good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. donald trump's campaign has been trying to turn the page after a comedian at one of his rallies compared puerto rico to a floating island of garbage. but this morning republicans are seizing on what president biden had to say about it all. overnight after days of facing backlash, donald trump making an all out appeal to latino and hispanic voters in battleground pennsylvania. >> nobody loves latino community and our puerto rican more than i do. nobody. >> reporter: the cleanup following racist and vulgar comments made by a comedian at trump's new york rally sunday. >> i don't know if you know this but there's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. yeah. i think it's called puerto rico. >> reporter: president biden going on the attack. >> let me tell you something. i don't know puerto rican that i know, or puerto rico in my state of delaware. they're good decent honorable people. the only garbage i see floating out there

some republicans warning the damage could already be done. >> this is not time to have anyone criticize puerto rico or latinos. this is not a time for them to get overly masculine with this bromance thing they've got going. 53% of the electorate are women. women will vote. they care about how they're being talked to and they care about the issues. they need to remember that. this is a time of discipline. this is a time of addition. >> reporter: the former president campaigning in all important pennsylvania, putting immigration at the center of his closing message, vowing mass deportation and receiving his biggest applause with delivering this campaign promise. >> and i am hereby calling for the death penalty for any migrant that kills an american citizen or a law enforcement officer. >> reporter: the supreme court has rejected a push to remove robert f. kennedy jr.'s name from the ballot in two critical battleground states, michigan and wisconsin. he was trying to get his name off the ballot after he dropped out of the race.

he has since endorsed president trump. he said if trump wins the white house he has promised him control over public agencies. kennedy, of course, has pushed a range of conspiracy theories including about vaccines, robin. >> robin: rachel, thanks to you. the latest on the arson attacks on ballot box drop boxes in washington and oregon. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is following the story from d.c. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: robin, good morning. abc news learned investigators have evidence that the suspect in those arsons may be motivated by the war between israel an hamas or may simply be trying to s so w chaos in our election. this morning, law enforcement sources telling abc news devices used in a spate of ballot drop box arsons in the pacific northwest carried markings with the expression free gaza including one with the phrase free palestine. authorities are working to determine if the suspect who destroyed hundreds of ballots was an activist for

the pro palestinian cause or if the arsonist left the words to manipulate existing divisions in the u.s. overnight authorities intensifying their hunt for the volvo seen here, with the suspect they believe is involved. the arsons come in an inten threat environment as election officials are taking no chances to secure ballots and keep workers safe. >> election workers are off limits. >> reporter: in arizona where some people with guns showed up during the 2020 election and vote count, officials are deploying a number of security measures this year. drones and surveillance cameras to monitor activity around the building where the votes will be counted. officers on horseback to control unruly crowds. a swat team at the ready. >> there has been immense planning for many, many years relative to this operation. >> reporter: in los angeles local officials plan to use l.a. county sheriff helicopters to flyball lots from local polling stations to the central counting location where they will have armed security. >> the voting process belongs to

the voters. we're here to facilitate, make sure it works securely and appropriately. >> reporter: right now, dogs are sniffing mail in ballots to make sure they don't contain toxic materials. in a deeply divided country where threats of political violence are on the rise, election officials are going to extraordinary lengths to protect voters, their ballots and election workers. >> michael: pierre, thank you very much. now to a deadly israeli air strike in gaza that the u.s. state department calls horrifying. foreign correspondent britt clennett is there with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the state department saying they haven't gotten a full explanation from israel about why they struck this building. at least 93 palestinians kilted including 25 children. that's according to the hamas run health ministry. i spoke to an israeli military official. he said soldiers targeted a man acting suspiciously. they claimed the idf did not know so many people were taking shelter

found a family clinging to their boat. five hours. thankfully no one was injured. good news there. we got a lot more ahead including the new development in the case of the american woman who died on vacation in mexico. what her family is doing to get answers. that is coming up. now we're going to the latest on the menendez brothers. their attorney is now seeking clemency for erik and lyle from california governor gavin newsom. matt gutman joins us with if they could get out of prison by thanksgiving. >> reporter: that's what the brothers' attorney mark geragos says he's aiming for, the brothers' release by thanksgiving. his latest effort focuses on appealing to governor newsom for clemency. we understand the paperwork is being filed. governor's office telling me clemency petitions are confidential and they are not weighing in on it yet. the menendez brothers are 35 years into a sentence of life without parole for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents. clemency would change their

sentence but not their conviction for murder. last week, l.a.'s district attorney recommending resentencing after new evidence prompted him to re-examine the case. the d.a. telling me he does not believe the conviction should be overturned. case has been moved to the van nuys courthouse where the original murder trial was held. juries for both brothers were hung resulting in mistrials. menendez brothers never denied killing their parents, but insisted they acted in self-defense after claiming they suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of their fare father and feared for their lives. if a judge agrees to resentencing based on the d.a.'s recommendation it still requires the sign off of the california parole board and the state's governor, gavin newsom, a process that could take a year guys. >> george: thank you very much. now a murder mystery at an upscale hamptons resort. body of a 33-year-old woman was found inside a guest room. police suspect foul play. aaron katersky has details.

>> reporter: yes. the house is known for its exclusivity and spa treatments. it is also now the scene of a murder. this morning the urgent search for the killer of a woman whose bloody body was discovered in a wellness retreat in the hamptons. >> very quiet. very little crime here. >> reporter: police did not disclose how the woman died but said she was the victim of violence. a staff member found the 33-year-old from brooklyn inside a guest room. investigators were scene at the gated property. rosas was a guest at the hotel a law enforcement source tells abc news. she checked in with a man who left alone monday morning. the house is an exclusive spa retreat popular with celebrities. guest rooms there can cost $1200 numb a night. the hotel said we're supporting the staff and have no comment at this time. just moments ago, law enforcement officials

mysterious case of the north carolina woman. the newly filed lawsuit naming the cabo six acquaintances who were vacationing with robinson when she died in mexico. >> those responsible for her murder have not been held accountable. the lack of justice served as a painful, painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals, especially young black women when they seek adventure in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar faces. >> reporter: the legal filing detailing multiple accusations including wrongful death conspiracy and emotional distress. >> this has been two years and there's no reason that no one has not been arrested yet. i need justice for my child. >> reporter: robinson was found dead in october 2022 inside a villa in cabo san lucas. her travel partners allegedly saying robinson died of alcohol poisoning, but an autopsy concluding robinson suffered a broken neck and spine.

what kind of face does sadness make? mommy found a blue pair of leggings and a blue shirt. she has glasses so we just pop some lenses out of the old glasses we had. what about her sad face? can't forget about that. next up -- >> anger! >> for my son leo, what i want to do is make this red bucket hat, which we've used from previous costumes. you'll need black and white felt for the eyes. i'm going to make the mouth and put it on the bottom of the hat. all i'm doing is gluing with my hot glue gun. but it still needs a small count of fire. bright colored felt for the flames. couple more touches. i wasn't going to leave out my other half.

[cheers and applause] you have a lot of fans here. you know that. there are a lot of fans of "the diplomat." here you are, season 2 isn't even out yet and you've already been renewed for season 3. congratulations. >> thank you very much. thank you. >> robin: what can you tell us about your character? >> so many things. the writing deborah kahn, who created our show. i just love it. i love the specificity of, it is a political show, but it's kind of a peek behind what really happens and goes on in the state department. we truly mean it to be a love letter to the state department. it's fictional. it's silly. it's ridiculous. but it is -- [ laughter ] it is a love letter to the state department and everything that they do which is enormous for hardly any recognition.

but what i love about it is the character. such a mess. [ laughter ] it's super fun. >> george: fictional, silly ridiculous. what can we expect in season 2? >> a lot more than that. we're still solving who bombed the british carrier. i think more of it is about, you know geopolitics. we tend to blame certain regular customers. i think season 2 is kind of about looking within. maybe the call is coming from within the house. all the same fun. >> michael: you have an addition to the cast. allison janney plays vice president grace pitt. looked like you had a lot of fun shooting it. >> come on, allison janney. class act. she's everything you want her to be. she's funny smart. we would go have the best boozey dinners, do you know what i mean? she is just so fun and formidable.

"i love your smile" by our next guest grammy nominated singer actress shanice. she is on stage right now appearing in "44" the musical about barack barack obama. she's here this morning for a very different reason. she was diagnosed with breast cancer

in june. now she's here to share her story. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> michael: it's great to have you. we're going to start back in march. you felt a lump in your breast. you went in for a mammogram which is something you've been putting off for quite awhile. >> eight years ago they thought they saw something because i have dense breasts. every time i go for my test they have to test me several times because my breast was so dense. i had a lot of cysts in my breast prior. eight years ago they thought they saw something. they wanted to do a biopsy. said, no, it's fine it's just a cyst. so because of the fear, i didn't go for eight years. then i felt a lump in my breast. i'm like this cyst isn't going away. i need to have this looked at. i did the mammogram and ultrasound. unfortunately they saw something. it was cancer. >> michael: yeah. doctors, they found cancer. but what did they tell you?

>> they first told me they saw dcis, which is stage zero. it's in the milk ducts. they said it's just in the milk ducts. we'll just take your breasts out and you'll be fine. i said if i have to have one breast removed i'd rather do both. after my surgery, they said unfortunately you had a stage i, one centimeter tumor in your breast. i found that out the end of may is when i had my surgery. >> michael: you had the double mastectomy. in the course of that you said they found something else. your song "i love your smile" but at that point you said you lost your smile. >> i did. when i had my surgery and they told me i had cancer, i literally lost my smile. i wanted to come on the show to encourage women that you have to keep smiling, you know? i got my smile back. >> michael: good.

thank goodness. >> i just want to tell women how important it is to get your mammograms and ultrasounds yearly. if i would have gone sooner, i could have caught it when it was just at stage zero. i just want to encourage women to do that. i want to give a shout out to city of hope. veronica jones, dr. lee at city of hope. the great thing is they removed my breasts and were able to put in implants at the same time, so that was great. >> michael: disproportionately this affects black women, and so i think for you being here and them having see you go through this will encourage more to get checked. >> yes. >> michael: you said fear kept you away. >> yeah. i just want to tell women out there, you know, put that fear aside. if you get checked early, you can beat this thing. it's not a death sentence. get there early you'll live. and i got to give a

shout out to my husband. >> michael: the support system from the family is the biggest thing. i know your husband really well. he loves you. he loves you. your family supports you. that's another message. >> yes. i had the support of my family. flex, after my surgery he helped me clear out my drains. he gave me -- helped me take my showers. he made my meals. my kids were very supportive. my mom was there. i had all my prayer warriors praying for me. so, yeah. >> michael: i love what robin said. she said she's thriving. >> yes, yes. >> michael: we are happy you are here sharing this story. you're going to help a lot of women whether may be hesitant about going to see their doctors. >> yes. i want to say, i want everybody to keep their smile. i have a lipstick line called smile by shanice. i want women to support it because i want to keep a smile on everyone's faces.

>> george: the blue hour by paula hawkins, who wrote "the girl on the train." elizabeth schulze sat down to talk with her. >> she told us that she wrote it with the the intention of surprising readers along the way. she didn't disappoint. it is a true thriller with dark twists and turns, and an ending that will leave you shivering. a mystery is unfolding on paris island. paula hawkins "the blue hour." >> the island is cut off from the main land when the tide comes in. such a fantastic location for a novel. you could get trapped there. you could want to get there and not be able to. i was really intrigued by what kind of person would choose to live in a house on an island like that. >> reporter: a bone has been discovered by the late artist vanessa chapman and only her journals and long time companion grace hadwell, hold the answers

art expert james becker is searching for. >> the blue hour is that time of day when the sun is set but there's still that light in the sky, that peaceful blue light. also a time which you might easily be able to mistake one thing for another because that light is not clear. that's what this novel is about. it's about seeing someone, or failing to see someone, mistaking an enemy for a friend, friend for an enemy. >> reporter: hawkins sculpting a page turner about legacy, power and devotion, leaving readers on edge. some comparisons of this book are being made to agatha christie. how do you feel about that? >> agatha christie was the first novelist i ever read. she holds a special place in my heart. >> reporter: did you intend to leave the reader guessing really up until that very last page? >> oh, yes, i did. >> reporter: the final pages

haunting even hawkins. >> you know, i didn't know when i was writing it exactly how it was gonna play out at the end. it was a difficult ending for me because i was quite cut up about it. this feels right. this feels the way the story is going. that is the way the book kind of has to end. >> reporter: hawkins' first novel "the girl on the train" became a big screen success starring emily blunt. "the blue hour" seems destined for the hollywood treatment. this novel feels like it should be on the big screen. do you hope to see it in theaters some day? >> i would love to see this book adapted because i think it is a cinematic story because of that setting. no concrete plans as far as i know just yet, but fingers crossed. >> truly the last few pages are still haunting me and that's not just because it's the day before halloween. it's one of those stories where you escape into another world. when you get to the end, you have to talk about it.
