states, including california. officials say it poses a serious, dangerous threat to your children's mental health. tiktok's response this morning. good morning. it is wednesday, october 9th. >> we're going to begin with a check on the weather with spencer christian. spencer. good morning. >> okay. amanda. yes, amanda. reggie. good morning. weather conditions are good here in this little spare bedroom in my home. let's take a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see a gentle onshore breeze. right now. there are some areas of fog out there in the early morning hours, and we're starting the day much cooler than at this time yesterday. about 3 to 7 degrees cooler in most locations around the bay area. something we weren't seeing last week when we had all that heat. right now we're looking at temperatures in the mid 50s from san francisco down to san mateo. many other locations near the bay are in the low 60s right now, about 61 degrees, and in our inland areas, which will be the warmest regions eventually, as we get into the afternoon hours. right now we're looking at temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 50s. these are our

forecast headlines as we move along here. it's this morning. some foggy areas. as i mentioned next few days this cooling trend will continue with breezy conditions from time to time. and this weekend may bring us a slight chance of showers, mainly on saturday. so what are we looking at for high temperatures this afternoon? 69 here in san francisco, across the bay in oakland, 73 inland east bay, mainly mid 80s. concord, livermore and antioch. about 8586 degrees san jose will top out at 82 and up in the north bay, 78 at napa, but a warm 89 at santa rosa. now let's check out traffic with gloria. >> thank you so much. so far looking pretty good out there on the roads this morning. we have a live look at our golden gate bridge camera. and you can see it's not as clear as it's been. the last few days, but there isn't too much traffic out there at this time of the morning. so it's a good time to get on the bridge if you are driving out there. the bay bridge is starting to get a little busier right now, but no major delays driving into the city. you can see our overall map here mostly

in the green, so no issues other than that usual slowdown at the altamont pass. and looking at your drive times, you can see from tracy to dublin. 41 minutes. san rafael to san francisco 16 minutes and antioch to concord, 14 minutes. >> okay, gloria, thank you. >> teachers in san francisco are planning to march this afternoon after the district released its list of potential school closures. 11 campuses may shut down for good as san francisco unified faces a budget crisis. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live with what comes next. and lena, some families and teachers are devastated that this year, for the school year, i should say, may be their last. >> well, emotions were running high yesterday as many families found out their schools may be closing come the end of the school year. now, san francisco public montessori here behind me is just one of the 11 schools now on the chopping block. take a look at your screen right now. these are the schools that meet the criteria for closure. it includes nine elementary schools

and two high schools. harvey milk civil rights elementary school, near the heart of the city's castro neighborhood, is one of them. the superintendent says school closures can't be avoided with a $400 million deficit, shrinking student counts and the threat of a state takeover. it was crushing news to parents like kiana ellzey, who attended the school herself in the 90s and now also sends her third grade daughter there. >> miss frances was my second grade teacher. she's still here. she's been teaching my daughter. so just to have the same people and the same faces, it just feels really good. feels like home. and it feels like family. >> i think it's going to be a challenge for him to adapt, to go to a new environment. you know, because he's used to staff in the school and his friends and stuff. so i think it's going to be very challenging for my son. >> teachers at harvey milk say they are planning a march this afternoon at 2:00 to protest their school's possible closure. now, the superintendent will be

sharing a final list of the school closures in november, and the school board will vote on that final list as a whole in december. they will not be voting on individual schools. live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. happening now we are tracking hurricane milton now less than 24 hours from making landfall. the latest forecast showing landfall is most likely to happen late tonight near saint petersburg, florida. here's a live look this morning from key west, florida. you can see high winds moving into the region. the outer bands are already affecting the coast. and of course, there are evacuation orders this morning and tampa officials saying anyone who decides to stay is risking their life. the two main concerns right now debris still left from hurricane helene, which hit the area less than two weeks ago, and a potentially historic storm surge that could reach up to 15ft. >> say you're in a single story home. 12ft is above that house. so if you're in it, you know,

carmel valley is threatening homes. >> firefighters in monterey county have been on scene overnight working to contain the piney fire. this is a time lapse of the first hours of the fire. it has since burned 180 acres so far, with no containment. there are mandatory evacuations in place along east carmel valley road and martin road. fire crews from other communities are on the way to help. >> the race for the white house running through california this week with 26 days to election day, both campaigns breaking from swing states trying to bring in some extra cash. so tonight, republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance is holding a fundraiser in woodside. donald trump was in woodside just last month, and he's going to hold a rally in the coachella valley saturday. yesterday, democratic vice presidential candidate tim walz was in sacramento for a fundraiser at governor newsom's home. it's part of a west coast fundraising swing that began on sunday. and this morning we're hearing from vice president kamala harris about new allegations. donald trump secretly sent vladimir putin

goal is to improve the state's economy so everyone can prosper. governor newsom will participate in that summit. today, he'll discuss the state's economic strength and how current leaders are working to expand growth in different communities. the event, hosted by california forward, begins at 11 a.m. 14 states, including california, are suing tiktok. a new lawsuit claims the app was intentionally designed to get teens addicted to the social media platform. the state. the state also argued tiktok violated consumer protection laws and that it's contributed to a teen mental health crisis. california attorney general rob bonta and new york's attorney general have teamed up to lead this charge. >> there is a desire to protect our children, to secure their future, to protect their health, to ensure their safety. and so we're proud to be working in a multi-state, bipartisan way. >> the lawsuit calls on tiktok to change app features believed to be manipulative and harmful to teens. it also seeks financial penalties. a spokesperson for tiktok says the

company strongly disagrees with the lawsuit's claims, which they call inaccurate and misleading. their spokesperson went on to say, we're proud of and remain deeply committed to the work we've done to protect teens and will continue to update and improve our product. >> now to an update. four years in the making, camp okitsu is getting a new home. the camp supports children and families affected by childhood cancer. back in 2020, the north complex wildfires destroyed the facility in berry creek. this is northeast of oroville. camp okitsu has been searching for a permanent home ever since. and yesterday, the nonprofit announced it's found one at a ranch in calaveras county. while the property is being transformed, camp okitsu will continue to hold programs at several rental camps that it's been using since the fire. >> our heat wave is over, but we're continuing to follow the situation at ucsf parnassus campus. we first told you about this yesterday. some of the floors of the hospital don't have air conditioning, so it got

very hot inside. over the past week. we heard from some upset employees yesterday. now we're hearing from others, including a woman who requested we only identify her as chris. she says her late husband underwent a procedure at the hospital last fall. she describes the situation as uncomfortable for her, her spouse and the doctor. >> hot. his eyes were burning from perspiration. the surgeon came out and talked to us. the surgeon was drenched with perspiration. his scrubs were completely wet. >> staff have submitted multiple complaints. ucsf solution was to send cooling towels. when abc seven reached out to ucsf, they said, quote, we continue to regularly monitor temperatures in our buildings and are bringing staff and patients back to the impacted floors in accordance with cal osha standards and clinical guidance. the care's navigation center in oakland will receive $6 million in grant funding to expand its services. the center offers services to people as an alternative to jail or

prosecution over substance use and mental health related misdemeanors. alameda county district attorney pamela price says it's the largest grant the da's office has ever received. the program is one of 27 organizations in the state to receive the award. >> a proposal to redevelop pier 45 in san francisco is moving forward. the san francisco port commission voted to endorse the preliminary $550 million plan yesterday. it would bring a seafood market, a food hall, a museum and other new places to pier 45. advocates say the area needs to be revitalized to bring in more foot traffic. those who oppose the plan argue the city should focus instead on helping existing businesses. the proposal will now go to the board of supervisors. and new this morning, las vegas bidding farewell to the tropicana hotel and casino to make way for the new a's stadium on the las vegas strip. if the team can pull it all together regardless. >> the tropicana is gone. it went down just like you would

graduated from uc berkeley and ucsf. david baker won the prize alongside two other chemists, for their work on proteins. new developments in scott peterson's bid for a new trial. a san mateo county judge has granted him access to evidence, including police reports and interview transcripts, even recordings. the la innocence project has taken over peterson's case. they want a look at evidence connected to the burglary across the street that happened at the same time peterson's pregnant wife, laci, disappeared back in 2002. two years later, scott peterson was convicted of murder in the deaths of laci and their unborn son. peterson was sentenced to death, but that was later overturned and he was resentenced to life without parole. >> new information in a story we've been following in the south bay. the former executive director of the san jose police officers association pled guilty to drug smuggling in court yesterday. joanne segovia admitted to illegally importing more than 17,000 opioid pills

desperate struggle to find gas more than 30% of gas stations have already run dry in the fort myers naples area. it's been a, i would say, a tremendous task to get gas. and we just got word in the latest update that the hurricane is now getting larger and the wind field is widening. so we can expect some pretty widespread destruction here. amanda. >> all right. thank you. marina. developing news. the department of justice is considering asking a federal judge to break up mountain view based google. it comes after google's online search engine was ruled a monopoly. and, gloria, what could this mean for the future of the internet searching? >> well, amanda, the department of justice has been considering potential remedies since a landmark ruling in august found google illegally crushed competition in online search. in court documents yesterday revealed that one of these options would be forcing google's parent company, alphabet, to sell off some of its brands, like the chrome browser or its android operating

system. and you and i probably wouldn't notice a change at first, but eventually it could lead to more search competition. federal officials believe that competitors like amazon and other sites would have more room to grow. google plans to appeal. the company called the proposal radical. in a blog post, it said in part, quote, we are concerned the doj is already signaling requests that go far beyond the specific legal issues. in this case, the government seems to be pursuing a sweeping agenda that will impact numerous industries and products with significant unintended consequences for consumers, businesses, and american competitiveness. google claims that users prefer its search engine because of its quality, and says that users have the choice to set other search engines as their default. live in the studio, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. all right, gloria, thank you. >> well, the list is out. after months of delays, san francisco unified is finally revealing which schools are facing

the city may still be coming, but for fewer people. the board of supervisors approved a scaled back proposal yesterday. the revised ordinance will reach about 40,000 renters instead of the original 100,000. the current law will now only be expanded to include buildings built from 1979, up to 1994, instead of november of this year. that's according to supervisor aaron peskin, who is also running for mayor. success of the proposal hinges on prop 33 success, which would repeal a state law limiting local governments from enacting rent control. the ordinance still needs approval by the full board and the mayor. quality of life is better. better in san francisco was a major topic of discussion in our interviews with the top mayoral candidates. i, along with andy gallas from the sf standard and well-known author and podcaster kara swisher, had the opportunity last week to talk at length with london breed, mark farrell, daniel lurie, and aaron peskin. you can watch our special,

could not be met and keep boeing a competitive business. union members say the company is at fault for not making an acceptable offer and refusing to negotiate the offer that had been sent out to media outlets. both companies say they are eager to return to the table for more negotiations. >> lyft is offering new incentives for its drivers and adding new drivers to its force. the ride hailing company will soon be giving drivers with good driving records more riders. the company has also shared its plan to pay drivers extra for any ride that is five minutes over the expected drive time. drivers will also get to see how much they may make hourly for a ride, to see if it's worth their time. the supreme court heard arguments on whether ghost guns should be regulated like normal firearms. ghost guns are typically sold as parts online, which are then self-assembled. these guns have no serial numbers, making it very hard to trace the case. the court is looking at centers around

president biden's executive action, requiring companies to add serial numbers to ghost guns and run background checks on buyers. pro gun groups say the weapon kits don't meet the definition of a firearm, according to the atf. the number of ghost guns recovered by police increased more than 1,000% from 2017 to 2021. fleet week treat, the first marine division brass band serenaded families in noe valley as part of this week's neighborhood concert series. musical ensembles from both the marine corps, the navy and air force are performing all throughout the city. this week, and it's all for free. today, there will also be a ship tour on the uss somerset from pier 27. that's at 10 a.m. at noon. the first marine division brass band quintet will play at the yerba buena gardens stone stage and later in the evening at five, the usaf band of the golden west mobility will put on

a show at pier 39 at the embarcadero. the uss hornet held a commemoration for vietnam war veterans. it's part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the vietnam war, an initiative by the defense secretary to make up for the mistreatment vietnam vets and their families experience when they came back home. >> the vietnam veteran did not come home to parades or honors. the vietnam veteran was told when they landed here in san francisco to get out of your uniform so nobody spits on you or assaults you when you walk down the street. and as a country now, we recognize this was wrong. the vietnam veteran changed the culture of how the united states treats its warriors. >> it was also a chance for vietnam veterans to share their stories with each other. and with active duty sailors, marines and coast guardsmen in town for fleet week in honor of fleet week, active duty military personnel can ride the skystar wheel at fisherman's wharf for free. >> now through friday. they just need to show their military ids for a free ride. the wheel is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
