lower prices mean significant reductions for the 2526 school year. >> it's the day many san francisco unified families have been waiting for. slash dreading the district set to reveal which schools could close or merge what the district is promising today, and the next steps before a final decision is made. >> hurricane milton has its eyes set on tampa. less than two weeks after hurricane helene devastated parts of the southeast. i'm reena roy in tampa, and i'll have the latest on what we can expect from this
5:02 am
powerful storm coming up. berkeley, california. >> you got it. hey. >> is that the $100,000 field goal seen all across espn? now, that exciting moment at cal is encouraging a major shoe company to help donate to hurricane helene relief. >> i would like to take responsibility for that. i feel like. abc seven mornings is the place that pushed this company to do it. i have no idea if that's true, but let's just go for it. good morning. >> it's tuesday, october 8th, and we are going to begin with a check of the weather with lisa. we know it's cooling down. >> it took its time, didn't it? it really warmed up yesterday. and by late in the afternoon we had that sea breeze or that cooler air trying to make its way in. but we still are left with a heat advisory. inland, the hills above the east bay, there around san jose, santa clara, the east bay hills and the valleys under a heat advisory until 7:00. we'll see. mid 90s there throughout the day, but we are seeing the effects of this trough here, moving to the bay area. and that has allowed for temperatures
5:03 am
this morning to drop off into the 50s and 60s 57, half moon bay 64, in hayward. it is still in the mid 70s in the upper elevations. the hills there in los gatos, 56 santa rosa. and as we look at our 24 hour temperature change, 5 to 10 degrees cooler. so this trend will continue today with numbers dropping off 10 to 15 degrees from monday's reading. so as we look at the morning hours, we have plenty of 60s 70s arrive after 10:00. even some 80s in our inland valleys. and that's where we'll have the numbers top out into the mid 90s here. that's why we have the heat advisory just at about 90 upper 80s to near 90 in parts of the south bay. and you'll notice by the afternoon much more easy to take, right, with the 70s and 80s around the bay. so looking at that marine layer continuing to develop and we're still tracking that weekend forecast, which still wants to bring us a few scattered showers. gloria. >> good morning. so far we are
5:04 am
having no major issues on the roads this morning. we have a live look at our bay bridge camera. you can see traffic is flowing nicely at this time of the morning. no delays here. and looking at our roads here in the bay area, just that usual slowdown that we tend to see there in the altamont pass. we do have some roadway construction that was done overnight. this was over on northbound 680 in sunol. there was a free excuse me, a full highway closure from 84 to bernal avenue that reopened at 5 a.m. so just that should be back open and there should be no issues there. this morning. >> thank you. gloria. pending school closures and the question many parents in san francisco have been asking for months. will my kids school be on that list? families could be getting some answers today. san francisco unified superintendent matt wayne is expected to give an update on which schools meet the criteria for closure. it will be a list of eligible schools, not a final list. the announcement has been a long time in the making. the district promised the list last month, then delayed it, saying it
5:05 am
needed more time to get it right. last night, the superintendent released a video statement saying that you can expect more detail on the district's budget crisis today and the criteria used to determine which schools will close or consolidate. >> the decisions we make in the coming months are going to mean the difference between the state recognizing we've made progress, are feeling like it needs to intervene more, and this budget crisis means significant reductions for the 2526 school year. it is within this context that we are also making decisions about school closures. >> so what comes next? well, after the list is announced today, a virtual town hall will be held thursday at 530 so the community can weigh in. the superintendent will give his final recommendation on which schools to close next month, and then the school board will vote in december. so it's quite a timeline here. yeah. >> new this morning. the biden administration is issuing new rules overnight when it comes to safe drinking water. and, gloria, this order will require
5:06 am
some major work for local cities over the next decade. >> that's right. amanda. the biden administration is setting a ten year deadline for cities to replace old lead pipes with new, safer ones. and it's committing an additional $2.6 billion for drinking water upgrades and lead pipe replacements through the bipartisan infrastructure law. lead is found in many legacy pipe systems across the country and can cause a range of disorders, from behavioral problems to brain damage. it can also lower iq scores in children and stunts development and increases blood pressure in adults. the epa estimates that the stricter standard will prevent up to 900,000 infants from having low birth weight, and avoid up to 1500 premature deaths a year from heart disease. the rule is the strongest overhaul of lead and water standards in roughly three decades. president biden is expected to officially announce the new regulation today in wisconsin. reggie aqui. >> happening today, san francisco supervisors will get an update on the state of the

city's economy, including the hotel industry. now remember, there is a strike going on of union hotel workers. it's in its third week. according to a report published with the board's meeting agenda. hotel occupancy rates and revenue have been mostly flat through the summer and well below pre-pandemic levels. of course, last month's dreamforce conference did bring thousands of people to the city and as you would expect, occupancy rates improved during that week, according to the hotel workers union. hotel workers, industry leaders and the city's economists will speak during today's meeting. >> the former executive director of the san jose police officers association is due back in court today. joanne segovia entered a not guilty plea back in august on modified drug charges. the latest filing changed the drug. she is accused of smuggling from fentanyl to another opioid. segovia's attorney says she might plead guilty today as a result. it's not clear if she'll face a lesser sentence or get a plea deal because of the change.
5:08 am
>> let's talk about what's happening with hurricane milton. it was downgraded overnight to a category four hurricane. of course, it still poses a historic level of threat as it heads toward florida. president biden has spoken with governor desantis and tampa's mayor. he plans to make remarks on the response later today. tampa international airport is suspending all commercial and cargo flights in and out starting this morning. california sending nearly 150 firefighters and other first responders to help hundreds of p-g-and-e's workers deployed in georgia are also now making their way to florida. abc news reporter reena roy is live in tampa a hurricane hasn't directly hit there in decades. rina. >> yeah, that's right. reggie, good morning to you. well, officials are calling milton the storm of the century, and they are really urging people to take this seriously as it closes in this morning, the mass exodus from florida's gulf coast is underway with hurricane milton exploding into a once in a

lifetime storm. >> this is going to be an event like none other. uh- helene was mostly a water event for us. this is going to be wind, water, storm surge, rain, you name it. it's going to bring everything towards our community. >> hurricane hunters flying into the center of milton, monitoring the historically rapid growth of the storm in just hours, becoming the strongest hurricane in the gulf in nearly two decades, fueled by the warmer than usual water. you can see satellite images of the storm as it churns in the ocean. milton is expected to weaken into a category three storm before potentially making landfall sometime wednesday night or early thursday near tampa bay. 15in of rain possible, and the tampa area could see up to 15ft of storm surge. >> we want everybody to be safe, but if you stay in an evacuation zone, i can't promise you that you'll be safe. >> airports in tampa and orlando shutting down schools in at

least 20 counties closed today. many more are following suit on wednesday. millions across the state rushing to prepare once again. less than two weeks after hurricane helene devastated parts of the state. people stocking up on supplies. grocery store shelves running bare. some gas stations running dry. but the governor insists there is enough supply. another urgent concern this morning is the debris from hurricane helene. still piled up in coastal communities. some landfills now open around the clock. >> crews will continue working to clear everything until tropical storm force winds hit. they will need every minute. >> now. fema says it has 20 million meals and 40,000,000l of water ready to be sent out. live in tampa, florida. reena roy for abc seven news tuesday morning. >> back home. we're beginning our cool down as that system pushes into the pacific northwest. and there will be a
5:11 am
several behind it. so we'll be tracking them for a cooler rest of the week. maybe some potential rain for saturday. saturday night 64 in hayward. right now it is 67 in san jose. so still numbers on the warm side, some 50s up to the north bay. not a well-defined marine layer at all. in fact, we're going to have to wait another day until we get that building fog bank. still hot inland today. that's why we have our advisory for our inland valleys with some mid, potentially upper 90s. otherwise, wednesday through friday it's breezy. we have cooler days on tap and then that chance of showers arrives. potentially the timing is not clear whether it's going to be saturday or into saturday evening. here's a look at the winds as they continue to build throughout the afternoon. from 20 to perhaps 30 miles an hour late throughout the day. and then it will continue to bring in that cooler marine air across the bay. so that's definitely what we've been waiting for. and as we look at the next several days, there's another system heading into the pacific northwest. that's the one we're
5:12 am
watching for the weekend. and behind it, we'll still have comfortable weather as no heat is looking to return. 94 in concord today, 95 in livermore. so here are the hot spots. san jose though under 90 degrees. but that could vary. you know, san jose certainly has some warmer locations. 78 in oakland and 73 in san jose. >> thanks, lisa. a new conflict in the race for san francisco's mayor. coming up, three former mayors are accusing one of the candidates of mismanaging campaign funds. and the price of a mega millions ticket is about to go up. >> why? lottery officials say it will be worth it. >> and we're going to hear from the cal student who made better in as little as two weeks. when you can breathe better,

coast, mid 50s up in the north bay. no fog yet, but our 24 hour temperature change anywhere from a couple degrees to eight degrees cooler. we're going in the right direction. and so throughout the afternoon we will warm into the 90s inland. but that's better than the triple digits elsewhere. you're certainly going to notice a big change around the bay. we're from the upper seconds to the low 80s. and even in san jose we'll top out into the 80s. the mid 80s there where at the coast staying in the 60s. and we'll get that patchy fog increasing with those west northwesterly winds. so by tomorrow we'll be near average. then we're going to introduce more cloud cover, more low clouds and fog. and eventually we'll have to time out the precip that is slated to come in for fleet week, whether or not it's going to be saturday morning or saturday night. details on that coming up. >> all right. and we are tracking a sig alert right now. this is in hercules. this is a solo crash on eastbound 80 before highway four. speeds are down to nine miles per hour in

71 in brentwood, but average high in san francisco, 71. you'll see 73 today. and then by tomorrow, everyone will see their temperatures near average. you can see the winds picking up right along the coast here. and then throughout the afternoon we'll see the winds pick up to over 20 and 25 miles an hour. so temperatures just in the 60s at our beaches. and here's a look at what you can expect today. mostly sunny conditions and that will bring another warm day inland. but cooler weather at the coast and around the bay. and then as we get into tuesday night and wednesday, the marine layer builds. we wake up to low clouds and fog wednesday morning, and then by wednesday afternoon we have a few extra clouds. so we'll call it partly cloudy. as another system in the pacific northwest keeps that heat away. and then by the end of the week, maybe offering some rain. there's our 73 today, 78 in oakland. look at san jose, 88 looking at numbers warmer in our inland valleys, but still way down from yesterday. and even in the north bay, where they have seen triple digits for about
