outside this morning. looks pretty dark from our tam cam. it is finally cooling down across the bay area. we know spencer is here with the details on the relief we're seeing after a long heat wave. we couldn't see anything there. >> spencer my friend. >> that's right. >> we finally got the sleeves. do you know how long it's been since you slept? >> i yes, i know. i mean, that heat wave was ridiculous. it lasted more than a week. this is the first day, i think, in nine days. now that we have not had some kind of heat alert, which is certainly good news. so i guess it doesn't matter that we can't see. at least it's getting cooler. here's the satellite radar composite image. you can see some weather disturbances out at sea moving generally in our direction, but for the next few days we'll have calm and dry conditions. in fact, the winds are pretty calm right now, except for 13 mile per hour breezes in san francisco and you can see on the 24 hour temperature change. it is several degrees cooler in virtually all bay area locations, noticeably cooler than at this time yesterday. so

right now it's 56, in san francisco, 61 in oakland and hayward, most inland areas are in the mid 50s right now. as we get into the afternoon, we can expect partly cloudy skies. they'll be skies will be bright high temperatures ranging from low 60s at the coast to mid 70s around the bay shoreline to mainly mid 80s inland. a lovely and not hot fall day. let's check on traffic. good morning gloria. >> good morning. i think i'm a little weird because i actually like the heat. the hotter the better. so. but i know a lot of people really love this cooldown. we're looking live right here at our emeryville camera, and you can see starting to really get busy there on the west side of the freeway. if you're heading from highway four to the toll plaza, that will take you 54 minutes and looking live here at our bay bridge toll plaza camera, you can see just how busy it is out there right now. the metering lights are on. they flipped on just after 5.30 this morning. we'll keep tracking that for you throughout the morning. looking at your drive times, highway four to the maze 23 minutes antioch to hercules, 35 minutes. and then

highway 85 to the san jose airport, seven minutes. >> all right, gloria, thank you. teachers in san francisco are planning to march this afternoon after the district released its list of potential school closures. 11 campuses may shut down for good as san francisco unified faces a massive budget crisis. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live with what comes next. and lena, some families and teachers are devastated. this school year may be their last. >> yeah, amanda, that's right. and emotions were absolutely running high yesterday as families learned their schools may be closing by the end of this school year. now, san francisco public montessori right here behind me is just one of the 11 schools now on the chopping block. take a look at your screen right now. these are the schools that meet the criteria for closure. it includes nine elementary schools and two high schools. harvey milk civil rights elementary school, near the heart of the city's castro neighborhood, is

one of them. the superintendent says school closures can't be avoided, with a $400 million deficit shrinking student counts and the threat of a state takeover. it was crushing news to parents like kiana ellzey, who attended the school herself in the 90s and now sends her third grade daughter there. >> miss frances was my second grade teacher. she's still here. she's been teaching my daughter. so just to have the same people and the same faces, it just feels really good. feels like home, and it feels like family. >> i think it's going to be a challenge for him to adapt, to go to a new environment. you know, because he's used to staff in the school and his friends and stuff. so i think it's going to be very challenging for my son. >> teachers at harvey milk say they are planning a march this afternoon at 2:00 to protest their school's possible closure. the superintendent will share the final list of closures come november, and the school board will vote on that final list as a whole in december. they will

not be voting on individual schools. live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> happening now. we're tracking hurricane milton now less than 24 hours from making landfall. the latest track showing landfall is most likely to happen late tonight near saint petersburg, florida. here's a live look this morning from key west. you can see that it is already starting to affect the winds. if you can look at the trees at the bottom of the screen there, these are the outer bands of the storm now hitting some parts of florida and tampa. officials say anyone who decides to stay is risking their life. the two main concerns right now. debris still left from hurricane helene, which hit the area less than two weeks ago, and a potentially historic storm surge that could reach up to 15ft. >> say you're in a single story home. 12ft is above that house, so if you're in it, you know, basically that's the coffin that you're in. >> some evacuees are staying in

georgia, where there is now a storm shelter. >> we are so grateful that the atlanta motor speedway has opened up their facilities to allow evacuees to come. worrying about my family and my friends back home is the worst part. >> some of the last flights out of florida landed in san francisco last night. travelers told us they're relieved to be out of the storm's path. >> luckily, the hurricane slowed down a little bit, so it's going to arrive tomorrow. we barely missed it. >> i'm from florida, so we've been through quite a few. but yeah, it uh- it's pretty. it's a big one. >> milton strengthened back into a category five hurricane yesterday. it's now been downgraded to a four and is expected to weaken to a three before making landfall. forecasters say milton has the potential to be one of florida's most destructive hurricanes on record. >> a wildfire burning now in the carmel valley is threatening homes. firefighters in monterey county have been on scene overnight working to contain the piney fire. what you're looking at is a time lapse of the first

hours of that fire. it has since burned 180 acres so far, with no containment. there are mandatory evacuations in place along east carmel valley road and martin road. fire crews from other communities are on their way to help. >> the race for the white house is running through california this week with 26 days to election day. both campaigns are breaking from swing states, trying to bring in some extra cash. so tonight, republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance is holding a fundraiser in woodside. donald trump was in woodside last month. he'll hold a rally in the coachella valley saturday. yesterday, democratic vice presidential candidate tim walz was in sacramento for a fundraiser at governor newsom's home. it's part of a west coast fundraising swing that began on sunday. >> donald trump, former president, is responding to allegations about his relationship with vladimir putin. the new controversy stemmed from journalist bob woodward's upcoming book war. in it. woodward says trump sent covid 19 tests to russia for

summit. the goal is to improve the state's economy so everyone can prosper. governor newsom will participate in the summit. today, he'll discuss the state's economic strength and how current leaders are working to expand growth in different communities. the event, hosted by california forward, starts at 11 a.m. 14 states, including california, are suing tiktok. a new lawsuit claims the app was intentionally designed to get teens addicted to the social media platform. the states also argue tiktok violated consumer protection laws, has contributed to a teen mental health crisis. california attorney general rob bonta and new york's attorney general have teamed up to lead this. >> there is a desire to protect our children, to secure their future, to protect their health,

to ensure their safety. and so we're proud to be working in a multi-state, bipartisan way. >> the lawsuit calls on tiktok to change app features believed to be manipulative and harmful to teens. it also seeks financial penalties. a spokesperson for tiktok says the company strongly disagrees with the lawsuit's claims, which they call, quote, inaccurate and misleading. the spokesperson went on to say, we're proud of and remain deeply committed to the work we've done to protect teens and will continue to update and improve our product. our heatwaves, our heat wave is over, but we're still following what happened at ucsf parnassus campus. we first told you about this yesterday. some of the floors of the hospital do not have air conditioning. we heard from some upset employees yesterday about how hot it's been. now we're hearing from others, including patients. one woman who requested we only identify her as chris, says that her late husband underwent a procedure at the hospital last fall. she describes the situation as uncomfortable for her, her spouse and the doctor.

>> hot. his eyes were burning from perspiration. the surgeon came out and talked to us. the surgeon was drenched with perspiration. his scrubs were completely wet. >> staff have submitted multiple complaints. ucsf solution was to send cooling towels. when abc seven reached out to ucsf, they said, quote, we continue to regularly monitor temperatures in our buildings and are bringing staff and patients back to the impacted floors in accordance with cal osha standards and clinical guidance. >> on the peninsula, a community group working to build a better bay area is facing an obstacle we see all too often. it's facing a rent increase that could stop decades of support for people in redwood city's fair oaks community. starting november 1st, vrbo churches rent will go up by 25%. that's five grand more each month. church leaders are worried about being able to cover the rent increase and hope to stay in the community. they have served for 25 years. >> this is like a lighthouse for

fair oaks community. it's a big need that we have to be able to stay in the building. >> vrbo church offers food distribution, after school programing for kids and esl classes for adults, among other things. the pastor says donations are welcome. if someone has a long term solution, he would also love to talk to you about it. >> the cares navigation center in oakland will receive $6 million in grant funding to expand its services. the center offers services to people as an alternative to jail or prosecution over substance use and mental health related misdemeanors. alameda county district attorney pamela price says it's the largest grant the da's office has ever received. the program is one of 27 organizations in the state to receive the award. >> a proposal to redevelop pier 45 in san francisco is moving forward. the san francisco port commission voted to endorse the preliminary $550 million plan yesterday. it would bring a seafood market, a food hall, a museum and other new places to

about why storm surge is such a killer and how easy it is to avoid. >> are most of the people gone by now where you are? >> oh yeah. here. they're not messing around. these people were the people that floated in ian. they lost neighbors. they lost dozens of people, probably along this very street. so i don't see we haven't seen a soul. and the police have stopped anyone from coming in. and so now will be the last to get out. and hopefully that's going to be the case all the way up and down. these barrier islands. but i have to say, reggie, i heard a story this morning about somebody that was staying on siesta key and another person that was like, i'm riding it out in anna maria island. no, i don't know how to emphasize enough. first responders would put their own lives at risk then to get you. and so if there's a chance that you have to get out, it is now, if you know a family or friend that is on the south side of tampa bay area, especially on the beaches, and they're in an evacuation zone, go. >> all right, ginger, and we will let you go and good luck.

seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. developing news this morning. the department of justice is considering asking a federal judge to break up mountain view based google. it comes after google's online search engine was ruled a monopoly. and glori, what could this mean for the future of internet searching? >> well, amanda, the department of justice has been considering potential remedies since a landmark ruling in august found google illegally crushed competition in online search. in court documents yesterday revealed that one of those options would be forcing google's parent company, alphabet, to sell off some of its brands, like the chrome browser or its android operating system. and you and i probably wouldn't notice a change at first, but eventually it could lead to more search competition. federal officials believe that competitors like amazon and other sites would have more room to grow. google plans to appeal. the company called the proposal radical in a blog post, it said in part, quote, we are concerned that the doj is already signaling requests that go far

beyond the specific legal issues in this case, the government seems to be pursuing a sweeping agenda that will impact numerous industries and products with significant unintended consequences for consumers, businesses, and american competitiveness. google claims that users prefer its search engine because of its quality, and says that users have the choice to set other search engines as their default reggie aqui. >> thanks, gloria. new developments in scott peterson's bid for a new trial. a san mateo county judge has granted him access to evidence, including police reports and interview transcripts and recordings. the la innocence project has taken over peterson's case. they want to look at evidence connected to the burglary across the street. that happened the same time peterson's pregnant wife, laci, disappeared in 2002. two years later, scott peterson was convicted of murder in the deaths of laci and their unborn son. peterson was sentenced to death that was later overturned, and he was resentenced to life

without parole. >> new information in a story we've been following in the south bay, the former executive director of the san jose police officers association had pleaded guilty to drug smuggling in court yesterday. joanne segovia admitted to illegally importing more than 17,000 opioid pills into the u.s. segovia claims her own addiction fueled her crimes. her attorney hopes the judge considers segovia's efforts to recover lack of criminal history and other factors when deciding her sentence. analysts say it might not be that simple. >> is there going to be a message sent here that is above and beyond the average citizen? because of her position within the police department and to other people who may want to get involved in this kind of international trafficking, this is not going to be tolerated. >> segovia faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. she will be back in court for sentencing in january. >> new developments san

francisco's plan to expand rent control in the city may still be coming, but for fewer people. the board of supervisors approved a scaled back proposal yesterday. this revised ordinance will reach about 40,000 renters instead of the original 100,000. the current law will now be expanded to include buildings built from 1979 up to 1994. originally, they wanted to make that all the way until november of this year. that's according to supervisor aaron peskin, who's also running for mayor. success of this proposal hinges on the passage of prop 33, which would repeal a state law limiting local governments from enacting rent control. the ordinance still needs approval by the full board and the mayor. >> new this morning, the nobel prize in chemistry was awarded overnight to a person who graduated from uc berkeley and ucsf, david baker won the prize alongside two other chemists for their work on proteins. baker developed an artificial intelligence model that helps create new proteins. those new

it was going to istanbul. the pilot got sick and died mid-flight, prompting an emergency landing at jfk in new york. that plane landed safely at the airport. turkish airlines released a statement which can be translated to when the first medical intervention to our captain on the plane was ineffective, the cockpit crew decided to make an emergency landing. our captain lost his life before landing. we wish god's mercy upon our captain and patience to his grieving family and all his colleagues and loved ones. >> new this morning, las vegas bidding farewell to the tropicana hotel and casino to make way for the a's new stadium

on the las vegas strip. that's only if the team can pull it all together. now, this all went down in a very vegas fashion, complete with fireworks and a drone show. all the making, all of this at 230 in the morning. the tropicana hotel towers tumbled in about 22 seconds, but the fireworks show before the implosion lasted over six minutes. the moment the fireworks stopped and the two buildings came down. it was the third oldest casino on the strip, and it welcomed guests for nearly 70 years. this was the first las vegas hotel implosion since 2016, when the final tower of the riviera was leveled. the a's still have to

get to las vegas. they still have to finalize financing and lease agreements and they don't even have final designs for the ballpark yet. if the a's can pull everything together, they hope to start playing in las vegas by 2028. >> we see robo taxis a lot in san francisco. if you've ever taken one, you probably liked it. and a new survey is showing that you're not alone. researchers at j.d. power found robo taxi passengers rated the ride experience about 8.5 out of ten. they say the biggest contributor to the high rating was the vehicle technology. the survey also found that confidence in robo taxis was at 76% for riders. researchers surveyed over 3500 people from cities with robo taxi taxis, including san francisco. >> new at six could a gondola become a part of the san francisco landscape? county officials are trying to figure out if this could become a reality. the county transportation authority approved about $170,000 in funding yesterday to study how a
