and the frights as the bay area celebrates halloween. certainly a lively night in san francisco's castro district. streets just packed with folks and some really great costumes we saw tonight, too. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm j.r. stone. halloween was something of an experiment for the city trying out its new entertainment zone downtown. >> there's plenty of booze involved. and we're not talking about ghosts. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn shows you the block party, bringing thousands out to the streets. we shall fight for that white gold. >> it was fun. it was frightening. hallelujah. it was festive. who are you? >> i'm timo. >> i'm seaweed. spirit of halloween. >> thousands of people came out for nightmare on front street, san francisco's free halloween event in the city's newly created entertainment zone. the zone allows bars and restaurants to serve alcohol outside.

in the mission district, where community groups created a safety zone. susana rojas with calle 21 latino cultural district welcomed families and joined in on the fun. >> i had to have my costume, black and white shoes and my custom black and white glasses because even if you're a cow, you got to be stylish. >> back to downtown san francisco will always be their nightmare. on front street was the second free event in the city's new entertainment zone. it comes on the heels of oktoberfest last month, which drew nearly 10,000 people. supporters hope there's more to come. >> events like this are a game changer for us. it is awesome. >> in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc seven news. >> some great images there. we're now less than five days to the election and vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump are crisscrossing the country. both brought their campaigns today to nevada. >> as president, i pledge to you

abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking a sandy our next round of rain. >> yeah, dan, tonight was all treats for the little ones and for the adults alike. for halloween. but we do have a storm coming in, so we are seeing a few clouds around from our live tower cameras right now. that is all going to be changing. you recall we did have showers and snow showers in the sierra. those showers left in time for the trick or treaters to get their festivities underway. and now on live doppler seven, i am tracking another light level one storm that's headed in our direction. as you look at the timeline. this moves in tomorrow night in the north bay. it starts to spread southward and eastward. by 10 p.m, you're going to be noticing a good soaking across the region. 11 p.m. moving towards the southern part of our viewing area. and we even have a chance of thunder. i'll be back with a full look at that forecast. coming right up, j.r. sandia, thank you so much. >> we are following the story of a brutal beating on board a united airlines flight out of sfo. as we first reported last

night on abc seven news at 11. a witness says the victim is deaf. that account raised questions for us about how airlines accommodate travelers who are hard of hearing. abc seven news reporter tara campbell got answers. >> a brutal attack aboard a united airlines flight from sfo to washington dulles international airport. putting into perspective challenges some passengers face. >> one individual was assaulted. >> the fbi says suspect everett chad nelson was walking back to his seat from the bathroom when he attacked a person sleeping in a random row. >> the next thing i know, i just hear the this just these sort of bloodcurdling screams. >> a witness in the row behind describing the scene and the victim as a deaf man when he was trying to communicate with us in sign language. >> that's when we realized that he was deaf. >> airlines are not required to have sign language interpreters on their flights. >> jan garrett is with the pacific ada center under the air

carrier access act. >> there are some requirements about trying to provide, you know, as effective of communication as you can, whether that's writing notes or whatever it is. >> texting the witness, describing the victim as doing exactly that, texting with the flight crew. >> he also just kept texting. i'm so scared. >> united airlines, in a statement saying thanks to the quick action of our crew and customers, one passenger was restined after becoming physically aggressive toward another customer. the flight landed safely and was met by paramedics and local law enforcement. and that's where the experts say a complaint resolution official or cro, comes into play. >> once they got to the destination airport, they should have been able to have the cro. you know, work with the passenger to get whatever interpreter or communication would be needed because they're supposed to be a, a cro for every airline, every airport, 24

over seven. >> we reached out to united for more about their process and are waiting to hear back. in the meantime, the suspect is still in jail after being arrested shortly after the flight landed in dulles. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the santa clara unified school district is being sued, accused of creating an anti-palestinian, anti-arab and anti-muslim climate for students. the lawsuit is being brought by the bay area office of the council on american-islamic relations. it's a civil rights lawsuit and calls for an investigation of the district. the district says it has not been served with this lawsuit, so it cannot comment at this time. however, it says, quote, our schools are beautifully diverse and we strive for environments where every young person and employee feels a sense of safety, welcoming and belonging. >> seven people are under arrest tonight for promoting and organizing sideshows in san jose and police say they expect to

have two more people in custody soon. it's part of a lengthy investigation into over 20 sideshows. the past couple of years. investigators say the organizers used social media to promote the sideshows that would draw huge crowds from all over the bay area. >> each illegal sideshow they organized involved an average of 300 vehicles and up to 600 rticipants, taking over 7 to 8 different intersections at once in san jose for several hours at a time. >> police say at least eight patrol cars were damaged when they responded to various sideshows. two officers were hurt when they were struck by vehicles. >> there is confusion in the south bay tonight over the future of a beloved farm. san jose is changing its relationship with a foundation that operates within emma prusch farm park. the park connects to six, 80 and 101, features farm animals and a community garden. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez tonight on what's changing and why.

>> emma prusch farm park in east san jose connects you to nature. it holds the city's largest barn, where four animals are housed, but a battle is brewing between a group of volunteer gardeners and the city. >> we try to make sure that our community feels they are a part of this garden. >> sharon mcrae is the president of the farm park foundation. for decades, the organization has worked to preserve the space as partners with san jose's parks and rec department. since 2007, they've run this garden that produces food year round. >> people come here and say they're hungry and we give them food. >> the foundation runs emma's kitchen garden on a third of an acre, but it's the city that operates the rest of the 46 acre park. on october 18th, the foundation was notified by the city they must vacate the garden. >> they gave us 30 day notice and we feel it's in retaliation for us holding the city

accounting accountable for what they're doing and not doing. >> volunteers and community members took to social media this week. there's even an online petition. >> community members reaching out, all concerned that the park was closing and the park is not closing. >> amanda rodriguez is with the city's parks and rec department. she wanted to set the record straight on what is happening. >> we've tried to negotiate and come to an agreement about fundraising and operations, but just due to ongoing concerns, we haven't been able to reach an agreement, which is why we ultimately decided to conclude the partnership. >> mcrae hopes they can go back to the drawing board with the city before they must leave. on november 18th. >> we're all master gardeners. are landscapers. we're we're earth people. if you will. so what we would like to see happen, we would like to see the city say, you can stay in the garden. in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> a lot more to bring you here. the clock is ticking for elon musk to respond to the escalating lawsuit over his election sweepstakes.

20 months. >> elon musk skipped a court hearing to defend his super pac's voter sweepstakes in pennsylvania today. the tech billionaire's lawyer said he was too busy to attend. prosecutors allege the daily $1 million giveaway violates pennsylvania's state lottery laws. the judge has ordered musk to reply by friday morning. >> musk is casting it as a very common sense thing that people should very easily be able to agree to the hinge point. the requirement is that you be registered to vote in one of the battleground states. >> musk is seeking to take the course of the case, that is to federal court. sources tell abc news the justice department has sent a letter warning musk that his giveaway may violate federal law against paying people to vote. musk says the money is a prize, and earnings for work as a spokesperson for his america pac. >> rapper young thug entered a plea deal today, ending georgia's longest running court case. the grammy award winning

rapper took a plea deal. he was sentenced to time served and will be released from custody to serve 15 years probation. he pleaded guilty to several charges, including possessing a firearm and participation in criminal street gang activity. jury selection took more than a year in this long running trial. >> burning man finds itself at a crossroads and facing serious budget problems. much of it can be traced back to this year's festival. it did not sell out that means nearly $6 million less in revenue than anticipated. in a blog post, the burning man ceo explained that it needs to raise $20 million by january. usually, it's around 10 million. it's not clear what this could mean for tickets and prices in the future. corporate sponsorships go against burning man's principles. >> a halloween tradition in the east bay. tonight. this very festive parade brought the spooky spirit to the streets of berkeley. the frances albrier community center held its annual halloween parade and costume

concert at pablo park. costume categories include scariest, cutest and most creative for kids in grades k through fifth. >> in san francisco, one spooky display will stay up for several more days. this halloween house is all decked out. it's on divisadero between haight and page street. the owner started the decorating tradition 20 years ago, adding new effects each year. visitors came from as far as sacramento to see the show. >> everybody having fun and from cute to just straight up scary. the bay area has a halloween experience really for everyone. >> i prefer the cute part. and in the north bay tonight we're heading to one truly frightening haunted house in santa rosa. getting an inside look from one man who sparks the screams. >> sliding it gets you moving. >> mateo crawford is a slider at blind scream haunted house in santa rosa. >> someone runs, sliding in front of the customers, making almost like a fireworks show,

lighting up the night and the sparks fly. >> crawford's blood gets pumping. >> i fell in love with it. it was just something that was out of the ordinary. >> his workday starts with getting into character. >> i looked up some scary makeup and came up with this makeup. it's a big deal. each brushstroke, it's a step further into the character. >> after crawford gets made up, it's time to gear up. >> this is called a slider box. it carries everything you will need. you got to have shoes to start off with. we have magnesium rods that make sparks while we're sliding. most of us use roller derby knee pads. extra protection for our knees. i got my gloves with magnesium rods on them.

vantage point. half moon bay is reporting fog tonight, but it is not only halloween, it is also the start of diwali celebrations around the bay area, around the globe. and i do want to talk about the forecast as celebrations get underway friday. rain arrives late at night. temperatures in the 60s during the day. it's a level one for saturday morning breezy conditions in the afternoon. temperatures in the upper 50s to mid 60s. don't worry, the showers will be out of here by the time most celebrations begin. and then sunday. warmer. gusty winds. with the fire danger going up, the temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s. happy diwali to all of you who celebrate. those of you who celebrate, i should say, here comes our next storm. on live doppler seven. it is just queued up here and it's going to get in here by tomorrow night. around this time, we're going to be seeing some downpours, 40s and 50s across the region at this hour. from our emeryville camera, you're looking back toward san francisco overnight clouds and areas of fog. tomorrow night through saturday

morning, we have rain and a possibility of thunder. and then sunday through early next week it's going to be windy, warmer with that fire danger coming up, so we still have to remain aware. fire season isn't over yet, even with the recent rain 30s to 50s out the door tomorrow morning. watch out for the fog, especially near the coast. we'll have some clouds overhead as well. and then tomorrow afternoon, rain starts in mendocino county during the afternoon hours, but it holds off until the evening for the rest of us, we're going to be in the 60s with breezy conditions. it is a level one on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale for tomorrow night into saturday morning. a light system, rain with brief downpours, a slight possibility of thunder and breezy to gusty at times. 7:00 it's in the north bay. you see that rain line shifting by 930. we are seeing some pops of reds and oranges indicating some heavier rain. it's going to be a fast mover, but not quite as fast as what came through with this last system. so 11:00 you're still seeing those downpours. east bay, south bay going into 2 a.m.

in the southern part of our viewing area saturday, and then still some scattered showers saturday morning before we finally start to see some clearing. much needed moisture will take what we can get, and right now this is looking like higher rain totals in the last system. anywhere from about a 10th of an inch to a half an inch. wetter locations picking up close to three quarters of an inch of rain in the sierra, this turns to snow 5 p.m. tomorrow until 5 p.m. saturday. it's a winter weather advisory, 5 to 10in of snow above 6000, with those gusty winds, it's going to be hazardous travel. now once the storm passes, the winds pick up on saturday. there's still onshore. but then watch what happens on sunday. they shift more offshore northerly wind when you're in that 3035 mile an hour range, it's going to dry out the atmosphere. what moisture we do get from the storm coming in tomorrow night. so here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast late tomorrow night. we do have some rain coming in for the start of november. saturday morning is a one. it's basically going to be a wet start a breezy
