what we're going to find this afternoon. it's a pretty view from our mount tam cam. we are totally clear out there. but we do have expanded heat warnings. the excessive heat warning has now been expanded to include the city of san francisco, oakland, san jose. this is the highest risk when it comes to heat. that means temperatures are going to be very hot today. look at numbers right now. 60s. 70s right now 73 is that current temperature in san rafael. so temperatures are going to take off very quickly. look at our inland forecast. we're going above 100 degrees later on. this afternoon. that excessive heat warning is in effect our hottest areas, probably touching 105 106. this afternoon. look at the bay shoreline forecast. it is hot. upper 90s later on today. i know a lot of us around the bay shoreline don't have ac. you do want to find ways to stay cool out there. we have a list of cooling centers on abc7 news.com and along the coast. today it is going to be warm to hot, sunny skies. we're going into the 80s along the coast. let's check in and see how our community is

going this morning. >> yeah. so let's get a look at your overall map here. you can see mostly in the green but we do have a red spot there. this is in vallejo. there's a three vehicle crash right now. it's on the shoulder and the center divide. and this is causing a slowdown from redwood street. so you could see that the speeds are down to about 20mph. so again three vehicle crash on westbound 80. this is in vallejo. we'll keep tracking that for you throughout the morning. and looking live right now the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see traffic is really starting to build up right now. it is backed up all the way to the west grand avenue exit there, but it opens up across the span into the city and from the toll plaza to san francisco. it will take you 14 minutes right now. we're also going to take a live look right now in the south bay. san jose, 101 880 camera. no issues there, but traffic is starting to fill in on northbound 101 in the san francisco direction. but again, it is moving pretty nicely at this time. >> all right. and back to the

heat. now san francisco residents are taking this city scorcher seriously. abc7 news reporter lena howland joins us live. and, lena, how are people getting prepared for what's expected to be the hottest day in the city in two years? reporter well, amanda drew has been warning us about this. >> san francisco could hit 90 degrees today for the first time in two years. that's why we're seeing people get their ac and their fans ready ahead of this heat wave. this comes as san francisco is under an excessive heat warning until, at least wednesday night. keep in mind the city is particularly vulnerable to extreme heat because our bodies aren't used to it and our buildings are not designed for it. a reason why kevin rehak had to make a big purchase a couple of months ago, and hardware stores are staying stocked up just in case. >> we bought an air conditioner because we just need to be able to sleep at night. we knew that this day was coming, and you

know, in the years past, it was like a 1 or 2 days now and then. but like a week straight, like i got to be able to sleep. >> i don't think we're going to run out, but you never can tell. we usually don't sell a lot of fans until it's been hot for three, 4 or 5 days in a row. and then if it continues, then we'll sell a lot of fans. >> if the heat sticks around stores like robert's hardware in the haight, which you just heard from, says they could see a demand for fans because of the heat. the city has opened up a number of cooling centers for folks to come cool off and charge their devices. those include the main library and other library branches in chinatown, glen park ranch, mission bay, and north beach. during this heat wave, doctors are also encouraging folks to make sure they are drinking plenty of water, wear that sunscreen, and also find shade whenever you can and make sure you are doing your outdoor workouts in the coolest parts of the day. live in san francisco

who's ultimately responsible for this. >> and ousd committee is expected to meet this month to discuss the next steps. last month, the district revealed it had made repairs at 32 schools, was retesting the water and had installed special water bottle refill stations that could filter the lead out. >> happening now nearly 47,000 dock workers at ports from maine to texas are on strike. they walked off the job at 14 ports overnight. workers are demanding a 77% raise over six years. they also want a ban on all automated cranes used to move shipping containers. these dock workers handle about half of all goods shipped in and out of the u.s. the strike could cost the economy up to $7.5 billion in just a week. it could also lead to supply shortages and higher prices across the country. >> happening today, the vice presidential candidates will face off on the debate stage in new york city. kamala harris's running mate, minnesota governor

time. 39th president jimmy carter is 100 years old today. he's the first commander in chief to reach the centennial mark. there are plenty of events planned in celebration, including a military flyover at his hometown in plains, georgia, and a naturalization ceremony, plus a concert, according to family members. the former president's birthday wish is to vote for vice president kamala harris for president in the upcoming election. the sports world is remembering one of the greats. pete rose, baseball's all time hit king, has died. he was 83 years old. rose topped mlb's all time hit list over a 24 season career. he played for three world series championship teams from the 1960s to the 80s. he was a player and then manager of the cincinnati reds, but his gambling on his own team ended his managerial career and kept him from the hall of fame. no cause of death has been announced. today, the giants will officially introduce buster

posey as the new president of baseball operations. the team is having an event at 10 a.m, almost exactly 24 hours after announcing a major shakeup in their front office. the former catcher will replace farhan zaidi, whom the giants fired yesterday. zaidi served six seasons in that role and reached the postseason just once. posey, of course, played his entire 12 year career with the giants and won three world series before retiring in 2021. and then in 2022, he became part of the ownership group. the team issued a statement saying, quote, we are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead the franchise's baseball philosophy, and we feel that buster is the perfect fit. buster has the demeanor, intelligence, and drive to do this job. stay tuned of course, for the mlb playoffs on abc seven. today the tigers visit the astros for game one of the wild card series. our coverage starts at 11 right here

on abc seven. and if you want to get the very latest on the heat wave, drew will have the updated forecast on midday live wherever you stream abc seven news. >> new developments san francisco is a step closer to expanding rent control protections in the city. a board of supervisors committee passed supervisor aaron peskin s ordinance yesterday. it would expand the current law to buildings built between 1979 and november of 2024. peskin, who is also running for mayor, says about 100,000 renters would benefit. success of the proposal hinges on the success of proposition 33, which would repeal a state law limiting local governments from enacting rent control. the ordinance also needs approval by the full board and the mayor. >> in the south bay, it's been an undefeated start to the season for san jose state women's volleyball. but it's the games the team has not played. now getting national attention, both boise state and southern utah forfeited their games against sdsu, though the teams

have not elaborated on their decision to do so. in addition, sdsu's own co-captain has joined a lawsuit challenging the ncaa title nine protections regarding transgender athletes in women's sports. the suit claims an sdsu player identifies as transgender. and now there are questions about whether it is safe or fair for other players to share the court with them. transgender rights supporters are appalled. >> it's happening all over the country. you know, so part of me is not surprised, but part of me is also very upset that it's continuing to happen. >> however, some conservative lawmakers are publicly supporting the forfeiting teams, saying they are fighting for fairness in women's sports and ensuring player safety. sdsu would only say their student athletes are in compliance with ncaa rules and regulations. >> twice a month, a san francisco lieutenant dresses as

a chicken to cross the road. this is all an effort to build a better bay area. it's part of a pedestrian sting operation done to slow down cars at a busy intersection at the ingleside neighborhood. he is a decoy for other officers who are standing by, ready to ticket drivers who don't stop giving drivers ample time to be able to see us and to be able to stop in time. >> surprisingly, some people say they don't see them uh- a lot of people say they do see them, but they're mistaken about the rules. >> that's great right there. well, the operation began six months ago as a creative solution to a very fatal problem. every year, about 30 people are killed and at least 500 more are severely injured. while traveling on sf streets. so far in 2024, there have been 23 traffic fatalities, 18 were pedestrians, and according to walk sf, the majority were on a crosswalk. residents say they

are thankful. they also want to see long term solutions, though a nonprofit based in the south bay bike shop is helping to build a better bay area, people facing barriers are getting a chance to learn small business and vocational skills. >> community cycles of california uses bikes to help students ride out of poverty and into independence. ten students are taking part in the six month workforce training program. >> we're not just teaching, being a bike mechanic or being retail. we're teaching life lessons that will make them better employees all the way through. >> it wasn't a contributing member of society, and now that i'm able to get back on my feet, i'm able to put my best foot forward and actually follow a path. >> the classroom was built thanks to a $20,000 grant from the cupertino rotary, and the six month pilot program is funded through a $300,000 grant from california community colleges. >> croft time turned into no time for a sassy toddler in

effect, we're in the 90s by noon triple digits later on today around the bay shoreline. we're already into the 90s by noon, and we'll stay there through the entire afternoon. so several hours of hot temperatures around the bay shoreline and along the coast. sunny skies as well, and temperatures warm to hot. we're going into the 80s later on today. major heat risk for most of us today because these temperatures about 20 to 25 degrees above average for this time of the year. so we're hitting a high of 96 in oakland, a record high very likely in san jose of 102 92. in the city, 105 in santa rosa, 106 in concord, and even along the coast, santa cruz coming in at 97 degrees overnight tonight. it's pretty warm out there, 60s and low 70s in our hills will stay in the 80s as another hot afternoon rolls in here. tomorrow, future tracker shows you our heat advisories and excessive heat warnings will continue through wednesday. they'll likely get extended into thursday because temperatures still stay well above average over the next couple of days. so here's the

us around the bay shoreline may not have ac. really want to seek ways to stay cool, whether that's a cooling center or another building, because these temperatures are going to be hot for much of the afternoon along the coast. we cannot escape the heat here either. if you're heading to the coast, just know we will have sunshine, but daytime highs will be in the 80s. your ocean water temperature is in the upper 50s. let's check on that commute this morning. see how those drive times are going. yeah. >> good morning drew. we're going to start off with our current drive times. taking a look at highway four to the maze at a 26 minute drive, a 21 minute commute to get from emeryville to san francisco and then a ten minute commute to get from san francisco to sfo. our overall map showing a few slow spots. that includes the typical slowdown along the altamont pass, but there's also a trouble spot over in sunol. this is southbound 680 before koopman road. there is a solo crash in the left lane. we are seeing heavy traffic from sunol boulevard with an eight minute delay. you can see speeds down to between 7 and 15mph in spots. you should take foothill road to

avoid this, as the bay area sweats through this heat wave. >> drew says it will be the hottest day in san francisco in two years. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the city, with some tips to stay safe. good morning lena. >> good morning gloria. right now, doctors are urging folks to make sure they are drinking plenty of water. make sure they are also using lots of sunscreen. and at this time of day, they say it's also a good time to make sure all of the curtains are closed in your house before that heat really sets in. hardware stores like roberts hardware in the haight are also prepared and ready. if they do see an influx of customers asking for fans, though, sometimes it takes a heat wave of 3 to 5 days to start really selling the fans, something mckee, his wife and dog might be needing as they don't have any air conditioning and plan to stay mostly indoors. >> you have air conditioning here in the city. >> we do not. we. we like a lot of people in apartment blocks.

announced the san francisco based company was fined under a consent order for not fully reporting the crash. under the order, cruise must improve and submit timely reports with better details surrounding incidents. the order lasts for two years. we've reached out to cruise for comment but have yet to hear back. >> a utah woman visiting the big sur coast has the california highway patrol to thank after she became stuck on the shoreline while hunting for rocks on the beach on sunday. this is video that was captured from a chp helicopter. the crew on board found the missing woman's car. then they located her wandering the rocky shores. the chp chopper was able to land at a beach nearby. they picked her up and they flew her back to her car, where her husband was waiting for her. the vallejo police department is dealing with a staffing crisis, but help could be on the way. governor gavin newsom signed a bill allowing retired officers to work full time for the solano

county sheriff's office to better cover vallejo, also referencing a more community based approach. $550,000 of grant money will go towards a police partnership with the integrated health and resource team. they give around the cloc, trauma informed care for residents who are experiencing mental and behavioral health crisis. >> a dangerous type of mosquito is spreading farther in santa clara county. more 8-80 aegypti mosquitoes have been discovered in the region. the district has already been making efforts to trap and eradicate them from neighborhoods in east san jose and gilroy. staff are going door to door to check properties and treating as needed at no cost to residents. these mosquitoes are an invasive species and can spread disease. >> vta says ridership this month has exceeded the agency's expectations. the south bay agency says it saw ten weekdays, where 100,000 plus riders took its busses and light rail. they

created schools being back in session. events at levi's stadium and rising demand from commuters. as a result, vta is restoring four bus routes to full service. the agency saw a high of 125,000 daily riders in 2019. and now it's time for our abc seven mornings advance. it's our way of highlighting some things that are happening in the day ahead, right here in the bay area. >> first, today, san francisco leaders could take a big step toward cracking down on sideshows. supervisors are scheduled to take their second and final vote on a new ordinance to increase penalties for people who promote or participate in them. police could seize cars involved in sideshows and even keep them permanently. if a person is eventually convicted. the ordinance would even apply to people watching this already passed unanimously last month, and it is a big day for people who work at salesforce. >> today marks the first day they're required back in the office. at least three days a

week. that also means you may see a lot more people around downtown san francisco, especially near salesforce tower. restaurants and businesses near salesforce center say they welcome the increased foot traffic. the city economist says getting office workers back to the city's downtown will be key to the area's recovery. >> also today, an important discussion about the budget crisis at san francisco unified. the san francisco's board of supervisors will hold a hearing on the district's finances. sfusd is facing concerns it failed to hire enough special education teachers, with tens of millions of dollars unaccounted for in the school budget. the mayor's new school stabilization team has been asked to lead the investigation. sfusd is facing a $400 million deficit. staffing cuts, school closures and a potential state takeover. >> still ahead. supporting veterans. the event connecting service members to resources throughout santa clara county. >> and you are looking live at the big board at the new york

sacramento today we're going 116 in palm springs. even la closing in on 90 later on this afternoon. back here at home. watch how fast these temperatures warm this morning by 11 a.m. we're all basically in the 80s. then into the afternoon. it just gets dangerously hot out here with numbers about 20 to 25 degrees above average. so 92 in the city, but 105 in santa rosa, 106 in concord, 99 in fremont, 95 in san mateo, 102 in san jose. and it looks like this heat wave will roll on through thursday. temperatures stay dangerously hot through thursday afternoon, and now the weekend is trending hotter as well. we'll show you that

law. here's a look at a few of them. legislation spearheaded by san francisco assembly member phil ting will ban legacy admissions at private nonprofit colleges. the governor also signed a bill from san francisco assemblymember matt haney that will allow cannabis cafes in california and a bill from assembly member dianne pappin of san mateo bans the sale of menstrual products that contain pfas, often called forever chemicals. they are man made chemicals that do not break down naturally. governor newsom was there to congratulate claudia sheinbaum as she became the first ever woman president of mexico. migrants in the area also turned up for support. many hoping that the new leadership

may lead to changes in immigration policies from january to may. of this year, officials recorded over 1 million undocumented migrants traveling through mexico. nonprofits say that one of the challenges that migrants face is ever changing immigration policy on both sides of the border. >> new at six, we could see the end of an era in san francisco's chinatown restaurant. sam wu is set to close. if ownership does not find a new operator in chef. our media partners at the sf standard report, the current owner and chef, is planning to retire soon, and the lease on the building is up in december. the owner isn't exactly sure when the restaurant would close, but it would likely be after the new year in order to start cleaning out the space on clay street. sam wu is known as one of the oldest restaurants in the neighborhood. >> attorney general rob bonta is suing a northern california hospital, accusing it of denying emergency abortion care to patients. bonta alleges that

providence saint joseph hospital in eureka violated state laws when it turned away a pregnant woman who was going to have twins, who was severely bleeding after her water broke early. the woman says that her doctor told her both babies would not survive and she needed an abortion. >> i was told i could not receive emergency abortion care while at providence because of hospital policy. that policy, i was told, prohibited any medical intervention so long as my daughter still had heart tones, unless it was determined that my life was sufficiently at risk. >> she says she had to go to a nearby hospital to receive the abortion. providence saint joseph hospital says it is heartbroken to hear about the patient's experience because the case is in active litigation and due to patient confidentiality, it cannot comment on that matter. >> in the south bay this week, help for hundreds of men and women who have served our country and ended up unhoused.

tomorrow through friday, santa clara county will host their second annual stand down event. it's a resource fair designed to support veterans and their families. according to government estimates, veterans represent 13% of unhoused adults. >> it's important for us, you know, we know what it's like to be able to be coming out of the military and how important it is to get connected to these services right away. it's kind of a full circle for me. i feel like because i attended back in 2018 and now i'm helping set one up for our veterans. >> and this year, the fair is anticipating nearly 2000 veterans. some of the resources the event will offer include a mobile dental clinic, free haircuts and employment services, renewing your driver's license just got easier for some people in california. >> the dmv says if you're 70 or older, you no longer need to take a written test. previously, anybody who had to take a written test when they turned 70 years old. the new rule requires that you have no traffic

violations on your record. the dmv director says the change will keep thousands of people out of dmv offices. >> all right. the golden state valkyries now know when they will get to choose players for the team. the wnba just announced its first expansion draft since 2008. the valkyries will be able to fill most of their roster on december sixth. in an event you can watch on our sister network, espn, the current 12 teams can protect six players on their roster. golden state can pick unprotected players, one from each team. the valkyries will tip off their inaugural season at chase center in may. >> and now for your morning money report. the new iphone 16th may not be selling as well as apple had hoped, according to one analyst. reported by cnn. apple sold 37 million devices in the first weekend of presales. that is down 12% when compared to sales of new iphones during the same period last year. experts say that buyers are waiting to see how the new i feature will play out. many of

those features will not be available until next month. apple will release official sales numbers during its earnings report next month, and taking a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway this morning. and you can see right now we are down 274 points. >> beyonce is starring in a new commercial for san francisco based levi's jeans. and i love to turn them on. there we levi's shared this video of queen b at a laundromat. she pulls her 5-01 jeans and she puts them into the washing machine there. it's part of the brand new reimagined campaign, inspired by the legacy of levi's. beyonce issued a statement saying denim on denim has often been seen through a male lens. so this reimagining campaign, which celebrates the iconic female perspective, is important to her. the commercial uses her song levi's jeans from her recent album cowboy carter.
