francisco's union square to prevent crime. >> the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi with a hammer will spend the rest of his life in prison. the surprising new details about the aftermath of the attack being revealed in a letter pelosi submitted to the court. >> good morning. it's wednesday, october 30th. >> we're going to first check in with spencer. i said it at the top of the last hour. it has been chilly. >> it has been. it really has. up in the north bay right now, we have temperature readings in the upper 30s in some spots. so pretty chilly morning, but it's going to give way to milder weather later today. but we have a cold front approaching, so no surprise that we have some cold air out there. as you can see on the satellite radar composite image, some showers are moving in along with this frontal system. they'll come later. right now that we're looking at calm wind across virtually all of the bay area. temperature readings, as i mentioned, upper 30s in north bay locations like santa rosa and sonoma. only 40 at napa and saint helena. most other locations, though, have temperature readings in the low 50s right around the bay, shoreline and upper 40s to about 50 in our inland east bay

locations. so let's check out our forecast headlines today. we'll see increasing clouds going into the afternoon hours tonight. showers will arrive and will spread from northwest to southeast as a systems this time of the year often do. and halloween looks spooktacular. we expect mainly dry conditions tomorrow. mainly dry for most of today as well, although we'll have increasing clouds going into the afternoon. high temperatures will range from upper 50s at the coast to mainly low and mid 60s around the bay shoreline to mainly mid and upper 60s inland. it's not going to be a very warm day. what's traffic looking like, francis. >> all right, well, even though it's not that warm, traffic has been pretty quiet, except that the bay bridge toll plaza where it is filling in because metering lights have been turned on since about 531. so the drive time now from highway four to san francisco has grown to 46 minutes. and also we have a slow drive time for you. westbound four antioch to hercules is 35 minutes with a three car crash off to the right hand side at somersville, but northbound 87 in the south bay. looking good. that's green highway 85 to the airport is eight minutes and we have a live shot of it here for

those taillights moving northbound on 87 towards the airport. ace train number three running 12 minutes late and bart reporting ten minute delays due to an earlier equipment problem on the track. reggie aqui. thanks, francis. >> six days to go as we close in on election day. former president trump and vice president harris making their final pleas to voters. today, both will be in the battleground state of north carolina. the vice president and her running mate, tim walz, will also be in pennsylvania. last night, vice president harris spoke to 75,000 supporters at the ellipse in washington, d.c. she asked voters to put country over party when choosing the nation's next president, donald trump has spent a decade trying to keep the american people divided and afraid of each other. donald trump was in allentown, pennsylvania, making an appeal to latino voters. his campaign continues to try and distance itself from a racist joke made by a comedian at his rally in new york city sunday. instead of

apologizing, trump said yesterday the rally was, quote, a love fest. >> the love in that room. it was breathtaking and you could have filled it many, many times with the people that were unable to get in. >> later in the day, during an interview with fox news, trump said he had not watched the comedian, but that he probably shouldn't have been there and san jose state a party to get people engaged in the election and to cast their ballots. >> the group san jose voters put on the event last night to celebrate vote early day. this was a chance to learn about the issues, connect people to resources and for many, an opportunity to fill out their ballots. for some students, this is their first time voting in a presidential election. >> getting out here and trying to meet a lot of new people, but also just relaying the importance of voting in general. i think it's a very important civic duty, and i think it's something that we should all participate in. i do strongly believe in that, as jsu is going to be opening a voting center on friday where people can drop off their ballots and register to vote.

attacker, david depape. >> it brings it home that this isn't just about, you know, media attention on this case. this is a real man who was very badly hurt here and could have been killed. >> two months after the attack, paul pelosi made his first public appearance alongside his wife, congresswoman nancy pelosi. he wore a hat and gloves. in his letter, he wrote the defendant's violent attack severely damaged the nerves in my left hand. my forehand was degloved, exposing raw nerves and blood vessels. tuesday, david depape was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. >> we're on the eve of a very contentious election. and what the message today at the sentence was is that political violence is not going to be tolerated amid this election. >> editor of greater good magazine, jeremy adam smith, delved into the topic of political violence. >> a lot of that violence is what researchers call stochastic terrorism. so in other words, this is disorganized terrorism. these are lone individuals. oftentimes they've been spending

stop retail theft, san francisco leaders want to help businesses put in physical barriers to keep cars from storefronts. take a look. these are what are called bollards. they surround the salesforce tower in san francisco for safety reasons. now there is a push to bring those or something similar, along with planters, to union square. san francisco mayor london breed announced this yesterday outside of the same louis vuitton store involved in another crash and grab on monday morning, she said the city will cut some of the red tape involved in the approval process, something that comes as welcome news to the union square alliance. >> we appreciate the support from the city to not only allow us to easily navigate the process for permitting and that sort of thing, but also to help support the financing of this tool. >> what we want are these planters and these bollards to blend in and to also not obstruct the ability for people to move down the sidewalk. we just want them to prevent

vehicles from ramming into these businesses in order to rob them. >> san francisco police said they are out in union square working 24 hours a day on patrol. that's why they were able to intervene and stop anything from being taken at the louis vuitton store on monday. they added that they welcome crime prevention through environmental design. no word yet on how much these would cost or how soon they could be installed. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> checking out our weather right now. things are pretty quiet around the bay area, but maybe not for long as we have an approaching cold front that's going to bring us some rainfall beginning tonight and continuing into tomorrow morning. first rain we've had in a while. it will be welcome rainfall. right now we're looking at quiet conditions out over san francisco where it's 51 degrees. also 51 in hayward, 55 oakland. mid to upper 40s at san jose. redwood city and half moon bay. and looking down onto the bay from mount tam. another clear, unobstructed view 49 degrees up north at santa rosa. the north bay has been our chilliest

region this morning. 40 at napa. 41 at livermore. and we have 48 at fairfield. 52 at concord. moving along to the afternoon hours. we'll see increasing clouds, but skies will be bright. high temperatures will range from 58 at half moon bay to 60 here in san francisco, 63 at oakland. in fact, low to mid 60s, generally around the bay shoreline, upper 60s in our inland areas. we're not going to see many locations topping out at 70 degrees today as the front approaches, follow the timeline. here. you can see about 8:00 tonight we'll have widespread rainfall developing in the north bay. the system will break up into scattered showers as it sweeps southeastward. then, during the overnight hours, a few trailing showers may linger into the early morning. but by midday tomorrow we'll be looking at mainly clear skies and some dry and pleasant weather ahead. reggie. >> thanks, spencer. still ahead, a brand new fire station opening in santa clara county and the u.s. forest service wants women to join their fire crews. >> the all the paid, all female training camp happening in northern california. >> fighting crime from afar. the new tools being the new tools

safety concerns in east san jose. the two mobile camera towers will be going up at the tully road east ridge business association. they'll be outfitted with cameras, loudspeakers and license plate readers. if a crime happens, police can be notified and dispatched. city leaders hope the camera towers will help deter crimes from happening in

the first place. the tech is creating some privacy concerns for some folks. >> everybody is a potential criminal, and the idea is that if only we could watch people often enough and catch them everywhere, we will know what crimes they have committed or can link them to specific crime. >> san jose already has license plate readers spread throughout other parts of the city to help solve crimes, and enforce traffic laws. >> san francisco is taking steps to make city streets more bike friendly. mayor london breed cut the ribbon to celebrate the completion of the bike lanes outside city hall on polk street. this is something the mayor had brought up earlier this year, questioning why there weren't protected lanes in front of city hall. her office says there are now 41 miles of protected bike lanes in san francisco. >> san francisco's board of supervisors approved a supermarket closure ordinance. it's in response to safeway's decision to close its fillmore location in january. the new ordinance requires stores to

give six months notice before a closure. another requirement is that the owners would have to work to find another store to fill the vacancy. >> a new coworking space is opening at san francisco's embarcadero center. it's called mosaic. it offers people an outdoor garden, terrace, lounge, coffee, draft drinks, catering and a concierge service. on the business side, it has conference rooms that can hold hundreds of people and high tech workspaces. mosaic is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. >> a group of oakland based artists will be unveiling new murals on ten columns beneath the bart platform in oakland's fruitvale station. each piece of art, coordinated with others in the group. their big reveal will coincide with the annual dia de los muertos festival this weekend. it's all spearheaded by the unity council. you can check out the festival right outside fruitvale station along international boulevard on sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. >> the holidays are fast approaching, and that means the holiday bells are about to start ringing. the santa clara

weather during the nighttime. and overnight hours, but right now, things are pretty calm out in the bay area across the bay area. even the winds are light right now. temperature readings range from 51 here in san francisco to 55 across the bay in oakland. we've got some upper 40s in places like brentwood and danville in the inland east bay, 41 at livermore and chillier up in the north bay, where it's only 39 at santa rosa and sonoma, and 40 at napa and saint helena. so you can see we're off to a chilly start today. but as we get into the afternoon hours, although skies will remain bright, we'll see increasing clouds. high temperatures will range from about 60 here in the city to mainly low and mid 60s around the bay shoreline up in the north bay. napa tops out at 60 degrees santa rosa, 60 for the inland east bay, antioch, concord, livermore 6667 degrees down in the south bay, probably our mildest weather today. highs of 68 at san jose and 68 at morgan hill. moving along. taking a closer look at this approaching cold front. by about 8:00 tonight. we'll see it swinging into the north bay, producing fairly widespread rainfall, mainly light, and the system will sort of break up

into scattered showers as it swings farther to the east and south by just before midnight tonight, going into the overnight and early morning hours, some of those showers will trail into the early part of the morning commute. but by 067 8 a.m, we'll see skies clearing. rainfall totals by 11:00. tomorrow night will be generally only in the oh, like under five hundredths of an inch for most locations, 1 to 3 hundredths up in the north bay, though a little bit wetter at places like santa rosa and ukiah. and looking at the accuweather seven day forecast we see tomorrow, halloween will bring some morning showers, but then drier conditions going into the afternoon and evening hours. nice uh- trick or treating weather. this is a level one system on our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. friday, november 1st. we'll have late night rainfall going into scattered showers on saturday. another level one system sunday. don't forget to set your clocks back to standard time and then it warms up. going into election day next tuesday. >> spencer thank you. now we're going to bring in ginger zee live with a look at what's

training camp gets underway next month in shasta county, specifically for women interested in joining the ranks. there's two components to the training. first, there's work done in the classroom and then six days of often grueling field work. >> i've wanted to be able to show women young girls, that this is an opportunity that they you know, they they can do it. when you've helped to suppress a

fire and then years later, you come back and see the impact of that, where we get to enjoy the national forest. i think that that's that's pretty rewarding as well. >> the deadline to apply for this training session is november 1st. lodging is free, and participants also get paid for that week long camp, and that takes place in march. happening today, the santa clara county fire department hosting a grand opening of its newest fire station. the new station is on madrone drive in redwood estates and will cover the los gatos mountain communities. during the grand opening, there will be a chance to meet the firefighters working there and go on station tours that is starting at 1130. hundreds of new homes could be coming to eastern contra costa county. concord based sino homes has filed preliminary applications for three separate developments in pittsburgh. two would be near century boulevard and highway four, the third near commerce place and highway four. if the plans are approved, they would total 400 homes. chabot college is reportedly witnessing a resurgence of students on their campus thanks to their new

library. the library just opened last week. according to our media partner, the mercury news has all the normal things. i mean, books, study rooms, plus space for clubs and even meditation rooms. college officials say the new building is helping bring students back to campus after years of online pandemic learning. next, at 630, to push the push to keep sex workers out of one san francisco neighborhood. but is the solution creating even more problems? governor newsom announcing hundreds of millions of dollars in new funding to address the state's homeless crisis. coming up, the impact that will have on the bay area. but first, here's spencer. >> okay, reggie, we're looking at an approaching cold front that will bring us some rainfall for today and tonight, i should say early tomorrow morning. this afternoon will be mainly dry. but what effect will that rain have on trick or treaters tomo

but that's a nice payday i spent there. people are lining up as we speak. i wouldn't be surprised. yeah. >> let's take a look at what's happening with our weather. this is $1 million forecast, so forget that 350,000. we've got a frontal system approaching. it's going to bring us some light rainfall, mainly light, although there could be pockets of some light downpours. moderate downpours as the front moves on land tonight. right now we're looking at the afternoon conditions as the clouds increase. skies will be bright. it will be mild but cooler than yesterday with highs ranging only from upper 50s at the coast to low and mid 60s around the bay shoreline to mid and upper 60s inland. so it's not going to warm up a lot as we get into the afternoon hours. here's a look at a closer look at the approaching frontal system. the forecast shows it approaching

the north bay, moving inland about 8:00 tonight. it will produce widespread showers and light rain, but the system will weaken as it pushes farther inland, breaking up just before midnight into scattered showers. those scattered showers may linger in parts of the south bay and the east bay until tomorrow morning. but then after the morning commute, we'll see skies becoming clearer tomorrow, leading into nice conditions for trick or treating in the afternoon hours. now, francis? >> yeah. spencer, things are slowing down on the traffic roads right now, and we'll take a look at some of those slow drive times for you, especially on that westbound 80 stretch from highway four to the maze. it's 26 minutes. there's an accident off to the right hand side along that way. and then westbound 80, as you continue from emeryville to san francisco. that's 30 minutes with an earlier crash at fremont. but once you get to the peninsula southbound one 101 from san francisco to sfo is ten minutes. and here's a look at the richmond bridge, where traffic is slow approaching the tolls. also just a heads up. ace train number three is running 30

to 35 minutes late because of freight train traffic. but so far train number five and seven are reporting on time. reggie aqui. >> thanks, francis. take a look at this dramatic surveillance video capturing a break-in at a tobacco shop. this happened in oakland monday night. you can see this car ramming through the entrance of lucky seven cigarettes on 12th street in the little saigon neighborhood. a group of people ran inside. they stole items from the store. when police got there, they saw the suspects either running or driving away. and so far, they've arrested two of these people. police say the investigation is ongoing. these so-called crash and grabs have been a problem across the bay area for years. now, leaders in san francisco say they have a plan to try and stop them in union square. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us in the studio this morning. lena, the idea involves putting up barriers outside the stores. >> reggie that's right. and we're talking about physical barriers like bollards already surrounding the salesforce tower here in san francisco for safety reasons. mayor london breed

wants to bring these or something similar, as well as planters, to union square. her announcement comes just one day after another attempted crash and grab, like this one at the louis vuitton in union square on monday. she said the city will cut some of the red tape involved in the approval process. rob ryder, co-founder of the storefront safety council, says similar bollards have been installed in new york city, las vegas and chicago. while he applauds the effort here, he has questions and concerns about businesses going through this installment process. when the city's infrastructure is 100 plus years old. >> if the city did it excuse the expression right, they would they would put in the bollards themselves. so they would all be continuous and they would all look the same. and it could be done in a, you know, in phases. that made sense. >> so i just want to be very clear to those who are targeting our city. we have undercover operations. we have surveillance and camera systems. we have officers doing investigations. and now we're adding another

and stop an influx of sex work, after barriers were placed on nearby capp street. residents on shotwell say the barriers have just created more chaos. >> we've seen some people driving on our sidewalk and across the street on their sidewalk to avoid the barriers. >> so residents say even traffic enforcement officers have been spotted driving on the sidewalks. i think that that's what we're looking at here. sfmta officials say the barriers are part of a pilot program, and they are reviewing their effectiveness. >> the state is investing more than $800 million in an effort to address the homelessness crisis. nearly 200 million of that is coming to the bay area. so here's how that breaks down in the bay area. santa clara county is going to receive the most money. about $57 million. alameda county will receive about 56 million, and san francisco gets $43 million. >> this is a crisis, and it requires a crisis mindset. we can't conduct business as usual.

people are dying on our watch. >> each county receiving the assistance must provide the state with what the governor calls increase accountability. newsom says another round of funding was approved in june, so that means an additional $1 billion in new investment. now it's time for abc seven mornings advancer our way of highlighting some things happening today in the bay area. >> first, after more than a month on strike, thousands of hotel workers and their supporters will march through downtown san francisco this afternoon. employees at hilton, marriott and hyatt hotels are demanding better wages, affordable health care and the restoration of jobs cut during the pandemic. they've been on strike for more than a month. they also say hotel understaffing is contributing to the city's financial woes. striking workers include housekeepers, servers, bartenders, bellhops and more. >> apple offering a sneak peek at its version of ai. today, customers can attend. hello apple intelligence free educational sessions about the features upcoming on the apple's

this distinctive home, known as the castro castle. it was the home to the late dennis peron, an activist who helped helped drive the legalization of medical marijuana. peron's loved ones are figuring out the future of the museum on 17th street in the castro district. abc seven news reporter tim johns has our story from the outside. >> the bright exterior of the so-called castro castle might look like several homes in this notoriously colorful neighborhood. but go inside and you'll experience a living piece of san francisco history. this was the first medical marijuana initiative in san francisco. john entwistle lives in the house he previously shared with his husband, dennis peron. peron, who died in 2018, was a prominent cannabis activist in the 90s. he coauthored the proposition that would legalize medical marijuana in california, and ultimately became credited with changing the political debate about cannabis around the

country. over the years, entwistle and others have turned a portion of the home into a museum honoring peron's legacy, showing some of the 50 years of struggle from the dark days when they would put you in jail for ten years for giving a guy two joints. >> and they did that. or they put you in jail for one year just for protesting by lighting up a joint on the steps of the police station. they put you in jail for a year. to today, where you can legally buy it in most cities in america. >> but entwistle says the museum is facing an uncertain future after years of living there. entwistle, who doesn't own the home, says it's likely he'll soon have to leave. he says the owners are planning to sell. as a result, he's looking for a new home for the cannabis museum, something he calls an important piece of american and san francisco history. >> people come here looking to find out this story. they want to experience. they want to understand what happened here. that is a big part of san francisco history. >> peron's brother, brian, supports entwistle's plan to

preserve his brother's legacy. the pair tell me they're hoping to ultimately move the museum into a space downtown, a place where visitors can learn about the history of cannabis and san francisco's role in changing how the nation views it. >> dennis changed the face of marijuana that it used to. people used to think is just a bunch of hippies. but then he showed that there were old people who needed it also, and that it was not just a recreational thing, but but it was a medicine. >> while marijuana has been fully legal in california since 2016, entwistle believes there's still more work to be done in other parts of the country. that's why he's hoping one day this collection will serve as a lesson in hope. >> that's the goal, is to inspire other people to do more things, to make the world a better place. >> in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> a man and his dog are safe at home this morning after the dog was attacked by a mountain lion in the santa cruz mountains. bella bella's owner, richard baker, says she walked outside and after about 20 minutes, bella returned with injuries.

she had bite marks all across her body, some even puncturing her skull, and she was close to turning septic. >> my first reaction, to be honest, was i don't know if i can can save her. >> she's got that fighter instinct, you know? and so i think that that love that she has had for life and, you know, the family is what kept her here. you know, fighting. >> and bella continues to battle an infection, but is so far making a miraculous recovery. baker says he's facing about $20,000 in vet bills, but his dog will hopefully have a full recovery by mid-november. now for a building a better bay area breakthrough. santa clara county is the first in the state to enroll people into a brand new program, providing medi-cal to those exiting incarceration. >> this means that gains that were made while in custody through mental health services, drug addiction treatment, and

support for chronic health conditions will not be lost when people leave custody. >> santa clara is one of three california counties to pilot the program. enrollees can receive medi-cal benefits for up to 12 months after leaving a correctional facility. every county in the state will be required to implement the program by october of next year. our next breakthrough surrounds an east bay elementary school cafeteria that may be a shining example of what's to come in schools across america. richmond's michelle obama elementary school is now serving 100% organic food in its cafeteria. the conscious kitchen is responsible for the food with input from famous bay area chef alice waters. she put an emphasis on fresh, local, organic, seasonal foods for kids, bringing the farm to table movement into west contra costa county schools. >> west contra costa was the first. we're working with many other districts in the region, really supporting local organic

farmers and bringing a lot of produce in. we're just starting to bring in many different kinds of food. we hope it's a blueprint for our state. 100% organic, first in the nation. >> backers say this can be a model for school cafeterias throughout america. a french newspaper claims a fitness app based here in the bay area is giving away the confidential movements of president biden and vice president harris, and other world leaders. the newspaper found the strava app allows officials to be tracked easily because of many of their bodyguards. use the apps strava records fitness activities, and users can share their workouts with the community. the us secret service told the newspaper it doesn't believe the protection it provides is compromised in any way by using the app. >> the nasdaq reaching record territory after the market closed yesterday, driven by a rise in alphabet, the parent of google, after it beat earnings expectations. the nasdaq jumped nearly 0.8% to a new record high. experts say it's due to

the growth of cloud revenue from the company, up 35% from last year. and let's go now into your morning money report. visa plans to lay off around 1400 employees by the end of the year, or more than 4% of its staff, according to the wall street journal. the move is part of visa's plan to streamline its global business. the announcement comes not long after the opening of visa's new headquarters in san francisco's mission rock neighborhood. roughly a thousand of the cuts are expected to eliminate technology positions. the rest will focus on sales and digital partnership roles. and now, a live look at the new york stock exchange, where we are up about 27 points. >> if you have what it takes to juggle three of the world's premier sporting events back to back to back. the city of san jose has a job for you. silicon valley is hosting three major sporting events in 2026 the fifa world cup, super bowl 60 at levi's, and the ncaa men's basketball tournament. san jose wants to hire an executive for a one year contract to coordinate

afternoon as the skies become increasingly cloudy, will range from 58 at half moon bay to 60 here in san francisco, mainly low to mid 60s around the bay shoreline. inland areas will be generally in the mid to upper 60s down in the south bay. we'll probably have our mildest weather with highs up to about 68 at san jose and morgan hill. now following the approaching cold front, you can see by about 8:00 tonight it will be swinging into the north bay, producing fairly widespread light rainfall. it will weaken as it moves inland, falling apart, giving way to just scattered showers by late night between midnight and 6 a.m. or so, we'll see some of those scattered showers hit the east bay and the south bay, and then the system will be gone and we'll have clearing skies going into the afternoon tomorrow. rainfall totals by tomorrow night will amount to only about 2 or 3 hundredths of an inch. in most locations, so we expect a dry conditions this evening. tomorrow evening, i should say for trick or treaters. but we'll start the day tomorrow with those morning showers. late night rain on friday. saturday. some scattered morning showers
