before noon today and has burned about 300 acres, and a number of spot fires are going. cal fire has many crews, resources and several aircraft responding as winds pick up this evening. they're trying to get a strong containment line around the fire before it gets dark, because they do expect the winds to get stronger after sunset, and they are worried about homes in residential areas toward highway 20. >> and this fire is in the glen haven area area. it's spreading into the clearlake oaks neighborhood with zero containment. many homes are threatened. evacuation orders and warnings are in place for communities in the likely path of the flames. we are closely following this fire and will have more updates to come. >> all right. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> this fire in lake county comes amid hazardous heat conditions. we are now on day five of this bay area heat wave. >> just brutal. we have team coverage with abc seven news reporter suzanne vaughn tracking the various outdoor activities this weekend. and there are a lot of them and how people are keeping cool. >> yes. let's begin, though,

with abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel for the latest on conditions near the fire and the warning. sandhya. yeah, the conditions are not favorable. near the fire. dan and ama, let's take a look at the current conditions. it is 86 degrees relative humidity is low at 16%. the winds are out of the west and they are gusty right now. 17 miles an hour. that westerly wind is pushing the smoke to the east. the biggest concern here is it's going to remain gusty through the next couple of hours. with the low humidity. you have critically dry fuels and that is concerning. a red flag warning is in effect until tomorrow morning for the east bay hills. the santa cruz mountains, parts of lake county. as those wind gusts out of the north northeast through tomorrow morning and relative humidity in the single digits to 25% will continue to keep the fire danger elevated. you see what the temperatures are like in the hills right now? 93 in the oakland hills. now temperatures at the lower elevations, 90s inland 60s and seconds along the coastline. we do have excessive

heat warnings and heat advisories until 11 p.m. tomorrow. this is the kind of heat that could still make you sick. here's a look at those temperatures. triple digits inland. so they're going up 82 degrees in half moon bay and a spare. the air alert has been issued for saturday. as we are expecting some poor air quality. i'll be back with a closer look at this heat wave for the weekend, and a look at some of the events that are happening in just a few minutes. dan. okay, sandy. >> thanks a lot. listen to this. the 40 niners game this sunday is expected to be the hottest nfl game ever played at levi's stadium. the last ten years, temperatures are forecast to be around 95 degrees around the kickoff time. 100 and 5 p.m, and could creep up to 98 degrees. because of that, the team plans to wear alternate uniforms to try to stay cooler on the field. according to the athletic, the niners looked into wearing their all white throwback uniforms, but needed to make that request before the season. so instead they'll wear the throwback red jersey and white pants. their opponents, the arizona cardinal,

plan to wear their all white uniforms in addition to the niners game. >> there are other big events across the bay area. there are street fairs, a parade and a music festival, all in this heat. so for more on what people are doing to beat the heat, let's go to abc seven news reporter suzanne phan, who joins us live from san francisco. suzanne. reporter we saw plenty of people with their hats on, their water bottles in hand today. experts say do what you got to do to stay cool and beat the heat, especially if you plan on spending several hours outside swease you are on the big crowds are turning out for hardly strictly bluegrass this weekend. the free three day music festival is back at san francisco's golden gate park. >> it's six stages. we have over 70 performances over the whole weekend. it's just a wonderful vibe every year. >> there are many outdoor events this weekend and once again, temperatures are expected to soar across the bay area. a big thing to watch out for is heat exhaustion, something our own abc7 meteorologist drew tuma

knows well. >> that's a nice little scar right there. got about 7 to 9 stitches. i suffered heat exhaustion back in 2017 when san francisco hit an all time high of 106, and these heat illnesses can come on you remarkably fast. you may feel fine one minute, and then all of a sudden you just feel your body sweating. >> tumor passed out while riding muni and hit his head. he believes ongoing exposure to heat led to the incident day after day. >> it can really take a toll on your body. maybe day two and three. you're okay with the heat wave, but now we're on day five, going into day six and seven, and it can really take a toll. >> if you are at some of these music events, staying in the shade rather than getting a suntan is probably a good idea at this point. >> at hardly strictly bluegrass, we saw plenty of people ready for the sun like john bryant of livermore got the hat. we saw security guards drinking plenty of water, music goers beating the heat in more ways than one. >> try to take advantage of these beautiful trees and, you know, hit the shade.

>> yeah, it's a good boy with his heavy fur coat. >> four year old german shepherd apollo needs to cool down any and every way he can. we have his water bowl attached to us if we see any running water or any sprinklers, we'll let him run through it. >> but nine times out of ten, he'll lead us to the shade. and then just plop there. >> the best way for all of us to beat the heat is to do what apollo does go into the shade, drink lots of water. >> you got to stay hydrated on these hot days. >> and a lot of these outdoor events, there's going to be water stations. it's all about hydrating as much as you can. live in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> all about hydrating and taking it easy. thanks very much, suzanne. well, one of those big weekend events is at uc berkeley, where the cal football team will face its toughest challenge of the season when it hosts the number eight ranked miami. the game is such a big deal that espn's college game day will actually be there. the show's x account posted this iconic video of cal legend marshawn lynch when he took a golf cart on a celebratory

joyride on the field after a win in 2006, as they announced he will be tomorrow's celebrity guest picker. this is the first time college game day has come to cal, and the excitement on campus is simply electric. and abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is there for us, joins us live with the latest. cornell, this really is pretty exciting. >> it really is. dan. and football frenzy has come to berkeley. this campus definitely pumped up for tomorrow's big game. a pep rally was held here just a few hours ago, all getting ready for tomorrow's big national spotlight pregame show, espn's college game day. berkeley, getting ready to take the field as the center of the college football universe on saturday. who's ready to be miami tomorrow? >> come on, baby. >> a pregame pep rally on campus getting cal bear fans pumped up

for saturday's game versus miami. a new college football conference bringing new energy. >> i think we're completely revamped. cal is back, baby. i'm super excited specifically because this is our first home game with an acc opponent, also a powerhouse within miami and this could be one of the biggest games of the year, if not the biggest game of the year. for cal. >> even cal's chancellor was giving us his best game day moves. oh my gosh, this is a game day of all game days. we are excited for the first time, espn college game day is set to broadcast from memorial glade on saturday morning. students are ready to show their game day spirit. lisette and her friends are making signs for a national audience to see. >> i think everyone right now is really excited because espnw is hosting the first game here and i'm a first year, so like it was really exciting to see that that actually happened in my first year at berkeley. >> but grabbing a spot near the game day stage means getting up early. the pit opens at 3:30 a.m, set two alarms, maybe, right. i'm saying for college

deal for the cal campus. everyone getting ready for football. go, bears! we're live in berkeley. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> go, bears. indeed. just great fun. cornell, thanks so much. now college game day airs on our sister network espn, starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. the game is also on espn at 730 tomorrow night. >> today, governor newsom announced new funding for homeless encampment cleanups and what his office calls stronger accountability measures to help unhoused people across california. abc seven news reporter tim johns sat in the governor's news, sat in on the news conference today. he joins us live from the newsroom with more. tim. >> yeah, lots of interesting things came out of the governor's news conference this morning. but one big thing he emphasized was that accountability. he noted several times that this money from the state to help tackle the homelessness crisis wasn't free. his office expects recipients to adhere to strict rules and regulations while still following a compassionate approach to this issue. in a virtual news conference friday, governor gavin newsom announced

more than $130 million to help combat the state's homelessness crisis. >> we need to take back the streets and these encampment resolution grants are part of that. >> in total, 18 cities and counties across the state will be receiving part of the money. that includes several locations here in the bay area, like san francisco and contra costa county. contra costa county supervisor john gioia says his county plans on using the $5.7 million they're receiving to clear an encampment near the city of san pablo. gioia says the county will provide permanent housing for those currently living in the encampment, as well as wrap around services, something that wouldn't be possible without the state's help. >> it costs money to move people off the street into shelter and permanent housing, especially those who have mental health or substance abuse issues and need supportive services to remain in housing. >> during the news conference, newsom emphasized that the state wants to see tangible results from the money they provide to local jurisdictions. however, he also stressed that compassion for those impacted is also important. a critical point for

aaron rachel of san francisco's coalition on homelessness. >> if we continue to see attitudes that are going to lead to policy making, that is going to criminalize homelessness, that's going to dehumanize those experiencing homelessness, then we're only going to see an increase in those numbers. >> rachel says while the coalition was happy to hear about the money being given out, they also want to make sure it actually gets to those most in need. >> this has been done in the past, and we've seen that those funds don't exactly make it into the programs and organizations that would help pull people out of homelessness and prevent homelessness. >> as for gioia, he says contra costa county looks forward to continuing to work with the state because he knows this money is only one step in solving the problem for good. >> we just need a lot more money to get this done. and the three jurisdictions that are getting funding from the state in this round uh- badly needed. but we will need more. >> in other bay area places that

of a police investigation. according to our media partners at the bay area news group, the investigation involved sexually explicit material and allegations of a relationship with a minor. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has more. >> members of neighborhood associations in downtown san jose say they are shocked to learn about serious allegations within city hall. council member omar torres was pulled over on his way to a vta meeting. he was scheduled to attend thursday, and he was detained and questioned by san jose police. torres's lawyer says police asked him to hand over electronic devices and passwords, but gave no information about the reason for the investigation. however, our media partners at the bay area news group report that this is a criminal investigation into alleged sexually explicit material in a relationship with a minor allegations. torres said in a statement, are unfounded. torres said, quote, i want to be absolutely clear these accusations are entirely false.

i fully cooperated with the san jose police department, including providing my passwords without hesitation as i have nothing to hide. it is disheartening that my family, partner, team and i have to confront such defamatory and baseless claims. torres did not appear at a press conference friday announcing federal funding for a new park in the downtown district that he represents. his chief of staff left without comment, and mayor matt mehan was asked if he had any advance notice of the allegations. >> no, and i can't comment on it any further because it's an ongoing investigation and we have to let our detectives do their jobs. i know that our police department is working very hard to get to the truth. >> truth that. legal analyst stephen clark says may take time to find in a complex investigation. torres's statement said he's the victim here, as the accusations come from misinformation provided to law enforcement in retaliation for a police report he filed against an individual for extortion and stalking. clark says what's found on torres's devices will indicate who is

and now there is a red flag warning for some parts of the bay area. >> abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is back with the details. sandhya. yeah. ama and dan today temperatures have come back down a little bit, but they're going to go up this weekend. and as you mentioned, it's not just the heat wave but the fire danger this weekend. down ten degrees in san jose. it is running cooler from san francisco to oakland to napa. down five degrees along with livermore. it's still hot. inland, don't get me wrong. temperatures in the mid to upper 90s right now it is 70 in the city. as we check out the winds there onshore 20 miles an hour at sfo. this is giving us temporary relief as we look at live doppler seven. some high clouds have been streaming in. they're really not going to help us much in terms of keeping the

heat away. as a matter of fact. high pressure rebuilds and we are in for some dangerous heat again this weekend. so the heat risk will go into the major to extreme category for parts of the bay and inland tomorrow. definitely take it easy as we take a look at some live pictures from our tower cameras. you can see there's plenty of sun out there. a little bit of haze in the atmosphere as well. and from okay, we are talking about aloha friday travel forecast time. if you are flying out of oakland, 95 degrees, it's going to be hot tomorrow and sunny a lot of activity in the hawaiian islands. we're looking at scattered showers. kona 84 degrees 60% chance. kahului looking at sun and showers from mount tam cam. you are certainly seeing the haze. spare the air for tomorrow. dangerous heat wave expected to continue this weekend. weekend records are likely high fire danger with hot, dry, breezy conditions in our hills and next week we do have cooler weather arriving. i'll show you that in the accuweather seven day forecast. this evening 620 you're looking

case tomorrow. sunny and very warm. upper 80s still bright on sunday, but the temperature will come down a little bit for college game day in berkeley. a mild start at 9 a.m. in the 70s, quickly warming up into the 80s and eventually the 90s. it's going to get hot there. temperatures will slowly drop off in the evening, and for the niners game at levi's stadium sunday 95 at kickoff, that is well above what they're expecting. typically, it could break a record as we go into the fourth quarter. dangerous heat 98 degrees. and for the castro street fair on sunday in the city, mainly clear. it's going to be warm in the mid 80s and then turning mild later on in the evening. the accuweather seven day forecast. drink plenty of water. try to find some shade. a cooling center ac, anything you can do to beat the heat because it's heat and fire danger tomorrow. hottest day of the next seven days. still hot on sunday, but by monday, temperatures begin to back off. and then tuesday all areas cool as a fog returns. the middle
