heated races. this one is a first for us. and you too. tonight on abc seven news at 11. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> and we begin tonight with the end of the brutal heat wave blistering the bay area. good evening. i'm ama daetz finally. >> yeah, i'm dan ashley. we appreciate you joining us tonight. final heat advisory is expiring right now. >> yeah. so let's get straight to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. finally with cooler weather on the way, sandhya, i know it's about time, right? dan and ama, this heat wave has dragged on for days. it has been eight days and today we set records once again. that swelter bringing 102 to santa rosa, breaking the old record 108. in san rafael. you will notice it was hot in oakland. 95, san jose, 102 degrees, breaking the previous record of 94. we take a look at some of the other high temperatures, and it did get up into the triple digits around concord livermore, 92, in san francisco and 103 in

cloverdale. let's check out the 24 hour temperature change. this is encouraging. down 16 degrees in san francisco, you're 14 degrees cooler in half moon bay, 9 degrees drop in oakland, and we're going to continue with that drop in temperatures. the winds have been picking up onshore in the hills 30 miles an hour. even at the lower elevations. so our big story, of course, is this heat wave finally coming to an end. dan. and nice to see. yeah, we're getting a break, but not so much for florida. hurricane milton headed right toward them. >> and sandy, this storm has everyone really worried. with good reason. this thing is exploding in size and strength. >> it has in just a matter of hours. dan. and it became a category five. right now it is a category four hurricane. so let's talk about milton. it is churning in the gulf of mexico, just north of the yucatan peninsula, packing winds of 155 miles an hour, gusts to 200. now, at this point, it is expected to remain a very dangerous, potentially

catastrophic hurricane, gaining strength a bit back to five and then a category four wednesday morning by wednesday night, landfall is expected across the western portion of florida near tampa, possibly now. here is the deal. the storm surge is expected to be up to 15ft. that is going to lead to devastating flooding. the rainfall is going to add up. we are talking about isolated 15in, 5 to 10in of rain for most areas. there are already watches and warnings up for the southeast. this is going to be a hurricane that is going to cause much devastation following the last hurricane. that came through florida just a few weeks ago. >> dan yeah, this is a really scary storm, obviously. sandhya, thanks very much. florida is already announcing airport and school shutdowns ahead of this storm. florida's governor says some gas stations are running out of fuel in the rush to evacuate, though there is no statewide shortage. president biden has spoken with governor desantis and tampa's mayor with remarks planned for tomorrow.

california is sending nearly 150 firefighters and other first responders into the storm zone to help hundreds of p-g-and-e's workers deployed in georgia are also making their way to florid. abc news reporter melissa adan on the preparations and the desperate pleas from leaders in the path of a monster. >> the state of florida preparing for yet another powerful hurricane. >> this is the storm of the century, and we need to be preparing for this storm. >> officials in tampa are warning residents to not let their guard down and to take evacuation orders seriously, as life threatening storm surge of 10 to 15ft is expected. >> if they have called for evacuation order. i beg you, i implore you to evacuate. drowning deaths due to storm surge are 100% preventable. if you leave tampa's airport closing operation on tuesday, schools in at least 20 counties will close, starting on tuesday,

>> my anger level is like up to here. i've been dealing with this for years and i don't know what else to do. i'm sick of it and we're all sick of it. >> smith says cold towels were given out, but those gave him this rash. >> not only is it difficult for us, but especially for patients that are trying to get better. >> several of the nurses we spoke with wished to remain anonymous. >> from a like a top hospital in the us, it seems really ridiculous. like, i can't even put on my gloves to do the work that i need to do to take care of my patients, because my palms are sweating from the heat. >> i know, me too. >> those at ucsf were aware of our request for comment, but did not get back to us in time for this broadcast. ucsf ceo did return melton's email complaining about the condition, saying in part, quote, i'm really sorry about the situation going on to say we've made substantial investments in cooling over the last decade and will continue to do so, end

quote. employees we spoke with are hopeful for either cooler work areas or a plan to take those in hot rooms elsewhere, which they say has been done in the past. >> it's very unfortunate that when we go to the ceo of and say, hey, this is what's going on. we're just met with a, oh, we're doing the best we can. because the reality is these rooms should not be open. >> they have totally ignored us. it makes us feel like they don't care. >> we did reach out to cal osha to get their take on the situation, but also did not hear back from them in time for this broadcast. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> new developments tonight. with the clock ticking on the catholic diocese of oakland's bankruptcy. the diocese is up against a november eighth deadline to work out its reorganization. it entered chapter 11 proceedings last year, overwhelmed by lawsuits

number of challenges with this deal. all right. you know, there is something always fascinating about an implosion. >> i was going to say nothing like a good old implosion to get people excited. >> i don't know why. it's just something fun to watch. all right, let's get back and we'll talk a little bit about our weather. the heat is easing. of course. we're following the hurricane heading toward florida. yes. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel has it all for us. sandhya. yeah. ama and dan. as we went on the air, things changed. >> the national weather service just issued a heat advisory until 7 p.m. tomorrow. it's for a limited area. the east bay valleys, east bay hills and eastern santa clara hills in effect until 7 p.m. tomorrow. the concern here is we've had days of heat. even if the temperatures are lower, mid to upper 90s, there's still a risk of heat related illnesses. so definitely take it easy out there. let's talk about the heat wave. san jose has had record heat temperature of 95 or higher for eight days. this breaks the previous record of seven days

from 1976. so if you thought it has been really unusually hot, you're not imagining things. and that's just one city. we've seen that happen and repeated with other cities as well. here's a live view from our mount tam cam, the onshore breezes picking up a beautiful view of the city by the bay. and hey, it is fleet week. so let's talk about the forecast friday fog will give way to sunshine. it is going to be a mild day. 72 degrees west wind to 12. unfortunately for fleet week festivities. cloudier on saturday but there is a chance of showers and then sunday. nice with near average conditions. that chance of showers is not a done deal so hopefully things will be okay. now here's the deal. as we look at live doppler seven, there's an area of low pressure that is going to drop down, enhance our marine layer, kick up the winds, and that's going to drive those temperatures down. tomorrow. they are lower. we're out of the triple digits. on live doppler seven we are seeing some high clouds and there is some patchy fog beginning to form near the coastline. temperatures anywhere from the 60s to the 70s. right

now, cloverdale is at 81 degrees. exploratorium camera showing you a beautiful view of san francisco overnight tonight. areas of fog near the coast. tomorrow through friday. breezy, cooler days. and this weekend we do bring in a chance of showers on saturday. we certainly need the showers to basically add more moisture to the fuels and lessen our fire danger, especially around this time of year. hourly wind forecast will show you the winds are going to be light at the lower elevations, and then pick right back up again tomorrow afternoon and evening. that is going to result in some cooling, along with the fog that is going to close in on the coast and push in across the bay by tomorrow evening. so your morning temperatures beginning in the 50s to 70s clear inland, fog at the beaches. give yourself a little more time to get to where you need to go or commuting, because that fog will mean reduced visibility. tomorrow afternoon is a cooler day. breezy coast side, mid 60s. there partly cloudy inland areas. you'll see plenty of sun temperatures in the mid 90s. and then as we look at wednesday,
