this afternoon as we get going on this friday. comfortably cool out there. we're generally starting out in the 50s, but those temperatures do warm pretty quickly this morning, so inland forecast we have sunshine from the get go already into the 80s before lunchtime. and then we're going into the 90s for daytime highs. so it will feel a lot warmer compared to yesterday. we're about 15 degrees above average around the bay shoreline. it's warm. we have lots of sunshine today, temperatures. we're going back into the 80s, so it will feel well above average for this time of the year. along the coast. you see, this morning we do have a little bit of cloud cover, but look at that sunshine come out pretty quickly. so along the coast it will be a beautiful day. if you're thinking of going close to the ocean. daytime highs will go into the upper 60s to the lower 70s so mild there as well. let's check in with frances. see those drive times this morning? >> all right drew. morning everyone. there's a fatal pedestrian accident in the north bay. a pedestrian was hit on the freeway northbound 101 between railroad and 116. that is closed right now. so, as an alternate, you want to head over to old redwood highway. but you can see

traffic is slow for the detour. plan on extra time in the southbound commute direction, though. no delays at this point, and we'll show you one on one. in the south bay. headlights are north 101 8-80 across your screen. really? no major problems else elsewhere in the south bay on the peninsula and the right across the bay bridge, though, getting crowded with metering lights on, but no major trouble into san francisco. amanda. >> all right, francis. thank you. a weekend of campaigning and fundraising will bring vice president kamala harris back to the bay area tonight. she's flying in later before an event tomorrow. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live. lena, what else is on the agenda for the weekend? >> well, vice president kamala harris will head back to san francisco tonight after a visit to the southern border in arizona. she's expected to attend another fundraising event tomorrow afternoon at the fairmont hotel. before that happens, we're expecting to hear a plan outlined by vice president harris to crack down on fentanyl smuggling and human trafficking. she's expected to push for more border agents and resources. yesterday, she met with ukrainian president

zelensky, vowing her support for ukraine. today, former president trump is set to meet with him after describing the country in bleak terms yesterday. >> i will work to ensure ukraine prevails in this war. >> i believe i will be able to make a deal between president putin and president zelensky quite quickly. >> the secret service is already preparing for the vice president's homecoming visit to san francisco, with barricades already going up around the fairmont hotel. this is the same location where she held a fundraiser last month, pulling in more than $13 million, according to the san francisco examiner. campaign officials wrote on the invitation that harris will spend the majority of her campaign's final month in battleground states. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you. lena. the final farewell for the oakland a's filled with emotion as fans packed the coliseum yesterday, nearly 47,000 people showed up

to say goodbye to the team. some found it hard to leave as the game ended, sticking around to say goodbye to the players even with the team heading to sacramento. this was the final goodbye for many fans. >> it was heavier today for sure, the last few games there was a little bit more jovial kind of tone to it. today was just you felt it as soon as you walked in the stadium. i mean, there was a lot of heaviness when kotsay took the field that got me, you know, definitely wiping some tears away on that one. >> it's somber. it's very sad, you know, a piece of your childhood piece of your adult life. my son saw me grabbing my a's gear today, and he. he got to go sunday, and he said, oh, i want to go to the game today with you. i'm like, well, today's a. today's dad's game. >> so many people spent so much time here. like there's not many things you invest that much time. you come that many times in a row in a year. uh- get to know a bunch of players. people like people that sit around you, the ushers, the vendors,

you guys. >> you guys >> thank you all for loving the game of baseball. >> the a's one 3 to 2. they'll finish their season in seattle this weekend just as fans had an emotional farewell. >> so did the hundreds of coliseum employees who are now left with uncertain futures. nearly 600 jobs could be lost without the a's at the oakland coliseum, 350 and 358 of those would be seasonal game day employees. some of the workers have been there for decades, falling in love with the game and the culture. many employees say they are semi-retired or hope to follow work at other stadiums. we spoke with a few who described facing that uncertain future tonight. >> a severance pay, the earmark we had asked them and they said no. >> aaron mark, who she referenced, is the company that provides benefits union

officials say the company claims all benefits would stop at the end of the season. employees would also lose any health care benefits. sfgate reports there are ongoing contract negotiations between the union and aramark. they also found some coliseum employees have been offered work across the bay at oracle park. >> the ending of the oakland a's feels like a funeral for many fans, and one brewery actually did host a wake awake with booze. people got together at line 51 to say their goodbyes. they had a tombstone pin giveaway for the first 200 fans, and it was sponsored by the last dive bar, which was selling a bunch of merch at the event. they brought a dj, had some barbecue, so it wasn't all doom and gloom. while the oakland a's era is ending, their journey to sacramento will start next season, the team will eventually try to make their way to las vegas, but they'll be calling west sacramento home for the next three years. it could mean some good news for small businesses there. they're already prepping to do some rebranding to welcome the team to the area and the city of west

come, the pope not exactly getting a warm welcome overnight on his latest international tour. and south bay firefighters protesting against a candidate running for congress there, saying sam liccardo once refused to work with first responders, then dog owners in san francisco are on edge because of coyote attacks at or near cris grow the system, exploit the system. take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders.

dogs have died. one resident says her dog was attacked on a walk. they both were able to get away. the very next day, the pair got attacked again after a coyote followed them. >> it tripped. i was on the ground. the coyote starts circling me. i'm screaming and yelling for help and covering willie. >> a park ranger heard the cries for help and scared off the animal. dog walkers are insisting on dog owners purchasing protective vests for their pets. park rangers say if you encounter a coyote to make yourself big, make a lot of noise. they also say throw things at it. now to a story we've been following about a dog dying of heat stroke in pleasanton. we're learning new details about how that dog ended up on the apartment balcony. tuesday afternoon. the owner tells abc seven he taught. he taught his dog zenit to let herself out on the balcony to get fresh air. he clarified that she did this while he was at work. so in this situation, the

dog was not let out and then forgotten outside. so after the owner got a call from his leasing office saying that the dog was outside, he rushed home, but he couldn't save her in time. we spoke with an animal rights group about a bystander's right to rescue an animal in distress. in this case, a dog was on the fourth floor and someone would have needed to trespass. >> california's right to rescue bill is specific to rescuing animals. you see overheating in a vehicle. legal necessity says you can break a minor law to prevent a greater harm, like saving someone's life. human or otherwise. but the necessity defense hasn't been applied to non-human animals yet. >> investigators confirmed the dog was alone to let herself out, and there were no previous calls about animal welfare to that apartment in the south bay. san jose firefighters are protesting against former mayor sam liccardo, who is now running for congress. they say he's made the city less safe by supporting measures that led to the termination of firefighters and

the loss of police officers. firefighters say that as a city council member before becoming mayor, liccardo refused to work with first responders. >> you have an employer and a city that respects you and shows you some dignity. they're going to want you to stay and ultimately, when he was in that position, that never happened. >> yes, we lost more than 500 police officers before i became mayor. when i became mayor, we worked very hard to bring people together at the table to work through differences and to rebuild our public safety departments. >> liccardo is facing off against state assembly member evan lowe. the firefighters union is endorsing lowe and say they will need strong support from whomever wins. >> if you only work out on weekends, it may be enough to provide the same health benefits as people who spread out their exercise. a new study found so-called weekend warriors had the same lower rates of heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure as people who broke up their

workouts throughout the week. researchers say it's the total volume of physical activity rather than the pattern that matters. the cdc recommends people 18 and older do at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week. >> okay, but that's okay. that would be a lot of exercising over two days. >> yeah, 75 minutes. yeah, an hour. hour and a half. that's a lot. >> i'm not doing 75 minutes. >> i thought it was like 30 minutes spread across the week. yeah. plus your weekend. >> you take that much time out of your weekend to work out. >> but as they were saying, any physical activity, they're saying moderate. >> i know francis is like, i could do it. okay. >> i mean, i can't do as much now, but a lot of my aerial classes are easily an hour and a half long. so you do what? yeah. >> 90 minutes is always trying to get everyone up on those flying trapeze. >> flying trapeze classes. that's a very fast warrior. >> i'm not even there yet, but i'm getting back up to it. yeah.

sizzling. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we'll see a one day heat spike today before the weekend cools off. back to average with morning clouds the sun both days. then next week there's that string of summerlike warmth kicking off on monday. guys. >> all right drew, thank you. now let's turn to ginger zee. she's live in florida tracking halloween for us. >> how did it go overnight into into this morning ginger. hey >> yeah. amanda. reggie. so as expected and unfortunately a verified forecast. the tampa bay area was supposed to get 4 to 8ft of surge. we did get it 5 to 7ft of record surge. and that's the problem is that people here haven't ever seen a surge to this level. so at least in front of these homes, these boats were pushed in from more than 200 yards that way over a four lane causeway. and the boats are pushed into the homes, meaning that the water also goes into the homes. so there's extensive water damage, not just on treasure island boulevard here, but all the way down to the beaches. sand piled up, debris everywhere, and this is just one community out of thousands that

are impacted by this storm. so we've got teams on gma all the way up the coast. victor's up in perry where it was terrible with the tree damage and the high winds. we've got faith abubey in atlanta where they've had a flash flood emergency. we've got teams in asheville north carolina. flash flood emergency. we've had to have a lot of teams. let's just say helene making that record landfall. the big bend has never seen that strong of a storm. and the impacts are widespread. so we'll be covering that. and i'll track it because we'll be dealing with it through the weekend. >> that has an incredible picture that you have behind you. this morning. what are you the most concerned about now when it comes to helene? yeah >> yeah, i think it's just not people not getting their cars in southern appalachia and eastern tennessee. right just knowing that when you're in a flash flood emergency, first of all, you usually see that for one county, not entire sections of states or multiple sections of states. so i just hope that that is taken seriously. but even up to indianapolis and cincinnati, they're looking for wind gusts and high wind alerts for 40 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts. so

sunshine on our way already into the 80s by 11 a.m. and then later on this afternoon mid and upper 90s for daytime highs. we're set to sweat around the bay shoreline. we'll find daytime highs in the mid 80s that is well above average for this time of year. and then along the coast we do have a little bit of cloud cover. it's patchy right now, but even along the coast we'll get full sunshine this afternoon. close to 70 for daytime highs. let's check in for frances and see those drive times this morning. >> yeah, we're going to start off with some slow drive times this friday morning. westbound 580 tracy to dublin is 38 minutes. so it's not as bad as a typical weekday. and also southbound 101 san rafael to san francisco, 17 minutes westbound for out of antioch to concord. that's a 21 minute ride. we had an earlier traffic alert in the north bay, northbound 101. a pedestrian was hit a fatal crash at railroad avenue. it was closed at railroad avenue. but i'm hearing lanes have just been reopened. in the meantime, traffic folks have been detouring to old redwood highway, which is slow, but it looks like there's no need for that detour as lanes are

reopening. and if you're heading towards the bay bridge, metering lights are on from the toll plaza to san francisco at 17 minutes. here's a look at the slow ride. also for folks heading to the richmond-san rafael bridge. traffic heavy approaching the tolls reggie aqui. >> breaking overnight, hurricane helene made landfall in florida. now she has weakened to a tropical storm, but she's already being blamed for multiple deaths as the storm continues its trek inland toward georgia and south carolina. >> this morning, it is leaving behind a path of destruction. abc news reporter reena roy is live in tampa for us this morning. reena >> well, reggie and amanda, now that the sun is up, we should be able to get a better look at the damage in this area across the state and really across the region. as you said, it's impacted, you know, georgia, north carolina as well. we had significant flooding here at our hotel behind us. but thankfully the water has started to recede and soon cleanup will begin. overnight hurricane helene slamming, florida roaring ashore

south of tallahassee as a category four storm. >> you have these 140 mile an hour winds hitting here in north florida. this is going to extend. i mean, you're going to have hurricane force winds that are going to extend across a couple of counties to the east and west. >> the national weather service issuing a rare extreme wind warning for the tallahassee are, calling hurricane helene an extremely dangerous and life threatening situation, warning people to take cover and to treat the conditions as if a tornado was approaching. >> this is shaping up to be a catastrophic hurricane for florida's big bend here in tallahassee. the rain. it has been consistent for hours now, and the winds are starting to intensify. >> in fort myers beach, marine deputies wading through floodwaters, pushing a boat to help rescue people. in tampa, roads turned to rivers. the area hit with strong bands of wind and rain. this video appearing to show transformers exploding. this storm is raging.

>> i have got flooding so bad you can't even imagine. >> near saint petersburg, the lobby of the all seasons hotel under water on nearby interstate four, a highway sign fell onto a vehicle, killing the driver. hundreds of people in taylor county, florida, in the bull's eye of the storm, told emergency officials they did not evacuate. the sheriff's office now asking residents to defy the mandatory evacuation order to write their name, birthday and important information on your arm or leg in a permanent marker so they can be identified. now, even though helene was downgraded, it still caused major issues further inland. reggie aqui. >> reena roy live for us in florida. this morning. thank you. and we have some breaking news to pass along for you. this morning. oscar winning actress maggie smith, known for her roles in the harry potter movies and downton abbey, has died. her sons announced the news just moments ago. a cause of death has not been released. she won

two oscars in her storied career. she was 89 years old. the star of stage and screen, i mean, really, i was just looking at the list of movies that she's been in and plays. she's been in the west end and on broadway, and it's an incredible career. so again, actress maggie smith dying at the age of 89. >> new details on the gun used in the shooting of 40 niners. rookie ricky pearsall in san francisco's union square. the arizona man who owned the gun reported it stolen earlier this week. the tempe police department tells the chronicle the man filed a theft report. in it, he said he last saw two guns, including the one used in the shooting about three months ago. both guns were bought legally. it's unclear how the gun made it to san francisco. the 17 year old boy accused of shooting pearsall is charged with attempted murder. the da's office is pursuing the case in the juvenile justice system. >> 216 year old boys arrested in connection to a deadly shooting in downtown san francisco could

be tried as adults. the teens were arrested in april after a 17 year old was shot and killed just outside the powell street bart station. the chronicle reports da brooke jenkins asked the judge yesterday to transfer them to adult court. if that's approved, it would be a first for her administration. >> a man police say shot and killed two people in napa is at a hospital recovering this morning. the shooting happened yesterday on lincoln avenue. investigators say the suspect shot himself during a standoff with officers. he survived and then was taken into custody. he's now at the hospital receiving treatment. it's unclear what led up to the shooting. new york city's mayor, eric adams, could be making his first court appearance today. the mayor was indicted earlier this week. he faces numerous corruption charges. among the allegations are that he accepted illegal campaign contributions and free trips and gifts. some of those gifts included free hotel stays and discounted airline tickets to places like

2025 for flights in 2026, according to southwest, 80% of its customers preferred assigned seats. other future changes coming include possible overseas flights. the airline has been under pressure from shareholders to increase profits, and thinks this change could bring more customers. >> now for your morning money report, a deal for directv to acquire its rival dish could be finalized as soon as monday, if that deal goes through, it would make directv one of the largest pay tv distributors. directv has been trying to buy dish several times over the years, even as early as 2001. bloomberg reports the companies are close to a deal. some regulators are worried satellite tv's future is too bleak for this deal to proceed. now we take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway. and as you can see, we're in positive territory, up about 160 points. >> an update to a story we've been following about a message in a bottle with bay area ties

found by a group of hikers in australia. we first brought you this story earlier this week. take a look at this. we have photos from the bay area family who sent the note during their vacation in fiji. they shared these photos from their 2016 trip when they sent their message off to sea. last week, a hiking group found the bottle while doing a beach cleanup on the coast of australia. they got in touch with the bay area family and are hoping to reunite with them and their note. >> this next story is not creepy at all. there's a giant baby doll in an english village very normal. it's part of a campaign to teach kids about the environment. the tallinn city council shared images on its facebook page, saying the doll, named lily, is more than 27ft tall. who is this person? >> very excited. it's giving raggedy ann. >> it's giving raggedy ann and raggedy ann is giving raggedy ann. >> yeah. >> so i guess the kids talk to lily about the future of the planet. i she can open and close
