>> thanks for joining us tonight. disturbing video showing what might be the car insurance scam of the moment. where would be fraudsters staged an accident seeming to put the victim at fault. meet one driver who says one small electronic device made the alleged perpetrators abandon their plan and flee the scene. >> but it's crazy. like he had one hand on the what? >> the? oh my god. >> at first it just looks like a close call, but looks can be deceiving. oh my god, what is he doing? >> babe? babe? what happened? o, i don't know, babe. i got into an accident. i got into an accident. i was definitely shocked when i saw this happen. >> but natasha didn't know it at the time. but she had potentially just become the latest victim of a new and incredibly dangerous insurance scam. and her dash cam video that caught it all happening would be a viral sensation. >> i mean, i'm just happy i had a dash cam, you know, that was

able to prove everything. >> it's a scam that authorities want people to look out for, especially in cities with heavy congestion. >> people that are involved in this scam are quite often part of a larger network. they might have attorneys involved. they probably have doctors involved, people that will sign off on injuries that are very difficult to prove or disprove. >> i genuinely thought it was like an accident that happened just because of like, you know, their facial expressions that the way that they acted. i thought it was unusual and, you know, definitely sketchy. but the last thing on my mind was insurance fraud. >> in natasha's case, she managed to brake in time. oh, my god. but you can see the suspect's honda turn on its hazard lights, then back up and slam into natasha. >> my initial thought was that i was, you know, in some kind of road rage. and then i thought maybe i was in danger. >> the suspects then get out of the car, holding their heads and necks as if hurt. they begin taking photos of natasha's license plate while she stays inside and calls police. which direction are you going?

>> which way? which direction were you heading? >> towards long island. like so. this is a damage to my car. >> wabc investigative reporter nina pineda has been covering this story. >> when you got out, did you say. why did you just reverse and hit me? >> i did. >> and what did they say? >> well, first i asked them what happened. they were just like, i don't know what happened. at one point i did say, why did you reverse into me? >> and they were just like, no, we hear about this all the time. what's great about this is there is footage. there is dash cam video, and a lot of people don't have that. >> it's definitely against the law when they slam on their brakes and they back into you because you really have some form of assault. but unless you have some way of proving your story, it is your word against theirs. >> like their whole demeanor changes after they realize that i have a dash cam. you can tell that the guy, as soon as he saw the dash cam, he was quick to like, you know, as if he was about to turn around and leave. >> natasha also noticed a second car that pulled up after the crash, a red kia. she says one

of the passengers jumped in and drove off. >> oh my god. there was a follow car behind her. it's a red kia following her. oh, it's disgusting what they did. >> and i really hope that they get punishment for it. >> within days, natasha posted her video on tiktok and tens of millions of people watched. >> i did not think that my video was going to become this viral, but i'm glad that it did because i feel like we needed this exposure, you know, to make something happen. >> we've since learned that it appears the same group that targeted natasha may have targeted others. >> what if there's a kid in the car and the kid is not belted? or what if something, you know, somebody has an episode or a heart attack? it's not. it's a it's a life and death game that people are playing. >> this group is blamed in at least one other similar accident from august on the same highway with the same car, this time captured in an instagram video. the red kia shows up here to scams of these sorts have been going on for decades. >> we're just seeing it more now because there's more cameras.

>> the nypd has an entire division dedicated to investigating fraudulent collisions. >> if you have proof of it, law enforcement should be arresting those people. the district attorney should be prosecuting those people for doing an overt act. >> california has the most staged accidents of any state. new york comes in number two. florida number three. the insurance information institute found those staged crashes are on the rise across the country and cost auto insurers about $20 billion annually. and that ultimately increases premiums for everyone. >> it's very expensive to insure a car now and insure yourself as a driver. these people are after not just your money, your insurance. they could come and get your home and all your assets. >> the suspects eventually ditched the silver honda, but natasha's video was so widely seen, new yorkers identified it parked on the side of a city street, documenting their discovery on tiktok. it wasn't long before other angry people displayed their outrage, some even vandalizing the car before

police eventually seized it and impounded it. >> i do appreciate everyone looking out for me and you know, trying to investigate and get some information. >> so what to do if something like this happens to you? experts say immediately call the police and tell them what happened if there is an accident. move to safety and make sure to inform your insurance company to prove that you are in fact, the victim of a scam. >> really requires one of three things. there's got to be physical evidence. number two is you've got to have an independent witness. the third is to get a dash camera. >> while that dash cam can certainly help. experts say everyone should be aware of their specific insurance policy. >> everybody driving pays for this type of fraud because what these people are after are multimillion dollar bodily injury claims. >> in natasha's case, the suspects did file a claim against her insurance, something she hopes gets sorted out quickly. it's a felony in new york to stage a crash for insurance purposes.

>> welcome back. you know, the last time toni collette and nicholas hoult shared a screen, he was 11 and she was his mom. in about a boy. a few things have changed since then, and both actors say that the opportunity to work on the other side of the camera, from hollywood legend clint eastwood, created a whole new playing field. here's abc's chris connelly. >> it's a huge moral dilemma, you know, in terms of nothing being entirely clear in terms of life choices, in terms of what

you can live with. >> it's a classic slow burn courtroom drama with a singular twist. juror number two is nicholas hoult impaneled for a murder trial, only to realize that he might be the one who is responsible for the homicide in the case. >> what are you telling me? >> maybe i didn't hit a deer. >> an alcoholic in recovery with a spouse nine months pregnant with their first child during deliberations. the truth will do anything but set him free. as toni collette's d.a. seeks to put away the defendant for life. >> he's created this wonderful family. and he's ultimately, you know, a good person. and then somehow, through this event in his life, he's kind of dragged back into this terrible scenario where he really is, you know, between a rock and a hard place. and there's no easy way out. and then that's the, you know, the moral tale at the core of this. >> but before filming began, juror number two's savannah, georgia makeup trailer, the sight of a reunion more than two

decades in the making between toni collette and nicholas hoult, who played mother and son in 2000 and twos, about a boy he came in to say hi to me, and i remember just looking up at this towering, gorgeous gentleman looking down at me, and it was just crazy to encounter you as an actual adult. >> it's like being like being a real parent. you can always see your child as they were. >> i can't be here to watch you all the time. i know we have to look after each other, the two of us. >> it was actually such a beautiful thing to be able to work together again and get to know nick as he is now as a very good man, as a decent person. >> i worked with tony when i was 11, so i know you. we know each other and i know your kind and good and took great care of me, particularly when you're a kid, because it's a scary process to have someone really look out for you and care for you, really. and not just, you know, pretending to. it was it was it was very important. >> this is for my mom.

>> i get to just witness like how when tony walks into a room, everyone lights up around you and makes me happy that we got to do another movie together. action. >> that movie, this movie has the pacing and pleasures long associated with its director, clint eastwood. now 94 years old and still making movies. >> my agents called and said, clint eastwood wants to speak to you. i was like, well, hang on, no, i was so eager and keen. and i was like, mr. eastwood, et cetera, et cetera. i was like, oh, i really i really love the script. i love the script. and he responded very dryly. he said, if you like it so much, i guess i'll have to read it. and instantly i was like, oh, we're gonna get along great, because he's got a cracking sense of humor. >> this is really about trying to do good, trying to protect your family, trying to be a good person and maybe failing. and there is a lot to lose if i get it wrong. and i'm so sure about my convictions. >> let me just ask you one thing. did you guys ever look at any other suspect? >> we did our job, but we all

have small dilemmas each day, like doing we're doing the right thing is maybe not the easy thing. >> and so this is that on a grand scale. this is what was really exciting for me about this as a film. >> it's territory eastwood has memorably explored throughout his career, both as a director and actor, as he did in the oscar winning unforgiven. >> it's a hell of a thing killing a man. >> there was times where, you know, it would be quiet on set and i'd just ask clint openly. i'd be like, hey, you're one of the greatest actors of all time. how do you act? what do you do? you know, i've got five minutes. i'm going to pick someone's brain and try and learn. he was like, well, it's an emotional art form. don't think too much. just do. i would take him sandwiches, don't you? right. yeah. i'd either deliver and i. i made him a sandwich on set. did you? >> you made clint eastwood a sandwich? >> cheez-its. cheez-its loves the cheez-its. which occasionally, in the jury room, it would be quiet. and you could hear clint just in the corner munching on some cheez-its after his about a boy days. >> holt had no issues with his

onscreen transition to young adulthood, flourishing in the x-men franchise, and emmy nominated for his role opposite elle fanning in the satiric historical comedy the great. huzzah! working with eastwood saw him inspired by the director's quiet confidence, and i'm like, i can do a thousand takes, and i can do it. >> be neurotic. and i'm like, yeah, panic the whole time. never panicked. and i really took that away from working with clint. >> well, directors always sit behind monitors and kind of yell out clint! he's clearly old school, so he's he's right up there, you know, in there with you and close. so at times it can be quite surreal to be doing a scene with you. but then also see clint right there. >> you know, you said about your career i made some good choices and you really have little miss sunshine the way, way back i think the best thing i've ever done is just listening to what comes to me. >> well, muriel's wedding was life changing. there was no career before that. >> i'm a new person. sixth sense. >> the sixth sense. yeah. and probably hereditary. i can't believe people watch it. it's so

scary though. >> also, i'm like, even more of a fan than i was as a kid. >> these two veterans, both benefiting from clint's no nonsense, on set style. >> he'll do one take. most directors will say, oh well, let's get a safety. i hate that, i hate, i hate getting safeties. and he is so confident he just goes with it. we got it. move on. >> i love that he doesn't call action and cut. it's just go quiet and you'll hear. yeah. whenever you're ready or go. and then at the end maybe stop or that's enough of that. so there's times where you think you're rehearsing and then cameras are like, okay, next set up. and you're like, oh, wait, okay. >> do it. >> they did. it's his 42nd movie as a director. no one has said it's his last. these two reuniting actors savoring the restraint of clint's on the set praise. we all love when people say that was so good and all the rest of it. that's not his style so much, he tells you, good job, he'd say, pretty good, pretty, pretty good, pretty pretty good. >> juror number two is in select
