why it's okay. okay. today, though, it is going to be hot. once again, our heat wave rolls on for another day. right now we are at the coolest part of our day. so if you're thinking about getting that run in, do it. the next couple of hours before we start getting hot. once again. it is quite warm in our hills, 70s and 80s, right now, 79, in the oakland hills, low 80s in the santa cruz mountains, the east foothills of san jose coming in at 81. we're in the 70s from mount hood to hawkeye in the north bay. so it is quite warm right now. we will find that heat advisory, excessive heat warnings that have been extended until saturday, but they're going to continue to extend it probably until sunday because the weekend is looking very hot today. we'll find temperatures inland well into the 90s, probably about 100 in our hottest cities today, today. so like not certainly the hottest day we've had underneath this heat wave. but still it is quite warm for this time of the year around the bay shoreline. it's a hot afternoon, lots of sunshine, upper 80s to near 90 for daytime highs and then along the coast it will be a mild to warm day. we'll get afternoon sunshine and highs in the mid and upper 70s. let's check in with gloria. see those drive

times? >> happy friday! we are starting to see more traffic right now on the san mateo bridge. you can see a live look right now at our camera, and we're seeing especially more cars heading towards the west bay. now, from the toll plaza to foster city. it will take you 11 minutes and looking live in san jose, nice and quiet here. so far, but heading northbound on 87, approaching 101, it's starting to get a little bit busier. there, but nothing major. no big delays in this area. amanda. >> all right. >> thanks, gloria. the bay area heat wave might be brutal for some people, but we know it can also lead to dangerous situations, especially for vulnerable groups like infants and toddlers. it's important to remember to not leave your children in the car, especially when it's this hot. heat stroke expert jan noll says in the first ten minutes after turning off your car, temperatures inside shoot up to 20 degrees, and that means it would get as hot as 120 degrees. based on yesterday's high in san jose, you or i could be in a car that's 120 degrees, 130 degrees,

and we'd be really uncomfortable very rapidly. >> but within a short amount of time that could be a fatal incident for a child. >> children cannot handle the heat like adults can, because their internal temperature rises 3 to 5 times faster. >> some bay area schools are struggling with the extreme heat because they have limited or no ac. glenwood elementary in san rafael doesn't have air conditioning. two more elementary schools in the district have only partial ac. experts say heat in classrooms has consequences beyond discomfort. >> as temperatures rise, students are less able to pay attention. it's harder for them to retain information. we know that we're seeing, even in places in california, that schools have to send children home early in in extreme heat. that obviously jeopardizes learning. >> the superintendent of san rafael city schools tells abc seven news. hvac projects will begin next summer to add ac to

these schools. we had a we've had a qr code on screen for all of the heat stories. you can use your phone, open the camera and scan the qr code. it'll take you to our website where you'll find the weather forecast, warnings and all of the recent stories we've done about the weather and its impact. >> happening today, governor gavin newsom is promising a major announcement about new funding to tackle encampments across the state, even before knowing the details. advocates for the unhoused in berkeley have formed an encampment outside city hall to protest the governor's expected announcement. they say they're not moving, even if law enforcement tries to remove the. >> if they come and sweep, this will set up another one. there's no there's nowhere for people to go. they can sweep. this will be across the street. they can sweep across the street. we'll be back here. >> the nonprofit. where do we go? set up the encampment. and the number of tents has been growing since saturday. organizers say the space offers a sense of relief and safety for anyone who wants to set up camp there. they're also providing

resources and food to people who need it. >> developing news this morning in the south bay, san jose police say a city council member is the target of a child sexual misconduct investigation. gloria. police have not revealed the details or even identified the council member. but there is a council member who has released a statement to our media partners at the bay area news group, and we do have that information for you, reggie. >> san jose police would only confirm to abc seven news that an investigation is underway involving a member of the council. they would not release any other details. however, multiple sources tell our media partners at the bay area news group that police searched a search warrant. they served a search warrant on council member omar torres and they detained him yesterday. the investigation is related to alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor. torres issued a statement through his attorney to the bay area news group late last night. he said the investigation is based on misinformation and was an act of, quote, retaliation from someone. he asked police to investigate and who is

reportedly extorting and stalking him and the statement went on to say, quote, i want to be clear that i am the victim in this matter. it is heartbreaking that my family, my partner, my team and myself have to respond to such unfounded and defamatory allegations. torres was elected to the council in 2022, and he represents district three, which includes much of the downtown area. abc seven news has reached out to him directly, but we have not received a statement yet. and we also asked san jose mayor matt mahan about the investigation. he has declined to comment on the case, and we will stay on top of this story for you, amanda. >> all right, gloria, thank you. happening today, santa clara county leaders and parents will protest the termination of board of education superintendent mary ann dewan. dewan was fired without cause in a 4 to 2 vote in a closed session wednesday night. she held the position for more than six years after joining the board in 2013. dewan will receive severance pay. the

group protesting is condemning the lack of transparency in the decision. a news conference and protest will be held at 10 a.m. at the office of education. >> happening tomorrow, cal fans will be getting up very early for the first time ever, espn's college game day is coming to berkeley. the popular pregame show starts at 6 a.m. a lot of people will be there for it a lot earlier than that. so if you plan on going. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is here with what you need to know. >> yeah. cal was one of only six power conference teams reggie aqui that had never hosted an espn college game day. so the excitement on and off campus is already being felt there, both for the game itself and the espn college gameday pre-show. and we were there as crews constructed the stage for saturday morning's live show at memorial glade in front of doe library, and students and fans get to surround that set and be part of the show. it airs tomorrow morning from 6 to 9 a.m, and the pit is opening at 330 tomorrow morning. fans are encouraged to arrive early and bart is helping them do just that. trains are going to be starting at 4:00

tomorrow morning and arriving at the downtown berkeley station at five. >> we're going to have five early trains that will stop at a dozen stations to get people to downtown berkeley, which is our closest station to cal, in time for the big pregame show. one of the things we really want to emphasize, though, is that we're only opening 12 stations in addition to downtown berkeley, so you can't just show up at any of our 50 stations and expect to see a train there early. >> now remember, bart parking is free on saturdays at stations that do have parking. so again, the pit for the pregame show opens at 3:30 a.m, and the first 400 fans to get there will get to stand directly behind the stage. now, fans can line up no earlier than 12 a.m. saturday morning, arriving before that does not mean you're going to be first in line or guaranteed access to the pit, but the first 1000 fans will get free donuts and coffee. there's also chances to get free breakfast burritos t shirts. the hurricanes and golden bears play saturday night at 730 on our sister network espn. drew.

>> hey, zach. yeah, college gameday is a lot of fun. i've been to one at penn state many years ago, and it is a wild time. so if you are going to college game day, just know it will be mild in the morning, will be in the upper 60s, lower 70s to start out the day and we warm fast. we're talking hot sunshine later in the afternoon in berkeley, closing in on 90 degrees by saturday afternoon. so just be aware of this. heat wave is not going anywhere. anytime soon. so today is day five. we're looking at a hot weekend ahead. heat relief. not here until next tuesday. so again today those temperatures will warm fast throughout the morning. we see this all week long. by the afternoon we're seeing widespread 80s and 90s around the bay shoreline, upper seconds and our warmest areas inland. so high of 86 today in oakland, 81 in the city, hotter in san jose at 9799 in antioch, 96. in santa rosa, hitting about 93. in san rafael. temperatures turn even hotter here over the weekend. dangerously hot, because these numbers are about 25 degrees above average. saturday and sunday would mark day six and day seven of the

heat wave. so if you're going to hardly strictly in golden gate park for the next couple of days, it will be warm, low to mid 80s. so certainly stay hydrated. there. and as we take a look at the niners forecast on sunday, we're talking dangerously hot temperatures to kick off forecast of 93 degrees by the fourth quarter. we're hitting about 100. so take it easy out there. this weekend. we'll talk about the cooldown on the seven-day reggie coming up in eight minutes. >> and actually take it from here because i have a traffic alert for you this morning. we are seeing a crash at the bay bridge toll plaza. and you can see on our live camera it is a mess out there right now where a lot of crews are there. this is a two vehicle crash blocking the two middle lanes. this is on westbound 80 just before the toll plaza and emergency crews, chp are all there. they've had the flares out. they are blocking right now. the three middle lanes in that area. traffic is actually not too bad right now despite this going on. however, the metering lights are on and traffic is starting to build, so we'll try to get an

california health care workers are getting some good news this month. a long awaited minimum wage increase law will take effect. the san francisco chronicle reports that it was delayed because of budget concerns. the law promised health care workers wages would go up to $25 an hour over the course of several years. some of them may see that full increase sooner than others, depending on where they work. the law is expected to cost the state $1.4 billion in just the first six months. it's a story we've been following since early last month. the controversial arrest of a street vendor on san francisco's embarcadero. police have just released body camera video of the incident to show their perspective of what happened. police say the vending task force was conducting regular enforcement of unpermitted vending when a scuffle broke out. they say the vendor hit a port employee, though we do not actually see that happen in this video. police intervene and handcuffed the vendor as she was resisting. it's not clear whether the vendor knew she was breaking the law. now, this is the original

video of the incident that went viral. police say it is edited and does not show what led up to her arrest. they say if a port worker is harassed or attacked, they will intervene. >> the california department of public health says at least two people in california are sick with bird flu. both of them are people in the central valley who had contact with infected cattle. there is no known connection between the two cases, and no human to human spread has been reported. both patients have reported mild symptoms and neither was hospitalized. the state health department says the risk to the general public is low. >> safeway, albertsons and vons have agreed to pay nearly $4 million to settle allegations over overcharging. across california over overcharging is a tough thing to say. this is across california's seven counties, including several from the bay area, accusing the brands of charging people more than the lowest advertised price as part of the settlement. the grocers will have to implement a

price accuracy program if you end up being overcharged. they'll have to pay you $5 as soon as it's discovered. >> a big honor for the san francisco public library's bay beach platform. bay beach launched last year and is a free music streaming platform, really, that spotlights music from around the nine bay area counties in all genres. for all ages. the national nonprofit urban libraries council gave bay beach its top innovator award. the san francisco public library was one of six libraries to win an award out of more than 200 entries, for the first time in over a decade. >> kylie minogue is going to be in the bay area. she'll perform her new hits and some of her old ones. la la la la la la la la. come on. kylie minogue announced her intention 2025 tour. her first north american tour in 13 years. she'll be at chase center in san francisco on yes, tuesday, april 22nd. you

two vehicle crash. cars are able to get around on the left and the right lanes, but traffic is starting to build as it gets a little bit later this morning and more people head out the door, go to work. so of course we'll keep tracking this for you throughout the morning. but if you do drive through this area, just know there might be a little bit of a delay in this area. >> all right, gloria, thank you. this morning, oakland police and officials from the oakland arena have still not said what caused an hours long delay at the hans zimmer concert last night around 7:30 p.m, as people were arriving for the much anticipated show, the venue was put on lockdown. entry and exit gates were shut down, traffic into and out of the venue stopped. it caused a huge backup, as you can see outside the arena. arena and around the area, and on the foot bridge from bart. as hundreds of concert goers arrived, some told us it wasn't made clear to them what was going on. >> got here in line, and right when we got up to the front gat,

they quickly shut the gates on us and told us that there was a security situation that they needed to handle before they would open it. >> people who were already inside the show were forced to wait while the investigation unfolded. the gates were reopened around 9:00 and the concert did finally go on after that. hans zimmer has another show at the oakland arena on wednesday. >> we're hearing for the first time from the family of a daly city man killed in a shooting last weekend. relatives of a rolando yanga shared this photo of the 60 year old father and husband on sunday night. yanga was followed home, reportedly after a dispute at the gym where he worked, and then shot a 21 year old man and his mother are charged in this case. the yanga family said in a statement that he was taken from us through a senseless act of violence, leaving our hearts shattered and our lives forever changed. a gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with final expenses. it has more than doubled its initial $10,000 goal in less than a day. you can find

a link to this at abc7 news .com. a jury has found a former alameda county sheriff's deputy guilty of double murder in 2022. devin williams killed a couple inside their dublin home because he was jealous of their relationship. it took jurors two days to reach a verdict. prosecutors said williams began dating one of the victims seven months before the double shooting. his defense attorney pushed for a voluntary manslaughter conviction. williams faces a sentence of 50 years to life with just one month to go until election day. >> both vice president harris and former president trump are on the campaign trail, and they're focusing on battleground states. tonight, the vice president will hold a rally in flint, michigan. yesterday in wisconsin, she was joined by republican liz cheney, where she gave a blistering rebuke of the former president. >> i tell you, i have never voted for a democrat, but this year i am proudly casting my vote for vice president kamala harris.

>> today, former president trump heads back to butler, pennsylvania, the site of the first assassination attempt that happened back in july. the secret service says they have made upgrades and changes to their safety protocol at the site. prop 36 is dividing voters in the bay area and this week opposing rallies for the ballot on opposite sides of the san francisco bay. prop 36 would increase sentencing for drug and theft crimes, rolling back previously, criminal justice reforms from 2014. now, supporters of the proposition say a change to policy is necessary. they hope the proposition will bring down crime rates in the city. >> situation right now in san francisco, where there's just a level of public drug use that that we can't tolerate, it's not helping our neighborhoods. it's not helping our economy. but least of all, it's not helping anybody who is struggling with a substance use disorder. >> and meanwhile, those in opposition are worried that voters are not seeing the

potential consequences of the bill. >> we know that it has disastrous consequences. we know that it filled our prisons up. we know that it didn't make us any safer. and if this passes, it will absolutely set us back. >> the public policy institute says that a little more than 70% of californians plan to vote yes on prop 36. governor newsom opposes the bill, but it has gained support among bay area leaders. >> we've been following the story of the popular san francisco tourist attraction that's closing after 60 years. madame tussauds, the wax museum on fisherman's wharf, has shut down. abc seven was in the area last night. there's been a decline in popularity of wax museums over the years. tourists we spoke with say they had memories of the displays inside. >> when i was younger and i think people still go, i think they're fun and they're really cool all the details and stuff. >> fisherman's wharf has struggled since the pandemic. many businesses have left and those that remain say visitors are spending less money. they also say the unhoused are

tomorrow night and the pre show happening in the morning before, there's just so much excitement surrounding this. now take a look at construction video we shot yesterday morning as crews were literally setting the stage for tomorrow morning's live show. that stage is at memorial glade in front of doerr library, and students and fans get to surround that set and be part of the show. it airs tomorrow morning from 6 to 9 a.m. the pit is opening at 330 tomorrow morning, and fans are encouraged to arrive early. bart is in on this fun and starting trains early to help the fans get there. >> ordinarily, on saturdays we start service at 6 a.m, but in this case we're actually going to be running trains starting a little bit after 4 a.m. we're going to have five early trains that will stop at a dozen stations to get people to downtown berkeley, which is our closest station to cal. >> now, keep in mind bart is only opening 12 stations in addition to downtown berkeley, so check out bart.gov to make sure you have the timing and information. but overall, here's what you need to know. again, the pit for the pregame show opens at 3:30 a.m. the first 400
