we are very happy to get away from orlando. >> some of the last flights out of florida landing in san francisco tonight. hurricane milton racing toward the state, will leave travelers getting out before that monster storm makes its expected landfall. less than 24 hours from now. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. forecasters say milton has the potential to be one of florida's most destructive hurricanes on record. >> you are looking live out in tampa tonight, where it is still the calm before the storm. >> satellite images capturing milton's massive eye as the storm strengthens back into a category five, abc news reporter

jacqueline lee reports. now from tampa. warning tonight. >> millions warned this is their last chance to evacuate with hurricane milton preparing to slam into florida. >> we've never seen anything like this before. this is the storm of the century. >> 18in of rain and a record storm surge up to 15ft. expected to hit the tampa bay area. >> you want to pick a fight with mother nature? she's winning 100% of the time. and individuals that are in these say you're in a single story home. 12ft is above that so if you're in it, you know, basically that's the coffin that you're in. >> many streets still lined with debris from hurricane helene just days ago. abc's whit johnson in tampa. >> all of this left over from hurricane helene, which came with a record storm surge of up to eight feet in some places. but if you take a look above

from our drone camera, you can just imagine what could happen to these homes. with a surge nearly twice as high. >> tampa's airport already deserted. orlando's pact set to close tomorrow tampa general hospital remaining operational, hoping the portable aqua fence used to keep the surge away during. helene will work with milton. more than 5.5 million people are under evacuation orders across the state. highways jammed with vehicles trying to get out of the path. more than 1300 gas stations across the state running out of fuel tanker trucks, getting police escorts. milton could still wobble a bit before landfall, but the eye is expected somewhere in the tampa bay area, which hasn't seen a direct hit from a hurricane in more than 100 years. jacqueline lee abc news, tampa. >> and this thing is really bad. let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel with a look at the dangerous forecast for this storm as you track it. sandhya. >> yeah, dan, this is one for

the record books. this is a category five hurricane. milton, look at the eye on this storm as it is moving away from the yucatan peninsula. it is a monster storm headed towards the gulf coast of florida. landfall is expected sometime tomorrow night, so right now, packing winds of 160 miles an hour, it is starting to pick up speed northeast at 12 miles an hour and as it continues to inch closer to the west coast of florida, expected to be a category four tomorrow night, and as it approaches, there are going to be a number of life threatening situations in that vicinity. it is expected to weaken to a category one as it moves out over the atlantic, eventually to a depression. so let's talk about some of the concerns. rainfall half a foot to a foot, isolated areas up to 18in. that's going to lead to flooding. the flooding is going to be even worse. and devastating because of the storm surge. anywhere from 10 to 15ft, that wall of water just rushing on shore. and you take a look, there are watches and warnings

across a good chunk of florida. so they are in, for one, potentially catastrophic storm headed their way. >> ama all right, sandhya, thank you. we will check back with you later. the bay area's largest school district is in crisis. and tonight, san francisco unified is weighing dramatic changes for more than a dozen schools. it's an announcement months in the making, but that doesn't lessen the pain of possible closures. >> making these decisions is really difficult, but it's for the long term to ensure that our kids get what they need. >> superintendent matt wayne announced 11 schools that could close, mostly elementary schools. you can see the map of campuses on your screen. the district identified 15 other schools that could take in displaced students. the superintendent says school closures cannot be avoided with a $400 million deficit, shrinking student counts and the threat of a state takeover. >> we want to maintain local control, and we want to ensure that we have a balanced budget and that we are not continuing

to deficit spend. >> the superintendent will share the final list of closures in november, and the board will vote in december. abc seven news reporter tim johns brings us to one close knit campus where families and teachers are devastated that this school year may be their last. >> tucked away near the heart of san francisco's castro neighborhood lies the harvey milk civil rights elementary. for almost 30 years, the school has been a staple of a tight knit community. but after the san francisco unified school district announced the school was facing closure, this academic year may be its last. crushing news to parents like kiana ellzey, who attended the school herself in the 90s and now also sends her third grade daughter there. >> just to have the same people and the same faces, it just feels really good, feels like home, and it feels like family. >> ellzey was one of several parents who told us about their frustration and sadness over the school's possible closure tuesday afternoon. shani springfield says she worries her son, jimmy will have a difficult transition if he's forced to go to a new school next year.

>> i think it's going to be a challenge for him to adapt, to go to a new environment, you know, because he's used to staff in the school and his friends and stuff. >> parents, students and teachers say the closing of this school in particular hurts. they tell me the harvey milk academy is more than just a school to them. it's a place that represents the values, like the ones on the wall behind me. her, things like justice, freedom and acceptance. those values are something that the staff tries to teach their students every day, says teacher elise reynolds mccarty. she tells me she can't believe the district would choose to close a school that has served as a symbol of hope for many. >> they're talking about equity equity, but they're not considering the lgbtq plus community in this equity conversation. and it's blowing my mind. and i'm just i'm devastated right now. >> other staff members told us they feel like the district hasn't been open with them about the school closure process, several of them saying they don't know what they'll do if harvey milk shuts down. >> so much money has been wasted in silly things in this district, and now we're being closed by the end of the school day tuesday, many students had

seemingly heard the news, one in particular taking time to show us a poster she had made asking district leaders to keep her school open. >> all my friends and me are having fun, and i have a great teacher and we have fun. >> harvey milk teachers are planning to march wednesday afternoon to protest the school's possible closure in san francisco. tim johns abc seven news. >> shotspotter, the technology used to detect and alert police to gunfire, is one step closer to getting a renewed contract in oakland. after a contentious meeting this evening, the city's public safety committee recommended the city renew a three year, $2.5 million contract with fremont's sound thinking, which owns the technology. opponents of this technology questioned its accuracy, overall impact on police response times, and whether the money should be spent on other anti-violence programs. instead, the police department credited the technology with helping guide officers to violent crime and track shooting trends. the full

council will vote on the contract on october 15th. >> also in the east bay tonight, antioch city council moved forward with a plan to try to fill the vacancies in its depleted police department. it adopted a resolution to continue an incentive program to hire more officers, among them $10,000 for new dispatchers. along with signing bonuses. the city is also authorizing spending up to $350,000 through june of next year to keep the program going. >> all right, now to your voice, your vote tonight, the two candidates seeking to fill dianne feinstein's senate seat faced off on abc seven in a debate. this is the only scheduled forum between adam schiff and steve garvey. abc seven news anchor kristen sze was one of the panelists. she asked the candidates about their plans to tackle the cost of living. >> what specific policies would you try to advance to alleviate the cost of living burden on working and middle class families? >> let's get back to a free market capitalization supply side. let's start to get money

>> a redwood city church helps feed 1700 families each week. if we speed up this video, it shows a line of cars that stretches over three blocks. furbo is a church and a family services center. aside from worship and food distribution, the nonprofit provides after school programing for kids and esl classes for adults in the evenings. the space also transforms into an indoor soccer arena. pastor orlando cardona said 90% of the families that utilize the center are low income and spanish speaking. >> this is like a lighthouse for this community. it's a big need that we have to be able to stay in the building. >> starting november 1st, cardona said their rent will increase by 25%. that's five grand more each month. >> our fear is that we're not going to be able to pay the rent because of the situation. the economic situation, and we don't want to leave the area. >> vrbo has been in this space for 17 years. they have served the north fair oaks community for 25 years.

firefighters in monterey county will be working all night to contain the piney fire, as it's being called. this is time lapse of the first hours of this fire. it's burned about 100 acres. 80 acres so far, with no containment. there are mandatory evacuations in place along east carmel valley road and martin road. weather is shifting in firefighters favor tonight. that's good news. and fire crews from other communities are on their way to help out. pasetta for a day of activism and protest at uc berkeley. >> we've seen several rallies take place on campus calling attention to the conflict in the middle east. this evening, a sunset rally at cal brought out community members who wanted to stand in solidarity with palestinians. earlier today, a student and faculty staged a walkout despite claims they were told not to. >> did you walk out of an actual

class that you should be in? >> yes i did. i walked out of a class and you fear repercussions because of that? yes, i do, and because we have been told that there would be repercussions from sky seven, we saw some heated confrontations with counter protesters. >> today's protest remained largely peaceful. >> the race for the white house is running through california this week, with 27 days until election day. both campaigns are breaking away from the swing states for a time, trying to bring in some extra cash. democratic vice presidential candidate tim walz visited sacramento today with his daughter, hope, for a fund raiser at governor newsom's home. it's part of a west coast fundraising swing that began on sunday, and republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance is holding a fundraiser in

woodside. that's tomorrow night. former president trump also held a fundraiser back in woodside in september. it was hosted by tom and stacey siebel, distant relatives of governor newsom's wife, jennifer siebel newsom. trump is also planning a rally in the coachella valley this saturday. >> supervisors in santa cruz county have had enough when it comes to filtered tobacco products. today, the board unanimously passed a landmark bill to ban the sale of the product in unincorporated parts of the county. the reason they're sick and tired of the plastic cigarette butts littering the county's shoreline. merchants can still sell unfiltered cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products. the ordinance takes effect in 2027 and only in unincorporated parts of the county. >> new at 11. the department of justice is considering breaking up google as one of its solutions in a landmark antitrust case. google is accused of building a search engine monopoly. a judge agreed in august the plan would split

off parts of the tech company. a final proposal is expected to be filed by november 20th. google would then be able to respond with its own ideas. it does plan to appeal the monopoly ruling. one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence has won the nobel prize in physics. british canadian computer scientist geoffrey hinton happened to be fast asleep in california when his phone rang at 1:00 in the morning. >> i thought about whether i should answer it or not, and luckily i decided i would see who was calling and i was extremely surprised to get the nobel prize in physics. i never expected that. >> it's a pretty good wake up call, actually. hinton helped create the building blocks of machine learning. that's revolutionizing our lives right now. he notably quit a role at google so he could speak about the dangers associated with ai. hinton warns artificial intelligence will grow to become smarter than human minds, and we may not be able to control ai at

that point, which is what some are really concerned about. right now, we are just hours away from a casino collapsing in las vegas. >> yeah, it sits on the site of a planned ballpark for the a's. if the team can pull together the funding. >> that's still a bit up in the air. here's a live look at the tropicana las vegas hotel and casino, which is going to be imploded at 2:30 a.m. the trop has stood for 67 years on the famous strip and has a storied history, like most longtime vegas hotels. >> demolition crews have put a lot of preparation into the implosion in a concrete structure like the club tower. >> we're dealing with sticks of dynamite that you see in the cartoons, and then you'll start hearing bang, bang, bang bang, boom, boom boom. this structural come, this structural will begin to nose down. this one will come behind it. >> there's a lot that goes into it. this is the first las vegas hotel implosion since 2016. it's expected to take less than 30s to bring down the 222 story

lot of them on the embarcadero as ama mentioned, we do have carl the fog in the pictures. and that is going to help to drive our temperatures down. even more. so it's going to be comfortable for fleet week festivities. the air show mild and mainly sunny on friday, 72 degrees, a westerly breeze keeping it from getting too warm. saturday partly cloudy, a slight possibility of a few sprinkles, but it's not a game changer. the possibility of showers has scaled back, at least for san francisco. a better chance in the north bay sunday. clouds to sunshine and in the low 70s. certainly seeing those temperatures dropping tonight. 11 degrees cooler in livermore and san jose down ten in santa rosa. 6 degrees drop in san francisco and oakland. we take a look at the highs for today. we didn't have any triple digits in the 90s. inland 60s at the coast, san francisco dropping to 72 after a high in the 90s. yesterday, looking at the temperatures right now, anywhere from the 50s to the 70s. and we do have quite a bit

of fog out there. the breeze has been onshore 25 right now in fairfield. that breezy pattern is sticking with us tomorrow. so once again in the morning it will be lighter. and then in the afternoon, as we expect around this time of year, we'll get the stronger winds. this area of low pressure dropping in is setting the stage for pushing the high out a little bit, and that's going to keep that cooling trend going. so we look at live doppler seven. and there's certainly a lot of fog around not just near the coast but around the bay as well. visibility is reflecting this just over two miles and half moon bay over a mile in santa rosa. definitely be careful as we look at our highlights overnight areas of dense fog next few days. breezy with their cooling trend and this weekend we do have that slight chance of showers on saturday. let's look at tomorrow's forecast. starts out sunny inland in the 60s, warming up to the 80s and eventually to the low 90s in the warmest spots around the bay. fog to start the day and then partly cloudy to mostly sunny in the 70s eventually and fog will

be on the coast mid 50s. the coast is going to just see peeks of sun low to mid 60s later in the day. temperatures anywhere from the upper 40s to the low 60s. tomorrow morning. watch out for some mist and drizzle along with the fog, so you may need those wipers from time to time tomorrow afternoon. most areas are going to be in the 60s to 80s. we'll get maybe 1 or 2 low 90s around concord and santa rosa. now we're going to fast forward to the week ahead. thursday the first system comes in, doesn't do much more other than to continue the cooling trend. the next system that comes in on saturday that gives us an opportunity for a few showers saturday afternoon. but look at this. this system falls apart maybe a little sunday morning drizzle. and then it's done. in terms of rainfall, we are expecting anywhere from nothing measurable to perhaps a 10th of an inch in santa rosa. accuweather seven day forecast. watch out for the fog tomorrow morning. it is a cooler day, even cooler on thursday. more like autumn as we head towards the end of the week into the
