a calm and clear night in san francisco, but don't get too comfortable because the heat is on. we will likely see more record temperatures tomorrow as another heat wave sweeps the bay area, and with the heat comes risks heat related illnesses, poor air quality and increased fire danger are all in the forecast this week. good evening, i'm ama daetz and i'm dion lim. there is a lot to talk about weather wise, so right away let's get to the forecast. let's check in with abc7 news

meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. yeah. and ama and dion we are going to see this heat intensify as we head towards tomorrow. let's talk about the temperatures today. it was record setting. san jose tied at 95 degrees. 102 in san rafael. that was a new record. most other areas were in the 70s to 90s, but that is going to change, which is why excessive heat warnings are up for many of our valleys hills, san francisco bay, shoreline, the rest of the region in orange under a heat advisory. this is all going until 11 p.m. wednesday. and that's because the heat risk is going to be in the moderate to major category. you can see this for tomorrow. this pretty much means that the heat is taxing on your body and could make you sick. so you definitely need to take it easy. of course, those that are sensitive might be more prone to getting sick. the air quality has been deteriorating. spare the air was extended through tomorrow as we're expecting moderate to poor air quality. temperatures right now 60 to 80. we're still hanging on to some of the warmth. and compared to what? where we're

going, you can see it's only going to get hotter. 107 in livermore tomorrow, 105 in santa rosa, 96 oakland, 102 in san jose and 92 degrees in san francisco. i will be back with a look at what you can expect in the coming days. and when this heat wave will break. coming right up. dion just scorching. all right sandhya, thank you. now like sandhya mentioned, the bay area can expect dangerously hot conditions tomorrow. >> and wednesday, with the east bay getting some of the hottest conditions. temperatures well over 100 degrees could take a toll on pets, plants and people over the next few days. fire officials say hot weather and low humidity does bring increased fire danger, but the winds are not expected to be strong. there are no red flag warnings for our area, but there are health concerns about air quality. >> when you have low winds, there's not enough uh- energy there to push out the pollutant. >> with a spare. the air alert in effect, the advice is to limit outdoor activity and avoid dehydration by drinking plenty

of water. there was a fire in contra costa county this afternoon. it broke out next to ignacio valley road near walnut creek and started just after 3 p.m. crews were able to contain the flames. a little over an hour later, a cal fire aircraft helped them get a handle on it. five acres of vegetation burned, but no buildings were affected. >> some encouraging news for hundreds of p-g-and-e's customers who are facing a public safety power shut off this evening. the utility says improving weather conditions in alameda, contra costa and sonoma counties this evening allowed it to call off any planned outage. p-g-and-e's officials notified those customers earlier this afternoon, but 140 customers in napa county are still under the threat of an outage. most of those residents live in remote, mountainous areas of the county. track the heat wave with the abc seven bay area app so you can access the forecast with the same live doppler seven tools that our weather team uses, and we will send alerts right to your phone when there are any important updates. >> baseball legend pete rose

died today. rose was major league baseball's all time hits leader nicknamed the hit king. he was 83, but his stint as a player was not without controversy. >> rose was banned from the game. he loved so much for betting on the sport. here's tim kurkjian from our sister network, espn on the life of pete rose. >> charlie hustle is the most fitting nickname in baseball history, mostly for good reasons. no one hustled like pete rose. his headfirst slide is a lasting image, as is his steamrolling of catcher ray fosse in the 1970 all star game. rose is coming to the plate. >> throws a throw. he's in. pete rose barreled into ray fosse. >> no one cared about winning more than pete rose. and all that desire was the primary reason that rose played in more games and got more hits than any

player in baseball history. rose's numbers were about more than longevity. he won a most valuable player award, a rookie of the year, and played on three world championship teams, two with the reds and one with the phillies. he made 17 all-star teams, the only player to do so at five different positions. he won two gold gloves, three batting titles, and had ten 200 hit seasons. in 1985, rose passed ty cobb to become baseball's all time hit king. there it is. >> that's number 4192. >> soon after, commissioner peter ueberroth proclaimed that pete rose is baseball. but rose also was hustling off the field. in 1989, rose voluntarily

accepted a lifetime ban from baseball from commissioner bart giamatti after betting on baseball while he was the manager of the reds. >> the banishment for life of pete rose from baseball is the sad end of a sorry episode. one of the game's greatest players has engaged in a variety of acts which have stained the game well. >> regardless of what the commissioner said today, i did not bet on baseball. >> for years, rose vehemently maintained his innocence of the charges, and it kept him from a meaningful job in baseball. but in 2004, he finally came clean. >> pete for 14 years, your case has hovered over baseball, and in all that time, you have always denied publicly that you bet on baseball. did you bet on baseball? >> yes, i did. and that was my mistake. not coming clean a lot

the game. >> pence said he respected rose's intensity on the field, calling it a badge of honor. >> now a big move today inside the giants front office. giants legend buster posey is taking over as the team's top executive. the former pitcher will replace farhan zaidi, whom the giants fired as president of baseball operations. zaidi served six seasons in that role and reached the postseason just once. posey played his entire 12 year career with the giants and won three world series before retiring in 2021. then the next year, he became part of the ownership group. the giants will officially introduce posey as the new president of baseball operations during a news conference tomorrow. the team issued a statement this morning saying, quote, we are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead this franchise's baseball philosophy, and we feel that buster is the perfect fit. buster has the demeanor, intelligence, and drive to do this job. >> we move now to your voice.

strike by members of the international longshoremen association, means at least 36 ports from maine to texas could close. the wall street journal reports 49% of u.s. imports move through ports along the east and gulf coasts. this could mean higher prices and shortages of goods across the country. and the devastation caused by hurricane helene is coming to light across the south. homes have been destroyed, roads and highways impassable, covered by mud and floodwaters. just look at the damage. at least 133 deaths across six states are blamed on the category four hurricane. the storm is quickly being considered one of the worst in american history. a homeland security official says at least 600 people remain unaccounted for in hard hit chimney rock, north carolina. extreme flooding has decimated the community. the mayor there says he is heartbroken. >> the chimney rock that i moved to and love is different. and it's, it's just hard to hard to

uh- hard to figure all that out >> president biden says he will travel to north carolina wednesday to survey the damage. fema is working to deliver relief supplies to hard hit mountain neighborhoods by air, truck and even using mules. >> the devastation so widespread and so scary. you know, i always like to think that we have some of the best weather in the country. however, we're contending with something else. >> yeah, some slightly dangerous conditions here as well. let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel for the latest. sandhya. yeah. >> diane and ama, we are in for several days of a prolonged heat wave, and it is going to be dangerous. so let's talk about those temperatures compared to 24 hours ago. they're running double digits higher in many areas from san francisco to hayward, oakland, morgan hill. and because of this, we're going to see it warm up quickly tomorrow. we're already starting out milder tomorrow morning. now tomorrow afternoon we're looking at moderate to major heat risk for the entire bay area for

today. it was just bayside and inland. tomorrow it shifts to all regions as everyone will feel the heat. high pressure in command of our weather with the offshore winds. downsloping winds north northeasterly winds will further dry out the atmosphere. red flag warnings going until tomorrow morning up around northern california and to our south, right around southern monterey county interior portions are under a fire. weather watch beginning wednesday until thursday. this is where the winds will be gusty. low humidity and you've got critically dry fuels. so the fire danger will be elevated for us here in the bay area. even though the winds are not expected to be strong, we have the other criteria is the very dry fuels. we've got the low humidity and then you have breezy conditions in the hills. oakland hills 21 miles an hour out of the northeast. so just stay aware because as you take a look at the fire danger index, the hilltops in particular will be in the moderate to high category, even very high in some of our hills early tomorrow morning. once again tomorrow

evening you go into moderate to high category for some parts and that repeats on wednesday as well. a live view from our golden gate bridge camera. and we do have clear skies out there. it's in the 70s. it's still very warm. san francisco, oakland, hayward, 74, in san jose, you're at 61, in half moon bay. a gorgeous view from our emeryville camera. 66 in santa rosa and napa right now. 72 degrees in concord and livermore and exploratorium. cameras showing you a beautiful view of san francisco. dangerous heat wave with record temps the next two days. elevated fire danger as we are expecting dry, breezy conditions in the hills and friday the heat moderates. we'll all need a break as we hit the weekend, so temperatures this evening, 60s and 70s at 11:00. you'll notice by tomorrow morning it's a mild start. 50s and 60s rapidly warming up. numbers will be in the 80s and 90s away from the coast. and by the afternoon we're talking triple digits and many of our inland communities. this continues to be a slow drop off

in the temperatures into the evening hours. so your morning numbers will start off in the 50s and 60s under clear skies tomorrow afternoon in the south bay, you are looking at 100 in santa clara, 102 san jose 107, in gilroy. on the peninsula 101 in redwood city, 85 and half moon bay, san francisco 92 degrees. first time in two years. the last time they were in the low 90s was back in october. in 2022 105 in santa rosa, 104. in san rafael in the east bay, mid 90s oakland berkeley 98, union city head inland 105 in walnut creek 107 in livermore and brentwood. wednesday is going to be equally hot, if not even a little bit hotter than that. and then we head into thursday. still triple digits. by friday, you drop out of the triple digits. everyone gets at least some easing of the heat. we're talking 70s to 90s. the accuweather seven day forecast, dangerous heat wave, fire danger. really the next couple of days friday we get easing of those temperatures and

it's the games the team hasn't played that are getting national attention. both boise state and southern utah forfeited their games. the teams haven't elaborated on their decision. in addition, sdsu's own co-captain has joined a lawsuit challenging the ncaa's title nine protections regarding transgender athletes in women's sports. the suit claims an sdsu player is transgender and questions whether it is safe or fair for other players to share the court with them. transgender rights supporters are appalled. >> it's happening all over the country, you know, so part of me is not surprised, but part of me is also very upset that it's continuing to happen. >> some conservative lawmakers are publicly supporting the forfeiting team, saying they are fighting for fairness in women's sports and ensuring player safety. sdsu would only say that their student athletes are in compliance with ncaa rules and regulations. well, the warriors
