north carolina. we are in biltmore village a popular shopping and dining enclave in asheville. it was submerged in water, leaving behind debris and a muddy mess. it stretches for millions and miles. one official describing the damage as biblical devastation. this morning the death toll climbing after helene barrelled through the southeast. the massive storm killing more than 91 people from florida to virginia. in putnam county, north carolina, wsoc capturing this scope of the damage from above. at least 30 people declared dead, dozens more unaccounted for. >> these response teams are working around the clock to make rescues, to access neighborhoods. >> reporter: the extreme floods washing away homes and bridges. >> get out of the way. >> reporter: at one point, north

carolina dot forced to close more than 400 roads, deeming them unsafe for travel. members of the national guard and relief teams from 19 states joining the search and rescue mission. >> this is an unprecedented tragedy that requires an unprecedented response. >> reporter: in asheville, many residents growing desperate. cell service and portable water aren't coming for days. >> this is apocalyptic not just for us, but the entire region. >> reporter: and one person telling abc news that it is nearly impossible to reach emergency management due to the cell service outage. >> to see our cell phones completely black out and not have the ability to allow people on their own accord to check on their loved ones. hey, look, you live near water. please leave. >> reporter: hurricane helene rapidly intensifying in less than 12 hours, making landfall in florida's big bend as a category 4 storm late thursday night, with 140 mile per hour winds.

western north carolina rattled with a separate rain system just before helene crossed the border dumping up to 30 inches of rain in parts of the state, triggering extreme and deadly flash floods and land slides. this home in marshall swept away in this river. in lake lore, homes reduced to rubble, boats and docks piling up, towns turned into waste, submerged under water. >> when you turn the corner and you see your community just full of buildings and trash and floating boat houses and floating homes, it sort of takes your breath away. a little scary. >> reporter: roads sliced in half, cutting residents off from critical help. >> there's probably 50 trees blocking my neighbor from coming out. i started helping yesterday. we got us out but the other neighbors are trapped. >> reporter: the painter family telling us they returned home to 35,000 gallons of water in their basement and their home caked in mud.

>> it's eerie. i had a pit in the bottom of my stomach the whole time. >> we're stepping on mud and trying not to fall because it's so slippery. >> reporter: authorities confirming two people died in tennessee. that number expected to climb. iriqoui county officials say more than 70 people are still unaccounted for, including steve ploy. overnight his family telling gma they found his jeep and hope he was able to climb out and survive. >> that is the hope i need right now so i can breathe again, so my kids can breathe again. his minnesota vikings won today. so i want to sit here and watch those highlights with him. >> reporter: just so heartbreaking. george, this morning there's still hundreds of roads still closed. including this one here, which means a lot of people are cut off from critical supplies. the roads are either flooded, been washed away or

they're unsafe in one way or another. there are places like this one that are still muddy and dangerous that it's unsafe to even walk around. george? >> george: faith, thank you very much. hernando beach was hit with significant storm surge. good morning. >> reporter: you can see where it looks like families spent the weekend just getting the damage from inside their homes, the debris that came up in all of that water. and moving it out to the road so they can begin the cleanup process. that is the story up and down this neighborhood here. i have to show you when we're talking about florida and living on the coast. you want the views, right? this family had it. but look this morning. you can see the gulf of mexico straight through their home. that's the damage in this area. this is a part of the big bend area that took the brunt of hurricane helene thursday into

friday. there are still about 130,000 residents here in florida without power this morning. i know we've got some images of just the damage, the complete obliteration which governor ron desantis called it. you can see before and after, some neighborhoods just wiped out. robin? >> robin: so hard to see. all right, janai, thank you for your reporting. the remnants of helene are still bringing rain to parts of the u.s., while a new threat to the gulf is taking shape. you know ginger is tracking that for us. >> ginger: everybody just needs a breath at this point, right? then we can forecast it and i can say last week we were so focused on the southern appalachian, but to see it come to fruition. when we use the word unprecedented, people have a hard time imagining what that could look like because we haven't seen it. that's what happened with this storm. right? we had days of rain in the mountains. so the blue ridge mountains, all that area we kept saying, it's not just about florida. it's not just about florida. see how that path made it up there on top of all of that, you had more than 30 inches in parts of western north carolina. in this radar image had a hard

time filling in around asheville. look, south carolina more than 14 inches. georgia had more than 14 inches. now, if you can believe it or not, it's been still raining with that tropical moisture. you can see it here the flash flood warning down in north carolina, parts of virginia. that new area in the gulf is going to happen this weekend or early next week. we'll keep an eye on it. little early to tell you exactly where, but we're all over it. >> linsey: that region, that's the last thing they need, ginger. thank you. now to emergency evacuations in georgia following a chemical plant fire outside atlanta that spewed potentially toxic smoke into the air and forced an interstate to shut down in both direction. our senior national correspondent steve osunsami is on the edge of the evacuation zone. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, linsey. parts of this major interstate, interstate 20, are going to remain closed today while authorities clean up this chemical mess. they're telling people for several miles to stay inside and keep their windows closed. more than 17,000 people east of atlanta are still worried about

returning to their homes today after a fire at this pool chemical plant forced them from their neighborhoods. the clouds of burning chemicals filled the sky in conyers, georgia, for most of the day sunday. people miles away could see what looked like sky scrapers of smoke. >> i want to ask all of you to spread the word and stay away from this area at this point. >> reporter: it was dangerous to breathe. so authorities shut down the busy interstate nearby, backing up traffic in both directions for hours. families who agreed to leave spent the night in make shift shelters. >> if you choose not to evacuate, please do not get out and ride around and take videos of what's going on. either leave or stay, but don't be wandering around the city. >> reporter: the fire initially broke out in the morning inside the bio lab pool chemical plant when water from a sprinkler mixed with a product and caused a chemical reaction. firefighters able to put out the initial flames but then the fire reignited.

>> reporter: this morning israel attacking lebanon and yemen, adding to growing concerns of a wider war in the region. israeli air force launching a large scale operation striking iranian backed huti rebels in yemen after they fired a missile toward tel aviv, this video showing the fiery remains of a power station. four people reportedly killed. israel said this is not only retaliation for the houthi attacks but an israeli official said they are also sending a message to iran. overnight the idf launching dozens more air strikes in lebanon, targeting what they said were buildings used by hezbollah for military operations. most of the sites you see have been in the hezbollah strong hold of dakia. this one happening in the central part of the city, the upper floor of an apartment building destroyed, leaving debris strewn across the area. sources telling abc news israel preparing for a limited ground

following a lot of headlines including search and rescue in the after math of hurricane helene. at least 91 people have been killed across the southeast. that number expected to rise as the floodwaters recede. also ahead another suspect in the assassination attempt on donald trump due in court this morning. ryan routh will be arraigned on attempted assassination in addition to the firearms charges he was already facing. >> linsey: boeing's talk with the union appears to be at a stand still. union representatives say the latest bargaining session broke off without a resolution. the strike is now in its third week. 12 time grand slam singles champion billie jean king has officially been awarded the congressional gold medal, making her only the 12th athlete in history to receive this honor and marking the first time ever the gold medal has been awarded to an individual female athlete. that seems surprising. certainly she is deserving.

we still have a lot more ahead including the looming dock workers strike. what it could mean to the supply chain with the holidays ahead. that's all coming up. >> george: right now rescue at sea during hurricane helene. you may have seen the coast guard saved a man and his dog from his disabled boat. gio benitez is here with how they pulled off the daring rescue. good morning, gio. >> gio: george, good morning. yeah, over the weekend, so many of us saw that unbelievable rescue video of the sailor and his dog right in the middle of hurricane helene's grasp. now this morning we are hearing exactly how it went down and the new details are just as incredible as the video itself. this morning coast guard video seen here capturing the harrowing rescue of a sailor and his dog from dangerous waves 30 feet high as a treacherous hurricane helene moves in. the coast guard spot the vessel taking on water. the sailor saying that he and his 10-year-old golden retriever gun were living on the boat and moving away from the hurricane

when their motor failed and they began taking on water. >> it was moving mountains of water every which way you turned. the waves were just everywhere you look. >> reporter: barcomb calling for help. >> i said, gun, this isn't the day we're gonna die. i'm calling the coast guard. >> gio: within minutes, the coast guard dropping a diver in the water. this video from the diver's helmet cam, both barcomb and gun wearing life vests, jumping into the sea from the sinking ship. the rescuer petty officer ted hudson telling cnn that adrenaline kicked in. >> there were 50 mile an hour winds. i had control at the whole time. it was a dangerous situation and i was trying to get out of there as fast as possible. >> gio: then barcomb and his dog were hoisted to safety in the helicopter. >> what comes next, time will tell.

take a look overhead as we show you drone footage going miles and miles of damage. one official calling the devastation biblical. this morning the death toll climbing after helene barrelled through the southeast. the massive storm killing more than 91 people from florida to virginia. our affiliate wsoc capturing the scope of damage from above. at least 30 people declared dead, dozens more unaccounted for. >> these response teams are work around the clock to make rescue, the access neighborhoods. >> reporter: extreme floods washing away homes and bridges. >> get out of the way. >> reporter: at one point north carolina dot forced to close more than 400 rooms, deeming them unsafe for travel. members of the national guard and relief teams from 19 states joining the search and rescue mission.

foot. guys? >> robin: we want everybody to stay safe when they come out. just assess what's going on there. faith, thank you very much. now more on the search for people that are still unaccounted for following the hurricane. morgan norwood is in winston-salem, north carolina. good morning from there, morgan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. i can tell you hurricane helene hits home for me. i'm from winston salem, north carolina. i can tell you the need there is dire which is why collection drives like this one put on by the winston salem regional association of realtors is so critical. they have piles of supplies they are planning to bring out there. paper towels, paerishable items, cleaning supplies. water. they will be loading it onto trucks and sending it to western north carolina. the state, they're forced to fly many of the resources out to that region right now because the roads are either washed out,

underneath water, floodwaters or submerged in mud from the land slides and mud slides there. at one point more than 1,000 people were unaccounted for. that number, according to county officials, has gone down to about 600. much of that is due to the lack of internet, power, cell phone service. many of the land lines also down. many are searching for their loved ones, waits for word from their loved ones, and their loved ones desperately trying to get in contact with them as well. >> robin: you know that all too well, morgan. as you said, this is personal for you. >> reporter: yeah, it was an agonizing wait. i endured that along with many other families, waiting to hear from loved ones. over the weekend when i was trying to get in contact with my mother, she was in western north carolina for a work conference. at last check, when we last talked with her, she was trying to get around a mud slide. that's when we lost contact with her. happy to report, nearly 22 hours after that, she is safe. she is back home with us.

>> robin: we are back now with our gma cover story. the impending port strike along the east coast and gulf that would force tens of thousands of dock workers off the job and would severely impact america's supply chain. elizabeth schulze is in baltimore with the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this could be the first time in nearly 50 years that the union representing dock workers goes on strike. it could have ripple effects across the supply chain, just in time for the holiday shopping season. this morning ports from new england to texas are bracing to grind to a stand still at midnight tonight up to 47,000 union dock workers set to walk off the job and go on strike. >> when my men hit the streets from maine to texas, every

single port will lock down. >> reporter: the union demanding a 77% wage increase over six years and limits on the use of automated machinery like cranes. the united states maritime alliance has responded offering a 40% pay hike. with negotiations at an impasse, president biden saying he won't get involved, saying unions have the right to strike and negotiate a fair deal. >> mr. president, would you intervene in a dock workers strike if they go on strike tuesday? >> no. >> reporter: if the strike moves forward, 14 ports along the east and gulf coast would be unable to load cargo on or off container ships from autos arriving to boston to fresh fruit ports at delaware and new york to imports of appliances machinery and electronics in houston. in all, it could cost the american economy up to $7.5 billion per week. lisa ripken and her son eli run a small toy store in maryland. they generate a majority of

[ laughter ] >> george: what made it different from other characters you played? >> many things. he's probably the most sensitive character i have ever played. he means well. just quite a sensitive guy. but the premise and basis of this film is about finding someone that sees you for who you are and supports you and brings out the best in you.

now he's a social media star called mrballen. welcome to gma. good to see you. >> thank you very much for having me. >> george: your first time. >> my first talk show ever. yeah, this is it. first one. >> george: welcome. great to have you here. >> thank you. >> george: tell us about why you wanted to do it. >> i grew up in a family of story tellers. i'm from just south of boston in quincy, massachusetts. my dad's a reporter for the boston globe, my sister as well. my mom's a writer. so i was raised to be a story teller. when i became a professional story teller on you tube, i, just seemed obvious that i would need to have a book. that's what i do, tell stories. funny enough, when i was in boot camp as i was becoming a navy seal, my mom used to send me books because i loved reading. it's a form of escape. the people at boot camp would take the books sent to me and rip them into pieces. you are not allowed to have nice

things in boot camp. i would get a chapter of a book, like chapter 13. i'm be in my rack reading a random chapter of a book. it was perfect. it was escape. >> george: that is some hazing right there. you say you were born a story teller. explain the detour to navy seal. >> i rebelled against becoming a story teller like my family. i always felt a call to service. certainly 9/11 had a huge impact on that. i met some navy s.e.a.l.s. that impressed me. just seemed like one of those things, anyone can try out to be a navy seal but very few people make it. i loved the idea of just throwing my hat in the ring, seeing if i have what it took. i barely made it over the finish line but became a navy seal. >> george: you then went to doing something else that anybody can do, but trying to make it on you tube. >> that's a huge accident. i was at this water park in pennsylvania with my family.

i tried a couple times to post some content to social media, nothing did. it was cringey dance videos and stuff nobody liked. i just decided on a whim to tell the story about these missing hikers from the 1950s. i posted a 60 second clip to tik tok. i have no followers, nothing. i post it. i go down to the water park with my kids. come back a couple hours later, there's 5 million views on the video. that was in 2020. now i'm on "good morning >> george: what does that teach you? what advice do you have for people? >> social media and content creation is sort of like the wild west right now. it's this wide open place for people to find their calling. there's people right now who -- there's a guy who went viral for reviewing mailboxes in las angeles. he has a whole brand around reviewing mailboxes. it's sort of like throw your hat in the ring. and also, when i first became telling scary stories on tik tok. like middle age man with a
