a's playing at the coliseum. but here's the good news. they won. they won. they pulled it out. yeah. good morning. on this friday, september 27th. >> let's begin with a check of the weather with meteorologist drew tuma. >> all right. here we go. we're heating up. it's going to feel a lot warmer today compared to yesterday and the day before. we have clear skies out there. the lights are sparkling in san francisco this morning. a live look outside from sutro tower. you can see we have great visibility all the way over to the east bay hills. we have a lot of sunshine in store today, so this morning you look at current sky conditions and we're pretty much clear across the board, which is a huge difference compared to yesterday morning. remember all that cloud cover to start out thursday? well this morning we will have clear skies and sunshine once that sun is up here close to 7 a.m. so temperatures right now low 50s to the low 60s. that's how we're starting out today. now inland forecast. we warm up into the 90s. back into the heat again. lots of sunshine today. mid 90s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. it's going to feel warm today. look at this

sunny skies low and mid 80s. later on this afternoon. so dress for summer today. you can take a pause on that fall wardrobe this afternoon and then along the coast it will be sunny and temperatures upper 60s to the lower 70s. let's check in with frances. see those drive times this morning? >> all right. we're checking out with the traffic maps. the overall maps this morning. you can see it's green except in the north bay. there is going to be a trouble spot out there. unfortunately, early this morning, close to after midnight, there was a fatal accident where a car hit a pedestrian. so northbound 101, a sigalert in effect right now between railroad and 116, if you're traveling in the northbound direction, you'll get off at railroad. you may want to consider old redwood highway to get back on. right now, traffic is not affected in the southbound direction. it's also a good ride across the bay bridge for folks heading into san francisco. no roadwork on the skyway, and it's fine on the lower deck and a live shot of the golden gate bridge where there is no fog right now across the span. amanda. >> all right. frances. thank you. vice president kamala

harris will be back home in the bay area this weekend. she's making one more fundraising stop in san francisco before election day. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live with the details. and, lena, this will be her second visit to the city since going to the top of the ticket. >> that's right. vice president kamala harris will head back to san francisco tonight after a visit to the border. she is expected to attend another fundraising event tomorrow afternoon at the fairmont hotel. barricades are already going up around the fairmont. this is the same location where she held a fundraiser last month. the former san francisco district attorney pulled in more than $13 million for her campaign at that fundraiser, making it one of the most lucrative events of her campaign so far. around 700 people attended that event, including tech executives. governor newsom, house speaker emerita nancy pelosi and more. according to the san francisco examiner, tomorrow's fundraiser will be significantly more affordable than her last event

here. the cheapest ticket is going for $500, which is $2,800 less than the august event. vice president harris met with ukrainian president zelensky yesterday, vowing her support for ukraine. today, former president trump is set to meet with him live in studio. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. an emotional farewell for fans of the oakland a's. nearly 47,000 fans packed the coliseum to say goodbye to the team. some fans finding it hard to leave as the game ended, sticking around to say goodbye to the players. >> it was heavier today for sure, the last few games there was a little bit more jovial kind of tone to it. today was just you felt it as soon as you walked in the stadium. i mean, there was a lot of heaviness when kotsay took the field that got me, you know, definitely wiping some tears away on that one. >> as you know, they are going to las vegas, but in the interim, they'll be heading to sacramento. but many fans tell abc seven this was their final

goodbye. minutes after the game, a's manager mark kotsay took to the field with a message to fans there are no better fans than you guys. >> you guys >> thank you all for loving the game of baseball. >> the team finished with the win. the final score 3 to 2 against the texas rangers and you saw there fans had an emotional farewell, but so did the hundreds of coliseum employees who are now left with uncertain futures. >> nearly 600 jobs could be lost without the a's at the oakland coliseum. 358 of those would be seasonal game day employees. some of the workers have been there for decades, falling in love with the game and the culture. many employees say they are semi-retired or hope to follow work at other stadiums. we spoke with a few who described facing an uncertain future. >> tonight, a severance pay. the

air mark. we had asked them and they said no. >> aramark, who she just referred to as the company that provides benefits. union officials say the company claims all benefits would stop at the end of the a's season. employees would also lose any health care benefits. the sfgate reports there are ongoing contract negotiations between the union and aramark. they also found some coliseum employees have been offered work across the bay at oracle park. >> the ending of the oakland a's may feel like a funeral for many fans, and one brewery actually did host awake. i mean awake with beer, but still awake. people got together at line 51 to say their final goodbyes. they had a tombstone pin giveaway for the first 200 fans, and it was sponsored by last dive bar, which was selling a bunch of merch at the event. not all sad. they did bring out a dj and some barbecue. you can catch all of our coverage of the a's final game at the coliseum on

tuesday afternoon, the owner tells abc seven he taught his dog, xena to let herself out on the balcony for fresh air. he clarified the dog did this while he was at work, so in this situation, the dog was not let out and then forgotten outside. after the owner got a call from his leasing office saying the dog was outside, he rushed home but couldn't save her in time. we spoke with an animal rights group about a bystander's rights to rescue an animal in distress. in this case, xena was on the fourth floor and someone would

have needed to trespass. >> california's right to rescue bill is specific to rescuing animals you see overheating in a vehicle legal necessity says you can break a minor law to prevent a greater harm, like saving someone's life, human or otherwise. but the necessity defense hasn't been applied to non-human animals yet. >> investigators confirm xena was alone to let herself out, and there were no previous calls about animal welfare to that apartment. >> dog owners in san francisco are raising concerns about taking walks at crissy field in just the past ten days, there have been several coyote attacks and at least three dogs have been killed. the pet owners say it's part of a growing trend of increased aggression from the local coyote population. they want more to be done. abc seven news reporter tim johns spoke to one dog owner and shares her story. >> three days a week, you can find meredith lyons and her three year old dog, willie nelson, walking along the water at crissy field. lyons says her

walks are normally uneventful. that was until tuesday, within two minutes of him jumping out of the car, a coyote came out of the bushes, went for the neck, tapped back because of the collar. blind says she had heard coyote encounters were on the rise near crissy field, but never expected it to happen to her, her shock getting even worse. just hours later when she and willie encountered another coyote on their walk. the very next day, blind says this time the coyote started following her as she ran down the beach. >> i tripped, i was on the ground, the coyote starts circling me, i'm screaming and yelling for help and covering. >> willie, blind tells me eventually, a park ranger heard her screaming and was able to scare the coyote away. but after two incidents in the span of two days, blind says she's traumatized. >> oh, i was terrified. i was like, is this how it ends? >> the golden gate national recreation area, which runs crissy field, says at least three dogs are believed to have

been killed just within the past ten days, prompting dog owners to take extra precautions. >> i would say the large percentage of the commercial dog walking network is telling their clients that you have to buy coyote vests. otherwise, i'm not going to take your dog. >> the nra says they are taking these incidents seriously. on thursday morning, their team was out here at crissy field putting up several signs. there. also advising people if they too have a coyote encounter. >> you want to make yourself big. you want to make a lot of noise. if you have rocks or sticks, you want to throw it at the coyote. you want to make the coyote uncomfortable being around people. >> as for lyons, she says after their experience, she and willie will be changing up their routine. >> i did read that coyotes are afraid of water and willie's an amazing swimmer, so i think we're just going to stick to water exercises for the time being. >> in san francisco, tim jonze, abc seven news. >> abc seven's spencer christian

was in new york city to help honor an abc news colleague. broadcasting and cable inducted new members into its hall of fame. spencer went to accept the award for one of his mentors and very close friend, phil bayouth, who wasn't able to attend. phil is a longtime abc executive who was the executive producer of good morning america. when spencer was the weather guy there. among the people inducted into the hall of fame last night. abc's george stephanopoulos, espn's dick vitale and deborah o'connell, the president of news group and networks for the walt disney company, which is the parent company of abc seven. and a very special honor for a member of our abc seven team. abc seven news reporter leon melendez received the dolores huerta award for her many contributions to local journalism. >> i don't think she gets recognized enough for the work that she does, and the value that she brings, but more importantly, the barriers that she removed to allow for other women not just latino women, but

women of color in general, to be a part of this world that typically was not open to so many of us. >> and last night, san francisco mayor london breed and other city leaders co-hosted the 2024 latino heritage month celebration and awards ceremony. as leon accepted the award, she shared a story about when she knew she wanted to get into journalism. >> so i ran back to my teacher, to the class and she said, where have you been? >> you're late. you have a presentation. and i said, well, i just interviewed pedro. >> juan soto. >> and she said, that's impossible. everybody knows he doesn't give interviews. >> and i said, but i did. at the end of the interview, my teacher said to me, leon, is that what you want to be a journalist? and i said, is that what you call it so, yes. and here i am

efforts to get funding for two giant pandas. new letters sent by the mayor to some of the city's wealthiest tech leaders, including openai ceo sam altman and salesforce ceo marc benioff. in those letters, she proposed partnerships with their respective companies. one idea was to use ai to monitor the panda's behaviors. another was to create a panda smart home to help them get better acquainted with their new homes. she also offered them the chance to help with the naming process. her goal is to raise $25 million, though some estimates are much higher. however, the mayor's office tells our media partners the sf standard, both declined to help fund the project. >> learning about a big boost in sales after san francisco's first event in the state's first ever entertainment zone, an estimated 10,000 people showed up to last week's oktoberfest celebration on front street. one bar telling our media partner sf standard sales were up 1,500%

past ten days. >> and number six, there's a fatal accident in the north bay northbound 101, where a pedestrian was hit at railroad. traffic is fully closed. old redwood highway is your detour for the time being. >> number seven, san jose is getting a brand new fire station. officials broke ground on fire station 32 at the corner of olander court and felipe avenue. the fire department says the 7700 square foot, all electric facility will serve the greater santee and little saigon neighborhoods. construction is expected to be completed in 2026, and that groundbreaking came as san jose firefighters gathered for a protest. the local firefighters union is speaking out against former san jose mayor sam liccardo, who is now running for congress. they say he's made the city less safe. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has the story. >> reporter tension between members of san jose firefighters local two, 30 and former san jose mayor sam liccardo. liccardo is currently running

for the district 16 congressional seat. the firefighters say liccardo supported measures that led to the firing of firefighters and loss of police officers. >> we're down 500 cops. he laid off 49 firefighters. we're struggling to do our job. and these are the repercussions from his actions and his policy. >> at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new san jose fire station thursday, he responded to the firefighters. >> it's important for folks to get the facts and not to have this revisionist history created by political players. >> liccardo, citing numbers that showed the police department was expanded by over 200 officers and that he left the city with one of the lowest crime rates of any major u.s. city. certainly, yes. >> we lost more than 500 police officers before i became mayor. when i became mayor, we worked very hard to bring people together at the table to work through differences and to rebuild our public safety departments. >> still, the firefighters say that as a city council member, prior to being elected as mayor, liccardo refused to work with first responders. >> if you have an employer in a

in the upper 60s to the lower 70s. let's check in with frances and see those drive times this morning. >> all right drew. morning, everyone. starting off in the north bay where there is a sigalert traffic alert for a fatal accident in cotati. it's in the northbound direction, but all lanes shut down at railroad closed up to 116. so keep this in mind. and if you're heading northbound direction, minor slowing old redwood highway would be a good detour for you. also, some roadwork cleared as you make the ride on westbound 80 near hilltop, and traffic is starting to recover. as you can see here, it's looking good. traffic flowing well in both directions as you continue the ride on westbound 80. highway four to the toll plaza right now is 23 minutes, and so far, no delays at the bay bridge. reggie aqui. >> thanks, francis. breaking overnight hurricane helene made landfall in florida, already being blamed for multiple deaths as the storm continues its trek inland toward georgia and south carolina. this morning, it is leaving behind a path of destruction. abc news reporter reena roy live in tampa for us this morning. reena >> well, reggie, good morning to you. i can tell you that storm

surge was the main concern here in tampa. and now it is a reality for so many people waking up here. we were actually woken up here in the middle of the night at our hotel because of flooding on the first floor. there was an emergency alarm that went off, and it was because of storm surge. and i just want to show you just how high the water got. it has now receded. but take a look at that white wall. that is the water line there you see dirt and debris left behind. all of this from record breaking storm surge about 5 to 7ft of it here in tampa. overnight hurricane helene slamming florida, roaring ashore south of tallahassee as a category four storm. >> you have these 140 mile an hour winds hitting here in north florida. this is going to extend. i mean, you're going to have hurricane force winds that are going to extend across a couple counties to the east and west. >> the national weather service issuing a rare extreme wind warning for the tallahassee area, calling hurricane helene an extremely dangerous and life

threatening situation, warning people to take cover and to treat the conditions as if a tornado was approaching. >> this is shaping up to be a catastrophic hurricane for florida's big bend here in tallahassee. the rain it has been consistent for hours now, and the winds are starting to intensify in fort myers beach, marine deputies wading through floodwaters pushing a boat to help rescue people in tampa. >> roads turned to rivers. the area hit with strong bands of wind and rain. this video appearing to show transformers exploding. this storm is raging. >> i have flooding so bad you can't even imagine. >> near saint petersburg, the lobby of the all seasons hotel under water on nearby interstate four, a highway sign fell onto a vehicle, killing the driver. hundreds of people in taylor county, florida, in the bull's eye of the storm, told emergency officials they did not evacuate. the sheriff's office now asking residents who defied the mandatory evacuation order to

a home on lincoln avenue. investigators say the suspect shot himself during a standoff with officers. but survived and was taken into custody. he is now at a hospital receiving treatment. new details about the cal fire firefighter suspected of setting several fires in the north bay. state officials have confirmed the man was previously incarcerated and participated in a firefighting program. this was while he was serving time for a 2016 fatal dui crash. by the end of 2020, he had served his time and had completed parole. then last friday, he was arrested in healdsburg for the arson allegations. a spokesperson for the california department of corrections said in part, we strongly condemn the actions of any individual that endanger our communities and undermine the valuable contributions of fire camp participants. >> this was it nearly 47,000 people packing the coliseum for the last a's game in oakland.

>> all right, frances, thank you. this morning, a major concern for the u.s. economy. 45,000 port workers along the east and gulf coasts are threatening to go on strike next week. analysts warn a walkout lasting longer than a week could lead to major supply chain disruptions. anything imported could be delayed, including produce, toys, alcohol and vehicles, and parts. the port workers union is demanding higher wages and a ban on automated cranes, gates and trucks. the u.s. maritime alliance, representing the ports, claims the union is not bargaining in good faith. it has filed an unfair labor practice charge in hopes of getting the union back to the table before next tuesday's contract deadline. >> today, boeing union members are set to meet with the company's executives. federal mediators will also be there during contract negotiations. this meeting is the first they've had since september 18th. the strike, now going on its third week, has already cost boeing more than half a billion

dollars. and people say it's starting to impact supply chains, the impact being felt across all kinds of companies, many with withholding shipping until the strike is over. >> you start disrupting that. you start disrupting a lot of small companies and small factories, and they can't necessarily turn on a dime, especially not in this kind of society. >> union members refused boeing's latest offer, which included a 30% wage increase and more contributions to union and company 401 k's. the ntsb is issuing urgent safety recommendations for some of the newer boeing 737 and 737 maxs. the agency is pointing out a manufacturing error that caused a plane's rudder to malfunction. the issue was first reported earlier this year on a united flight. according to the pilots that day, the pedals were stuck when landing in newark. the faa says united airlines is the only u.s. carrier affected and is already replaced. the parts in question. >> a plan to clean up part of

san francisco's hunters point shipyard of radioactive and industrial pollution, has been announced. >> it's being led by representatives from the u.s. navy and environmental protection agency. the shipyard has long been called a toxic hotspot after contamination from heavy metals and pcbs were discovered. the underwater site, called parcel f, has remained untouched by the larger cleanup effort of the entire shipyard that began back in the 90s. >> our first responsibility is to complete the cleanup in a way that ensures long term public health and safety, and protects the local environment. removing, treating and capping sediments will be a positive step forward. >> earlier this year, the navy acknowledged its activities at the shipyard from 1948 to 1960 contributed to that soil and groundwater contamination. the estimated $32 million sediment removal will take the navy just under two years to complete, with work set to start in 2027.
