contest that put our own diane lim to the test. good morning everybody. it's saturday, september 28th. frances is here tracking your weekend forecast and a cool down it comes. yeah, definitely. you'll notice it especially for inland areas. that's going to be some relief. and right now take a look at temperatures. there's quite a range from some upper 40s to mid 60s around the bay area. so in san francisco it's 59. and here's what you can expect with today's forecast. plenty of sunshine all day long. it's clear in the inland areas already in the 70s by 9:00. and then low 90s this afternoon around the bay, though, it's probably going to take until midday. we'll see some clouds moving in the next few hours, temperatures warming up into the upper 70s by this afternoon, and then at the coast with some fog moving in right now, it's only going to get partly cloudy and partly sunny this afternoon with temperatures in the low 60s, and then get ready for a big warm up heading our way. coming up with the accuweather seven day forecast, stephanie. all right, frances, thank you. now to your

voice. your vote this morning. vice president kamala harris is in the bay area for another visit. this is likely the vice president's last visit to san francisco before election day. but her arrival began with one of those only in san francisco moments. you'll know what i mean. here's abc7 news reporter lauren martinez. >> vice president kamala harris makes what could be her final visit to california before the election. a little after 830 friday evening, the vp touched down at sfo as her motorcade arrived at the fairmont san francisco, an autonomous waymo got stuck making a turn. a san francisco police officer had to manually drive the vehicle out of the way. >> nowhere else in the city. nowhere else in the world. we're the only people come to see that. so we saw it. >> we did reach out to waymo and haven't heard back yet. earlier in the day, harris made her first trip to the border in arizona in years. harris expressed a tougher stance on illegal immigration. she spoke

with local border patrol leaders as they walked along the wall. >> there are consequential issues at stake in this election, and one is the security of our border. the united states is a sovereign nation, and i believe we have a duty to set rules at our border and to enforce them. >> the election is less than 40 days away. harris is spending the night at the fairmont hotel. she has a private fundraiser at an undisclosed location. on saturday. the hotel is the same spot where she held an event in august, raising more than $13 million for her campaign, according to the san francisco examiner. tickets for saturday's fundraiser will be 500 to $2800. >> i think that this makes it affordable to at least another group of strong supporters, who maybe were priced out of the prior events. >> bill james is a santa clara county democratic party chair. harris's fundraising tripled trump's in august. james said

the significant money raised is being used to lean in to media markets and battleground states. >> a lot of people, in fact, everybody has formed an opinion of donald trump. people like him or dislike him. there aren't many people out there who don't know about him and are yet to form an opinion. but for vice president harris, she's benefited from the novelty of entering the race late. a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of positive energy. but i think some voters in the middle still have the question. you know, who is kamala harris? is this a person i can see as my president? >> in san francisco, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> meanwhile, former president donald trump campaigning in battleground michigan in what was supposed to be an event focusing on manufacturing jobs. trump spent a significant amount of time slamming harris for her border visit. >> she went to the border today because she wanted to see if she could. she's getting killed on the border. she didn't go there for four years now. today she shows up. >> trump also spoke about his

meeting with ukrainian president zelensky. the former president said he'll quickly end the war in ukraine but did not provide specifics on how he'd do so. cbs news shared the rules for the upcoming vice presidential debate. microphones will not be muted when the other person is speaking. the network says they still reserve the right to mute the candidate's microphones, but otherwise they will be on. similar to the presidential debates, no opening statements, no live audience, and no props or notes. tim walz will be placed on the left and jd vance on the right. the debate is this tuesday, and you could watch live coverage right here on abc seven starting at 5:00 on tv. disney plus and hulu. on the peninsula, now, a 16 year old is recovering from a stabbing that happened at south san francisco high school. the teen was taken to a nearby trauma center yesterday for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. abc seven news spoke with a student who did not see that stabbing happen, but witnessed

the fight leading up to it, and what happened after there was a fight before a teacher got pushed over. >> so i was helping him try and, you know, get him up and stuff like that. and i hear kids behind me saying, there's a stabbing. i see kids running towards where it happened. they put the kid in a golf cart and rushed him to the main office, where an ambulance came. >> the student tells us he did not recognize the victim and believes they attend a different school. police say a 14 year old suspect is in custody. a small win for california's reparations efforts. governor gavin newsom signed a bill into law formally apologizing for the state's role in slavery and decades of anti-black policies. the legislation was part of a package of reparations bills introduced this year, but was the only one that passed this cycle. advocates for reparations say the apology does not go far enough. >> it feels somewhat like a slap in the face for the governor to sign this apology bill the day

after he vetoed one of the bills, specifically sb 1050, that would have provided restitution and compensation for black americans who had their property taken by the state of california. >> lawmakers say they'll try to bring the other reparations bills back next. legislative session. a reminder you can watch the abc7 originals documentary california's case for reparations. it dives into the groundbreaking work of the reparations task force, examining bills that came out of it. it's now streaming on demand on the abc seven bay area app. now to this what's to come of the oakland coliseum now that its team has left the nest? the oakland roots soccer team will play at the coliseum in 2025. but what comes next falls on the imagination of the african american sports and entertainment group, which now owns the site. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has a closer look at the vision. let's go oakland. >> for the last time ever,

chants of let's go oakland! fill the coliseum at thursday's final home game. the franchise is moving to las vegas, so what comes next? >> oakland will get major league sports again. there's no question in my mind. the market is too large. it's too wide open. the media market is too big. >> ray bobbit is co-founder of the african american sports and entertainment group, which now owns the oakland coliseum site. he says the future trends toward sports and entertainment tourism venues surrounded by retail, arts and culture and housing, and hopes of revitalizing east oakland with jobs. >> we know that in district six and seven, there's only about 2000 full time jobs, most of which are at the airport and at the coliseum site. and so just think about it. if we could create up to 20,000 jobs at that site, you're talking about a life changing scenario for that entire area. >> bobbit says this will be a ten year long project. the oakland arena will stay. planning for the rest of the site will take another year and

a half, 3 to 5 years before they break ground on early stages of the project. the coliseum specific plan is already in place, which bobbit says means they won't be delays due to environmental reviews and the like. >> we plan on having this development move very quickly because the region needs it. >> bob says they're generating interest from all major league sports. he points to the nfl and la as examples of what can happen in oakland. >> i didn't ever think i'd see 20 years with los angeles without a team, but i did, and now they have two. >> how can you bring in more revenue? uh- stadiums are often the centerpiece of these relocations, so there's a lot of questions for a local group in terms of how would you attract a new team here? >> matthew atencio is co-director for the center of sports and social justice at cal state east bay. he says oakland is a strong sports market, but points to tough competition from cities like seattle for an expansion team. and though the coliseum is available, it's in need of massive upgrades. he

believes this could be an opportunity to build something from the ground up instead of another billionaire parachuting a team into oakland, a team that's maybe more community based, >> a bit more entrenched in the voice of the people here. in many ways, that's maybe the future of pro sports. >> alameda county still has to sign off on one more document, which bobbit says will happen by the end of the year. in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> the final home oakland game here for the a's helped bart hit post pandemic ridership records this week, three days in a row, the agency saw more than 200,000 riders on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. thanks to all those fans heading to the coliseum, there were nearly 225,000 trips on bart thursday alone. a post pandemic record. still, that's about 53% of the pre-pandemic weekday average. now, the oakland police department says thursday's sell out crowd was

largely well behaved. just four fans were arrested for public intoxication, two were ejected by coliseum security after running onto the field, and police also said they responded to some reports of fans trying to take home pieces of the ballpark. >> and we are aware that there were some notable attempts of vandalism at the coliseum. they were considered very minor and there was no known actual merchandise that left the building due to good security. >> police say there were no injuries to anyone during the final game. for all of our reporting on the a's final game at the coliseum, you can head to our website, abc7 news.com, and there you can find a recap of all of those special moments. and frances, one of them, were fans kissing the coliseum as they were leaving the stadium. certainly a very sad week for oakland fans. >> yeah, definitely a sad week. and right now i want to hopefully make you feel better because the temperatures will be milder this weekend with some

ordered because of an outburst during his arraignment after prosecutors requested that he remain in custody. he yelled about world events and blamed the government. mcguire faces at least seven years in prison if convicted on the federal charge. turning now to the fire danger from devices with lithium ion batteries. they're in everything from our bikes to scooters, computers and even cars. abc seven news reporter luz pena is following this story, analyzing data from the san francisco fire department. this is lithium ion batteries. >> it happened in 30s. that's what the owner of this san francisco home said off camera about the fire that started on thursday inside his garage. the culprit? his leaf blower with a lithium ion battery that was charging the battery becomes so hot, so quickly, it releases the poisonous gas. in this case, no injuries were reported. but this is an example of a growing number of fires traced back to these batteries over the last

four years, the san francisco fire department has seen a significant increase in the number of lithium ion battery fires due to these devices. we looked at the data going back all the way to 2017. that year, there were two fire incidents reported from rechargeable batteries that went up to 15 incidents in 2021, and a person died in one of these incidents in 2022. so far, there have been 15 fires caused by these batteries. this year, the fire department projects at least five more by the end of the year, when the batteries are damaged, they can charge in improperly and cause an explosive fire. the owner of warm planet bikes recommends for people to check their batteries are ul certified. >> they've been designed and tested to be sure that they don't explode. >> some of these batteries and chargers are expensive, leading to some people buying knockoff brands. >> they're just being pumped out in small factories all over asia and imported as fast as they can. there's a gold rush going on and they don't care about safety.

>> in san francisco earlier this year, the board of supervisors voted to create safety standards for some devices powered by these batteries. but those in this industry want higher intervention. >> what we need to do is prevent the importation of nonstandard and substandard electrical systems. >> here's what the fire department recommends you do if the battery starts to bulge or change colors, or you notice that the scooter, the bike, the wheelchair, the device has an odor to it or a discoloration to it, you need to not charge it and notify the manufacturer immediately. the san francisco fire department recommends to only use the original charging cables and avoid leaving batteries unattended for long periods of time. also, setting a timer on your phone to disconnect the batteries once fully charged. all this can make a difference. louis pena, abc seven news. good. >> today, assembly member evan lowe is hosting a public safety town hall for santa clara county. community members can attend to hear updates about

their neighborhoods and weigh in on public safety issues. it's happening at the sunnyvale orchard pavilion from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. county sheriff bob johnson will also be there to answer questions. the town hall comes as we inch closer to election day. lowe is running against former san jose mayor sam liccardo. caltrans announced a portion of highway one that's been closed since february will not reopen this year. work at region slide right near big sur, has closed off about seven miles of highway one. caltrans says that surface cracking and land movement is delaying the repair project further. work originally paused in august due to cracks in the slope. the agency said work will resume once crews and equipment can be positioned on stable ground. a huge crowd returned for another edition of the sunset night market here in san francisco. there was plenty of food, art and vendors. and as you see here, abc seven news

year. the last two years, people living in alameda said they could hear the music and even the vibrations all the way from san francisco. organizers told the chronicle they're vowing to be quieter this year. some of the changes you'll see include one of the stages being rotated away from the water. there will also be more shipping containers up to block sound from travelin, and performances will also end a little earlier on sunday night than in years past. and francis, one of the big headliners is rufus diesel. >> yeah, i hear you're a big fan. i know we have. >> we had a little song we were going to play treat you better, one of their headliners, but they're based in sydney. i know there's a huge following here in san francisco, so a lot of people are very excited. >> yeah, so it is going to be a great evening, but you'll definitely need a layer in san francisco because it will be partly cloudy this morning. and then this afternoon we'll get some sunshine before the clouds return. once again, it's a very typical setup. here's a look at live doppler seven satellite radar image clouds off the coast are moving in, but there is a

lot of fog in half moon bay. visibility down to zero right now, so be careful if you're driving through the area and you can see the fog rolling in from the coast. and this past hour, it's going to continue to roll in in the next few hours. but then we'll have mostly sunny skies this afternoon everywhere except at the beaches in san francisco. right now it's 58. oakland and hayward 61. san jose 64. redwood city 57. half moon bay 55 degrees. with all that fog and you'll see some of that fog here across the golden gate bridge. temperatures in the north bay have dropped in santa rosa down to 49 degrees right now. petaluma 50. and we're seeing mid 50s napa, fairfield, concord and livermore at 59 degrees. so here's what you can expect for your highs today. there's going to be quite a range from 60s at the coast to 90s inland. so temperatures have definitely come down anywhere from 5 to 10 even 15 degrees in some areas. so look for those clouds to stick around. plenty of sunshine everywhere else.

right now from upper 40s like in the north bay, santa rosa and sonoma to even some mid 60s out there like san jose currently at 64 degrees. and here's today's forecast. so plenty of sunshine inland neighborhoods all day long warming up into the low 90s by this afternoon around the bay will get clearing by midday. temperatures in the upper seconds and at the beaches with the fog rolling in, we'll get partial clearing by midday and then the clouds return. so temperatures will only stay in the low to mid 60s for our beaches. but then get ready for a big warm up and i'll show you that with the accuweather seven day forecast. stephanie. >> all right francis, thank you. developing news now. hurricane helene is no longer a hurricane this morning, but the powerful storm is causing extensive damage across the southeast. it roared ashore as a category four storm and has dumped massive amounts of rain. and the winds have toppled countless trees and knocked out power. right now, at least 44 people have died so far. a public health emergency

was declared in georgia, and one was already declared for florida on thursday. it produced the highest storm surge ever recorded in the tampa, saint petersburg area. abc news reporter ike ejiochi is in tallahassee with the aftermath. >> helene wreaking havoc across the south. the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall on florida's big bend. the destructive storm claiming the lives of more than 40 people, leaving more than 4.6 million homes and businesses without power throughout the south. a tornado ripping through rocky mountain, north carolina, injuring 15 and destroying businesses. a survivor says he was inside one of the restaurants when it happened. >> we kept getting them. the tornado alerts and i went up to go get my plate, and when i seen the chimes going around and everything started spinning, so i ran to him and grabbed everybody i could and we went uh- went up onto the table. we

were lucky. >> in asheville, a home scene washed away in the flood waters. the national weather service says failure of the lake lure dam is imminent due to the heavy rainfall. people nearby asked to evacuate the area. more than 50 people rescued from the rooftop of this tennessee hospital. due to the rising floodwater. >> we started to evacuate immediately when we were told to do so. by the time the ambulances got to the hospital, the hospital was completely blocked off. the water had moved in that fast. >> high water rescues are underway in florida. taylor and dixie county have been struck by three hurricanes within the last 13 months. they are once again left to rebuild as helene's remnants continue to slam the southeast. more than 1500 search and rescue crew members are on the ground here responding in florida. the national guard, they've also been deployed for storm search and rescue response all across the southeast. ike ejiochi, abc news, tallahassee. >> overseas now israel killed

hezbollah's leader of more than three decades, hassan nasrallah. he reportedly died following israel's airstrikes on southern beirut in lebanon, where thousands of civilians have been displaced. now you're looking at new video showing smoke rising from beirut. this morning after being pummeled by those strikes. hezbollah also launched dozens of projectiles across israel. prime minister benjamin netanyahu cut his u.s. visit short to return to israel in a speech at the united nations, he vowed israel's campaign against hezbollah would continue. on capitol hill, a two week hearing on the implosion of the titan submersible is now over, but it could be months before the coast guard makes a final report. we learned yesterday of a shudder felt by the crew on the ocean gate support ship. at the moment it lost contact with the titan. a coast guard captain testified that information was never shared. they also said that knowing that information could have drastically impacted the

search efforts. a former ocean gate employee also testified about comments made by ocean gate ceo mr. mccoy. >> is that a direct quote? >> he said i would buy a congressman and make basically the problems would go away at that point in time and that that is direct and that will stand in my mind for the rest of time. >> the coast guard will now analyze the evidence and issue its recommendations at a later date. the titan sub imploded last summer on its way to the titanic, killing all five people on board, including ocean gate ceo. happening right now, crews of the next space mission are prepping to take flight. the mission, called crew nine, is set to help bring the boeing starliner astronauts home from space. they plan to take off around 10:00. crew nine will only have two members on board. the remaining two seats are open for the starliner crew to return home. nasa suni williams and butch wilmore have been stuck at

per year plus room and board, the university is now launching a program to help some incoming students. abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains. >> for many, it's a dream to attend santa clara university, long beach high school, or riley. gore hopes to make that dream a reality next fall. >> well, i mean, obviously it's so beautiful here and i have a few family members who work here and who have gone here, so i'm just touring and seeing like the more inside scoop. and i just love it. i love it here. >> but to reap these benefits, students have to get past a high sticker price. what might it cost? an incoming freshman. >> incoming freshman? i think the total like room and board and everything is, like close to 80,000. >> would it be even more interesting to come here if there was free tuition? >> yes. of course. i feel like free tuition is just. it's a sell for anyone. >> and now it's possible it's known as the santa clara university promise. clearing the path for students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, to become a scu bronco. >> this takes the barrier out of

can i afford it? and those students who, again, have spent so much dedicated time and commitment and their families, you know, we want to give them hope. >> beginning next academic year, first year students who qualify for cal grants or graduated from the national cristo rey network of catholic college preparatory high schools can earn free tuition for all four years. the scu promise, with the help of state and federal financial aid, will knock down the remaining costs for qualifying families. >> those who come from middle low income families, where cost is, is definitely a barrier that if they qualify for the pell grant program, that they have possibilities at santa clara to then not have to question where the other funding may come from. >> for incoming students, the early decision deadline for applying for the promise is november 1st, and regular decision applications are due january 7th. a chance at earning an education at one of the premier universities in

california. now a possibility for all at santa clara university. dustin dorsey, abc7 news. >> today, after five years of construction. the l taraval light rail in san francisco's sunset neighborhood is ready to return to service. mayor london breed joined transit leaders thursday for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the project's completion. two miles of the taraval street corridor between west portal to the zoo have been upgraded. people can now begin riding the light rail between the embarcadero station and the san francisco zoo. happening tomorrow, the folsom street fair returns to san francisco, so get ready to see a lot of leather. the event draws thousands of people into the soma neighborhood every year. as always, you can expect food, drinks, live music and booths to shop the folsom street fair is from 11 a.m. to six and frances 100,000 people are expected for this. >> yeah, despite the leather, it's going to be more like sweater weather for tomorrow

do you remember this guy? we told you about him before. this is brier. he's a rescued mountain lion cub and he is training to get comfortable around veterinary staff. but he just wanted to play today. brier is getting his second round of vaccinations this week before he's socialized with other mountain lions. so cute. happening today, the annual pacifica fog festival kicks off on the peninsula. the two day event is described as a whale of a good time. fog fest celebrates the city, attracts visitors and raises funds for local community
