter and lighting items on fire. and that that, spread quickly and consumed one of the rooms and spread into the remainder of the house. >> a 57 year old woman was also arrested in connection with the fire, but she was later released. >> and some developing news in new york city, the history making indictment against its mayor. sources tell abc news that mayor eric adams is under federal grand jury indictment amid a corruption investigation at city hall. abc news senior investigative reporter aaron katersky breaks down the case. >> the exact charges remain sealed, but sources tell abc news new york city mayor eric adams has been indicted by a federal grand jury. the former police officer elected mayor less than three years ago, has spent nearly a year of his term under federal investigation. authorities have been looking

than where they were just 24 hours ago across many areas like livermore, nine degrees down, eight degrees. in concord, we had double digit drop in temperatures earlier this afternoon with mostly 60s and 70s. the breeze is still up there around the delta 21 fairfield, 24, in rio vista will keep it going for another hour or two before the winds really taper and those temperatures go up. so first thing tomorrow morning, it's a foggy start. numbers in the 50s, sun for most areas by noontime, except for the coastline where there will be some fog. and then it's a warmer afternoon, low 60s to low 90s before temperatures come down. we have a heat up coming our way. i'll be back with that in just a few minutes. >> here we go again, sandhya. thanks very much. in the south bay, a plan to bring another costco to san jose is moving forward despite strong opposition from neighbors. it would go in on prospect road right near westgate shopping center and prospect high school. san jose's planning commission held a meeting tonight and members received an earful during the lengthy public

comment period. there were complaints that the new costco would be just too big for the neighborhood. a number of speakers cited the potential for more crashes due to the increase in traffic in the area, combining drivers who aren't paying attention, or they frantically search for limited parking with students who are distracted and an already known to be dangerously congested area is the opposite of safe. >> i think. one what we're seeing here is this project has met the requirements that the city has set forth. i don't see a case for us making a different finding than that. >> in the end, they unanimously approved the environmental impact report. the plan will now go before the san jose city council, which is expected to take it up next month. >> a live look now at the upper deck of the bay bridge. not too much going on, but starting tomorrow, late night drivers might face a bit more congestion than usual. that's because of a caltrans maintenance project

that will leave the far right lanes closed. lanes will close at 8 p.m. monday through friday and will stay closed overnight until 4 a.m. the next morning. caltrans has warned drivers there will be delays and you might need to use alternative bridge access to get around the congestion. this project will not be finished until may of 2025. >> governor newsom vetoed one of the few reparations bills that made it to his desk. for years, we followed the push for reparations in california, hitting a major obstacle when lawmakers failed to vote on some of the most critical bills. the bill newsom vetoed today would would have allowed black females to be compensated if the government took their land inappropriately. that compensation would have run through a new agency. but the bill to create that agency never passed. >> giant oak trees that have withstood the test of time may get a new layer of protections in the south bay, santa clara county is considering a new ordinance that protects oak trees. 150 years old and older.

the trees are considered a vital part of the county's natural and cultural heritage, and now there's a public outreach underway about the best ways to keep healthy and protect them from removal. the mighty oak would join another type of tree under a protected status. >> our tree preservation ordinance goes towards redwoods right now, and we want to incorporate the language of the oak trees. per the referral from the board of supervisors. >> the county says it's hard to determine a tree's age, so there is going to be a little bit of a guessing game happening based on the size of the trunk and the height. >> a lot more coming here. a family on a cruise ship with their little boy's fever getting worse and worse. tonight we're hearing from the pilot behind this dramatic rescue off the california coast, and a beloved landmark ripped apart by storms finally restored the celebration as capitals iconic wharf reopens. some bay area kids on vacation leave a message in a

we wrote this note because we heard so many stories about doing this. >> the note went to on say that the writers were leaving their resort in fiji at 5:00, and to please write back to their sunnyvale address. it was signed in july of 2016 by savannah kate and janis, but there was no last name. the group, hoping to connect with the three ladies, discovered that they no longer lived at that sunnyvale address, but the discovery of the bottle made local headlines in australia, eventually getting the attention of the messengers behind that message in a bottle. >> we have since spoken to janis earlier today via radio locally here in townsville, so it's been quite exciting actually finding the owners of the letter. >> and as it turned out, the authors never forgot about the message they'd sent. >> so they were all there on holiday in august and then they all thought to themselves, i wonder what happened to that bottle that we sent off. >> now the townsville hike and explore group have made plans to reunite savannah, kate and janis with the note they sent those eight years ago, and we're going to include a couple of newspaper

at a live picture from our 880 camera looking towards the oakland arena, you will notice that there is some fog out there that is going to change as the last game is played. a's take on the rangers again. first pitch at 1237. mainly sunny skies, 65 degrees. ninth inning. it is going to be sunny and warmer with the temperature coming up into the low 70s. so yeah, not exactly a bright ending for fans but certainly bright skies expected. not the case. as we take you back to the gulf of mexico. right now we are tracking hurricane helene. it is expected to bring catastrophic storm surge and winds. it pounded the yucatan peninsula, yucatan peninsula, and it is already sending rain bands across much of the southeast tonight. right now, packing winds of 85 miles an hour, moving to the north at 12, it is expected to rapidly intensify over the warm waters of the gulf of mexico, a category two

tomorrow morning, a category four as it comes in, closes in on the big bend area of florida by tomorrow evening, with 130 mile an hour winds rapidly weakens as it continues across atlanta and into the tennessee valley. but here are some of the concerns. there are not only watches and warnings, hurricane storm surge watches and warnings, but they also have that storm surge that could be up to 20ft is the latest indication. and it's a good chunk of florida that will be dealing with it along with the winds. look at the large wind field that is expected. damaging winds expected over 40 miles an hour. you will notice over 58 miles an hour as we head towards tomorrow and then continuing across much of the southeast. our weather picture is much quieter. we do have some showers across the pacific northwest. we're going to see high pressure rebuilding. temperatures going up the next two days. live doppler seven showing you the
