parents and students hope to get some more questions answered during a virtual town hall. good morning. it is thursday, october 10th. a lot to get to, but we'll begin with the check of the weather with spencer. >> oh, yeah. well, we have much calmer conditions here. i'm happy to say that in florida, it's good that folks there took those warnings seriously because this is a dangerous storm. but here in the bay area right now, we're looking at very calm conditions. we still have a series of small impulses out at sea, moving generally in our direction, but no major storms coming in. and the wind is really calm right now. so let's take a look at current temperature readings. it's 58 degrees here in san francisco down along the peninsula. we've got temperatures in the mid 50s right now, 60 on the other side of the bay at oakland and hayward, up in the north bay, 50 at santa rosa, sonoma. a little cool in some of those spots, but the inland east bay is mild right now with many locations into the 60s already. these are our forecast headlines. we've got some morning patchy fog and light drizzle that will move out by midday, giving way to brighter skies, but certainly a slow start to the morning

tomorrow. friday's fall feeling will be with us. temperatures continue to drop. it will feel a lot more autumn like and we'll have some approaching showers which are likely to come in on saturday. mainly a north bay event, the showers on saturday, but still we'll see a little wet weather here and some measurable rainfall is likely. but for this afternoon, dry conditions getting sunnier in the afternoon with some lingering high clouds, high temperatures, low 60s at the coast, 68 here in san francisco. low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline, mainly low to mid 80s inland so no extremes, just a mild early fall day. and let's check out what's happening with the traffic with gloria. oh no. >> first we're going to take folks to florida to florida i want to show you this picture from new smyrna beach, which is on the east coast of florida, the atlantic coast. as you can see, now that we have daylight, we are just getting now the a fuller picture of what was left behind by hurricane milton this morning. we know at least four people have died. more than 3 million are without power. the storm made landfall in siesta key near sarasota last night as

a category three storm. overnight, it weakened to a category one as it moved across the state. video shows streets and buildings submerged underwater, cars knocked over. and what you were just looking at. there was a part of the roof of tropicana field ripped off in tampa. officials have been telling residents to evacuate for days. among those who did evacuate, former east bay residents, jose dalldorf and her boyfriend michael, their drive out of tampa took an extra two hours because of all the traffi. >> we also don't know what the state of our house will be at when we get back, or if we're going to be able to get back, if the roads are going to be clear or flooded, or if we'll have power. >> more than 100 tornadoes hit the state yesterday before milton even made landfall, the cities of tampa and orlando halted emergency services last night. this morning, rescue crews are out in boats helping people who are stranded in flood waters, and hundreds of first responders from california are on their way to help. >> the state deployed 70 more

search and rescue crews out of menlo park and orange county. that's on top of the nearly 150 others sent earlier this week. and gloria is at the live desk with how else california is helping gloria. good morning. >> amanda. paramedics and emts are making the 40 hour drive from hayward to south florida. strike teams prepared and packed ambulances from the 9-1-1 ambulance provider for alameda county. managing director, chief david torres says more than 100 people offered to go when he asked for volunteers. they will help with anything they can, including evacuations and ambulance transports. two more search dogs from san francisco fire were deployed to assist with hurricane milton. bosco and riva are trained to find any potential victims and people in need. we spoke with former menlo park fire chief harold chapel home about how first responders tackle hurricanes. >> we try and get on either side of the hurricane so that we're not in it, but we're close. and

the first of a series of public town halls for families like those coming from san francisco public montessori. now, the point of these town halls, according to the superintendent, is that they want to discuss their budget process and also challenges. and they want to hear from people at all. 13 of these impacted school sites. but last night, the families at sutro elementary school were not waiting to express their concerns. dozens of parents packed an emergency pta meeting. parents say sutro is the only chinese bilingual school in san francisco's richmond district, and they don't want it to close. >> we need to have a chance to understand how this decision has been made. you know, what is the process? why is it us and for them to target schools that really have majority of people like me who are actually chinese speaking, first generation immigrant families and monolingual? this is if we're talking about equity. this is not what it looks like.

>> sfusd used criteria to close a school is based on several factors, including having 260 students or fewer, and in the case of elementary schools, a low composite score, meaning a calculation of students achievements and facility conditions, among others, based off their criteria. three schools would close, two would become welcoming schools, and eight schools are set to merge. we asked the superintendent to clarify when we talk about mergers, we're talking about when students from one school, the whole student body is able to go to another school. >> so those two schools are merging together. whereas when we have students who are going to multiple schools, we're saying that that school is closing and that's not a merger. >> the district is set to submit a budget report to the state in december to show they are taking action to tackle the $400

of light drizzle closer to the coastline. tomorrow we'll have friday's fall feeling expanding itself will be a little bit cooler and more fall like. it'll also be cloudier, though. those clouds will be arriving in advance of some showers and light rain that will come in on saturday. this will be mainly a north bay event, but some of that light rainfall and shower activity could push to other parts of the bay area. highs this afternoon under partly cloudy skies will be mainly in the low 80s over the inland east bay. about 80 at san jose. a wide range in the north bay. 75 at napa. 84 santa rosa around the bay shoreline. look for high temperatures in the low to mid 70s and about 68 degrees here in san francisco. now a quick look at that rain that's approaching. this is the forecast animation starting at 11:00 tomorrow night friday night. notice that frontal system will weaken as it moves onshore, but it will bring some rain to the north bay and perhaps down into the golden gate as well, saturday morning and into saturday afternoon. but it's likely to weaken and dissipate very quickly, leaving behind only a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall. reggie

millions of people are without power this morning. some are seeing flash flooding. milton is now moving into the atlantic as a category one hurricane. we spoke to residents who landed at sfo after evacuating from florida. the allen family says they didn't want to take any chances with their house in cape coral before they evacuated. they covered their glass doors with hurricane shutters. they also reduced the amount of water in their pool to make room for rainwater. we spoke to another

former bay area resident who says it's a scary time for some florida residents. >> it's very stressful. i'm a california boy. i'm used to being out here and hurricanes are new to me. >> more local rescue teams are headed east. a 26 person ground crew will arrive in trucks filled with supplies to help residents recover. california task force three is an urban search and rescue team based out of menlo park. they will also help out. >> today is world mental health day. the warriors are celebrating at thrive city with a festival for educators and the community. it includes live music, massages, affirmations and more. the warriors hope to share ways to enhance your wellness in and outside the classroom. the event is free to attend, but there is an rsvp form on the chase center website. the mental health of children and teens is also on the mind of californians first partner, i should say. jennifer siebel newsom and she is introducing a new initiative to promote tech life balance. abc

category one, but not before leaving a lot of damage. officials say multiple people were killed overnight and four died yesterday in the tornadoes that were spawned by milton before it made landfall. right now, more than 3 million people are without electricity, and the entire city of saint petersburg is without water. abc news reporter reena roy joins us live right now from tampa, florida, and she has an up close look at the destruction left behind. good morning. reena. >> hey amanda, good morning to you. that's right. well, you can see behind us that things are quiet. the storm has now passed, but there are still some really dangerous conditions out there at this hour. there are water rescues underway in clearwater, florida, after milton brought catastrophic flooding overnight. hurricane milton roaring ashore as a category three storm, packing 120 mile per hour winds, making landfall near siesta key, just south of tampa. we've had a lot of transformers blow, you

know, we can see them across the across the city and you'll see those, like greenish blue lights come up the roof of tropicana field, home of the tampa bay rays, partially ripping off in the powerful winds. so this construction crane crashing down in saint petersburg after authorities warned there wasn't enough time to secure it, and drinking water shut off in the area after a water main break. the predicted storm surge up to 13ft, flooding densely populated areas on the coast, including fort myers. you see that power flash? >> huge splash of the gulf of mexico taking over the entire pool deck here. the surge is still increasing, the severe flooding reaching far inland as milton raced across the florida peninsula. >> at least 19 tornadoes reported before landfall, this one seen tearing through a roadway. and in saint lucie, tornadoes devastating hundreds of homes, multiple fatalities also reported at a senior community near fort pierce on

florida's east coast. >> our deputies are out here. the fire district is out here. we're going through the rubble. we're trying to provide any recover anybody that we can provide, whatever help that we can. >> videos show large funnel clouds over neighborhoods north of palm beach. another tornado flipping a postal truck at the vero beach post office and ripping down this steel railway sign. and these homes in okeechobee county destroyed. the governor says 9000 national guardsmen have been mobilized to respond to the storm, along with 1400 search and rescue. first responders. there are also 50,000 linemen that are on the ground right now scattered across florida, ready to help restore power. amanda. all right. >> reena, thank you so much for your reporting. now, right now, thousands of first responders are going around florida looking for people to help. federal officials also say billions of dollars are ready to help residents who need it. gloria is at the live desk with the federal response efforts underway. >> amanda. according to fema, thousands of personnel are on the ground and the agency has

more than $11 billion in its disaster relief fund. florida governor ron desantis has activated 5000 national guard troops following the federal emergency declaration. search and rescue teams are ready to get people by air and ground and by water. new video from overnight shows families being pulled out of their apartments. you can see right there also getting on to rafts with first responders. the water is just so high, covering even up to the half of garage doors in some cases, the tops of cars you can barely see some of them. president joe biden says that local and federal agencies are in constant contact. >> the army corps of engineers will pump out water and decrease flooding. we've already directed the department of defense to be ready to provide active duty service members. >> got a $750 payment to get immediate shelter or food. larger grants will be distributed in the coming weeks.

montessori. and tonight they will have their first chance to do so in a series of public town hall meetings. now, yesterday at harvey milk elementary school, parents, teachers and students protested, hoping their voices would keep their school open. their school is one of the schools that meets the criteria for closing or merging with another school for next year. the district is planning to send all of the students here to sanchez elementary. as for harvey milk, the district is planning to potentially repurpose it as an early education center. >> we feel like our kids are being asked to pay the price for administrative mismanagement. for the past several years, and it's not fair. >> sick to my stomach, really. we all do because we feel like it's a gut punch. >> we were also there for an emergency pta meeting at sutro elementary school last night. parents say sutro is the only chinese bilingual school in the city's richmond district, and

targeting the new bart canopies at stations across san francisco. that vandalism took place along the market street corridor. abc seven news anchor dion lim spoke with bart riders, who say they're disappointed to see these new improvements at four stations. take a big step backward. >> i've just taken muni my whole life, so i feel really passionate about it. it just sucks to see someone just destroy the city. >> one after another after another. in total, more than a dozen panes of glass spread across four bart station canopies along market in san francisco. smashed. >> i have friends coming into the city and bringing them in and kind of having to make them look away. >> the destruction includes not just the cracked panes, but shattered schedule boards like

these at montgomery station. according to bart, it most likely all took place over the weekend. the canopies, according to state law, are required to protect the outdoor escalators. they're part of a $64 million project. work began in 2020 to build 21 canopies, and was expected to take seven years. so far, ten have been completed. >> i think it's a shame to know that you know, the city puts in so much effort and honestly, just to see it get vandalized like that. >> bart officials wouldn't speak on camera wednesday about the smashed canopies. they pointed us to a press release with their latest safety numbers, which they say shows a 15% reduction in overall crime from last august to this august. the shattered canopies, while just broken glass, did not give riders much comfort. >> it should be clean and safe in my opinion. and sometimes, yeah, it's disappointing to see. >> amber hasselbring of the nonprofit nature in the city, partnered with bart and the city back in 2021 to bring living rooftops and butterflies to the market street corridor at

at. what's happening with the weather? satellite radar image shows some clouds out at sea moving in our direction. that we will see pushing in tomorrow, and maybe even bringing some rainfall by saturday. right now, we're looking at the 24 hour temperature change and it is warmer by several degrees over in the east bay than at this time yesterday morning. so the east bay is likely to be pretty mild today. while generally we have a cooling pattern going on. 58 degrees in san francisco, 60 in oakland and hayward, san jose, 6156, redwood city 48 at half moon bay. other temperature readings right now looking northward 50 at petaluma and santa rosa. napa 55 degrees 60, in fairfield and livermore. concord. our warmest spot at 64. and that's going to be the pattern or that's an indicator, i should say, of the pattern we'll see this afternoon over in the inland east bay. that will be our mildest region with high temperatures there, mainly in the low to mid 80s, 83 at antioch and livermore, 82 at concord, fairfield, 85 up in the north bay. look for highs of 75 at napa, 80 at fairfield at san rafael, 84 at santa rosa. the

in the past few minutes. we did get an update from the situation from florida governor ron desantis, and he says the storm surge in sarasota, near where milton made landfall, was 8 to 10ft. so that's less than expected. desantis says there is still widespread damage, but it's not the worst case scenario that people were anticipating. milton was an extremely powerful hurricane, no doubt. researchers believe rising ocean temperatures mixed with a marine

on diddy's homes. and this video, obtained by cnn showing combs attacking his then girlfriend cassie in a hotel hallway. combs is in jail. his attorneys are asking for an expedited trial beginning in april or may. they're also still trying to get him released on bail, arguing he offered to comply with restrictive conditions. combs offered to sequester in his $50 million miami estate, limit visitors and give up his cell phone. but the judge found diddy a threat to witnesses and a danger to women. today, he'll appear before a new judge assigned to the case in southern california. the faa and ntsb are investigating a deadly plane crash near catalina island's airport. five people died. investigators say the small plane went down shortly after takeoff in steep terrain tuesday night. wreckage of the plane was found about a mile from the airport. people familiar with the airport say even under the best conditions, the runway at the airport in catalina is difficult to navigate. >> it's a300 zero foot runway. it is. it has a slope to it and

then also a step in it. so if you land on runway two, two, you're landing uphill. and if you land on runway four, you're landing downhill. >> no word yet on a potential cause of that crash. >> in today's gma first look, a passenger jet made an emergency landing at jfk after the pilot died mid-flight. abc news reporter trevor ault has our story in this morning's gma first look, an alarming diversion. >> an emergency landing for an international flight after the pilot died midair. airlines saying after four hours of flight time, pallavan lost consciousness. the initial medical intervention on board proved ineffective, and our captain passed away before they could land. the other crew members quickly rerouting the plane to new york's jfk airport. all passengers on board were booked on separate flights to istanbul. perhaps fortunate they had an extra pilot on board.
