tropicana field ripped off in tampa, officials have been telling residents to evacuate for days. among those who evacuated are former east bay residents jose dalldorf and her boyfriend michael. their drive out of tampa took an extra two hours because of the traffic caused by everyone else trying to leave. >> we also don't know what the state of our house will be at when we get back, or if we're going to be able to get back if the roads are going to be clear or flooded, or if we'll have power. >> more than 100 tornadoes hit the state yesterday before milton made landfall, the cities of tampa and orlando halted emergency services last night, but this morning, rescue crews are out in boats helping people stranded in flood waters. >> misinformation is proving to be a challenge for first responders. president biden went after former president trump at a press briefing for what he's calling, quote, an onslaught of lies regarding the federal response to hurricane helene and the planned response to milton. >> over the last few weeks, there's been reckless and irresponsible and relentless promotion of disinformation and
6:05 am
outright lies about what's going on. it's undermining confidence in the people in florida, and it's harmful to those who most need the help. quite frankly, these lies are un-american. >> president biden also condemned the conspiracy theory that the government was controlling the weather, saying that that was, quote, beyond ridiculous. he called out georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene directly for perpetuating that conspiracy theory on x. hundreds of first responders from california are on their way to help the state deployed 70 more search and rescue crews out of menlo park and orange county. that's on top of the nearly 150 others sent earlier this week. gloria at the live desk with how else? california is helping paramedics and emts are making the 40 hour drive from hayward to south florida. >> strike teams prepared, and they packed ambulances from flak, the 9-1-1 ambulance provider for alameda county managing director, chief david

6:08 am
their budget process and challenges. and they also want to make sure that they are hearing from people at all 13 of their impacted school sites. but last night, the families at sutro elementary school weren't waiting to express their concerns. dozens of parents packed an emergency pta meeting. parents say sutro is the only chinese bilingual school in san francisco's richmond district, and they don't want it to close. >> we need to have a chance to understand how this decision has been made. you know, what is the process? why is it us and for them to target schools that really have majority of people like me who are actually chinese speaking, first generation immigrant families and monolingual? this is if we're talking about equity. this is not what it looks like. >> as a few criteria to close a school is based on several factors, including having 260 students or fewer. and in the case of elementary schools, a

california is leading the way again with a new initiative that promotes a life of tech and life balance. i should say. yesterday, california's first partner, jennifer siebel newsom, hosted a roundtable with parents and representatives from big tech companies to discuss how families can manage their children's online activity. recently, california lawmakers entered into a legal battle with tiktok over its reported manipulative features. siebel newsom's new initiative looks at how families can find a balance with their lives in social medi. >> design a path forward together, where we each do our part to ensure that we take care of not just california's children, but the world's children. >> she hopes the initiative will give families important skills, while legal battles regulating social media continue. >> share is coming to san francisco. it's not a concert, though. instead, she'll be talking about her life story.

6:21 am
mainly in the north bay. this afternoon. no showers, just a mix of clouds and sun high temperatures ranging from low 60s at the coast to mainly mid 70s around the bay shoreline inland areas will warm to 75. in napa 80. san rafael 84. santa rosa. the inland east bay low to mid 80s 8283 degrees in most locations. some similar readings down in the south bay 88 san jose 82 at morgan hill. here comes that light rain. the forecast animation shows it arriving in the north bay overnight friday night into saturday morning. again, light rain producing probably a few hundredths of an inch of measurable rainfall. but it will. it will be our first rain of the fall season, and it's good to know that it's on its way. fleet week also is here on its way. friday. tomorrow. mild conditions, a mix of sun and clouds. good viewing for the blue angels on saturday. cloudier drizzle, likely. breezy in the afternoon, giving way to clouds and sun on sunds we look ahead to the weekend, you can see the accuweather seven day forecast shows that after saturday's showers, it
6:22 am
will be a little bit warmer on sunday and then going into early next week, temperatures will be near average. skies will be clear, conditions dry. just a lovely, lovely week of fall weather ahead. reggie. >> all right spencer, i've been looking forward to this all morning. and that is to talk to ginger zee because i want to see how things look in fort myers, where she is, and also to see how the whole night went. good morning. >> ginger. yeah. >> hey. good morning reggie. amanda. so the night was, you know, had a lot of water. the surge came in and it kept pushing in. thankfully, we were coming off of low tide, so we probably got between 5 and 6ft of surge, which still does a lot of damage around fort myers. certainly floods in certain homes, but it wasn't catastrophic, which we didn't expect it to be. so in the south end here, what we did have were tornadoes as well. my goodness, the tornado count was at 38, reported the most tornado warnings that florida has had in one day. at least 126 yesterday. but they're still ongoing rescues happening right now, because a lot of the areas that
6:23 am
were kind of blocked off by first responders saying, we're not going to let people in, right? so that people stayed away from those barrier islands. that's where that head of the big dirty side of the storm was. so i'd say like, we'll check out venice today. i think they'll go up to siesta key, where milton made landfall. we've got a team in sarasota that will do that. we've got all of the updates from tampa. they got that anti-surge on the backside, which is why we moved down here. we like to cover the front end, but i will say that from orlando to daytona, some of the big numbers came out of that storm up to 18.5in of rain in saint pete. some of the wind gusts were over 100, but even daytona this morning had an 87 mile per hour wind gust. the good news is milton is pulling away, so there's just a few more hours of a little bit of surge on the east coast of florida and some flash flood warnings that remain from all of that rain pushing through. but overall, i think first of all, florida did a great job getting people out of the areas they needed to and so right now it's seemingly, you know, better than it could have been, that's for sure. and that
6:24 am
south of tampa route did very well. >> yeah. ginger and i know that you highlighted the tornadoes. i heard you talking to brad mielke on start here. and you were talking about how the tornadoes were different this time around in terms of how they looked. and typically they're pretty skinny, is what you were describing. i thought that was fascinating. if you can kind of touch on that. >> yeah. >> well, you look at the damage and we drove through a little bit here, and there's a full apartment complex with a roof off over there. there's big time, you know, home damage. and so not to say that this hasn't happened certainly has, but to have that many that are that large and i imagine they'll get out and do the surveys today and maybe several f2's you don't usually see that it's usually f0 f1 that spins up quickly on these hurricane bands, but that one band that just blasted across the state was so powerful. >> well, we appreciate all the work you and your crews have been doing to keep us up to date throughout last night, and this morning and into the rest of the day. so, ginger, thank you so

6:33 am
70s up in the north bay. a wider range 75 napa to 84 at santa rosa. 68 will be the high here in san francisco. and let's talk about that approaching frontal system that may bring us some rainfall overnight. friday night into saturday seems to be the best timeline, mainly in the north bay, but some of those showers may reach a little bit south of the golden gate, over into the east bay as well. but again, we're talking about a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall, mainly in the north bay. gloria, how's traffic shaping up? good morning. >> you know, we are seeing some backups this morning with all the people heading out to work right now. but we're going to get started with your drive times, tracy, to dublin. 55 minutes, san rafael to san francisco. 16 minutes antioch to concord, 34 minutes. and golden gate bridge. you can see it's a little busier than it normally is this time of the morning, but no major delays here on that bridge. however, richmond bridge traffic is stop and go there on westbound 580 from canal boulevard to the mid span. and if you take a train, one is running about an hour late, right now. bart and caltrain are both on time.
