>> it's the end of an era. let's put it that way. >> i didn't know it was going to be sad. >> the team in oakland. that's what we're celebrating. we love you. >> love your a's. >> and with a tip of the hat to the a's, the staff and the fans bid farewell to the stadium in oakland that has been home to the team for the past 57 years. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. when you see it like that, it's really hard to believe in so many ways. just a range of emotions in oakland today, as a sellout crowd of 46,889 watched the athletics win one last game at the coliseum. >> now, even more than an hour after the final out, fans are still soaking in the day and the last of their beloved team they don't want to leave. >> we have abc seven news team coverage with sports anchor chris alvarez on the field for reaction from the team, and suzanne phan talked to a's employees, and anser hassan caught up with fans. but let's begin with abc seven sports director larry beil, and i'm
5:02 pm
just glad they won today. that's a nice little feather in the cap. >> yeah, last night was kind of a downer because, you know, there wasn't a lot of energy and people had that, like the just the glazed eyes look, you know, but really emotional day at the coliseum for the finale in oakland for the a's. they've been calling oakland home since 1968. emotional week ending today in fitting fashion, with the a's winning three two. they beat the rangers. we'll show you the highlights. final highlights from the final home game and here we go. rickey henderson, dave stewart teaming up to throw out the ceremonial first pitches. three two a's in the ninth final out. mason miller gets travis jankowski to ground out. a's win, three two, in their final home game. they'll finish up with three in seattle. the celebration ensues. lots of hugs. the fans, they wanted to stay. they they wish they could still be there right now. but you know, at some point you got to go home. we're not letting chris alvarez go home yet. not
5:03 pm
just yet, chris. but give me your thoughts and the and the emotions that you felt. >> yeah. larry, the emotions i felt. i had a unique experience to actually take bart, this morning to get here, because i was so worried about how bad the traffic was going to be and the people getting here so early. you saw the pictures of people literally parked up in the wee hours of the morning to get in and get here first. and i had an opportunity to be with the fans, to kind of feel the emotion, to overhear what they were talking about and both the sadness and the excitement of coming to the game. even one fan mentioned, hey, did you hear that one? abc7 anchor he really got after the owner he was that was well received on the bart train. larry, i can tell you that. that's something i will not forget. and then once i got in the stadium, everyone was here. the media, it felt like a playoff game, a world series game. you go into the game, there was the marine layer of the of the clouds, and then by the time first pitch opened up, the skies opened up and had a beautiful day for a baseball game. and ultimately the a's won three two. all kinds of emotions as you see some of the top
5:04 pm
moments here, rickey henderson and dave stewart throwing out the first pitch and those green jerseys with oakland across their chest. that was cool. that got a huge rise out of this crowd of nearly 47,000 fans. barry zito sang the national anthem and he crushed it. and there was a flyover. and just so good to see all the green and gold. and then, of course, the signs, the emotion, the tears. and luckily, at the end of the day, the a's win the game three two. and here's some reaction from the green and gold after one last victory at the coliseum. >> the only hype was just, you know, a few, distractions during the late innings. and, understandably, you know, those were you know, it wasn't a full on raider game, but, i mean, you know, just all around today, it just felt special for like almost 47,000 people here. >> the energy was, you know, crazy. it felt like they were behind us the whole game. it was awesome. and to get that final out and here, you know, the crowd go wild. it was really
5:05 pm
cool. >> i mean, it's an honor that i think any, any pitcher would love to have. and, you know, i think just being able to say that and you know, have that for the rest of my career, no matter where it takes me, you know, that's always going to be a moment i look back on and, you know, treasure, see people getting emotional. >> and yeah, that hits you hard because i think there's really, really good people here. who, like i've said, who care about us as players. but also as people. and to see them hurting, you know, definitely gets in your fields a little bit. >> and you can really tell from the players postgame. but then also seeing them pregame, they were taking extra time to take pictures or sign autographs. they know how much these fans appreciate them and what they do. and that oakland across the chest. i thought it was very fitting they wore those jerseys today. those those kelly greens, those nice kelly greens with the oakland across the chest. i thought that was symbolic as the a's won the game three two larry. and, it's just sad because i was at that raider game, that raider finale. and it got kind of ugly at the end. and that's what mark kotsay was kind of referring to. a's fans, for the most part, very classy, had a couple of guys that kind of
5:06 pm
messed around in the ninth inning, but other than that, it was just a sad ending, but a happy ending with the win. >> yeah, there's some knuckleheads running around on the field, but speaking of the field, you got to do what a lot of other people did. just go back 50ft, get a water bottle and scoop up some of that coliseum dirt and that's, you know, a memory that you'll have forever. all right. we'll have more with kris coming up later on. i got to finish with one story about rickey henderson. i've covered rickey for an eternity. rickey is unfiltered at all times. so ann killion of the chronicle asks him, you know, are you sad? and rickey goes, i can't be sad. i have too much money. exactly. i was just like, not today, rickey, not today. but but he's he's real all the time. so i saved that money. and that's where he made his money. exactly. >> so it's all so, so surreal. it didn't hit me that the raiders had really left until i saw them playing in las vegas.
5:07 pm
right. >> it's true. yeah. it's. and now oakland has no major professional sports teams which is a shame. it's a shame because it's not the fans fault you see them turn out. they could have had 47,000 all the time. no. >> all right. thanks. >> all right. >> well, as we said earlier, it was a sellout crowd at the coliseum today. almost 47,000 46,889 fans. >> abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to a few of them about today's game, and he's there live now for us. hi answer. >> hey, ama and dan. for years people wanted to know how this was going to end. well, now we know the a's win, but they're heading to vegas and it's been a tough end for fans. behind me you can see some diehards waiting for players to leave, many of the fans slowly making their way out, trying to take it all in, knowing that this is the end. some admitting they ugly cried for the first time in a long time. >> i cried for the first time in a while. it was an ugly cry, when katie started that final let's go oakland chance it it just it just hit that they're leaving. they're not coming
5:08 pm
back, and that they're just not going to be around anymore. >> it's brutal. >> i mean, it's devastating in a lot of ways. so it's not easy to take. it's you know, still kind of surreal and still sort of holding out some glimmer of hope that fisher will screw it up again. >> it's a sentiment we heard from a lot of fans. then we spoke to dave pomeroy. he was at the last kansas city a's game that they played before moving to oakland, and now he's here dealing with another a's team, moving again. >> it brought back memories of when we lost the kansas city a's in 1967, and i'd been going from early in the 1955 season, which was the first one after philadelphia. >> so you really are a baseball fan? >> oh, yeah, i would say so. >> a lot of baseball fans, a lot
5:09 pm
of a's fans will have more fan reaction coming up at six. reporting live anser hassan abc seven news. okay joe, thanks so much. >> and in addition to the fans, today was really an emotional day for stadium employees. many have worked at the coliseum for decades. >> they have. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan joins us live from the coliseum as we continue our team coverage and their stories. suzanne >> larry. ama. indeed. what a bittersweet day for so many of the coliseum staff here. not only are they losing their beloved team, many of them are also losing their jobs. let's go oakland for one last time, fans packed into the final a's game at oakland coliseum, and beer vendor kendrick thompson, otherwise known as ice cold kenny ball. thompson has spent the past 13 years working at the coliseum. he followed his step dad's footsteps and became a vendor here. he said he fell in love with the game, the culture and the work. >> i know i'm going to cry real soon. i feel it coming. i just
5:10 pm
almost had a moment. i'm trying to bite the bullet as long as i can until the ninth inning. >> although thompson is losing his job, he says he'll be okay because he'll go where the work is at other stadiums and in other cities. >> not a lot of people can go to every stadium like myself and a few others. a lot of them. this is the only spot they can go to. they can't go to giants, they can't go to chase. >> it's so disappointing. but i am semi-retired. >> concession stand worker delinda horton says she and other employees are taking a big hit. nearly 600 jobs could be lost, including 358 game day seasonal employees. >> they denied us severance pay. the earmark we had asked them, and they said no. >> horton, who lives in sacramento, hopes to find work there when the a's leave oakland and playing sacramento temporarily opens late thursday afternoon. a bittersweet ending. fans and employees got the win at home they had hoped for, but the a's are still leaving oakland one last time. employees are closing their doors, cleaning up and signing out.
5:11 pm
luzon byrd, an usher at the club level at the oakland coliseum, has had a long career with the a's. >> this will be my 49th year. it's been a good run. a lot. a lot of good memories. >> the memories are gone. the team is leaving. >> and that last employee we heard from again, kendrick thompson, aka ice cold kevin bo, he says he's going to look for work at chase center. oracle park, perhaps another city. we're live in oakland tonight. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> all right. thank you suzanne. >> well, take a look at this video from sky seven. just about 30 minutes ago, as those thousands of fans attempt to make their way across the pedestrian bridge from the coliseum to the bart station. now we don't have final ridership numbers from today, but bart says yesterday's ridership was more than 211,000. that's breaking the 200,000 mark for the first time since the pandemic. you know, ridership has been so far down on bart since the pandemic started. today's ridership is sure to be
