in one of the bay area's most heated races. this one is a first for us. and you too. tonight on abc seven news at 11. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> and we begin tonight with the end of the brutal heat wave blistering the bay area. good evening. i'm ama daetz finally. >> yeah, i'm dan ashley. we appreciate you joining us tonight. final heat advisory is expiring right now. >> yeah. so let's get straight to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. finally with cooler weather on the way, sandhya, i know it's about time, right? dan and ama, this heat wave has dragged on for days. it has been eight days and today we set records once again. that swelter bringing 102 to santa rosa, breaking the old record 108. in san rafael. you will notice it was hot in oakland. 95, san jose, 102 degrees, breaking the previous record of 94. we take a look at some of the other high temperatures, and it did get up into the triple digits around concord livermore,

92, in san francisco and 103 in cloverdale. let's check out the 24 hour temperature change. this is encouraging. down 16 degrees in san francisco, you're 14 degrees cooler in half moon bay, 9 degrees drop in oakland, and we're going to continue with that drop in temperatures. the winds have been picking up onshore in the hills 30 miles an hour. even at the lower elevations. so our big story, of course, is this heat wave finally coming to an end. dan. and nice to see. yeah, we're getting a break, but not so much for florida. hurricane milton headed right toward them. >> and sandy, this storm has everyone really worried. with good reason. this thing is exploding in size and strength. >> it has in just a matter of hours. dan. and it became a category five. right now it is a category four hurricane. so let's talk about milton. it is churning in the gulf of mexico, just north of the yucatan peninsula, packing winds of 155 miles an hour, gusts to 200. now, at this point, it is

expected to remain a very dangerous, potentially catastrophic hurricane, gaining strength a bit back to five and then a category four wednesday morning by wednesday night, landfall is expected across the western portion of florida near tampa, possibly now. here is the deal. the storm surge is expected to be up to 15ft. that is going to lead to devastating flooding. the rainfall is going to add up. we are talking about isolated 15in, 5 to 10in of rain for most areas. there are already watches and warnings up for the southeast. this is going to be a hurricane that is going to cause much devastation following the last hurricane. that came through florida just a few weeks ago. >> dan yeah, this is a really scary storm, obviously. sandhya, thanks very much. florida is already announcing airport and school shutdowns ahead of this storm. florida's governor says some gas stations are running out of fuel in the rush to evacuate, though there is no statewide shortage. president biden has spoken with governor desantis and tampa's mayor with

remarks planned for tomorrow. california is sending nearly 150 firefighters and other first responders into the storm zone to help hundreds of p-g-and-e's workers deployed in georgia are also making their way to florid. abc news reporter melissa adan on the preparations and the desperate pleas from leaders in the path of a monster. >> the state of florida preparing for yet another powerful hurricane. >> this is the storm of the century, and we need to be preparing for this storm. >> officials in tampa are warning residents to not let their guard down and to take evacuation orders seriously, as life threatening storm surge of 10 to 15ft is expected. >> if they have called for evacuation order. i beg you, i implore you to evacuate. drowning deaths due to storm surge are 100% preventable. if you leave tampa's airport closing operation on tuesday, schools in at least 20 counties will close, starting on tuesday,

with many more shutting down on wednesday in central florida, people preparing, filling up sandbags at least ten counties are under evacuation orders. >> milton headed to florida just ten days after helene slammed florida's big bend as a strong category four hurricane. a debris and waste from helene still lined streets in saint petersburg, florida. helene, responsible for more than 230 deaths across the southeast, where massive recovery efforts and federal assistance is underway. melissa o'donnell, abc news, los angeles in tonight's abc seven news at 11, one of tomorrow's major headlines will be watching closely the superintendent of san francisco unified is set to give an update on school closures amid the district's budget crisis. >> he'll be sharing a list of schools that meet the criteria to close, though the list isn't final. >> so tomorrow you can expect a communication from me in which i share in more detail what we're

facing in terms of our budget crisis and the need to consolidate our resources. >> the superintendent also announced a virtual town hall for this thursday so the community can weigh in. he'll give his final recommendation on which schools to close in november, and then the school board will vote in december. a judge has dismissed charges against two of three alameda police officers in the 2021 killing of mario gonzalez in his decision, the judge wrote alameda county prosecutors did not file charges against two officers within the statute of limitations, but the judge is allowing the case against the remaining defendant, officer eric mckinley, to move forward. mckinley was out of the country, some in recent years, making his statute of limitations different. 26 year old gonzalez died while being taken into police custody in 2021. >> let's turn your attention now to a somber day for israel and for so many across the bay area. one year ago today, a deadly terror attack at a music festival in israel triggered the war with hamas. 1200 people were

killed, with hundreds more taken hostage and tens of thousands of palestinians have died in the conflict. ever since. here in the bay area, a deep sense of % october 7th, 2023, abc seven news reporter tim johns takes you to a memorial service in san francisco, where the community found hope amid their grief. >> the line extended out the door monday night at san francisco's congregation emanu-el. there, hundreds of people came out for a special service to remember the roughly 1200 killed or taken hostage last october 7th during hamas's terrorist attack on israel. >> to kind of zoom our lens back in and to think about what happened last year, tonight, it's just incredibly sad night for many. >> the service was very emotional. tyler gregory, the ceo of the jewish community relations council, says several people in attendance personally knew someone who died that day. gregory believes that fact, coupled with the rise in anti-semitism since the war erupted, has left the local jewish community profoundly

impacted. >> what's not okay is for this war to come home and for communities to be scapegoated for what's happening overseas. >> monday's service was open to people of all faiths. an important element of the memorial says the congregation's chief rabbi, ryan bauer. >> it can feel quite lonely. and then you come here and you realize, actually, you're not alone. you know, there are there are allies here. and so when you have people, you know, friends call that aren't jewish and say, listen, i am thinking about you today. and i see you. it means a lot. >> also in attendance were several of san francisco's political leaders, including mayor london breed, district attorney brooke jenkins, and multiple supervisors state senator scott wiener, taking time to thank them for their presence, wiener saying it sends an important message to one of the city's oldest communities during a challenging time. >> the jewish community has always had a home here in san francisco from the very beginning, from the 1850s, despite the feelings of sadness present monday night, there were also feelings of hope. >> a hope that one day healing would come and a hope that one day peace would come.

>> i have to have hope that we can get to that, because that hope inspires you to go on and to try to make the world a better place. >> in san francisco, tim jonze, abc seven news kumasi palestine will be free in the south bay today. >> a student run organization at san jose state university demonstrated their grief for all the palestinians who have died in the war. their rally today echoed the messages of many other bay area groups, all calling for an immediate ceasefire. the students for justice in palestine say they feel an obligation to fight back against the killings in the south bay. >> a fire has forced seven adults and five kids from their san jose homes tonight. the fire on mesa drive broke out just before 5 p.m. three units in a four unit building were impacted. the cause is under investigation. one person was treated on the scene for burns to her arm. agencies are helping the residents and some pets find

it comes in handy when it's this hot at the ucsf parnassus campus. the lack of ac is more than an inconvenience. it's a health concern. >> it really is. abc seven news reporter j.r stone talked with employees who say several hospital floors are hitting scorching temperatures. >> right now it is it is so miserably hot on our floor. it is 95 to 100 degrees. and we are taking care of extremely ill patients. >> that's melton smith, who's a registered nurse at ucsf medical center at parnassus in san francisco, where he and more than a half dozen other nurses tell us on certain floors, there is no air conditioning. >> my anger level is like up to here. i've been dealing with this for years and i don't know what else to do. i'm sick of it

and we're all sick of it. >> smith says cold towels were given out, but those gave him this rash. >> not only is it difficult for us, but especially for patients that are trying to get better. >> several of the nurses we spoke with wished to remain anonymous. >> from a like a top hospital in the us, it seems really ridiculous. like, i can't even put on my gloves to do the work that i need to do to take care of my patients, because my palms are sweating from the heat. >> i know, me too. >> those at ucsf were aware of our request for comment, but did not get back to us in time for this broadcast. ucsf ceo did return melton's email complaining about the condition, saying in part, quote, i'm really sorry about the situation going on to say we've made substantial investments in cooling over the last decade and will continue to do so, end quote. employees we spoke with are hopeful for either cooler work areas or a plan to take those in hot rooms elsewhere, which they say has been done in

the past. >> it's very unfortunate that when we go to the ceo of and say, hey, this is what's going on. we're just met with a, oh, we're doing the best we can. because the reality is these rooms should not be open. >> they have totally ignored us. it makes us feel like they don't care. >> we did reach out to cal osha to get their take on the situation, but also did not hear back from them in time for this broadcast. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> new developments tonight. with the clock ticking on the catholic diocese of oakland's bankruptcy. the diocese is up against a november eighth deadline to work out its reorganization. it entered chapter 11 proceedings last year, overwhelmed by lawsuits over sexual abuse. it says it's in mediation with those survivors to reach settlements. it's also suing more than a dozen different insurers, trying

to get them to cover claims and contribute to the settlements. all this will need final approval by a bankruptcy judge. >> well, big piece of vegas history is about to come down. the tropicana las vegas is being demolished early wednesday morning to make way for the a's ballpark. officials say there won't be a public viewing area because of potential danger, but that's not stopping visitors who are booking nearby hotel rooms to catch a glimpse of this implosion. >> i have a work event and it falls right over the date. >> so the implosion and then that's great for me. so i can be here around two, 230 in the morning to watch the implosion and the show that they're going to have for it. you always remember. yep. always remember it. >> how are you guys going to try to watch it close as we can get? >> the ballpark is set to open in 2028, but there have been a number of challenges with this deal. all right. you know, there is something always fascinating about an implosion. >> i was going to say nothing like a good old implosion to get people excited.

>> i don't know why. it's just something fun to watch. all right, let's get back and we'll talk a little bit about our weather. the heat is easing. of course. we're following the hurricane heading toward florida. yes. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel has it all for us. sandhya. yeah. ama and dan. as we went on the air, things changed. >> the national weather service just issued a heat advisory until 7 p.m. tomorrow. it's for a limited area. the east bay valleys, east bay hills and eastern santa clara hills in effect until 7 p.m. tomorrow. the concern here is we've had days of heat. even if the temperatures are lower, mid to upper 90s, there's still a risk of heat related illnesses. so definitely take it easy out there. let's talk about the heat wave. san jose has had record heat temperature of 95 or higher for eight days. this breaks the previous record of seven days from 1976. so if you thought it has been really unusually hot, you're not imagining things. and that's just one city. we've seen that happen and repeated with other cities as well. here's a

live view from our mount tam cam, the onshore breezes picking up a beautiful view of the city by the bay. and hey, it is fleet week. so let's talk about the forecast friday fog will give way to sunshine. it is going to be a mild day. 72 degrees west wind to 12. unfortunately for fleet week festivities. cloudier on saturday but there is a chance of showers and then sunday. nice with near average conditions. that chance of showers is not a done deal so hopefully things will be okay. now here's the deal. as we look at live doppler seven, there's an area of low pressure that is going to drop down, enhance our marine layer, kick up the winds, and that's going to drive those temperatures down. tomorrow. they are lower. we're out of the triple digits. on live doppler seven we are seeing some high clouds and there is some patchy fog beginning to form near the coastline. temperatures anywhere from the 60s to the 70s. right now, cloverdale is at 81 degrees. exploratorium camera showing you a beautiful view of san francisco overnight tonight. areas of fog near the coast. tomorrow through friday. breezy,

cooler days. and this weekend we do bring in a chance of showers on saturday. we certainly need the showers to basically add more moisture to the fuels and lessen our fire danger, especially around this time of year. hourly wind forecast will show you the winds are going to be light at the lower elevations, and then pick right back up again tomorrow afternoon and evening. that is going to result in some cooling, along with the fog that is going to close in on the coast and push in across the bay by tomorrow evening. so your morning temperatures beginning in the 50s to 70s clear inland, fog at the beaches. give yourself a little more time to get to where you need to go or commuting, because that fog will mean reduced visibility. tomorrow afternoon is a cooler day. breezy coast side, mid 60s. there partly cloudy inland areas. you'll see plenty of sun temperatures in the mid 90s. and then as we look at wednesday, those numbers are going to drop even more into the 80s in our inland east bay valleys. lower 80s for many areas inland. as we head into thursday and friday

with 60s right near the coastline, we're going to fast forward to what's going to happen this week. so one trough comes in thursday continues the cooling trend. here comes that second system on saturday. it looks a little more aggressive. could bring us some showers here in the bay area. in terms of early rainfall estimates. it's looking like anywhere from a few hundreds to maybe a quarter of an inch in ben lomond, the santa cruz mountains. accuweather seven day forecast, morning fog giving way to a cooler afternoon. cooling continues right on through the workweek into the weekend, and that's when we will bring in the chance of showers on saturday, with the temperatures coming right back up again by a few degrees sunday and monday. dan
