because it is going to be some of the hottest weather we've seen all year. live look from the tam cam. it's looking lovely out there. we are fog free temperatures right now. we are in the 60s, but we do have these heat alerts. they have been upgraded since yesterday. now the city of san francisco, underneath an excessive heat warning. so too for oakland, san jose, parts of the north bay. that's the highest risk when it comes to any sort of heat. so you do want to take these warnings very seriously. 73 right now in san rafael, 66 in san jose, it is a warm 65 in the city currently. so we have that warm morning that will get us into a hot afternoon. so inland we're going at or above 100 today as excessive heat warnings are in effect. look at the bay shoreline. this is so impressive. around the bay shoreline which is typically one of our cooler areas. upper seconds today. that's why that excessive heat warning has been expanded. these are about 25 degrees above average even along the coast. look at these

temperatures. lots of sunshine. we're going to the low 80s along the coast. a close look at these highs coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria. see troc definitely going to be hot. >> all right. thank you so much jewel. right now we are getting a live look outside. you can see the bay bridge. traffic is flowing freely across the span. the metering lights of course, are off this early. an easy drive about eight minutes from the tolls to the city. and then getting a live look right now at our golden gate bridge camera. no fog right now you can see hardly any traffic as well. very quiet on the golden gate bridge right now, amanda. and back to that heat. now >> san francisco residents are taking this city scorcher seriously. abc7 news reporter lena howland joins us live in. lena, how are people getting prepared for what's expected to be the hottest day in the city in two years? >> yeah, that's right, drew has been warning us about this san francisco could hit 90 degrees today for the first time in two years. that's why people across the city are making sure that

they've got their ac and their fans ready to go. now, keep in mind that this comes as the bay area, including san francisco, is under a heat advisory until at least wednesday afternoon. keep in mind the city is particularly vulnerable to extreme heat because our bodies aren't used to it and our buildings aren't designed for it. a reason why kevin ray has had to make a big purchase a couple of months ago, and hardware stores are staying stocked up just in case. >> we bought an air conditioner because we just need to be able to sleep at night. we knew that this day was coming and you kno, in the years past, it was like a 1 or 2 days now and then, but like a week straight, like i got to be able to sleep. >> i don't think we're going to run out, but you never can tell. we usually don't sell a lot of fans until it's been hot for three, 4 or 5 days in a row and then if it continues, then we'll sell a lot of fans.

teachers from oakland unified are demanding the district do more to get the lead out of drinking water at ousd schools. they rallied outside city hall yesterday as the school district and city worked to find a solution. district officials now say they may need to spend more than $50 million on repairs. it's money they do financial solution. families are frustrated. >> we will not accept. the district and the city. pointing fingers at one another. talking across each other. bouncing the ball back and forth in terms of who's ultimately responsible for this. >> and usd committee is expected to meet this month to discuss the next steps. last month, the district revealed it had made repairs at 32 schools, was retesting the water and had installed special water refill stations that can filter lead out. >> breaking news overnight,

nearly 47,000 dock workers at ports from maine to texas have gone on strike. they're demanding better pay and less automation. but as abc news reporter perry russom explains, there are fears this strike could reignite inflation and cause shortages of goods across the country. >> this morning, a massive dock worker strike. thousands of people on the picket lines at 14 ports across the country. >> nothing's going to move without us. nothing. >> international longshoremen's association president harold daggett rallying union members outside new york city as the strike began. >> i want to tell you all what you're doing is right. this is going down in history. what we're doing here. >> union members say they want a 77% wage increase over six years. and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container moving trucks. >> employers push automation under the guise of safety. but it is really about cutting labor costs to increase their already

that coming in at 105. so looking at your daytime highs today, everybody's either in the 90s or exceeding 100 degrees this afternoon just for reference, to show you just how hot this is compared to average, we're running about 20 to 25 degrees warmer than our typical daytime highs this time of the year. we're usually in the low 70s low 80s, but we are underneath this heat wave. this is day two of the heat wave. so look at live doppler seven along with satellite. this area of high pressure it is just strengthening. it's the heat pump. and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. watch how fast we warm this morning. here's 10 a.m. already. feels pretty warm out there in the mid 70s to the lower 80s. by lunchtime. already well into the 90s in our hottest spots. look at the city. upper 80s similar story for oakland. low 90s in san jose. then it just gets even hotter than that. low 90s in the city. mid 90s in oakland. 100 in san jose at that hour. look inland 100 for san ramon, santa rosa, 100 for some areas above

concert, according to family members. the former president's birthday wish is to vote for vice president kamala harris for president in the upcoming election. >> the sports world is remembering one of the greats, pete rose, baseball's all time hit king has died. he was 83 years old. rose topped mlb's all time hit list over a 24 season career. he played for three world series championship teams from the 1960s to the 80s. he was a player and then a manager of the cincinnati reds, but his gambling on his own team ended his managerial career and kept him from the hall of fame. no cause of death has been announced. >> today, the giants will officially introduce buster posey as the new president of baseball operations. the team is having an event at 10 a.m, almost exactly 24 hours after announcing a major shakeup in their front office. the former pitcher will replace farhan zaidi, whom the giants fired yesterday. zaidi served six seasons in that role and reached

the postseason just once. posey, of course, played his entire 12 year career with the giants and won three world series before retiring in 2021. and then in 2022, he became part of the ownership group. the giants will officially introduce posey as the new president of baseball operations. during a news conference today. the team issued a statement saying, quote, we are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead this franchise's baseball philosophy, and we feel that buster is the perfect fit. buster has the demeanor, intelligence, and drive to do this job. >> new development san francisco is a step closer to expanding rent control protections in the city. a board of supervisors committee passed supervisor aaron peskin s ordinance yesterday. it would expand the current law to buildings built between 1979 and november of 2024. peskin, who is also running for mayor, says about 100,000 renters would benefit. success of the proposal hinges

on the success of proposition 33, which would repeal a state law limiting local governments from enacting rent control. the ordinance also needs approval by the full board and also the mayor. >> today, you can grab tickets to see musician jack white perform at two pop up shows here in the bay area. these concerts are a part of his no name album tour, which he released back in july. the former white stripes frontman is set to play at the phoenix theater in petaluma on thursday. then on friday, white will take the stage at san francisco's great american music hall. tickets are available starting at 1 p.m. you do have to pre-register in order to purchase tickets, though this week hardly strictly bluegrass festival returns to san francisco's golden gate park. >> more than 60 artists are scheduled to perform over the course of the three day event. rock and roll hall of fame musician patti smith leads up the lineup. the festival kicks off on friday and runs through sunday. it is free to attend.

>> las vegas radio stations are saying goodbye to green day. this after singer billie joe armstrong bashed the city during the group's concert in san francisco last month. armstrong blasted a's or a's owner john fisher for his plans to move the team to vegas. at least two radio stations have banned green day's music from their airwaves. now check this out. armstrong left this graffiti at the toronto blue jays stadium back in august. he apparently finds the oakland a's logo in an interior hallway and spray painted over it. you can see the green b representing the oakland ballers. >> i mean, you can't be mad at them for feeling some sort of way about this. >> yeah. >> local guy. >> soquel's. >> yeah. grew up with them? yeah. now they're moving to vegas and they're not quiet about it. >> clearly they're like b now done. >> neither is larry beil. >> yeah. that's true. maybe he's not allowed in vegas either. on a website about it. >> it is fantastic. >> yeah. it's so great. so good.

>> all right, we'll be ranting or raving, depending on if you like the hot weather or not. we are finding that today is going to be the hottest for most of us this year. for some of us, it's the hottest day in several years. really. take this heat seriously. we're trying to hammer home that these temperatures are so far above average. these are day two of our heat wave that is going to last several days. so here's a look at the accuweather headlines. we have dangerous heat today. records are very likely. we have excessive heat warnings in effect. for most of us that's the highest threat. our highest risk when it comes to the threat of hot weather, this heat wave is going to continue into thursday. and now the weekend is trending hotter as well. i'll show you the seven-day forecast in one second. let's talk today. nothing but sunshine, no matter where you are. temperatures soar inland. mid 90s already by lunchtime. 104 105 by 5 p.m. look at the bay shoreline. it is hot. it is sunny, 90 already by noon. and then we have several hours that were stuck in the 90s. i know a lot of us around

verizon is apologizing twice a month. >> a san francisco lieutenant dresses as a chicken to cross the road, all in an effort to build a better bay area. it's part of a pedestrian sting operation done to slow down cars at a busy intersection in the ingleside neighborhood. his. he's a decoy for other officers standing by, ready to take on drivers who don't stop giving drivers ample time to be able to see us and to be able to stop in time. >> surprisingly, some people say they don't see them uh- a lot of people say they do see them, but they're mistaken about the rules. >> you really can't miss him, i feel. but this operation began six months ago as a creative solution to a fatal problem. every year, about 30 people are killed and at least 500 more are severely injured. while traveling on sf streets. so far in 2024, there have been 23 traffic fatalities, 18 pedestrians and according to

an undefeated start to the season for san jose state women's volleyball. but it's the games, the team has not played now getting national attention, both boise state and southern utah forfeited their games against sdsu, though the teams have not elaborated on their decision to do so. in addition, sdsu's own co-captain has joined a lawsuit challenging the ncaa title nine protections regarding transgender athletes in women's sports. the suit claims an sdsu player identifies as transgender and now there are questions about whether it is safe or fair for other players to share the court with them. transgender rights supporters are appalled. >> it's happening all over the country. you know, so part of me is not surprised. but part of me is also very upset that it's continuing to happen. >> however, some conservative lawmakers are publicly supporting the forfeiting teams,

advice from experts about limiting outdoor activity and also staying hydrated. such a good reminder. >> yeah. no kidding. good morning everyone. it is tuesday, october 1st. >> why don't we start with a check of the forecast with meteorologist drew tuma? drew, we've been talking about this hot weather. it's going to be really hot today. yeah. and it's not just for those communities away from the coast. >> it is everybody. even the coast is going to feel those hot temperatures. so we do have expanded warnings now. and excessive heat warning has now been included for the city of san francisco, oakland, san jose. the highest areas of the north bay in the hills. these temperatures today are going to be so far above average about 25 degrees. some of the hottest weather we have seen all year. temperatures right now, kind of a mixed bag in our valleys. we're in the 50s, but in other areas we're in the 60s and low 70s. so it is going to be hot later on this afternoon. look at the temperature trend inland. we'll surpass 100 degrees later on this afternoon. that excessive heat warning is in effect. record highs are likely this afternoon. look at the bay

shoreline. it is very rare that we see the bay shoreline almost matching our inland highs around the bay shoreline. sunny and hot. that's why the excessive heat warning is in effect today. upper 90s for daytime highs and even along the coast. we are going to feel the heat today. clear skies, sunshine today and highs. we're going into the 80s. a closer look at these temperatures coming up in seven minutes. let's check in with amanda. see how the commute is going. >> hi, drew. we'll start with our overall map. overall looking pretty good, except that typical slowdown along the altamont pass will take you in so we can see kind of what we're dealing with here. drivers can expect 14 to 23mph in certain spots, and then the drive times will start with 50 minutes for that drive from tracy to dublin, 16 minutes from dublin to mission boulevard south, and then another 15 minute drive to get from 101 to cupertino. you can see the east shore freeway really filling in now. the headlights heading westbound highway four to the toll plaza that will take you 23 minutes as the bay area sweats through this heat wave.

>> drew says that it will be the hottest day in san francisco in two years. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the city. selina, how are people getting ready for this heat wave? >> reporter well, as san francisco could be seeing the hottest day they've seen in two years, doctors are encouraging everyone to make sure they are drinking enough water, wear plenty of sunscreen, and it's also a good reminder to close up the curtains in your house. now, before things heat up. hardware stores like robert's hardware in the haight are also prepared and ready if they do see an influx of customers asking for fans, though, sometimes it takes a heat wave of 3 to 5 days to start to really start selling the fans, something owen mckee, his wife and dog, might be needing as they don't have any air conditioning and plan to stay mostly indoors. >> you have air conditioning here in the city. >> we do not. we like a lot of people in apartment blocks. we open windows. that's the most

effective way of doing it. >> so the key is a good breeze without question. >> if you have the breeze, everything should be okay. reporter >> now, heat exhaustion can come on quickly in weather like this. here's what you should be looking out for. heavy. sweating, cold, pale and clammy skin. a fast but weak pulse. nausea or vomiting. cramps or headaches and dizziness. if you start to feel those symptoms, get to a cool place. loosen any tight clothing, put cool, wet clothes on your body, or take a cool bath and take sips of water. if your symptoms last longer than an hour or you start vomiting, get medical help. heat exhaustion can progress to a heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. many of the symptoms are similar to heat exhaustion. here's what's different with heat stroke. fever of 103 or higher. hot red. dry or damp skin with heat exhaustion. the skin is cool. there's no sweating when people are in a heat stroke, and with heat stroke, people have a fast, strong pulse with heat

day ahead in the bay area. >> first, today, san francisco leaders could take a big step toward cracking down on sideshows. supervisors are scheduled to take their second and final vote on a new ordinance to increase penalties for people who promote or participate in them. police could seize cars involved in sideshows and even keep them permanently if a person is eventually convicted. the ordinance would even apply to people watching this already passed unanimously last month, and it is a big day for people who work at salesforce. >> today marks the first day they are required back in the office. at least three days a week. that also means that you may see a lot more people around downtown san francisco, especially near salesforce tower, restaurants and businesses near salesforce center say they welcome the increased foot traffic. the city economist says that getting office workers back to the city's downtown will be key to the area's recovery. >> also today, an important discussion about the budget crisis at san francisco unified. san francisco's board of supervisors will hold a hearing

additional lights will represent the number of people who attended the show in southern california. >> the person accused of hijacking the bus and taking three people hostage last week is now facing murder and kidnaping charges. the 51 year old refused to appear in court yesterday. a judge ordered him to appear today. investigators say the suspect boarded the bus in los angeles early in the morning last wednesday. he then held the bus driver and two passengers at gunpoint while forcing the driver to drive around. as police followed, one of the passengers was killed before police took the suspect into custody. >> i also want to take a moment to honor the bravery of the driver and passengers who face unimaginable terror, mr. dennis contreras. the bus driver acted with courage under immense pressure, making decisions that likely save others lives. >> if convicted, the suspect could face more than 90 years in

both sides of the border. >> sean combs, also known as diddy, is appealing a federal judge's recent decision that denied him bail and placed him in custody. combs is accused of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. the judge denied him bail based on concerns that he may try to tamper with witnesses. officials were also concerned the rapper may be a flight risk. combs two new lawyers requested his bail be set at $50 million. >> the lion fire in san bernardino county has reignited after weeks of firefighters battling the blaze. the blaze is forced new evacuation orders near big bear lake and boulder bay. officials say the uptick started in a section of the forest where there was no containment line around the santa ana river drainage. cal fire posted that the excessive heat and the dry climate made it easier for the flames to spread, as the fire continues east, it's transitioning into a fuel bed with no recorded burn.
