dockworkers at ports on the east coast and the gulf coast walking off the job. >> the deadline for the new contract passed overnight. the strike could cost the economy billions of dollars every day, and it could lead to higher prices and product shortages ahead of the holiday shopping season. the fight they would overnight nearly 47,000 dockworkers hitting the picket lines, kicking off a strike at 14 ports from new england to texas, which handle about half the goods shipped in and out of the u.s. >> nothing's going to move without us. nothing >> analysts warn the strike could cost the economy nearly $5 billion per day. they say consumers will not see an immediate impact, but a prolonged strike could raise consumer prices ahead of the holiday season and could lead to shortages. new york's governor is urging hospitals to stock up on supplies. >> we're deeply concerned about the impact that a strike could have on our supply chains, especially when it comes to critical goods like medical

supplies and others. >> union members are demanding a 77% wage increase over six years, and a ban on the automation of cranes and other equipment. the maritime alliance representing the port offered a nearly 50% pay raise and pledged to keep limits on automation. overnight, the union president addressed workers at the port of new york and new jersey. >> now they're making billions and billions of dollars through pandemic. when all of us were working and they were making money. and now they're charging $30 in a container and they're putting 1 or 2 or three people in that container that becomes 60,000 for that container. who's the who's the greedy one here? >> president biden could force union workers back to work, but has suggested he will not exercise that power. the white house says it is in communication with both sides to try and keep negotiations moving forward. >> now to the aftermath of hurricane helene. the death toll rising. hundreds of people are

unaccounted for. food and water distribution is ramping up in north carolina, which got nearly 30in of rain. the governor says the damage is extensive and devastating. this morning, hurricane helene now ranks among the deadliest storms to hit the u.s. in modern history, with more than 130 deaths now confirmed in six states. >> this is a massive, coordinated effort to help this area, both in the short term and in the long term. >> as of last night, more than 600 people were unaccounted for in buncombe county, north carolina, where communications have been down and roads are impassable. main roads into asheville were washed away or blocked by mudslides. the city's water system also badly damaged. this group of realtors is collecting water for the community. >> we just felt like we needed to do something. when i woke up on saturday morning, i still had power. i still had my family. i knew where they were and other people can't say that. >> north carolina's governor says fema has delivered 1,000,000l of water and 600,000

meals. helene hit florida's gulf coast last week as a category four hurricane, moving through georgia, the carolinas and tennessee, where the ground was already saturated from days of rain. national guard members from at least eight states as far away as iowa and connecticut have been deployed to north carolina to help in the response and recovery effort. in neighboring tennessee, a plastics manufacturer says several workers went missing or died in the flooding. these images circulating online were reportedly taken from an employee who survived by escaping in the back of a tractor trailer. >> esperando el encuentro. >> families are now demanding answers, claiming workers were told not to leave as the floodwater rose. the company says most employees left immediately, but some remained at the facility or nearby for an unknown reason, adding at no time were employees told that they would be fired if they left the facility. for employees who were non-english speaking, bilingual employees delivered the message. president biden is expected to visit north carolina tomorrow after governor cooper

leader appeared to be sweating as he declared that his fighters are ready for battle. abc's ian pannell reports israeli airstrikes have killed hundreds of people in lebanon in the past two weeks, injuring thousands. >> this is the only main burns unit in lebanon and it gets almost no funding. but for 15 year old hussein, it saved his life. he was badly burned in an israeli strike on his house in southern lebanon. he says hezbollah had launched an attack from nearby. i'm in some pain, he says. he criticizes hezbollah for operating near his house, saying, we have nothing to do with the war. you get hit out of nowhere. >> our thanks to ian pannell. the pentagon is sending additional troops to the region as a precaution. >> turning to the presidential race tonight is the one and only vice presidential debate. and with predictions that this could be the closest election since 1876, the stakes are high. abc's perry russom has a preview. perry. good morning. >> andrew, good morning to you. this is the only face to face

50ft. an international airspace. u.s. officials calling the maneuver unprofessional. >> verizon is apologizing for a widespread outage that affected more than 100,000 customers across the country. some people were left without cell phone service for hours yesterday, many of them in major cities like chicago, seattle and new york. service has since been restored. the fcc is investigating. >> we turn now to a legal battle pitting the state of california against a catholic hospital accused of denying a woman an emergency abortion. this morning, the state of california is suing a catholic hospital for allegedly refusing to provide an abortion to a patient, even though officials claim her life was at risk. >> we're used to seeing stories of women denied life saving treatment coming out of states that have outlawed abortion. but even here in california, we are not immune from this problem. >> i needed an abortion so that my husband didn't lose both of his daughters and his wife in

one night. >> anna nussloch says she was 15 weeks pregnant with twins when she went to providence. saint joseph of northern california, severely bleeding after her water broke. she says doctors told her the pregnancy was no longer viable, but they were prohibited from offering an emergency abortion if her twins had a detectable heartbeat and her life was not immediately at risk. instead, she and her husband were sent to another hospital 12 miles away. >> before we left providence, a nurse came in and she gave me a bucket full of towels and she said, they wanted me to give you these in case something happens in the car. a bucket full of towels. like you'd give someone to clean a bathroom. >> the hospital that provided care will soon be closing its labor and delivery unit, leaving providence saint joseph as the only hospital in the county that could perform an abortion procedure. the attorney general is now requesting a court order to force the hospital to perform prompt emergency care, including abortions. in response, the

♪ to love somebody. ♪ ♪ the way i love you. ♪ ♪ . >> my mind started to go, i'm going to die tonight. >> a college student is describing some scary moments behind the wheel in western minnesota. he says his honda suddenly started accelerating on its own, topping 110mph, and he couldn't stop it. troopers finally set up a barrier with their cruisers, and after 30 miles, terrifying miles, the honda pilot suv came to a crashing halt. the teen claims the suv malfunctioned. the cause is under investigation. >> there is no comment this morning so far from the british royal family about a new claim that queen elizabeth battled a form of bone cancer before her death. former prime minister boris johnson makes the claim in his new memoir. johnson writes that despite looking pale, the queen's mind was unimpaired.

the coast. you really want to take this heat seriously today? because it is going to be some of the hottest weather we've seen all year. live look from the tam cam. it's looking lovely out there. we are fog free temperatures right now. we are in the 60s, but we do have these heat alerts. they have been upgraded since yesterday. now the city of san francisco, underneath an excessive heat warning. so too for oakland, san jose, parts of the north bay. that's the highest risk when it comes to any sort of heat. so you do want to take these warnings very seriously. 73 right now in san rafael, 66 in san jose, it is a warm 65 in the city currently. so we have that warm morning that will get us into a hot afternoon. so inland we're going at or above 100 today as excessive heat warnings are in effect. look at the bay shoreline. this is so impressive. around the bay shoreline which is typically one of our cooler areas. upper seconds today. that's why that excessive heat warning has been expanded. these are about 25 degrees above average even along the coast.
