p-g-and-e's planning to shut off power to prevent fires. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. we are 12 hours out from that heat advisory in effect for three days of dangerous temperatures. so right away, let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel tracking those rising temperatures. how hot and how long it's going to last. >> absolutely, diane. and that heat that is coming is prompting that heat advisory. as you mentioned it is going to be dangerous. dangerous enough that there is a risk of heat related illnesses. that's why that heat advisory goes up at 11 a.m. for the entire bay area tomorrow morning. it runs until 11 p.m. wednesday. there's moderate to major heat risk with those temperatures soaring into the low 90s to mid 100 seconds. you could clearly see the bay side and inland communities shaded in oranges and reds, indicating that moderate to major heat risk. looking at a sampling of our temperatures tomorrow 97 in santa rosa, it's going to be heating up close to 100 degrees in concord, livermore, 95, san jose 94. in redwood city, with

the rising temperatures comes rising. fire danger. even though the winds are not going to be strong, it's an offshore wind, a downsloping wind that tends to dry out the atmosphere. so we will be going into the moderate to high category in some of our inland communities. and the air quality, as you can imagine, will be declining as spare. the air alert has been issued for your monday moderate to poor air quality for the bay area for tomorrow. i'll be back with a full look at your temperatures for not just tomorrow, but how long this intense heaing to bui. >> dion all right, sounds good. sandhya thank you. meantime, 13,000 p-g-and-e's customers from across 13 northern california counties could lose their power from a planned public safety power, shut off. happening as early as tomorrow. here is the impact to the bay area in alameda county, 346 customers are on alert. contra costa county with 286 customers in the north bay, 268 in sonoma county, and 140 customers could

lose power in napa county. the utility says conditions are ripe for potential danger. >> we're seeing in the next few days. breezy offshore winds, low humidity and all these conditions sort of come together to create elevated risks for wildfires, p-g-and-e's customers tell us they are bracing for that impact. >> many say they're becoming used to these shutoffs. >> there would probably be an issue around our meals. our refrigerator would stay cold. we do have a small generator. we keep the freezer going. if we had to p-g-and-e's will open resource centers where people will be able to come to stay cool, connect to wifi and charge their devices. >> now download the abc7 bay area app to stay up to date on our latest heat wave. you can access the forecast with the very same live doppler seven tools that our weather team uses and will also send alerts right to your phone when there are any important updates

sound now. another chaotic night of sideshows on the roads and neighbors are sick of it. police in vallejo tell us hundreds took part in dangerous displays overnight. new at 11 abc7 news reporter j.r stone talked to one couple who says the mayhem spilled from the street onto their house. >> this is what it looked like in vallejo saturday night into sunday morning. vallejo pd say they believe there were between 350 and 400 people involved in sideshows all across town. neighbors we talked with are angry and say they've had enough. >> had i known that they were doing sideshows, i wouldn't have never moved here. >> that's patricia williams. i talked with her and her husband, paul, who have now lived in vallejo for four and a half years. this is what it looked like in their front yard when the sideshows happened overnight. people, for as far as

you could see, the williams sent us these photos showing the damage done to their lights, their gutters and their roof. after people at the sideshow started climbing onto their home. >> man, we were sleeping okay. it literally woke us up. somebody could have got killed out here. hurt? you know what i mean? >> the striking point was when they were on my property, on my roof, you know, and this caused some damage that now we have to pay for it. and enough is enough. the city or the police, they need to come out. i don't care if you got two officers. you need to know where these sideshows are, because you need to put a stop to it. >> police tell me there were multiple sideshows like this in vallejo saturday night into sunday morning. they did respond to at least one with mutual aid from solano and napa county sheriff's offices. and american canyon police. no arrests were made and no cars impou least one person was hurt, but they weren't cooperative with officers. williams are upset, saying they called police at least twice. but the sideshow here still lasted nearly an

hour. vallejo pd say due to staffing shortages, officer safety and public safety, they are unable to respond to every sideshow. >> they should patrol this area more. you know what i mean? yeah, and they don't do it. they don't do it at all. >> what is the city going to do? what is the police going to do? somebody's got to do something. somebody's got to be held accountable. really. they really do. for somebody to be on my roof, i think they broke the mold because they were on our roof. i mean, how disgraceful, disgusting and disrespectful that on my roof and standing on my fence like it's the thing to do. enough is enough, and i'm tired of it. >> the williams and other neighbors have started a petition with the hope that city leaders will then put measures in place to prevent these sideshows. we did reach out to vallejo's mayor, but had not heard back from him or his staff as of late sunday night. j.r stone abc seven news. >> two people were rushed to the hospital after they were shot in

bay point late this afternoon. an ambulance rushed one of the victims to the hospital after gunfire broke out on disney circle, near harvey way in unincorporated contra costa county. that shooting happened just before six in a residential cul de sac. the conditions of the victims have not been released and sheriff's investigators did not share information about the suspect or suspects. new details now. detectives in oakland are investigating a deadly shooting during a high school. alumni picnic. police say a 38 year old man was shot at about 730 last night at defremery park in west oakland. city leaders say the mcclymonds alumni action picnic is an annual family friendly gathering with hundreds of people of all generations. they are simply outraged. a shooting happened during a peaceful event. >> it is unconscionable that someone would actually act in a way of violence in this way, to take someone's life during a party celebration, we would like to extend our condolences to our fallen alumni.

>> it's really heartbreaking to lose a member of your community who is beloved, especially in front of the entire community. >> police did not say whether the shooting was connected to the picnic. investigators say there may have been more than one shooter, but haven't made any arrests. mcclymonds high school's principal assures parents and students that the school is safe. tragedy in san leandro this afternoon. a two alarm fire inside an apartment killed an elderly man. the blaze started inside a unit at the eden roc apartments on washington avenue, just before 330. today, the alameda county fire department says two people escaped, and the man who died did not. first responders had to navigate around the tight quarters of the parking lot to get to the building apartment. >> getting in this tight corridor with a number of cars that were parked in the in the path to get to the apartment uh- caused may be a challenge for them. i don't think it causes a

delay in their response, but it was definitely a difficult to navigate through these tight corridors. >> the fire damaged four units at the complex, displacing 12 people in total. the red cross is helping those folks find another place to stay. no word yet on the cause. a country music legend with bay area roots singer and songwriter kris kristofferson has died. kristofferson was a rhodes scholar who then became a country music superstar and an a-list hollywood actor. born in brownsville, texas, his family moved to san mateo when he was in his early teens. he later owned a ranch in mendocino county. many of his songs were best known as performed by others, including me and bobby mcgee, sung by janis joplin. kristofferson went to on have a successful film career, starring along barbra streisand in a star is born. his family says he died at his home in maui yesterday at the age of 88. a cause of death was not revealed. well, time now for our abc seven news at 11. helping you get ahead on the big

stories coming this week. we begin with the countdown to the vice presidential debate. the gloves come off on tuesday when republican vp candidate jd vance and his democratic opponent, tim walz, face off in new york city. it all promises to be a high stakes debate, probably the last big event for each before election day. the entire debate is scheduled to run 90 minutes, and there will be no audience. but unlike the two presidential debates, there are no plans to mute the candidates microphones when they aren't talking. and you can watch the debate right here on abc seven. live coverage begins at five on tuesday. it is also streaming on disney plus and hulu. now, our other big advancer is big change for salesforce workers that could have impact on downtown san francisco. starting on tuesday, the city's largest employer will require the majority of its workers to return to the office. some departments will have to come in 4 to 5 days a week, while others will be required to

five people have died in the storm, bringing catastrophic flooding from florida to tennessee. florida governor ron desantis says 99% of the state has power once again after the storm knocked out power to millions last week. communities in north carolina are still cut off by mudslides and major flooding. three veterans, san diego firefighters who were driving to north carolina to help were badly hurt this morning. they were involved in a traffic collision at the texas-louisiana border and ended up with moderate to critical injuries. several first responders from the bay area are helping in the aftermath of the disaster. abc seven news reporter suzanne vaughn talked to the crews making a difference. >> everyone is very anxious and they're waiting for the phone call, waiting to help. >> first responders with the bay area's two urban search and rescue teams are watching helene's aftermath and ready to jump in. >> we're just firefighters on the on the west coast willing to help those on the east coast.

and if we get the phone call, we'll go. >> so far, california task force three, based in menlo park, has sent one member to help with relief efforts on the east coast. that's retired battalion chief carl carson of san mateo city fire. he will be almost like the liaison between the local emergency services and the task forces that are coming in. the former battalion chief responded to the world trade center collapse and hurricane katrina. meanwhile, california task force four, based in oakland, has sent two team members to florida. one to tallahassee and one to orlando. >> we have two members from our team assisting with the recovery efforts or the response and recovery efforts. chief jeff peter is in tallahassee and is liaison officer, meaning that he was at the florida state emergency operations center coordinating the fema use of resources with the state and helping them go where they were needed to be. as for acting assistant chief chris landy landry, he's a safety officer

and kuchins of san mateo is one of 15 american red cross volunteers now on the east coast. >> since wednesday, she's been managing the red cross evacuation center in jasper, florida. cutchin says this was her first hurricane, and she's exhausted. >> the day of the hurricane was a more like a almost a 20 hour day shift, cutchin says. >> it's been all hands on deck and things have been pretty unpredictable at times. >> we thought there was a possibility that there might be a tornado, and we did get a tornado warning. >> cutchens, who has helped with the red cross response in maui and in paradise, says she continues to volunteer because help is needed and will be needed for quite some time in san francisco. suzanne, fawn abc seven news. >> the future of artificial intelligence is a focus of much of our reporting here at abc seven. today, a landmark plan to manage the safety of ai died on the governor's desk. governor newsom vetoed the first in the

nation plan to set safety measures for large ai models. the bill by san francisco state senator scott wiener faced fierce opposition from the tech industry, saying it would have a chilling effect on ai development. newsom said he didn't think it was the best approach and announced a partnership with industry experts instead to develop new guardrails for the technology. now, state senator wiener shared a statement saying, quote, this veto is a missed opportunity for california to once again lead on innovative tech regulation as we are all less safe as a result. reviving our downtowns is a key part of building a better bay area. and this week, leaders in san jose could act on a plan aiming to do just that. the city council is set to vote tuesday on a set of incentives meant to lure businesses into empty office space. the proposal calls for two year exemptions on certain taxes and parking permit fees for new businesses. they would have to rent at least 2500ft■!s of space for four or

more years. and check this out a wayward sea lion made its way onto highway one on the central coast on saturday. now, that, of course, created quite a spectacle and a major traffic hazard as well. the california highway patrol, along with local firefighters and an animal rescue team, all worked together to capture the sea lion and reopen the road. we are told the sea lion is receiving care before it is released back into the wild. glad the sea lion is doing okay. i mean, maybe it knows it's going to be so hot. you know it gets that land time out of the way. >> i was going to say the sea lion wanted to get out of the way before it gets to. >> that's right. too steamy. >> yeah, yeah. no. for sure. you know, we're going to be sweating it the next couple of days. >> brace yourselves. >> yeah. brace yourselves for sure, because here's what we're expecting. here's a heat alert for tomorrow. temperatures in many areas will be 10 to 15 degrees above average. moderate to major heat risk. we are talking about increased fire danger and a spare. the air

alert. so on tuesday i do want to draw your attention to this, because the entire bay area will be in a moderate to major heat risk. so it is going to expand as high pressure starts to build in. the winds are going to start to flow offshore, and that's what's going to bring some fire danger concern. so let's talk about this 7:00 in the morning. you're thinking okay, what strong winds well up in redding. it's going to be gusty 30 mile an hour wind gusts as we head into monday evening. 20 at san francisco. it's coming out of the northeast. it's a very drying wind. and that's what's going to be concerning when you combine it with the dry fuels that are in place. this continues into tuesday as those downsloping winds continue 17 there in san francisco, 20 at kirkwood. so the humidity values that are pretty elevated right now will drop. and it's going to be a considerable drop tomorrow. single digit there in concord, 9%, 10% in napa. we head into tuesday and the humidity values once again coming down 12% in oakland, 9% in concord. you can

the night there. first responders in san bernardino county ordered a new round of evacuations today. more than three weeks after the fire first started. containment remains at 83% right now, with 42,000 acres burned. well, days after hurricane helene carved a path of destruction across five states. and the cleanup is just beginning. 95 deaths are being blamed on this storm, with entire neighborhoods still under water. president biden says he'll visit the disaster zone, but only if it won't interfere with recovery efforts. abc news reporter alison kosik shows us the impact of this powerful storm. >> helene slammed florida's big bend region late thursday night, making landfall as a powerful category four storm in steinhatchee, which took a direct hit this seafood market, now a donation center, the owner says she feels helpless. >> this is the third storm in a

year like, i don't know how much more we can take. >> miami-dade fire and rescue is in dixie county, helping with the recovery efforts. millions across the south are still without power. we're also seeing an increase in use of generators. >> so we like to remind everyone to never use generators indoors in the mountains of north carolina, as much as 30in of rain fell from above. >> you can see the devastation. >> it's heartbreaking because along this river we have a lot of wonderful stores, and we're going to be cleaning up a long time. >> asheville largely cut off by washed out roads, a lack of power and no cell phone service. the city's water system severely damaged as well. officials say they are working on getting residents the help they need. >> my staff has been making every request possible to the state for support, and we've been working with every single organization that has reached out. my promise to you is that we are very close. >> president biden has approved

disaster declarations for several states, freeing up federal resources to help with recovery efforts. >> we've given them all the everything that we have. we're on the ground with ahead of tim, so we're working hard. >> similar devastation in tennessee. governor bill lee touring some of the hardest hit areas on saturday. buildings destroyed, bridges and roadways crumbled. the remnants of helene continue to bring rain to parts of the east. those rains are light, but a flood watch was issued for parts of virginia and west virginia. alison kosik, abc news, new york. >> we'll take a look at this. this towering plume of smoke could be seen for miles around metro atlanta today. a chemical plant caught fire, sending this column of smoke just billowing into the air above conyers, georgia, about 24 miles east of downtown atlanta. the fire department says a broken sprinkler head came into contact with a water reactive chemical, and that is when everything blew up. streets have been closed,

the area evacuated and a shelter in place order issued. officials warn the smoke could stay in the air there for days. happening tomorrow a new development in a toxic legacy we've been following for some time here on abc seven. this week, experts are scheduled to survey a popular east bay park looking for signatures of radiation to understand how it may have wound up there, you have to turn the clock back to a dark time for san francisco bay and follow the paper trail. abc seven news anchor dan ashley explains they identified dri alum mud insolubles neighborhood activist sherry padgett is holding what could amount to an environmental smoking gun. >> documents that detail dumping by the former stauffer chemical company, later acquired by zeneca. the site along the richmond shoreline has been the focus of cleanup efforts for decades, but now invoices obtained by the california department of toxic substances and state water boards suggest

some dangerous materials may have actually wound up miles away from richmond. >> they had been dumping for 50 years into the shoreline, so they were looking for other places to continue to dump. >> one apparent site, the former berkeley municipal dump, pictured in a recent public presentation by city officials. the dump was also located on the shore of san francisco bay, next to the berkeley marina. finally closed in the 1980s, it was later filled in to create what is now cesar chavez park. the question today, how much industrial waste did stauffer chemical actually dump at the site? and did any of it contain unsafe radiation? while the documents provide clues, some are concerned they may not tell the whole story. >> so we don't have a lot of confidence that this is an accurate depiction of the quantity of material that was taken. it may be a hint about the types of materials that were

her most prized possession. it honored her late police officer husband. how this man reunited her with it. that's coming up this week at 1 p.m, right here on abc seven. >> fall is here. and the pumpkins are ready this weekend. the annual national pumpkin weigh-off was held for the second straight year in yuba county. more than 40 growers from around the country competed for this year's crown at bishop pumpkin farm in wheatland. about 20 miles north of roseville. the winning gourd weighed in at more than 2,400 pounds. they don't even look real, right? the grower took home more than $22,000 in prize money, with more than 3000 spectators there for the competition. >> i mean, if you look around, there's families everywhere enjoying everything else aside from this. way off. but this way off is definitely pretty awesome. >> i would say so. the world record pumpkin was set at last year's half moon bay pumpkin weigh off, tipping the scales at 2,749 pounds. this year's big competition in half moon bay is

take mark farrell's record. after receiving the largest ethics fine in city history for breaking campaign laws. mark authorized a commission almost every year he was in office. he was even caught taking donations from people he would then appoint to commissions, including a felon convicted of bribery. san francisco's challenges demand urgency, not more of the same failed insiders. nicest guys you would ever want to meet. he's a family man. his son was born in march and he seems to be that perfect dad.

but on the field, you would not want this linebacker running after you. he is powerful. he is the niners defensive leader and an absolute beast. there's a reason one of his nicknames is all-pro fred. today against the patriots warner had a pick six for the niners. first touchdown as captured perfectly by abc seven cameraman extraordinaire abe mendoza. love you abe. this somehow was just the second time warner scored a touchdown in his career. he did miss the entire second half with an ankle injury. we'll have more tests, but a lot of that was precautionary because the 40 niners were in control. everybody on the niners impressed by all pro fred. but the offense was mad that he actually scored the first touchdown of the day. >> we let a linebacker score before we got the ball in the box. that's how i look at it. but fred is the goat man. >> he's pretty good isn't he? goodness gracious. >> and that was amazing watching fred go out there and be legendary. >> i mean, that was just special. that's unique. that's hall of fame type of stuff. that
