3:00 pm
y-to-play scheme that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need. breaking news for you. a fire in lake county has exploded in size
3:01 pm
in just the last few hours, setting off evacuation orders. it's grown from just two acres at noontime to 200 acres as of 230. this comes as extreme heat continues to scorch northern california and the bay area. the heat a major concern into the weekend with huge events happening across the bay. here's video from sky seven showing day one of the hardly strictly bluegrass festival. the free three day festival and high profile football games are expected to draw tens of thousands of people outside in the heat. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. first, let's get to that breaking news. the glen haven fire, they call it, and it is spreading rapidly in lake county. it broke out around noon on a hillside off harvey boulevard in glen haven, but it's exploded in size in just the last three hours. video from alert, california cameras show a large plume of smoke as the fire burns across 200 acres. it is setting off mandatory evacuations with cal fire saying
3:02 pm
there is an immediate threat to life. cal fire has 18 engines, hand crews, helicopters and several fixed wing aircraft responding to this fire. we are monitoring this developing situation and we'll bring you updates as they come in. now to our other big story the heat. it is not stopping thousands of fans from attending the first day of san francisco's hardly strictly bluegrass festival. the three day event kicked off in golden gate park this afternoon, but the heat is only expected to get worse over the weekend, so if you're planning on going to the festival, try to stay hydrated, wear your sunscreen and take breaks in the shade. and niner fans better get ready as well, because the game this weekend at levi's stadium could break a record. the national weather service says temperatures could reach 92 degrees inside the stadium sunday afternoon. kickoff is at 105, so fans will likely be in their seats during the hottest point of the day, and this would
3:03 pm
be a record for 40 niners. game at levi's. always a hot place by design and location, but right now the record is 87 degrees, so if you're going to the 40 niners game again, stay hydrated, bring your sunscreen and wear loose fitting, light colored clothing. the extreme heat is only adding to the critical fire weather conditions. we're expecting this weekend. it's already underway, but parts of the bay area are now under a red flag warning. let's check in now with abc seven news meteorologist drew tuma for a timeline of what we can expect this weekend from our mount tam cam. >> you have hazy sunshine out there, a spare the air is in effect, so our accuweather headlines do call for our heat wave. it does continue. 80s and 90s later today. so today is not the hottest day under this heat wave. but still it is very warm out there. today is day five of our heat wave, a red flag warning was just issued for the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. we'll look at those details in one second. and again, it gets even hotter here
3:04 pm
this weekend. dangerous heat is back. we're talking widespread 90s and above 100 degrees in most cities. so here's the heat alerts, the excessive heat warning, the heat advisory. this continues. it's been extended until tomorrow night. it will most certainly be extended into sunday because there is no relief coming our way this weekend. let's talk about the red flag warning. it's just been issued for the east bay hills. the santa cruz mountains, the east foothills in the south bay. we will see a bit of an offshore wind overnight tonight. not incredibly strong. gusts to about 25mph, but it will bring humidity levels down to about 8%. combine that with overnight lows basically in the 80s and in the 90s. that's a recipe that if any fires do start, they could spread quickly. so we'll keep our eyes on that. just know it's not a long duration event, but there is a critical period early tomorrow morning where we do have elevated fire danger. so this afternoon it's warm to hot out there any evening plans you have, it's going to be very mild still and even late tonight. we're not seeing too much of a cool breeze kick in, just like
3:05 pm
the past couple of nights. we don't cool off all that much. so today, 80s and 90s around the bay shoreline, our heat advisories continue. the excessive heat warnings 96 in santa rosa, 86 in oakland, 97 in san jose, inland, we're 98 to about 100 degrees in the city. we're back into the 80s overnight tonight. we're not finding much in the way of a big cooldown. most of us settle in the 60s and 70s and again in our hills in the santa cruz mountains. the east bay hills will likely stay in the 80s and 90s overnight tonight, so it is quite warm. look at temperatures tomorrow afternoon. the heat is going to spike once again. we're back into the mid 90s for oakland, back to about 100. in san jose, the north bay, the inland east bay, those temperatures about 25 degrees above average. so it will be hot tomorrow, dangerously hot. and then we repeat that again on sunday. so we have a lot going on across the region over the weekend. first, we have hardly strictly starts today in the city, golden gate park through the weekend. we're talking low and mid 80s in the park. that is very warm for this time of the year. we'll take it to berkeley
3:06 pm
tomorrow. college game day is at cal. it's a mild morning. look at the afternoon. we're getting close to 90 degrees in berkeley for daytime highs. that is very warm in the east bay. now the 40 niners. we're likely going to set a record here. the hottest it's ever been at kickoff is 87 degrees. we'll smash that on sunday at 93. and then by the fourth quarter we're flirting with 100. so you do want to take it easy out there. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the heat wave continues today. rolls on through the weekend. then relief is here tuesday. that will make an eight day heat wave that finally snaps here by tuesday afternoon. >> all right i mean everybody's sighing right? >> stay on top of the weather by visiting abc seven news.com. scan that qr code on your screen to jump to the page with the latest warnings and all the recent stories that we have on this heat wave. santa clara county educators and parents are protesting the termination of superintendent mary ann dewan. dozens gathered outside the santa clara county office of education this morning to show their support for dewan. she was
3:07 pm
fired without cause in a 4 to 2 vote during a closed session wednesday night. the protesters are condemning the lack of transparency in this decision. >> this blatant lack of transparency undermines our children's education and erodes trust in the integrity of our education system. >> dewan held the position for over six years after joining the board in 2013. she will be receiving severance pay. san jose police say a city council member is the target of a child sexual misconduct investigation. several sources tell our media partners at the bay area news group. police served a search warrant on council ■member omar torres and detained him yesterday. we're learning the investigation is related to alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor. torres issued a statement through his attorney this morning. he said the investigation is based on misinformation and was an act o, quote, retaliation from somebody. he asked police to investigate for extorting and stalking him. the statement went
3:08 pm
on to say, quote, i want to be clear that i am the victim in this matter. it's heartbreaking that my family, my partner, my team and myself have to respond to such unfounded and defamatory allegations. torres was elected to the council in 2022. he represents district three, which includes much of the downtown area. san jose mayor matt mehan has declined to comment on the case. a bomb scare caused an hours long delay at the hans zimmer concert at the oakland arena last night. officers say they are now investigating two separate threatening calls. the venue was put on lockdown around 730, just as people were starting to arrive for the show. entry and exit gates were shut down. traffic in and out of the venue stopped. it caused a huge backup outside the arena and on the footbridge from bart, as hundreds of concert goers arrived. some told us it wasn't made clear to them what was going on. >> got here in line and right when we got up to the front gate, they quickly shut the
3:09 pm
gates on us and told us that there was a security situation, that they needed to handle before they would open it. >> investigators did not find any bombs during their sweep of the area. the gates were reopened around 9:00 and the concert did finally go on after that. hans zimmer has another show at the oakland arena on wednesday. one of the other big events happening around the bay area this weekend is college game day. espn's popular pregame show is in berkeley. for the very first time, and the hype and excitement are building. students and fans are counting down until the show and of course, the big game. here's abc seven news reporter zach fuentes on the cal campus. >> most people knew that this game was coming, but for many of them now, seeing this set up behind me, it's become that much more real. a lot of the passersby are stopping to take pictures, stopping to take it in. take a look at all of this. as you can see behind me right now, they're being kept a little bit far away from it. it is taped off right now for security reasons, for safety purposes. that was disappointing to some students who were out here
3:10 pm
earlier with tents, planning to camp out for about 24 hours to try to be some of the first people behind the stage for the pre-show. they weren't allowed to do that. but still, the excitement here can be felt, and for good reason too. this is such a big event like you were saying. cal was one of only six power conference teams that had never hosted an espn college game day, so the show is going to air tomorrow morning from 6 to 9. the pit is opening at 330 tomorrow morning, and fans have been encouraged to arrive early. but as i mentioned, some arrived a little too early. we met with some of the students who told me that they got here with their tents at 6:00 this morning to try to be among the first in line, and even though they were told they had to leave their determination to be here early and get a spot behind the stage for the pre-show is still very strong. >> people don't think of cal football as like that big, but it's honestly a once in a lifetime thing. so we're super we're super stoked. everyone's really excited. yeah. >> so here's what you need to know. if you want to be part of the pre-show. like i said, the
3:11 pm
pit for the pregame show opens at 3:30 a.m. the first 400 fans to get there will get to stand directly behind the stage, and fans can line up no earlier than 12 a.m. saturday morning. so don't bring your tents or anything before that, because arriving before that time does not mean you're going to be first in line or even guaranteed access to the pit. but the first 1000 fans will get free donuts, coffees. there's also going to be a chance to get free breakfast burritos and t shirts. so there's a whole bunch of reasons for students out here and everyone to be excited for this pre-show. but then of course, for the game itself. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right. so if you want to go to college game day or the cal miami game, there are extra bart trains running for your convenience. and if you plan to drive, there are some parking restrictions you should know about. for more on all of that, here's abc seven news anchor amanda delcastillo. >> get ready! espn's college game day kicks off tomorrow at cal, and i'm here with everything you need to know. since the big game is berkeley bound. there's sure to be plenty
3:12 pm
of activity around campus. this map shows you areas expected to see some action, of course. memorial glade and memorial stadium. let's first get you there. zooming in on bart, it is worth noting bart parking is free on saturdays, and the agency is launching lines much earlier with limited morning service saturday to get people to the downtown berkeley station by 5 a.m. we're talking only 12 of bart's 50 stations will be up and running for the special event, and depending on where you start, your train could depart as early as 4:08 a.m. bart will have extra event trains to handle the crowds, and once you do get to the downtown berkeley station, head east from bart and follow directions for memorial glade. we know that there are four entrances, two along university drive and two on glade way that will get you to the college game day action. >> game day is such a unique experience. it's never been to cal before, so we really don't
3:13 pm
know what we're going to be seeing in terms of the crowds. but what we do know is there's so much enthusiasm for this. if you look at the cal fan base, they are fired up for this. it's a special opportunity for them. and we want to do everything we can to provide access to allow as many people as possible to get there in the most convenient manner that we can. >> and for those of you planning to drive, good luck. there are four on campus parking garages free of charge, available to fans on game day. however, it is important to note vehicles must be moved by 11 a.m. or you could be ticketed or towed. i'm amanda delcastillo from abc seven mornings with your look ahead. >> don't get towed. very expensive. well, college game day airs on our sister network espn starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow. the game between the eighth ranked miami hurricanes and the cal bears is also on espn. kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. much more on cal's weekend in the spotlight. you can see from sky seven, espn's college game
3:14 pm
day is taking over the cal campus. the stage is set. a lot of excitement around there. the bears athletic director joined abc seven news today to
3:15 pm
3:16 pm
game day at cal. it's the first time berkeley has been chosen to host the program ahead of a major acc showdown against the miami hurricanes, and cal just joined the acc this season, and it's already generating a lot of buzz putting the bears back in the national spotlight on our midday show today. julian glover and i were joined by the cal athletic director, jim knowlton. >> it's great to be here. lots of excitement on campus and
3:17 pm
hopefully we'll see you tomorrow morning at 330 for the lineup for game day. >> oh, plenty of people will be out there. i know, like alumni from 30 years ago who are going to forgo sleep, you know, with their old sorority sisters and their signs. i know it's a whole thing, but jim, what does it mean for cal to have this right, to have this national spotlight both for cal sports and also the cal community? >> well, i think it's amazing. it's our first home acc football game. so our fans, our football team, our alums, everybody is absolutely excited. and i think for us it's a great opportunity to tell our story not only about our football team, but our athletic department, our olympians and then it's really bringing together the campus, the faculty, the staff, and we'll tell a lot of stories just about what what is the essence of cal. and, you know, we've had some stories with espn about the only people on campus that kept parking are the nobel laureates. and, you know, obviously, the
3:18 pm
play back in 1982 and there's so many great stories. and now we have marshawn lynch as the guest picker. so we have seen this energy that is just permeated the entire campus, which is exciting. yeah. >> you all are bringing out some big guns with folks like marshawn lynch showing up to be the guest picker during college game day. lots of excitement. you mentioned that this is the home opener for acc play for cal. since you all joined the atlantic coast conference. i know a lot of us were kind of scratching our head like cal atlantic coast. that doesn't make sense. there were some reservations, but there was also a lot of excitement about the opportunity and what it could mean. how has it been playing out so far from your perspective? >> it's been fabulous. it's really continued to help us expand on the national and international stage. uh- like schools like cal, where, you know, the acc school is very much value. academics and athletics and i think our student athletes are really enjoying the competition. and,
3:19 pm
and certainly the athletic directors like dan, who have been just fabulous and welcoming us. uh- it's really been smooth transition and exciting for our entire university. >> i know i'm kind of getting used to it at first. it was a weird thought, right? it's like we faced ucla, usc, washington, and it's so weird to have different opponents, but it is definitely exciting as well and pulls in a national audience. okay, jim, we heard you guys pulled out all the stops for this game, like during the show, before the show, after the show, lots of crowd pleasers. >> yeah, we have a lot going on. i was just talking to our swim team that's going to be there in force with their speedos and goggles on, and our entire rugby team is going, and, you know, the chancellor and i, at 4:00 will be handing out donuts. and then at 6:00 we'll be handing out, you know, breakfast burritos. uh- talking to the crowd, getting everyone fired up. and i just think this is a great example of how the
3:20 pm
university can come together. and certainly it's great to have our football program at the center of it. >> well, we know you have a lot of preparing to do for the big game and college game day on cal's campus tomorrow. we're not going to let you go just yet, though, so stick with us, jim, because after the short break, miami's athletic director, dan radakovich will be joining us, and we're gonna get to some game day spirit here. maybe even a little trash talk here on the anchor desk. >> very frie to shake up city hall? in nearly ten years as supervisor,
3:21 pm
mark grew the bureaucracy by authorizing or creating a commission almost every year. he rubber stamped hundreds of millions to homeless nonprofits with zero accountability and orchestrated a pay-to-play scheme that sold out taxpayers to the highest bidder. mark farrell has all the wrong experience for the change we need.
3:22 pm
so we thought we'd have a little fun and engage in some shameless self-promotion and light hearted trash talking. >> okay, so cal athletic director jim knowlton back with us, and now we're joined by miami's athletic director, dan radakovich. and dan, i got a i got a turnover chain here that i'm going to put on for this segment for some good luck here. all right. so they're both
3:23 pm
joining us today. you know talk some spirited trash here between cal and miami. so guys we want to start off with a comparison between the teams. make the case for who has the best mascot. cal bears or the miami hurricanes. dan, we'll start with you. >> well, you know, well, first of all, julian. thanks. and here we go. there we go. for you. uh. that's great stuff. but, you know, sebastian is one of the most iconic, energetic and mischievous mascots in all of college sports. he's also one of the bravest, as the ibis is the last bird to leave prior to a hurricane, and the first to reappear so, you know, we think that we have a pretty brave bird there. i don't know, i don't know what he'd do in a storm. is he going to stay? is he going to go hibernate? we don't know. >> jim, are you going to know what we know what the ibis does. yeah. jim. defend oski, please. our creepy but beloved bear mascot. >> come on now. i was going to
3:24 pm
say our beloved mascot who made his debut in 1941. and as you know, everyone loves oski. and it's amazing to see oski do their work around a football stadium. everyone wants their picture with them and never talks. but his motions and his actions speak louder than words. and if you haven't seen him drink through his eye, it's a sight to behold. >> okay, that's a that's a tough one. we'll call that a toss up right there. i'm just thinking about sebastian doing a cane spell out like we'll see during the game tomorrow. dan. okay, let's talk about game day traditions. who has the best game day traditions? dan i'm thinking about a we got some canes over here. woosh, woosh. there we go. >> how about that? yes. well, you know, there's nothing better. and it started back in the 80s and it's continued forward now. but for the hurricanes to run out with sebastian and the smoke, it's iconic. it's one of the great entrances in college football.
3:25 pm
and certainly something that that we revere at the university of miami as one of our traditions. >> jim, what do you think? what's our favorite? what's your favorite? >> well, i love the victory cannon. you know, obviously the history of the victory cannon is phenomenal. but you can't pass up things like tightwad hill where people go to watch and don't have to pay for tickets. they can watch the game from up above the stadium and certainly our card stunts and march to victory all make a game day absolutely special with the traditions of cal and you know it. you tell a story. you tell a whole world. this is bear territory. >> yeah, and you're right. you can watch from the hill, the drone show. right. i hear we're going to have a drone show tomorrow. that's going to be an amazing drone show. >> i think everybody has to watch this. it will absolutely be exciting. and certainly there'll be a lot of cal branding during that time. totally. >> okay, you guys, how about favorite chemical element on the periodic table that was discovered at your school? oh, come on, this is so cal dan. >> i mean, we're not even going
3:26 pm
to get into that, but how about who has the most beautiful campus i tried, dan, i'm thinking about our beautiful lake right in the middle of campus. the iconic you on the rock? >> well, we do, i mean, you kno, walking on our campus is just like going into a subtropical paradise, you know? and i know that it's unusual, but we have trees on the university of miami campus that grow up and down, you know, those mangrove trees grow up and down, and we have those dotting all over the campus. it's a beautiful little neighborhood right near coral gables, florida, and the beaches are just minutes away. >> all right. we don't have tim. jim, sorry for you to get into the trees. and the beauty of our campus, but people will see it on national tv tomorrow, that's for sure. real quickly, guys. score prediction. i mean, i know we're the underdogs, but i never believe what they say. i'll have you go first. dan 3121 canes let's go baby. >> 3121 cal yes. >> all right. don't go away
3:27 pm
because we'll be right back with
3:28 pm
3:29 pm
it's pretty exciting. like, i'm pretty sure, like, as you can see, like, everybody's here to, like, watch the band perform, like, they watch them every day. and i'm sure that there's going to be a bigger crowd at the game as well. >> cow all the way. you know, 24 over seven. >> yeah, you don't see a chancellor leading the pep rally
3:30 pm
very much. but there you go. some sights and sounds here from cal's pep rally at sproul plaza earlier today. and uc berkeley's new chancellor, rich lyons. certainly fired up. students also made signs ahead of espn's college game day show. and that is, of course, early tomorrow morning. college game day airs on our sister network espn, starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow. the game between the eighth ranked miami hurricanes and the cal bears is also on espn, and kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. thank you so much for joining us. before we go, i just want to remind you that there's that wildfire burning in lake county that broke out this afternoon already there, evacuations and 200 acres have burned. we're >> david: tonight, several developing stories as we come on the air. the economy tonight. the blockbuster new jobs report, surpassing expectations. the stockt
