steamy splash. full steam ahead. it's the perfect escape. and exactly what the doctor ordered. unresponsive patient in the florida, slicing a path of devastation across the state, coming in like a tsunami. >> youuys, the storm is losing some of its strength tonight, but none of the danger. >> the next few hours are going to be rough here in tampa. >> brutal winds ripping the roof off a baseball stadium. right now. the dramatic storm surge forecasters feared is hitting the coast this water, if it goes up to 12 to 15ft, like they're saying, a lot of people will die. >> we have team coverage tracking the devastation where the storm is heading next, and how the bay area is standing by, ready to help tonight on abc seven news at 11.

>> from abc seven live. breaking news. >> hurricane milton is slamming florida tonight. the storm packing just as much of a punch as forecasters feared. >> it is a life threatening situation, a flooding emergency plus relentless wind and rain hammering the state. milton just weakened to a category one in the last 30 minutes, but it is still posing a threat. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the storm proving deadly before it even made landfall tonight, when one of more than 100 reported tornadoes touched down. >> tonight, we have crews from florida to california tracking the damage and the forecast. abc news reporter jacqueline lee leads off our team coverage from tampa. now that hurricane milton has made landfall, the conditions here in tampa have deteriorated rapidly. >> you can see just how strong the wind gusts are with the rain. we are getting a lashing. we are getting about 85 mile an hour winds here and it is just so powerful. hurricane milton. now of course, at this point the

huge concern is the storm surge. at this point, obviously no one can evacuate. everyone is hunkered down and hopefully well prepared for the storm. >> jacqueline is reporting from the third floor of a parking garage built to withstand a category five, so we believe she is quite safe where she is, but very intense. the storm is already so destructive just hours after making landfall. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is here with a look at the damage we are already seeing tonight. tim. >> yeah, dan, the images coming out of florida are truly astonishing since making landfall just a couple of hours ago, milton has submerged entire city streets underwater, throwing cars around due to those intense winds and even ripped part of the roof off of tropicana field in tampa. hurricane milton making landfall in florida wednesday night, leaving destruction in its path. >> i am scared to death of some of these storm surge levels. the values are absolutely dangerous and deadly. >> the storm's intense winds and heavy rainfall already causing substantial damage earlier in the day. over 100 tornadoes also

touching down across the state. video obtained by abc seven news. even shows a part of the roof of tropicana field in tampa. being ripped off for days. both state and federal officials have been telling residents to evacuate, warning them of the potential catastrophic consequences if they don't. that time to leave now. over. >> don't try to go out now. don't try to say, i got to get out of here and get to a shelter because you'll you will die. >> among those who fled the tampa area include former east bay residents jose dalldorf and her boyfriend michael. the pair relocated to florida back in june. on tuesday, they packed up their belongings and drove to jacksonville to get out of milton's path. >> it took us 5.5 hours and it said it was only supposed to take three hours and 25 minutes, but because of all the traffic, everyone evacuating the craziness of orlando, then it took us 5.5 hours, dalldorf says. >> coming from california, the back to back hurricanes of helene and now milton have been terrifying and unlike anything she's ever experienced in the past. she tells me she and

michael have been closely following the developments around tampa, and are unsure of when they'll be able to go back home. >> we have our at least the hotel room till friday morning. i don't know if we need to extend it if we will be able to beyond the timeline, dalldorf says there's also other unknowns facing the couple in the coming hours, too, but for now, she's just thankful to be safe. we also don't know what the state of our house will be at when we get back, or if we're going to be able to get back. if the roads are going to be clear or flooded, or if we'll have power. >> now, thankfully, no one was hurt when that portion of the tropicana field roof collapsed. as of now, the cities of tampa and orlando have halted all emergency services until it is safe for first responders to be outside again. there are currently more than 2 million people without power across florida, a number that is expected to only keep growing. live in the studio tonight tim johns, abc seven news. >> yes, certainly. this is just the beginning. thank you. tim, let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya milton is far from finished tonight. that's right. >> ama, just getting started with milton. take a look. flash

flood emergencies in effect. right now as milton is still holding to on hurricane strength. it has brought damaging winds across the region, making landfall earlier today. this was near siesta key, florida, as a category three hurricane with 120 mile an hour winds widening. the picture her. multiple watches and warnings in effect, the biggest issue right now is the flash flooding that is ongoing. current stats 90 mile an hour winds 125 mile an hour gusts. it is moving to the east northeast at 16. but as i mentioned, still a cat one expected to weaken further as it moves out over the atlantic by friday, becoming a depression. it is going to continue to dump more rain and cause more severe flooding across the region. we're talking 8 to 14in, up to 18in in isolated spots. the storm surge 6 to 9ft in the highest locations. this is going to be one for the record books. let's take a look at some of the stats. damaging and devastating, without a doubt. 93 to 105 mile

an hour wind gusts have been reported. rainfall over 18in saint petersburg. dozens of tornadoes, 2 million people without power. you can see all the storm damage there. over 130 reports there, and it has been raining. it has been windy. you can see a live view right now and this is what it looked like just moments ago in the florida area. so it is going to be a long couple of days ahead. >> dan it will and daybreak tomorrow is probably going to shock a lot of people. sandy when we really see this damage. thank you. hundreds of firstonde ready to help either. already in florida or on their way right now. tonight, governor newsom deployed 70 more search and rescue crews out of menlo park and orange county down south. that's on top of nearly 150 others sent earlier this week. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has a look at the challenges those california crews may face. >> paramedics and emts are making the 40 hour drive from hayward to south florida on

tuesday night. two strike teams prepped and packed ambulances from the 9-1-1 ambulance provider for alameda county. >> it could be anything from aiding evacuations, taking over the ambulance, transport for our community. that's that's hard hit or, you know, but they'll receive an assignment when they arrive. >> the managing director, david torres, said when he pulled for volunteers, more than 100 offered to go. >> it shows how resilient they are. i think their their daily work is tenuous and stressful and busy, but they're willing to drop everything. >> last friday, p-g-and-e's deployed teams from sacramento to georgia so they could respond to hurricane helene. earlier this week, crews headed to fort lauderdale, florida. >> this response for pg and e is actually a record breaking. we are sending more than 400 uh- crew members and personnel over to the east coast, and that is the largest number of mutual aid we have sent to a disaster. >> on wednesday, two more san

francisco fire department search dogs were deployed to assist with hurricane milton. bosco and riva are trained to find victims and people in need. >> it's something you never thought you'd see. it's like the end of the world, right? >> in some ways, former menlo park fire chief harold homan was part of a water rescue team who spent 30 days responding to katrina. >> i mean, you really couldn't stay clean. and we actually, at some point quit shaving because if you cut yourself, you had a higher tendency to get an infection. and based upon the areas we were working in, the water was so polluted. >> homan has responded to roughly 20 hurricanes in his career with fema, urban search and rescue teams. he says the crews still on the way will have a critical role to play in the response, long after milton is gone. >> what we do today is, and you can see it is we try and get on either side of the hurricane so that we're not in it, but we're close. and then as it goes through, it's almost like a football play, you know, that that runner or that hurricane

goes through and then you come in right behind it. >> in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> and you know, you can help, too, if you'd like to help people who are affected by hurricane milton, you can donate to the red cross. scan the qr code that you see here on your screen, left hand side, or visit redcross.org slash abc. >> of course, we'll stay on top of the storm, but let's move on for the moment. new details tonight. in the case of a cal fire firefighter who is accused of becoming a fire setter in the north bay. the report says investigators put him under surveillance and used his cell phone to identify him as a suspect. the press democrat says a court filing this week by prosecutors details how they tracked him down following a fire in august. he had the only detectable cell phone in that area. investigators then put a gps tracking device on his vehicle. prosecutors say they tracked him to four other fires that he is accused of setting. >> we are following the story as san francisco unified ways. potential school closures. tomorrow will be the first opportunity for families across

the district to get their questions answered at a virtual town hall. the families at one neighborhood school they aren't waiting to express their concern. dozens of parents packed an emergency pta meeting tonight at sutro elementary. parents say sutro is the only chinese bilingual school in san francisco's richmond district, and they don't want it to close. >> we need to have a chance to understand how this decision has been made. you know, what is the process? why is it us and for them to target schools that really have majority of people like me who are actually chinese speaking, first generation immigrant families and monolingual? this is if we're talking about equity. this is not what it looks like. >> the district plans to close or merge 13 schools in all, as it faces a $400 million budget deficit. the final list of schools to close won't come out until next month, with a vote set for december. >> and turning to your voice, your vote. as young people in our area are getting an

education in politics, with the final push to election day. a group in the north bay is less worried about who you're voting for, and more focused on whether you're voting at all. local kids are the faces of a new campaign trying to get out the vote. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has their message from the north bay. >> these banners in marin city are tough to miss. drive down donahue street and the message is clear. >> i'm too young to vote. what is your excuse? >> those are the exact words written beside her photo. eight year old cashmere gomez. one of the faces of this get out the vote campaign, showing people to vote and do the right thing. >> do do the right thing. >> felicia gaston is the executive director of performing stars, a nonprofit helping underserved kids in marin city. and the brains behind this project. >> what inspired me to work on this banner project is because different friends of mine were

very disillusioned about voting, and so the longtime voter registration volunteer approached the marin county elections department and partnered up the city, serving up its main drag. it's where the golden gate transit is. marin transit people are going from here to san francisco. they're going to the east bay. so it's going to encourage more and more people, not just the people of marin city. >> and cashmere says she's proud to be a part of it. what are you hoping this campaign will help do? what do you what do you hope happens? >> make more people want to vote. >> and she knows exactly why her face on this banner matters. >> because it depends on my future. >> how do you think these images can help connect voters to the election? >> because either people have children or they have nieces or nephews. they have cousins. they're like, you know what? let's make sure that we're voting for their future. because

across the state. this is a live look right now. we've been getting some pretty dramatic images out of tampa saint petersburg area. of course, by daybreak tomorrow, those images will be even more stunning. milton actually made landfall to the south, but is a massive storm that is causing a lot of damage and flooding. it is expected to pass just south of orlando overnight while it is weakening. forecasters expect it to remain a hurricane for a while longer, and misinformation is proving to be a real challenge for first responders. it is. >> president biden went after former president trump today for what he called, quote, an onslaught of lies regarding the federal response to hurricane helene and the planned response to milton over the last few weeks, there's been reckless and irresponsible and relentless promotion of disinformation and outright lies about what's going on. >> it's undermining confidence in the people of florida, and it's harmful to those who most

need the help. quite frankly, these lies are un-american. >> biden today also condemned a conspiracy theory that the government was controlling the weather in some way, saying it was, quote, beyond ridiculous. >> scientists are pointing to human caused climate change as one reason why we're seeing stronger storms like hurricanes helene and milton more often. helene roared onshore 13 days ago as the strongest hurricane on record to hit florida's big bend region. it's also the deadliest storm to hit the united states since katrina. >> the closeness of these two storms really symbolizes something that could happen in the future and the danger of climate change, which is that you could have multiple events that have been made, each more destructive by climate change affecting the same area in quick succession, which is when the impacts start to become kind of really catastrophic. >> researchers say climate change increased the rainfall from helene by 10%, and the sustained winds by 11%. we are

keeping. abc seven news.com updated with the latest on hurricane milton. you can follow the forecast and the new developments as they happen anytime on our website or the abc seven news app. >> the san mateo county board of supervisors is calling on governor newsom to declare a state of emergency over the insurance crisis. the resolution asks the governor, state lawmakers and the insurance commissioner to take immediate action to strengthen and stabilize the home insurance market. some insurance companies have dropped coverage for hundreds of thousands of homeowners. maybe this has happened to you or are no longer issuing new policies to people living in fire prone areas. >> san francisco could soon be home to a new gondola system. the county transportation authority approved a $170,000 in dollars in funding to study how a gondola system could impact the city. it would transport people between laguna honda hospital and the forest hill light rail station. the study would also consider other

gondola locations in the city. >> all right. if you missed seeing the northern lights in may, when they were visible over the bay area, you may get another chance starting tomorro. noaa forecasters issued a rare g4 geomagnetic storm watch, saying a moderate solar storm is expected to reach earth on thursday and friday. noaa says most of the northern half of the country will have a chance at seeing the aurora borealis, including all of us here in northern california. that's kind of nice. >> i did miss it in may. i will be trying to find it. >> me too. >> all right, let's get a check on the weather now. >> meteorologist sandia patel is back with our forecast. sandy. >> yeah, and our forecast is looking good. dan and ama, in comparison to what's happening back east. let me show you a live picture right now from our pier 39 camera. visibility looks like this. and we may have actually a shot if we look to the north. but of course, best viewing in northern california for the aurora. as we look at another vantage point from sunset at 639 mount tam cam, it was absolutely beautiful with the high clouds coming

through the region. we did have a lot of color today. certainly had the fog around. temperatures dropped off today along with the high cloud cover, so it was a cooler day and it felt like fall. so this first system that is coming through has been mostly a cloud maker and a cooldown. the second system that is coming in on saturday, that one could bring a few showers. i'll show you that in just a moment. right now we are under a bank of clouds on live doppler seven. your temperatures anywhere from the 60s to the 70s. thanks to the cloud cover, the numbers are actually running higher than 24 hours ago. right now, from our santa cruz camera. the fog is around. the breeze is not an issue, but watch out! visibility will be low along parts of the coast tomorrow. a combination of fog and high clouds. friday you get that fall feel near average and saturday a chance of showers coming your way in the north bay. but don't you worry for fleet week festivities, everything should be just fine. so let's talk about this friday. mild a mix of sun and clouds 71 degrees, a westerly wind to 13. on saturday

it is going to be cloudier. there will be some morning drizzle. breezy in the afternoon. i think the clouds will break up enough for the air show and on sunday we are talking about 69 degrees clouds giving way to blue skies and breezy conditions going hour by hour. tomorrow morning we will have the fog and the higher clouds up above those clouds will begin to thin out by tomorrow night. a lot more clearing expected going into friday. so your morning temperatures 50s and 60s out the door tomorrow afternoon. it's going to be a nice day once again. temperatures will range from the low to mid 80s inland right near the coast, and the low 60s about where you should be for this time of year. now we fast forward to saturday. here comes the rain up in northern california heading into the early morning hours. a few showers may make it down all the way to the north bay at 8 a.m. watch as we fast forward to 1130. could be a little drizzle along the coast and in the city, but best chance of seeing any measurable precip will be in the northern part of our viewing area. this is reflected rainfall
