biggest college football games in cal's history. a look at how they're getting ready for the national stage. and a wildfire did extensive damage to at least one house tonight in lake county. the fire took off in the searing heat, and the winds fanned the flames. and that heat is expected to last through the weekend. what to expect as the temperatures stay high and when they might start to come down. good morning everybody. it's saturday, october fifth. lisa is back with us. great to have you. thank you. >> yes. and i brought more heat. you sure did. yes. the heat is going to spike over the weekend. we saw just a little bit of relief along the coast yesterday, but overall, this has been quite the stretch, hasn't it? where we have no fog this morning. and a red flag warning continues until 9:00 this morning for the hills of the east bay. this east santa clara hills, with those light winds gusts up to 25 miles an hour. so that will expire. but we're still left with major to extreme heat with our excessive heat

warning for the east bay, the south bay, and the advisories in our inland north bay communities. so once again, as temperatures climb to above yesterday's readings, we're starting out mild 67 in concord, 68 in hayward. so compared to yesterday, 13 degrees warmer in novato. so plan on another scorcher today. it's a quick warmup by noontime. we're in the low 90s. and you can see all those 100 seconds in our inland valleys. stephanie. >> all right lisa. thank you. speaking of the heat, fire danger continues up north where a wildfire is burning. it started just before noon yesterday and has burned more than 400 acres with multiple spot fires. cal fire crews and several aircraft responded to try to get the upper hand last night. but containment is only at 10% this morning. the fire is in the glen haven area of lake county, and we had a map earlier showing you the evacuation orders in red and the evacuation warnings in yellow will get that up here in a moment. cal, fire

crews are worried about homes near highway 20. >> so we're right on that border of the red flag warning that was established today for southern lake county. so that's a combination that could lead to erratic fire behavior and rapid fire growth. and we've seen that a little bit. >> at least two buildings have already been confirmed as destroyed. about 2500 homes are currently at risk. it is sizzling everywhere. but the heat didn't seem to stop. people in the south bay events went on as planned, from outdoor movie nights to high school football games. here's abc seven news reporter lauren martinez. >> the high school football games at santa teresa high school in san jose played on in the heat new this season at schools across the state. is this tool called a wet bulb globe temperature? >> it's a good peace of mind. and then that we have a number to go off of. >> it measures direct sunlight, temperature, wind speed and

alameda county voter guide. the san francisco chronicle is reporting the mayor failed to provide a statement opposing the effort to recall her from office. the space for her office rebuttal and the voter information guide mailed this week is now blank. her spokesman says the mayor's response fell through the cracks. shengtao will campaign against the recall with a rally at rockridge bart station tomorrow. we're getting a look at a dramatic water rescue near the lake merritt channel. oakland police released body camera footage. take a look. >> hold on to that rope. hold on. >> hold on to that rope, sir. hold on to that rope. i'm going to pull you in over here, man. oh, you let go! all right. right there. he's right there. yeah, he's right there. where's he at? right here. right here. >> it happened early last sunday morning. a person was in distress in the water. as you see when pulling the person with a rope did not work an officer swam out into the water and

pulled them back to shore, saving their life. the individual is recovering at a hospital. happening right now. the san francisco. highway 101 connector is closed for the weekend. this ramp for drivers traveling north into the city closed at 10:00 last night. urgent repairs are needed to a damaged concrete barrier and a railing. it's the first of a series of scheduled repairs that need lane closures on central freeways. the connecting area of the road is located by san bruno avenue and rickard street. it's right next to the portola neighborhood. you can expect delays and take a detour at the seventh street offramp, and it will reopen by 5 a.m. on monday. in the east bay, part of southbound i-680 will be closed all weekend. caltrans is going to repave the road. several lanes from acosta boulevard and san ramon to i-580 in pleasanton are shut down until 4 a.m. on monday. caltrans closed this section for work two weeks ago, and they'll be closing it again

in another two weeks. well, one of the big events happening around the bay area this weekend is college game day. espn's popular pregame show is in berkeley for the very first time, and the excitement is building. students and fans are counting down until the show and the historic game. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is live on the cal campus where the set is up and running. j.r. how's it going out there? >> reporter well, it's been lou. it's loud right now as the music is playing. these students, many of them have been here all night. and before we talk with some of them i want to show you what the crowd looked like. we are talking about hundreds, if not thousands of students. many of whom got here late last night. the show starts at 6 a.m. this morning on espn. goes till nine, but then the game isn't till tonight. but this is first time ever that we've seen something like this. so you got your signs out here today? yeah. we do. >> yeah. >> when you heard that they were

coming, what was your thought? i started making my sign right away. you start making it right away. and a week later, we have go bears. yeah. this is one of those where they decided last week that this college game day crew, which is like the biggest college football program in the nation, came out here. do you think cal even has any sort of chance against miami? >> any given saturday? go bears obviously have some of the sports fans, and then we have the sorority over here. >> now, now, you folks got here, what, a little while ago. >> yeah. so we recently just got here, but a lot of our sisters have been here since the entire day. yesterday. they were camping out in moffitt and they just they literally got front of barricade. >> and when you heard there was food, you're like, oh, i'm definitely going to come. >> exactly, exactly. it's so good to see everybody out here and everyone's showing up and showing out. energies are high and it seems like it's going to be a good time. >> my thought was like, you know, but you start this early and the game's not till 730. you're like, i got a whole day. like, do you last to the game?

team in the south bay. a san jose city council member says he's innocent despite being the target of a police investigation. according to our media partners at the bay area news group, the investigation involves sexually explicit material and allegations of a relationship with a minor. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has the story. >> members of neighborhood associations in downtown san jose say they are shocked to learn about serious allegations within city hall. council member omar torres was pulled over on his way to a vta meeting. he was

scheduled to attend thursday, and he was detained and questioned by san jose police. torres's lawyer says police asked him to hand over electronic devices and passwords, but gave no information about the reason for the investigation. however, our media partners at the bay area news group report that this is a criminal investigation into alleged sexually explicit material in a relationship with a minor. allegations. torres said in a statement, are unfounded. torres said, quote, i want to be absolutely clear these accusations are entirely false. i fully cooperated with the san jose police department, including providing my passwords without hesitation, as i have nothing to hide. it is disheartening that my family, partner, team and i have to confront such defamatory and baseless claims. torres did not appear at a press conference friday announcing federal funding for a new park in the downtown district that he represents. his chief of staff left without comment, and mayor matt mehan was asked if he had any advance notice of the allegations. >> no, and i can't comment on it any further because it's an

ongoing investigation and we have to let our detectives do their jobs. i know that our police department is working very hard to get to the truth. >> truth that legal analyst steven clark says may take time to find in a complex investigation. torres's statement said he's the victim here, as the accusations come from misinformation provided to law enforcement in retaliation for a police report he filed against an individual for extortion and stalking. clark says what's found on torres's devices will indicate who is right and who is wrong. >> was there child sexual abuse material? were there inappropriate pictures exchanged or inappropriate conversations? what was said between the parties? what was the intent of those comments? that will be very key here. >> torres says his office remains fully operational as the investigation continues in san jose. dustin dorsey abc seven news. >> a scam has been discovered at one of san francisco's most popular tourist destinations. the san francisco municipal transportation agency is warning

people to watch out for a fake qr code. the qr code says phone pay sf. mta says they found at least five of their machines with the fraudulent qr sticker. people can visit the sfmta website to learn how to correctly pay for parking. the agency does not know if any visitors were affected by this scam, but something to look out for. california's plan to connect more underserved communities with high speed internet can now be put into motion. the biden-harris administration announced it has approved california's internet for all initiative. that means the state can begin implementing this program using funds from the federal government's broadband equity access and deployment, or beed program. california was allocated $1.8 billion in funding to improve internet infrastructure. >> california stands ready to put these funds to work bolstering our economy, building durable broadband infrastructure and generating quality jobs.

morning to you. you know, we had a bit of a break with a breeze yesterday for the time being. and then that kind of lightened up. but we are back to excessive heat. we have been. but we're also going to see the temperatures spike today. tomorrow, before we see things really begin to change by later on tomorrow, with some fog and certainly into next week. it is 68, in san rafael. look at these mild numbers. 67 in concord, upper 50s palo alto and 58 in santa rosa. another gorgeous view outside the sun coming up after 7:00. the weekend records are likely as the dangerous heat wave continues. it picks up again today and sunday. the high fire danger with hot, breezy and dry conditions in the hills almost as dry as we get. but we will be looking for that fog to return. a cooldown will be in place and we'll be looking at that cooler weather really getting into play by tuesday for our inland valleys, but sooner than that for those of you closer to the coast so hardly strictly this afternoon in san

francisco. wow, it's a warm one. upper 80s for today and you can see just a couple degrees cooler for sunday at 86. and those light north winds. so college game day we've been talking all about it over in berkeley and it has been hot. so we'll continue that trend with the mild morning 9:00 just a few clouds out there, 73 degrees upper 80s by 1:00. and we don't stop there by the later afternoon looking at 94 degrees. and then by 9:00 partying continues. and it's about 80 degrees tomorrow in santa clara as we get a little bit of cooler weather closer to the coast. no deal there for santa clara. it is going to be hot with temperatures in the mid 90s by 1:00, and then by the fourth quarter upper 90s, it will feel even hotter than that with all those people in the stands of course. so santa cruz today, nice afternoon. we're talking low 90s right at the beach there and then elsewhere into the 80s today. so that's why we have the excessive heat warning today. for those of you

in san francisco, it will expire tonight. and will continue to see those warnings and watches expire into sunday night. so that's the good news. highs today 103 in concord. so we were 101 yesterday at the livermore airport. so notice we're coming up a few degrees 103 in livermore today, 102 in santa rosa. not today. this 100 degree temperature in san jose will break a record of five of more consecutive calendar days of 100 degrees up in santa rosa. it's been 1200 degree days for the calendar year, and san rafael has seen ten 100 degree days. so, you know, it's been excessively hot all summer. 95 in oakland today, san francisco, 90 degrees. so it was 82 yesterday. you get the idea of how much hotter it will be today. that ocean temperature 59 degrees. i can verify that. i was at stinson last week. lucky me. the accuweather seven day forecast. so the heat and fire danger continues today. still hot, sunny tomorrow, but we get

navy destroyer known as the ghost ship of the pacific explorer and historian james delgado spun us the seagoing tale of the uss stewart, captured by the japanese during world war two and turned against u.s. forces. >> what had happened is that the japanese decided to repair stewart when us pilots started reporting it. pretty soon, he said, folks said, that's got to be the old stewart. and so in the ranks of the navy, stewart became known as the ghost ship of the pacific. back from the dead. >> he says the navy recovered the uss stewart after the war, towed her to san francisco, and ultimately sank her miles off the golden gate. an area that's now the cordell bank national marine sanctuary. >> and after a couple of hours, stewart rolled over onto one side and sank, never to be seen again until we dropped a remotely operated vehicle on it on august 4th of this year. >> first, it helps to understand

that the sinking wasn't an isolated case. delgado assisted with underwater surveys of the uss independence, a carrier also sunk off the bay area coast and was familiar with the waters. then this summer, he was notified by a company called ocean infinity that they were testing autonomous underwater vehicles in that area. >> and we're working them together. do you have anything you'd like to find? why? funny you should ask. >> using records from navy archives and a special permit from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, the team scanned the ocean floor in early august. finally, with the help of sonar, they homed in on the wreckage. they say the images show a vessel in remarkably good condition. delgado was watching from a remote hookup. >> they dropped the rov and they drove it where we asked them to take it. and for 2.5 hours, we explored stewart, comparing exciting notes back and forth with each other, saying, did you see that? what about this? >> the stewart is still the

property of the u.s. navy, and the mission was not a salvage operation. what the team did take away, though, was the satisfaction of solving an enduring mystery and uncovering the resting place of the ghost ship of the pacific in san francisco. dan ashley, abc seven news. >> a well-loved east bay nurser, annie's annuals and perennials has suddenly closed. they closed their doors in richmond on thursday and announced it the same day. in a heartfelt letter to the community, the owner says she is facing significant health issues, making it impossible to continue operations. talks with potential buyers make her hopeful. the brand legacy and its offerings can live on. up north, salmon have been spotted in the klamath river for the first time in decades, according to the chronicle. scientists with the nonprofit california trout spotted chinook salmon using a sonar camera. the salmon were migrating upstream, past where the iron gate dam used to

be, and this would mark the first time in more than 100 years that salmon have migrated up the river. back in august, the removal of four dams along the river was completed, and california trout says this will help restore the river and the declining salmon population. well, still to come this morning, bay area communities are receiving millions of dollars from the state to help with homelessness. but these extra funds can come with a catch. we'll explain. and hitting the campaign trail with a month until election day, former president trump is heading back to butler, pennsylvania, the place where he was shot back in

tomorrow we are going to see some changes as soon as tomorrow. so a red flag warning for the next couple of hours in the highlighted area here. the hills over into the east bay. you can see there danville, upper elevations around livermore. the santa cruz mountains and the eastern hills of san jose. and we have an increased risk, of course, of fire danger, extreme heat. and you can see all the colors here indicating our warnings and watches. all throughout the bay area. now, what expires today will be the warnings tonight at 11 p.m. so that's where the temperatures will be in the 90s to low 100 seconds. so the hotter day will be today. we get a little bit of relief tomorrow. air quality certainly is not as good as it could be. we are mild in the mid 60s, cooler in the north bay. so that brings us anywhere from 4 to 11 degrees warmer this morning. and as we look outside our forecast throughout the day today in the upper 90s noontime inland 90 around the bay shore, near 80 at the coast, of course, a spare the air day. we'll plot it all

a really great chance to just breathe. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> back here in california, the state is spending more than $130 million to help combat the state's homeless crisis. governor gavin newsom announced the funding yesterday. 18 cities and counties across the state will receive these funds, including several here in the bay area. newsom emphasized that the state wants to see tangible results, support the people that are out there and the underlying causes, but we need to take back the streets. >> and these encampment resolution grants are part of that. >> this has been done in the past, and we've seen that those funds don't exactly make it into the programs and organizations that would help. >> contra costa county plans to use $5.7 million to clear an encampment near the city of san pablo. the county will move people off the street into permanent housing. still ahead this morning, we are counting down until espn's college game

their old sorority sisters and their signs. i know it's a whole thing, but jim, what does it mean for cal to have this right, to have this national spotlight both for cal sports and also the cal community? >> well, i think it's amazing. it's our first home acc football game. so our fans, our football team, our alums, everybody is absolutely excited. and i think for us it's a great opportunity to tell our story, not only about our football team, but our athletic department, our olympians. and then it's really bringing together the campus, the faculty, the staff, and we'll tell a lot of stories. just about what what is the essence of cal. and, you know, we've had some stories with espn about the only people on campus that get parking are the nobel laureates. and, you know, obviously, the play back in 1982 and there's so many great stories and now we have marshawn lynch as the guest picker. so, so we have seen this energy that has just permeated the entire

campus, which is exciting. yeah. >> you all are bringing out some big guns with folks like marshawn lynch showing up to be the guest picker during college game day. lots of excitement. you mentioned that this is the home opener for acc play for cal. since you all joined the atlantic coast conference. i know a lot of us were kind of scratching our head like cal atlantic coast. that doesn't make sense. there were some reservations, but there was also a lot of excitement about the opportunity and what it could mean. how has it been playing out so far from your perspective? >> it's been fabulous. it's really continued to help us expand on the national and international stage. uh- like schools like cal, where you know, the acc schools very much value academics and athletics. and i think our student athletes are really enjoying the competition and, and certainly the athletic directors like dan, who have been just fabulous in welcoming us. it's really been a smooth transition and exciting for our entire university.

>> i know i'm kind of getting used to it. at first. it was a weird thought, right? it's like we faced ucla, usc, washington, and it's so weird to have different opponents, but it is definitely exciting as well and pulls in a national audience. okay, jim, we heard you guys pulled out all the stops for this game. like during the show before the show, after the show, lots of crowd pleasers. >> yeah, we have a lot going on. i was just talking to our swim team that's going to be there in force with their speedos and goggles on, and our entire rugby team is going, and, you know, the chancellor and i, at 4:00, will be handing out donuts. and then at 6:00 we'll be handing out, you know, breakfast burritos, talking to the crowd, getting everyone fired up. and i just think this is a great example of how the university can come together. and certainly it's great to have our football program at the center of it. >> well, we know you have a lot of preparing to do for the big game in college game day on cal's campus tomorrow. we're not
