lawsuit against stephanie lazarus in 2016 and won a judgment of $10 million. >> david: it will be four months before stephanie lazarus is eligible for a new parole hearing. that is urprogram for tonight. i'm david muir. thanks for watching. >> deborah: i'm deborah roberts. from all of us here at "20/20" and abc news, good night. a wildfire definitely did extensive damage to at least one house tonight in lake county. the fire took off in the searing heat, and winds fanned the flames. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. that fire started just before noon today and has burned more than 400 acres with a number of

hotspots. cal fire crews and several aircraft responded to try to get the upper hand before nightfall. >> but containment is only at 10% right now. the fire is in the glen haven area of lake county. this map shows evacuation orders in red and evacuation warnings in yellow. cal fire crews are worried about homes near highway 20, so we're right on that border of the red flag warning that was established today for southern lake county. >> so that's a combination that could lead to erratic fire behavior and rapid fire growth. and we've seen that a little bit. >> at least two buildings have already been confirmed as destroyed. about 2500 homes are currently at risk. >> all right a live look outside tonight at san francisco. and there is no sign of the fog anywhere. it's a pretty steamy night in the city. >> where's the fog? come fog, please. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at the current conditions. and also what those firefighters are facing in lake county. sandhya. yeah. dan and ama. we take a look at the conditions near the fire lines and things have

improved. temperature is going down at 76 degrees. relative humidity coming up 26%. and the winds are dialing back a bit. gusts to 13 miles an hour out of the west. that westerly breeze is certainly helping to increase the humidity. unfortunately, it's going to be a hot couple of days ahead for that area before they see some cooling and the winds will remain on the gusty side through the night going into tomorrow morning. it's the very reason why a red flag warning is in effect for our east bay hills in the santa cruz mountains because of the offshore gusty winds and low humidity that the fire danger is elevated. it is not only high, but you're also dealing with critically dry fuels. look at the winds right now. big rock ridge, 21 miles an hour. this is what is concerning. the other thing is this weekend's heat wave prompting an excessive heat warning for many areas shaded in pink, including san francisco. areas shaded in orange are under a heat advisory. those temperatures are going to soar once again hotter than today.

and that means the risk of heat related illnesses will be higher as well. take a look at the temperatures 104 in fairfield tomorrow. triple digits concord, livermore, san jose and santa rosa 95. oakland, 90, in san francisco 82 and half moon bay a spare. the air alert has been issued for saturday as the air quality will decline in parts of the bay area. it will be poor. i will be back to let you know exactly when we'll break out of this heat wave. coming right up. all right, sandhya, thank you. it is sizzling in the south bay as well, but the heat didn't seem to stop people tonight. events went on as planned. from outdoor movie night to high school football games. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there as people sweated it out. >> the high school football games at santa teresa high school in san jose played on in the heat new this season at schools across the state is this tool called a wet bulb globe temperature? >> it's a good piece of mind.

and then that we have a number to go off of. >> it measures direct sunlight, temperature, wind speed and other factors to determine heat stress for outdoor activities. on wednesday, water polo and football had to change their playing times. >> football pushed their practice back almost two hours. a couple of days this week so that they could practice in safe conditions. if people weren't in the stands, they were at the snack bar. >> we're selling a lot of bottled water today. snow cones are super popular not far from the school. >> families came out for a spooktacular movie night. >> we love hocus pocus, so any chance to come see it? especially for free outside? >> we're there. jennifer lindberg and her daughter love this time of the year when it's cooler. >> if i didn't see the calendar saying october, i would think it was june or july right now, for sure. >> rosalina lopez brought her two daughters dressed as their own version of the sanderson sisters. >> right now, it doesn't feel like fall. it feels like summer more because you know, the hot weather. >> they made plans outside of san jose this weekend. we're

series of scheduled repairs that need lane closures on the central freeway. the connecting area of road is located by san bruno, san bruno avenue, and rickard street, next to the portola neighborhood. expect delays and take a detour at the seventh street offramp. it reopens by 5 a.m. on monday. and in the east bay, part of southbound 680 will be closed all weekend. caltrans is going to repave the road several lanes from acosta boulevard in san ramon to 580 in pleasanton are shut down until 4 a.m. monday. caltrans closed this section for work two weeks ago and will be closing it again in another two weeks. >> the bay area jewish community is facing potential threats as they're in the middle of the celebrating the high holidays, beginning this week with rosh hashanah and all of the one. all of this with the backdrop of a one year mark since hamas's attack in israel approaches. abc seven news reporter tara campbell reports that temples across the bay area are beefing up security. >> the sights and sounds of the

october seventh hamas attack on israel, now nearly one year later, federal agencies warning the anniversary could fuel violence. >> we're paying attention to security needs all year long and of course, they're usually heightened at the high holidays. >> and given the anniversary of october 7th, even more so. >> the jewish community federation manages security across northern california and says preparations are well underway, even though there are no specific or credible threats. >> we're always worried about lone actors. >> in a joint statement, the fbi and department of homeland security saying monday's anniversary, quote, may be a motivating factor for violent extremists and hate crime perpetrators to engage in violence or threaten public safety. and at synagogues across the bay area, they're working to help people feel safe, including at temple sinai in oakland. >> when we have security guards to also have folks from our community serving as ushers who are familiar faces, who are

greeting people, welcoming them as much as possible, welcoming them by name, and just so that people feel that sense of being welcomed, in addition to the reality of the world we live in. >> and that reality includes planned pro-palestinian protests across the u.s. as well as the bay area police and other law enforcement officials need to be on guard for this, and they need to allow peaceful expression to happen while also ensuring that protesters and counter-protesters don't become so engaged that it devolves into violence. and while the experts say protests can be tough to predict, politics at home and rising violence in the middle east could be factors. >> now that you have this new war on the northern front in lebanon, now that you have an election coming up and you're just going to have polarization ratcheted up even even further here in the united states, i wouldn't be surprised if you see broader protest on the streets as well as on college campuses. >> meanwhile, the rabbi is hopeful none of this will deter

berkeley campus. it's a big weekend. as espn's college day is visiting cal for the first time ever, and that is adding extra excitement for tomorrow's game. cal legend marshawn lynch will be the celebrity guest picker. the golden bears face quite a challenge, though, as they host the eighth ranked miami hurricanes. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard went to the cal campus when the band today was getting them fired up. >> berkeley getting ready to take the field as the center of the college football universe on saturday. who's ready to be miami tomorrow? >> come on baby.

>> a pregame pep rally on campus. getting cal bear fans pumped up for saturday's game versus miami. a new college football conference bringing new energy. >> i think we're completely revamped. cal is back, baby. i'm super excited specifically because it's our first home game with an acc opponent. also, a powerhouse within miami, and this could be one of the biggest games of the year, if not the biggest game of the year for ca. >> even cal's chancellor was giving us his best game day moves. oh my gosh, this is a game day of all game days. >> we are excited. >> for the first time, espn's college game day is set to broadcast from memorial glade on saturday morning. students are ready to show their game day spirit. lisette and her friends are making signs for a national audience to see. >> i think everyone right now is really excited because espn is hosting the first game here, and i'm a first year, so like it was really exciting to see that that actually happened in my first year at berkeley. >> but grabbing a spot near the gameday stage means getting up early. the pit opens at 3:30 a.m, set two alarms, maybe,

waymo's will look a little different in the coming years. waymo and hyundai announced a partnership that will introduce hyundai ioniq five electric vehicles to waymo's fleet of self-driving cars. road testing waymo's technology in ioniq five will begin in 2025. the companies expect the cars to become available to waymo one robotaxi riders in the years after that. waymo has previously partnered with chrysler and jaguar. a well loved east bay nursery, annie's annuals and perennials has suddenly closed. they closed their doors in richmond yesterday, announced it the heartfelt letter to the community, the owner says she is facing significant health issues, making it impossible to continue operations. talks with potential buyers make her hopeful. the brand legacy and its offerings can live on. >> new at 11 tonight, salmon have been spotted in the klamath river for the first time in decades. according to the chronicle, scientists with the nonprofit california trout spotted chinook salmon using a

sonar camera. the salmon were migrating upstream, past where the iron gate dam used to be. this would mark the first time in more than 100 years that salmon have migrated up the river. back in august, the removal of four dams along the river was finished. a california trout says this will help restore the klamath and the declining salmon population. so it's encouraging to see stars diego luna and gael garcia. bernard bernal are teaming up again, but this time on the small screen in a history making show. the creators and cast of la maquina maquina rather reunited for a red carpet premiere in hollywood last night. the stars would not hold back their excitement as this marks hulu's first original series completely in spanish. we chatted with luna about his physical transformation, playing a boxing manager, helping garcia bernal's character with his final fight. >> it was painful to get the character on, but it was, it

just dragging on. so this weekend, be prepared for it. i do want to show you the upside to what we're dealing with. >> look at this view. i mean, this is $1 million view from our mount tam cam looking at san francisco. it is sparkling tonight. here's another vantage point from sutro tower. unfortunately, this dangerous heat wave will continue with weekend records. likely high fire danger, hot, dry, breezy in the hills. and next week cooler weather arrives. can't arrive soon enough as we all can relate to that. high temperatures today did come down, but it was a record setting 98 in san jose. san jose had a record every single day since monday of this week, 101 in livermore, but most other areas were between the 60s and the 90s. those temperatures are going up that trough that kind of dropped our temperatures today by weakening the ridge. it's out of here. so high pressure is going to build back. and as it does, we are in for heat risk for tomorrow. it's going to be in the major to extreme category. reds and

purples, bayside and inland. so be careful out there. the heat can be taxing on you. stay hydrated and keep cool. temperatures right now in the 60s and 70s, we did have some high level clouds coming through here today, which added a little humidity to the air. tomorrow's forecast inland areas in the morning will begin with sunshine 70 to 90, eventually into the triple digits right around the bay in the mid 60s. calm conditions in terms of the winds there. 80s to 90s and then along the coastline. upper 50s quickly warming up into the 70s at noon and 80s by the afternoon and early evening. your temperatures first thing in the morning, mid 50s to the low 70s. most areas will start off clear, except for some high level clouds just kind of streaming through the bay area. they're harmless, unfortunately, not going to bring us any rain. that dangerous heat wave with us tomorrow. 104 in gilroy, 100 in san jose and los gatos, 98 in santa clara, 98 in redwood city, 84 in pacifica. the sun will be

shining. it's going to be 90 degrees in san francisco, almost 20 degrees above where you should be for this time of year. 88 in the sunset district. plenty of triple digits from san rafael to santa rosa to sonoma. 88 at stinson beach 90 sausalito east bay, berkeley, oakland. mid 90s 96 fremont. head inland and it is definitely going to get hot there. a scorcher 104 in fairfield, 103 concord and livermore. all right. hardly. strictly bluegrass is happening in golden gate park, and you would expect it to be nice and sunny and maybe a little fog. not this time around. it's going to be very warm tomorrow. 88 degrees. there will be plenty of sun dropping off into the mid 80s on sunday. now college game day cal 9 a.m. mild in the morning with a few clouds. hard to believe, but it's going to be a hot and sunny one by 5 p.m. 94 degrees. still warm late at night, so definitely dress accordingly. and for the niners game at kickoff, it's going to be a hot start. 95 degrees fourth quarter. we're talking about dangerous heat with plenty of sun. one last stop here a lot

happening. the castro street fair on sunday as well. warm, mostly clear, upper 70s in the city. temperature rising into the low and mid 80s. so it's going to be warm and sunny and then eventually turning mild. but here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. i do have good news. after two more triple digit days, dangerous heat wave continues. monday we finally get out of the triple digits. it's still going to be hot inland. the coast cools, temperatures really moderate on tuesday and then as we head towards the mid and latter part of the workweek, we're going to be in the 80s. so a big change coming your way as the fog rolls back in and the temperatures drop off. the coast will be in the 60s. quite a change when you go from 82 saturday to 62 next friday. we're talking a 20 degree drop and we like the change. >> we want the change. >>

the 49 ers are dealing with a rash of injuries. the schedule is not kind. the niners play the cardinals and then seattle. so if you squeeze in the patriots game it will be three games in just 12 days. fred warner had the pick six last week. he and george kittle are questionable limited in practice but will probably give it a go. fred was looking pretty good running today. now after arizona on sunday, only three days of rest and a travel day to seattle for thursday night football. george kittle with advice for some of his younger teammates. >> when we played on sunday, you're playing three games in 12 days and that's a lot of football. so like what coach shanahan has always preached since i've been in the league, and it took me a while to understand that it was like sleep is the most important
