in cal's history. a look at how they're getting ready for the national stage. and a wildfire. did extensive damage to at least one house tonight in lake county. the fire took off in the heat, and the winds will have more on the damage. and that heat is expected to last through the weekend. what to expect as the temperatures stay high and when they might start to come down. good morning everybody. it's saturday, october fifth. lisa is here with more on that heat and the many days that we've been dealing with it this week. and finally we get a break. >> well, you know, it's somewhat classic bay area october weather, but it has been extreme hasn't it, where temperatures have been 20 to 25 degrees above average today. we're coming up 2 to 4 degrees. our excessive heat warnings and advisories continue until 11:00 tonight for the peninsula san francisco. here's our red flag warning. the highlighted areas of the east bay hills, the upper elevations of the santa cruz mountains through 9:00 this morning. and these advisories, the hottest

locations. this will expire 11:00 tonight. so today will be hotter than tomorrow for you in san francisco along the shoreline. it will be a great beach day today. but we are looking at this. these heat alerts to continue to our inland valleys tomorrow. right now it is in the upper seconds in danville, so that's a breath of fresh air. 62 san mateo. 24 hours ago we were cooler. we're milder at the coast, warmer up in santa rosa. so those winds allowing for a quick warm up today, the light offshore winds. here we are. noontime 93, san ramon 87, san mateo. by the afternoon we are 103. in concord, 100 or better in san jose. and 7:00 tonight. still very hot out there into the 90s and a spare the air alert today and tomorrow. stephanie. >> all right. lisa, thank you. speaking of the heat, fire danger continues up north where a wildfire is burning. it started just before noon yesterday and has burned more than 400 acres with multiple

spot fires. cal fire crews and several aircraft responded to try to get the upper hand last night, but containment is only at 10% this morning. the fire is in the glen haven area of lake county and we know that evacuation orders are in effect as well as evacuation warnings, and we have that information posted over on our website. cal fire crews are worried about homes near highway 20. >> so we're right on that border of the red flag warning that was established today for southern lake county. so that's a combination that could lead to erratic fire behavior and rapid fire growth. and we've seen that a little bit. >> at least two buildings have already been confirmed as destroyed. about 2500 homes are currently at risk. and it's sizzling everywhere in the bay area. but the heat did not seem to stop. people in the south bay events went on as planned, from outdoor movie nights to high school football games. here's abc seven news reporter lauren martinez.

>> the high school football games at santa teresa high school in san jose played on in the heat new this season at schools across the state is this tool called a wet bulb globe temperature? >> it's a good piece of mind. and then that we have a number to go off of. >> it measures direct sunlight, temperature, wind speed and other factors to determine heat stress for outdoor activities on wednesday, water polo and football had to change their playing times. >> football pushed their practice back almost two hours a couple of days this week so that they could practice in safe conditions. >> if people weren't in the stands, they were at the snack bar. >> we're selling a lot of bottled water today. snow cones are super popular. >> not far from the school. families came out for a spooktacular movie night. >> we love hocus pocus, so any chance to come see it especially for free outside? >> we're there! jennifer lindberg and her daughter love this time of the year when it's cooler. >> if i didn't see the calendar

i'm going to pull you in. how much? over here, man. oh, you let go! all right. that right there. he's right there. yeah, he's right there. where's he at? right here. right here. >> it happened early last sunday morning. a person was in distress in the water. as you can see. and when pulling that person with a rope did not work, an officer swam out into the water and pulled them back to shore, saving their life. the individual is recovering now at a hospital. happening right now the san francisco. highway 101 connector is closed for the weekend. this ramp for drivers traveling north into the city closed at 10:00 last night. urgent repairs are needed to a damaged concrete barrier and a railing. it's the first of a series of scheduled repairs that need lane closures on central freeways. the connecting area of road is located right by san bruno avenue and rickard street. that's right next to the portola neighborhood. you can expect delays and take a detour at the

seventh street offramp, and it will reopen by 5 a.m. on monday. in the east bay, part of southbound i-680 will be closed all weekend. caltrans is going to repave the road several lanes from acosta boulevard and san ramon to i-580 in pleasanton are shut down until 4 a.m. on monday. caltrans closed this section for work two weeks ago, and they'll be closing it again in another two weeks. one of the big events happening around the bay area this weekend is college game day. espn's popular pregame show is in berkeley for the very first time in, the excitement is building. students and fans are counting down until the show and the historic game. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is on the cal campus, where the set is up and running. >> you can see the thousands of students that showed up early. let's walk out here and you can see this is what the crowd looks like. we have been talking with many of them. they are out here. they are lively and they are all

coming up at 611 in the south bay, a san jose city council member says he's innocent despite being the target of a police investigation. according to our media partners at the bay area news group, the investigation involves sexually explicit material and allegations of a relationship with a minor. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has more. >> members of neighborhood associations in downtown san jose say they are shocked to learn about serious allegations within city hall. council member omar torres was pulled over on his way to a vta meeting. he was scheduled to attend thursday, and he was detained and

questioned by san jose police. torres's lawyer says police asked him to hand over electronic devices and passwords, but gave no information about the reason for the investigation. however, our media partners at the bay area news group report that this is a criminal investigation into alleged sexually explicit material in a relationship with a minor. allegations. torres said in a statement, are unfounded. torres said, quote, i want to be absolutely clear, these accusations are entirely false. i fully cooperated with the san jose police department, including providing my passwords without hesitation, as i have nothing to hide. it is disheartening that my family partner, team and i have to confront such defamatory and baseless claims. torres did not appear at a press conference friday announcing federal funding for a new park in the downtown district that he represents. his chief of staff left without comment, and mayor matt mehan was asked if he had any advance notice of the allegations. >> no, and i can't comment on it any further because it's an ongoing investigation and we have to let our detectives do

their jobs. i know that our police department is working very hard to get to the truth. >> truth that. legal analyst stephen clark says may take time to find in a complex investigation. torres's statement said he's the victim here, as the accusations come from misinformation provided to law enforcement in retaliation for a police report he filed against an individual for extortion and stalking, clark says what's found on torres's devices will indicate who is right and who is wrong. was there child sexual abuse material? >> were there inappropriate pictures exchanged or inappropriate conversations? what was said between the parties? what was the intent of those comments? that will be very key here. >> torres says his office remains fully operational as the investigation continues in san jose. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> a scam has been discovered at one of san francisco's most popular tourist destinations. sfmta is warning people to watch out for a fake qr code when

parking. the qr code says phone pay, as the mta says they found at least five machines with the fraudulent qr sticker. people can visit their website to learn how to correctly pay for parking. the agency does not know if any visitors were affected by this scam. waymo's will look a little different in the coming years. waymo and hyundai announced a partnership that will introduce hyundai's new electric vehicles to waymo's fleet of self-driving cars. road testing waymo's technology in the ioniq fives will begin in 2025. the companies expect the cars to become available to waymo one robo robo taxi riders in the years after that. now, waymo has previously partnered with chrysler and jaguar. california's plan to connect more underserved communities with high speed internet can now be put into motion. the biden-harris administration announced it has approved california's internet for all initiative. that means the state can begin implementing the

program using funds from the federal government's broadband equity access and deployment, or beed program. california was allocated $1.8 billion in funding to improve internet infrastructure. >> california stands ready to put these funds to work, bolstering our economy, building durable broadband infrastructure and generating quality jobs. >> right now, 1 in 5 californians does not have broadband internet. dozens of volunteers hit the streets in the tenderloin for a graffiti cleanup blitz. mayor london breed joined the 70 or so volunteers to help paint over utility poles throughout the tenderloin yesterday. the tenderloin community development district organized this effort as part of its mission to organize services to maintain safe and clean streets. they partnered with the department of public works to clean up graffiti throughout the tenderloin. in san francisco, big crowds are turning out for hardly strictly bluegrass this weekend. the free three day

in san francisco that also expiring tonight while the rest of us continue to sweat it out into sunday. and then each and every day we will shave off a few degrees. more dramatic cooling into monday. right now, it is 61, in fremont, 67 in hayward. so, you know, with temperatures like this already in the upper 60s to the upper seconds in the hills, it's going to be a hot one out there. and despite the 50s here, we will climb to near 100 today. we've got the light winds still under a massive dome of high pressure. the light somewhat offshore winds allowing for critically high fire danger and potential records. today we're looking at records likely all around the bay area. and then for tomorrow, a bit of a cool down. but that high fire danger, those breezy winds in the hills almost as dry as it gets around here. thank goodness we're going to see an end to this. so we're beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel here. and then cooler weather arrives for some of you

on monday and for everyone on tuesday. today in san francisco, it is going to be warm to hot with 88 degrees. so you'll notice a few degrees cooler on sunday, but you're really going to have to be right at the coast to feel that cool down tomorrow. but at least we're going in the right direction and temperatures inland will be a couple degrees above average along the bay shore, we're talking as much as five to even eight degrees warmer today. as you look at berkeley low 70s, 9:00, and we had mid 80s yesterday. but by 1:00 we're in the upper 80s. and then 94 by 5:00. so that gets you really in the mood once again. unfortunately for that excessive heat where we're going to be hotter today than we were yesterday, 9:00, 80 degrees. so a scorcher out there and really no changes for levi's stadium. santa clara for your sunday. even though some of you will experience a slight cooldown, we will be near 100 degrees down in the south bay. the fifth day of 100 degree temperatures for the

a famous navy vessel sunk there after world war two. here's abc seven news anchor dan ashley. >> the bay area's fog shrouded coast seems tailor made for hiding ghosts from the past, but now a research team has pulled back the curtain on a mystery that's endured for nearly 80 years. the location of a u.s. navy destroyer known as the ghost ship of the pacific. explorer and historian james delgado spun us the seagoing tale of the uss stewart, captured by the japanese during world war two and turned against u.s. forces. >> what had happened is that the japanese decided to repair

stewart. when u.s. pilots started reporting it pretty soon, said folks said, that's got to be the old stewart. and so in the ranks of the navy, stewart became known as the ghost ship of the pacific. back from the dead. >> he says the navy recovered the uss stewart after the war, towed her to san francisco, and ultimately sank her miles off the golden gate. an area that's now the cordell bank national marine sanctuary. >> and after a couple of hours, stewart rolled over onto one side and sank, never to be seen again until we dropped a remotely operated vehicle on it on august 4th of this year. >> first, it helps to understand that the sinking wasn't an isolated case. delgado assisted with underwater surveys of the uss independence. a carrier also sunk off the bay area coast and was familiar with the waters. then this summer, he was notified by a company called ocean infinity that they were testing autonomous underwater vehicles in that area, and we're

working them together. >> do you have anything you'd like to find? why? funny you should ask. >> using records from navy archives and a special permit from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, the team scanned the ocean floor in early august. finally, with the help of sonar, they homed in on the wreckage. they say the images show a vessel in remarkably good condition. delgado was watching from a remote hookup. >> they dropped the rov and they drove it where? we asked them to take it. and for 2.5 hours, we explored stewart, comparing exciting notes back and forth with each other, saying, did you see that? what about this? >> the stewart is still the property of the u.s. navy, and the mission was not a salvage operation. what the team did take away, though, was the satisfaction of solving an enduring mystery and uncovering the resting place of the ghost ship of the pacific in san francisco. dan ashley, abc seven news. >> in the east bay, a well-loved

east bay nursery, annie's annuals and perennials has suddenly closed. they closed their doors in richmond on thursday and announced at the same day. in a heartfelt letter to the community, the owner says she's facing significant health issues, making it impossible to continue operations talks with potential buyers make her hopeful. the brand legacy and its offerings can live on. up north, salmon have been spotted in the klamath river for the first time in decades. according to the chronicle, scientists with the nonprofit california trout spotted chinook salmon using a sonar camera. the salmon were migrating upstream, past where the iron gate dam used to be. now, this would mark the first time in more than 100 years that salmon have migrated up the river. back in august, the removal of four dams along the river was completed. california trout says this will help restore the river and the declining salmon population. still to come this morning, bay area communities are receiving

election. he wrote a letter to congress urging lawmakers to replenish some disaster relief programs before they empty out. the small business administration's disaster loan program is currently at risk of exhausting all its funds. congress is currently in recess until november 12th. some lawmakers have called on congress to return if necessary, but there's been no plans to cut recess short. there have been at least 220 people confirmed dead by hurricane helene. the deadly tropical storm swept through the southeast last week, and officials say it's going to be a long road to recovery as survivors work on rebuilding their lives and their homes. these photos show the destruction in north carolina from the excessive rain and severe flooding, which you just saw, which washed away homes and communities. more than 200 people were unaccounted for in buncombe county as of thursday. relief agencies are grappling with the damage now. they've also debunked claims that run money is running out for

stadium tonight. that game kicks off on our sister network, espn at 730. meanwhile, the niners are gearing up for a tough three game stretch, and it all starts with the cardinals tomorrow in santa clara. here's abc seven sports director larry beil. >> good morning everybody. the 40 niners dealing with a rash of injuries. the schedule is definitely not kind here. the niners play the cardinals then seattle. so if you squeeze in the previous patriots game, that's going to be three games in 12 days. fred warner had the pick six last week. and george kittle are questionable limited in practice. but we'll probably give it a go. and fred looked pretty good running around yesterday after arizona on sunday. just three days of rest and you have to include a travel day to get to seattle for thursday night football. george kittle with advice for some of his younger niner mates. >> when we played on sunday, you're playing three games in 12 days and that's a lot of football. so like what coach shanahan has always preached since i've been in the league, and it took me a while to understand that it was like

sports. have a great weekend everybody. i'm larry beil. >> thanks, larry. and if you're heading out to berkeley tonight to watch cal face miami, it's going to be a hot one lisa. >> oh, as much as ten degrees warmer than friday. stephanie. so temperatures coming up today, excessive heat advisories and warnings. right. even in san francisco. so over in berkeley, 73 degrees in the next couple of hours. then warming quickly to the upper 80s mid 90s. by 5:00 the sun sets before 7:00, but then by 9:00 dropping off slowly 80 degrees. so today, tomorrow the heat is going to continue. in fact, we're anywhere from 2 to 10 degrees warmer the next 48 hours. no fog out there. we do have haze. you can see it clearly here right now. it is 65 downtown, 64 in oakland, 67 hayward, san jose and upper 50s redwood city. we have cooled down at the coast, but that's still five degrees warmer than yesterday. at this hour at mount

tam. kind of a glassy looking bay there as the winds are absent or light. 57 santa rosa. it's 54 petaluma with 59 by the delta no breeze there. 64 in concord. livermore is at 62. so air quality is moderate. spare the air alert today. look at the east bay or inland valleys in the south bay, where temperatures once again will be in the mid 90s to over 100. i should say increasing, because yesterday we did get a bit of relief. not the case today. so weekend records are likely high fire danger gets as hot as it will probably today. could see a degree or two hotter on sunday and then we have that red flag warning through 9:00. for the upper elevations of the east bay. the hills around santa clara. relative humidity 10% right now, mount tam, next week. it's cooler. and for today in san francisco, upper 80s. it's a hot day for hardly strictly. but then by tomorrow, not only do we have a couple degrees of

cooling, but we are still under the influence of an offshore flow, so we're not talking about any cooling really until monday. so we are switching that up, bringing on the heat for the weekend and then into sunday mid 90s. 1:00 the cardinals in town, the niners 98 degrees. levi's stadium perhaps 100. and that 98th may be conservative. so today would make the fifth 100 degree day in san jose for the calendar year. that's a record 98 santa clara 95. in sunnyvale, temperatures 7 to 8 degrees warmer from san mateo to palo alto to redwood city. today at the coast, upper 80s to near 90 in the sunset. look at the coast. we are 88 stinson, bodega bay, mid 80s 101 novato. hotter today. we talked about that along the bay shore. 94 in richmond and fremont. you're back into the mid 90s with 103 in concord. so temperatures here 2 to 4 degrees warmer than yesterday. and your relief

the creators and cast of la maquina. reunited for a red carpet premiere in hollywood. the stars could not hold back their excitement as la maquina marks hulu's first original series completely in spanish. we chatted with luna about his physical transformation, playing a boxing manager, helping garcia bernal's character with his final fight. >> it was painful to get the character on, but it was it was it was so nice, like to use these tools. the first time in my life that i get to like, work with prosthetics and such a characterization, you know, and it was, it was really cool. i felt really free. >> la maquina premieres next week on wednesday on hulu. sundown cinema is continuing its season of movies in parks. last night, they screened the princess and the frog at the india basin shoreline park, right near bayview in san francisco. these free outdoor movies attract tons of people

from all over the neighborhood. so nice this time of year. sundown's last movie of the summer, the nightmare before christmas, will play at mclaren park on october 18th. all right, he's moving on up. this little guy is brier, a rescued mountain lion cub at the oakland zoo. we've been following him and his journey for a while now. and as a part of his socializing, brier is being relocated to the zoo's head start space, where he'll get to share a fence line with the zoo's residents. mountain lions getting used to all the new sights, sounds and smells, and he'll also get more space to climb and act like a mountain lion. so cute. good look at him all day, lisa. >> yeah, he needs to be as act like a mountain lion. it'll be ten degrees warmer today over in the east bay, so prepare for that. yesterday we were 67, half moon bay. today that 82 could be conservative. it is going to be warmer today. excessive heat, watches and warnings. the accuweather seven day forecast almost as hot tomorrow. we do
