finale in that building. and i can see there were 47,000 fans earlier. looks like it's thinned out, but really, nobody wants to leave. chris >> yeah, larry. no one wants to leave. and what a moment. it was here today. and how fitting. the a's win this game 3 to 2. the all star closer mason miller finishes it out. just a day full of emotion. and the favorite part for me was after the game when mark kotsay addressed the crowd. you still see some fans hanging on. they do not want to leave a place that means so much to them and generations of a's fans throughout their family history, and all those types of things. there are people out here. security guards are still out here as well. we saw a little bit of some unruliness, but nothing too crazy today, which was thankful for everyone involved. it was a pretty clean baseball game throughout, but as i mentioned, mark kotsay, the manager who also played in green and gold during his playing career, he had a chance to address the crowd with a very passionate speech and it was a really heartfelt speech and he
4:01 pm
told us after the game that he had some help. he went out with his wife last night in center field and had some time to reflect, and then put his thoughts on paper, and he delivered a very heartfelt speech, which ended with a chance to let go. oakland is here, mark kotsay after the game, a32 win on a very historic day here at the coliseum. >> and today was an emotional day all around. from the time i drove in, like we talked about to right now. and i'm still kind of reeling right now. so the focus during the game helped eliminate those emotions. and here they are again. this is where home began. and this is hopefully where home finishes. yeah. i couldn't be more proud to represent this organization on this day. and you know, be able to honor it in a way that we did with the win. >> so the a's will finish the season in seattle and inevitably on to sacramento next season. but mark kotsay was asked about sacramento and his thoughts on
4:02 pm
that. he said it's new. we will address that after the final out in seattle. but they want to take some time to really soak in this moment. we had a chance to talk with a lot of players. schilling told me. that speech was one of the coolest things he's ever seen, and to have the fans be completely silent, to listen to his words and then burst out in the let's go oakland chant, he said. that gave him goosebumps. >> mark kotsay is a really good dude who was put in an impossible situation, and he made the best of it. today. i salute him because there's a lot of stuff behind the scenes that's gone on and he's he's plowed through it and tried to put the best product on the field that he could. thanks, chris. >> thanks, chris. in fact, let's listen to what kotsay had to say on the field to fans right after the game. >> i'm going to keep this short because i don't really know if i'm going to be able to make it through this. to the staff who've dedicated their lives to the oakland a's, especially those who aren't coming with us. >> i am forever grateful and

feeling mixed emotions. they are happy for the win. but they are also very sad knowing that they lost their beloved team and they are also losing their jobs in some cases. again, a lot of people are wondering what's going to happen next now that the oakland a's are leaving and what it will mean for the oakland landscape. now for the final game ever in oakland for the a's, fans packed this place in the coliseum staff delivered, and so did their beloved team. this is how things looked soon after the a's beat the texas rangers. we know the fans turned out one last time to show their support, but it's the employees who have been here since the very beginning to show their unwavering support during each and every home game. now, after the big win, we heard celebrate good times blasting for one last time and this final farewell so difficult for so many people. you hear people shouting in the background, the guy walking by saying, yeah, they cheated us. but again, hundreds of state employees expect to lose their jobs with the a's when the team leaves oakland, and many won't have severance pay. many of them may not have health care benefits back here. now again, we talked to coliseum employees
4:09 pm
and they are very mixed about what is happening here today. a lot of them have been with the team for decades. we spoke to one man who has been working for the oakland a's for 49 years. i asked him what he's going to do next. he says, you know, maybe retirement, but he also hopes that he might be able to continue working here at the coliseum with the next teams that come through. i spoke to another young man he's known as ice cold kevin bo. he's a beer vendor that we heard in other stories. he's been working here for 13 years. i asked him what he plans on doing. he says, you know, he's just going to go with the flow. he may work in san francisco at chase with the giants. he says he may go down to anaheim. he may go up to seattle. he says he's just going to go with it. so that's the latest live here. we'll send it right back to you. >> that's all you can do, suzanne. thanks. and we have more in-depth coverage of the a's end of an era. you can find it on our website, abc7 news.com, including the full version of larry's now viral response to a's owner, john

howard terminal project seemed close to reality. >> well, it has to be a proposal we agree with and that works for our business. and, you know, we laid out one that worked. the city had a different one, and it needs to achieve the goals we need financially to make sense. >> but just as oakland officials felt they were close to a deal, current owner john fisher pulled the plug and decided to move the team to las vegas. fisher stripped down the roster to cut expenses and drove diehard fans away in droves, would sell the team shirts popping up all over the country. >> he found a team. >> fisher was so universally despised by fans and players, he won't do interviews he's almost never seen in public unless he's pitching politicians to give him taxpayer money for a new park. >> we believe that by coming to las vegas, we're going to be able to get out of this idea that the a's have to let their best players go prematurely. that's a goal that's been our goal since the very beginning,
4:39 pm
since we were working on a new stadium in the bay area. >> the proposed move to vegas has been a calamity marked by repeated embarrassment, like photoshopped ballpark renderings and a financing plan that still has yet to be revealed. whether the a's ever make it to sin city is unclear, but their next stop will be sacramento. playing in a minor league park perhaps for three years, the a's will follow the raiders and warriors out of town, leaving oakland without a major pro sports team. generations of loyal fans will see their team ripped away, left only with the rich history of their beloved franchise. stay in oakland. >> stay in oakland. stay in oakland

as the team played its final game at the oakland coliseum. painful farewell for so many as the team took the field for the final time in the town. they won. they beat the rangers three two. now, a few days ago, team owner john fisher finally addressed the fans, apologizing for the team's departure. and i recorded my thoughts about fisher's letter and described it as a work of fiction. listen now. john, you're a serial penny pincher. you've destroyed your family's great name and legacy because of your cheapness. as for the statement about loyal a's fans, quote, i wish i could speak to each and every one of you individually. end quote. seriously, john, we've been trying to interview you for years, but you always choose to remain invisible unless you're begging politicians for public funding and then you're out in

front in las vegas. and then i tore up his letter. i remember that. but i want you guys to jump in. you already heard from me. i will have some closing thoughts, but who wants to go first? >> i can start. i guess if no one else has. you know, i'm one of those people where it's been so long that it's like, okay, we'll see if it happens. we'll see if they leave. and now it's finally here. i don't think it's really hit me. it was such a big part of my childhood growing up here. my dad, you know, played baseball his whole life. he played at yale like, baseball was huge for him. so growing up, he used to always take us to both a's and giants. games like that was our thing. that was the thing we did with dad. and it's just one of those memories that is always going to be in my heart. and it's one of my biggest memories i have with my dad. fortunately, i still have him with me, but i don't know. it's just like part of my childhood is just going away. it's so. it's so weird. i can't

even sometimes i just can't wrap my head around it. it's just sa. it's sad. >> i think it's i mean, i've only been to the a's a few times and i always looked around and thought, wow, this place could be amazing if they put a little into this stadium, if they, you know, freshen it up and then it became, wow, if they only invested in the players and got a few more players, it was always the potential of what could be larry, i guess, and just kind of the heartbreak of not quite getting there. i can only imagine for a long time fans, like i said, i'd only been a few times, but when you have fans who love you so much through thick and thin and mostly thin, and then you love them back, yeah, that's a tragic thing. >> you know, i went to the last game they had of the bay bridge series there. it's like, no frills at that ballpark, but just looking around at the fans, they have so much heart. they love their team so much that i didn't feel like i needed the frills, but i don't know.
4:46 pm
>> do you want to jump in with a thought? yeah, it's. >> i mean, it's sad either way. >> larry, i've been with my family and, you know, it's just so much fun to be there. and the fact that they're going away after all these years, and they were on a roll in the beginning when the team first started, which was many years ago, we realize that. but it is sad either way. >> i have this much glimmer of hope that john fisher will be the consistent owner that we've seen, and he'll bungle sacramento and vegas, and it's not over yet. it's not over yet. that's what i'm clinging to at this point. all karen will know if that feeling in her chest is afib... or just the end of a stressful day. the city hall insiders have a formula: grow the system, exploit the system. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders.

to talk about a delicious reason to get up early is the founder and the chef at early to rise. we welcome andrew mccormick. andrew, this platter that you have put together for us is absolutely just miraculous. and i this this donut is calling out to me right now. i mean, this is a work of art. it should not be eaten. it should just be framed and sent to the smithsonian. but we're going to eat it too. yeah. no, we are going to eat it. yeah that's for sure. >> talk to us, andrew, about, like, doing everything from scratch. how is that even possible? >> uh. well, i mean, we pick our horses and ride it. i mean, we uh- know what we're good at and we just, you know, have a really good recipe for hollow bread bagels. uh- etc. but some of
4:50 pm
it's more complicated, like our bacon. it took us two years to get a license to kieran, smoked out ourselves in-house and we do that in huge uh- 250 to 200 pound batches and it takes two weeks to cure. it takes a while, but you know, everybody likes bacon. that's never going out of style. so, you know, we feel pretty comfortable committing some some time towards figuring it out. but is this sandwich your most popular dish during the weekdays. that's we actually only have that during the weekdays. but i want you guys to have that because it's where a lot of the menu comes together for me. like that's our homemade hollow bread that we also use for our french toast at the restaurant, and it also has our homemade bacon, too. and it's just really, really tasty. and it's just a great way to enjoy a lot of the things that we do. >> so, yeah, looking at this menu early to rise menu, it's like comfort food to me, right? >> you have shrimp and grits and ham steak with creme fraiche and gravy, some potato pancake. i feel like these are the basics that we love. and with the twist. >> yeah. for sure. i mean, honestly, you know, the menu is
4:51 pm
not. has very few surprises. we're not big on big garnishes and a lot of, like, you know, stuff like that. i mean, it is a basic menu that we put an awful lot of time and work into. i mean, we buy the menu takes three weeks to get that bacon on the plate, you know, so it's, yeah. and then you mentioned the butter earlier. that's a labor of love. we spent years getting the recipe together for that. and, yeah, we actually do all our recipe development through, blind tasting with our customers to make sure that what we end up with is something that they really want to eat. >> oh, my gosh. >> stop the presses. >> the donut. right. >> the donut. oh, i didn't try that connoisseur. >> yeah. and this is like the hawaiian malasada. that's like so real close. >> real close. yeah. or a german berliner. there's like a lot of those donuts are real similar and they're super good. >> so the mashed potatoes are super flavorful, amazing. >> oh, yeah. oh, those are actually grits. but i'll forgive you. >> oh, yeah. i was gonna say i didn't get mashed potatoes. you fooled me. i was like, sounds good. and then make the bacon.
4:52 pm
>> they can buy the bacon. it looks like, because there are instructions and such. oh that's awesome. >> yes. yeah. we have we can sell that. we have that for retail sale too. so if you like the bacon, you can bring some home. so yeah. but actually i'm glad you brought up the grits because that's a, that's a real special thing. i'm from columbia, south carolina, and, those grits are actually milled in my hometown, and we're actually super lucky to have those to work with. and you also be enjoying that over our shrimp and grits, which is the other thing you'll have, which i grew up eating. it's one of my most favorite things to have in this world. my mother used to make it for me. it's like i grew up having that on sundays. you know, when the family used to go out for breakfast and just sharing that with everybody here, i'm kind of surprised at how popular grits are in san francisco. yeah, i mean, we get all the oh, my god, we sell so much grits. >> we love comfort food. >> yeah, and we're out of time, andrew. but you got to tell me. i understand you have a background in michelin starred kitchen, right? where was that? >> i worked at quince, pretty close to you guys. and also at john george in new york, briefly
4:53 pm
for my internship. and the. yeah, i'm so no wonder. >> thank. thank you. andrew. i'm so glad we're out of time because i want to eat the donut. all right. >>
