this did take us, take us aback you don't think about the line. you think about the issues that are at hand. long lines in contra costa county as in-person voting opens. let me go. tempers flare after a voter breaks polling place rules. we'll tell you what you need to know before you vote. every day our roads are getting older. every day they're more exposed to the elements. the bay area's

failing grade when it comes to our roads. good afternoon. i'm kristin and i'm larry biel. thanks for joining us. we'll start today with the weather and you could see it's really gray outside, a lot of clouds, rain moving in tonight. abc 7 news meteorologist danny patel begins our team coverage now with the forecast. he's india. hi there. yeah, you know what it is interesting, no doubt about it. larry and kristen, let's take a look at a live picture right now from our exploratorium camera you can certainly see the clouds are pretty much thickening across our region as we check out live doppler 7 right now. notice there is some wet weather up to our north around mendocino county looking at the wider perspective here. this is a level one storm that is heading in our direction. it will get here tonight and spread the rain while many of us are at home hopefully. so here's a look at the timeline. 6 o'clock tonight. it is up to our north as we head towards around 8 p.m. it starts to move into many parts of the north bay and then by 10:30, 11 o'clock we are seeing some downpours across the region. it is a level one on our exclusive
4:02 pm
abc seven news storm impact scale we are expecting a good drenching at times. rain will be briefly heavy. those gusty winds and a slight chance of thunderstorms going into tomorrow morning. i'll be back with a full look at that forecast which includes your weekend coming right up. kristen larry. all right, thank you, sanders, you with the 7th day in a few minutes. uh, now let's get to the north bay and abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. it sounds like from sandy's forecast, you're in the clear for at least a few more hours, cornell. yeah, larry, um, hi there. we are uh feeling a few raindrops, so it won't be long now, i guess, but uh folks around here say they are ready for some rain, but firefighters say beware of a plot twist, some fire weather danger not far behind. i don't like the heat, so. i like having the rain and the change of the season. melissa wagner is getting a quick walk in with her dog hunter before rain starts falling in sebastopol. it helps to sleep at night when it's cool and you hear the rain. we've all
4:03 pm
been looking forward to the rains coming to stop our fire risk or slow it at least. the rain is a super welcome sight after a long hot summer, but firefighters urged the public to stay vigilant this fall. definitely not going to be a season ender for fire season, especially with these, you know, sharp transitions to northerly winds that are going to come in behind this front. stornetta says after the rain, fire danger could return later this weekend with gusty winds acting like a blow dryer. everything's gonna be primed and ready to, to burn again. the state lifting the burn ban november 1st, residents now getting a job burning brush before rain and strong winds arrive. cal fire and local fire departments have been active conducting prescribed burns to reduce wildfire risk. october is always the month of concern for us and even into november sometimes, but we made it through october and now here it is, the beginning of november, and we got we got a rainstorm coming, so firefighters reminding homeowners that fire season now lasts all year long,
4:04 pm
just really don't want people to get caught off guard because we're getting these lower temperatures in the evening. we're getting this little bit of rain and all of a sudden everyone thinks we're out of fire season because we're most definitely not. yeah, santa rosa fire department just telling us that it is canceling a controlled burn scheduled for sunday due to high winds. fire crews are asking the public later this weekend to postpone any type of yard work which could spark a fire. meantime, try to stay dry. rain on the way. we're live in sebastopol, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. thank you, cornell. the wet weather can really damage our roads, but that's only one problem. a new report analyzing the quality of bay area roads says there is a lot of work that still needs to be done. the region scored only 67 out of a possible 100 points. that's a level that stayed the same for the past 9 years, abc 7 news reporter tim johns has our details. bay area drivers have a common complaint. our local roadways aren't in the best shape. a new report from the
4:05 pm
metropolitan transportation commission confirms that it rains the area's roads as only being fair, assigning the nine counties, a score of 67 out of 100. the exact same number it scored for the past 9 years. every day our roads are getting older, um, every day they're more exposed to the elements. every day they're more exposed to traffic. john goodwin. is a spokesperson for the mtc. he says despite spending money on infrastructure maintenance, many bay area governments are barely keeping up the money that cities and counties do have, uh, for pavement maintenance doesn't go as far as it did a few years ago, the cost of materials, cost of labor, etc. the condition of roads in the bay area depends largely on where you actually are in marin county, the city of larkspur has the best roads in the region, but on the other side of the spectrum here in vallejo, the pothole filled streets are ranked as the worst.
4:06 pm
that distinction is an annoying reality for many vallejo drivers dodging potholes left and right. put it that way, we're dodging potholes that may change the radio station. garrettulli tells us it's gotten so bad that at one point several years ago, he and some friends actually started filling potholes around the city themselves, something abc 7 news first reported on back in 2022. a lot of those people in vallejo, they do come from low, low income communities and you know that's just another um a hassle for them that's just another financial burden i have to deal with due to heavy investment as well as a commitment to infrastructure improvements from local officials. goodwin expects the region's overall roadway score to increase in the coming years, something he says will improve everyone's quality of life. i see that as a strong leading indicator that we're moving in the right direction, but we're moving. at a real slow pace. the average roadway has a life expectancy between 18 and 25 years in vallejo, tim johns, abc 7 news. in the south bay, a man

is in jail after police say he was found in a middle school girls locker room in san jose recording students. abc 7 news reporter louis pena spoke to parents who were questioning the school's safety. parents and students at brett hart middle school are questioning how a complete stranger walked on campus on monday and entered the girls' locker room with no one stopping him. it was crazy. san jose police confirming there were multiple students in the locker room who shot him with a phone. the suspect did have a mobile device and was recorded inside of the locker room. one parent whose daughter was in the pe class in question said students saw the teacher acknowledge the suspect. the pe teacher saw the student or saw the person come in suppose he said hi to him. so students saw him walk by. minutes later, several students reported the stranger to school staff. he was in the bathroom for a while and he was obviously supposedly taking pictures, you know, so

it's concerning that anybody can just walk into campus like that and no one said anything school staff confronted the suspect he fled. police found and arrested him two days later, yet parents are still questioning how did this happen? right by, supposedly, um, when they told him that he had to leave, he's he just flicked them off, cussed at them, and then, um, nobody really engaged in like trying to really remove them from the school. police found the suspect in san jose with photos on his phone. the suspect was booked into the santa clara county maine jail for possession of child sexual abuse material as well as using a camera to record inside of a private area. san jose school district and have not heard back according to parents, there will be a special meeting. to speak about the incident. very upset. very upset kind of question i think the safety now it's kind of a kind of buckled me that, you know, it's, it's a reality check. in san jose, luz pena abc 7 news.

>> cheney responded by writing on social media, this is how dictators destroy free nations. they threaten those who speak against them with death. trump's campaign today says he was referring to her lack of military experience. trump also has no military experience, and she had to face the consequences of battle. >> she wouldn't be doing it, so it's easy for her to talk on the campaign trail. >> trump and running mate jd vance each courting voters in michigan. >> we have got just four days to go, four days to turn michigan red and four days to make donald j. trump, the next president of the united states. and we're going to do it. >> harris, speaking with union workers in a town once home to the oldest general motors plant in the country, janesville, wisconsin. always good to be in the house of labor. tonight, both harris and trump rally in milwaukee. on the economy, harris has pledged tax incentives for small businesses and first time home buyers. trump has vowed to, on day one, create a new cabinet position focused on bringing costs down, though he didn't offer

voter in particular found out the hard way. so if you haven't voted yet, there's a few more things you need to know before you head to the polls. abc seven news reporter monica madden explains the do's and don'ts of voting in person. >> if you're planning to vote in person the old fashioned way, there are a few things you need to know before you cast your ballot. first and foremost, there is a dress code. now. it doesn't mean you have to be wearing your sunday best, but there are restrictions on any clothing or accessories that are in support of or against a certain candidate or proposition. that's because california law bans electioneering. the idea is to create a neutral environment for voters, so they don't feel pressured to vote a certain way. this means you got to leave any campaign gear behind. no maga hats, no harris wall shirts. it even applies to buttons. but don't worry, the i voted sticker is okay. another question we get is what should i bring to the polls? in most circumstances, voters are not going to be asked to present an id to an election official, but it's another stor. if you're a first time voter. now in california, first time
4:17 pm
voters can register to vote on the day of and get a provisional ballot. you're going to want to make sure that you bring a california id or present your last four digits of your social security number to an election official, and make sure to bring proof of residency, like a recent utility bill or any other government issued mail that you might have gotten recently. when you get there, you may see people watching the process there, poll watchers, not election officials. the difference is they're volunteers here to monitor the process and make sure everything is running smoothly. however, they're not allowed to ask you for personal information like proof of voter registration or your id. selfies are permitted at the polling place, but ultimately it's up to the discretion of election workers if it's causing a disturbance and any photograph you may take cannot compromise other people's personal information. now, there's always the option to mail or drop off your ballot at one of these official drop box locations. if you're doing it by mail, though, your time is running out. it needs to be postmarked and in the mail on or by election day,

is that what it is? i didn't know if you were casting a spell on me or something. it could have been that too. yeah, just. just me. sandy, what are we looking at this weekend? well, we are going to have some rain going into early tomorrow morning. larry and kristen. but then the second half of your weekend is just fine. you know, kristen, halloween was yesterday. if you're trying to cast a spell. let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. the system is starting to move into northern california. they are getting some rain and snow right now as we look at our local radar. a lot of cloud cover and we are starting to see some light rain reaching the ukiah area. getting you down to street level radar right now. south straight state street, old river road getting wet. so this is what you can expect from our mount tam cam. it is socked in right now. temperatures in the 60s from san francisco to

redwood city, half moon bay, 55 degrees walnut creek camera the clouds are also moving in ahead of the system, 60 degrees in santa rosa, 64 in concord and sfo. camera winds are not an issue right now. level one storm moves in tonight to rain downpours at times tomorrow afternoon it's going to be bright and breezy. and then sunday, going into early next week we do have gusty winds setting up warmer weather and fire danger coming up as well. so right now we're not talking about fire danger. it's a level one storm tonight through early tomorrow morning, a light system rain will be briefly heavy at times. that slight risk of thunder and breezy to gusty winds as we go hour by hour. right now we do have that rain in the north bay. 6:00. you will notice that it is up across the north bay still 8 p.m. and then heading into 1130. this is when we're seeing some pops of red, some downpours coming through the region. 2 a.m. while you're sleeping, you may be woken up by the downpours that are coming through the east bay and the south bay, and then 6:00 in the

morning, while the north bay is starting to see clearing, there are still some scattered light showers for parts of the bay area. by noon. it's all done so if you do have outdoor activities and plans for the saturday afternoon sunday time period, you don't have to worry about the rain during that time. rainfall totals anywhere from a 10th to about a half an inch, but wetter spots like napa could pick up a little bit more and isolated locations could see up to three quarters of an inch of rain. winter weather advisory starts at 5:00 tonight for the sierra. 2 to 8in of snow above 6000ft. with those gusty winds, travel could be impacted, so that's something you'll want to keep in mind. i would carry the chains if you were heading up to the mountains, 30 to 50 tomorrow morning. some spotty showers. breezy out there tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at a bright one. still breezy. temperatures will be in the 60s. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast early in the morning. it's a one after that. that storm impact scale goes away and you will start to notice the clearing trend sunday. don't forget we go to standard time. set your clocks back one hour winds come up.

fire danger rises. that pattern takes us into warmer weather through election day and then gusty winds redevelop on wednesday. offshore winds will raise the fire danger again. so kristen and larry, we've got to be ready. these storms are not going to erase our fire danger just yet. oh. all right. thank you santa. >> all right. it is official. the giants have named their new general manager. and we will talk with zach minasian live in studio about his new role and some big news about sunnyvale and semiconductors. >> so why should you care? the impact it

evan low. caught again. his tactics called "outrageous" and "self-serving." slapped with charges that he illegally used banned corporate money for his campaign. low's already under investigation for running a corrupt scheme to give political access to big money donors. but when it comes to fighting for us... low's missed nearly 1,000 votes... from affordable housing to climate change.
4:29 pm
evan low only serves himself. and celebrated the team's world series title. an estimated 200,000 fans lined the parade route through downtown la when the giants had parades. it was over a million just saying. the dodgers won their eighth world series title wednesday night, and that ties the giants with the fifth most in the major leagues. >> i'll be honest. i mean, i haven't told zach this like i didn't go into this process thinking that zach was was honestly even a candidate. so when i, when i got word that it was somebody that i should look into, i was open minded, but i
4:30 pm
didn't i if i'm, you know, agai, being honest, i probably didn't see us sitting right here a month later once, once this process started. no offense, zach, no offense. >> giants legend and director of baseball ops buster posey. introducing our guest, zach. just officially named the new general manager of the team. so first of all, congratulations. i know you got your family here as well. so it's got to be, you know, a great time for everybody involved. what are the past 24 hours been like for you? >> it's been a little crazy. a lot of text messages, phone calls. i'm still trying to deal with an infant baby and make sure he gets his sleep, but it's been fun in a sense of making the calls to the people have been so impactful on my life. my career and their reactions. it's been awesome. so in a sense, as crazy as it's been, i'd love to relive it so many times over just to hear those reactions again. >> for sure we'll talk more about the family aspect of this, but let's get to business, okay?
4:31 pm
because just as you were being announced, blake snell made the announcement that he's opting out of the final year of his contract. not a surprise, given the way he pitched in the second half of the season. what is your feeling about the possibility of bringing him back and what it might cost? >> yeah, i mean, obviously he pitched great for us and earned the right to go to free agency, and we respect that. and, you know, as we get into free agency, major league baseball has strict rules about commenting on particular free agents. so in regards to the free agent market as a whole, we're going to do our due diligence across the entire spectrum of free agents, trades, major league, free agents, minor league free agents. every avenue we can to acquire players, we're going to look up and down. >> so you're a baseball lifer. you come from a baseball family. your brother is the gm of the angels. we're not going to hold it against you that tommy lasorda of the dodgers legend is your godfather was your godfather. yes. but do we put that low in the bio that you know, tommy, you know the
4:32 pm
dodgers. >> i think the people who know me best. and i have three older brothers and, you know, four boys in a very sports related family. you're kind of having to scratch and crawl for everything. and whether that's attention winning a pickup basketball game and whether i liked it or not, i probably developed this little chip on my shoulder that i had to prove myself and try and get that attention. so in reality, uncle tom being my godfather, i actually think it's the perfect fit for me to be in this role with the giants now, people may not know you started like as a little kid working in the texas rangers clubhouse. >> so i was told to ask this and i wish i had a prop, but you're supposedly really good at folding towels. >> i've i've folded a lot of them, and my dad was my boss, and he held a very high standard for me and my brothers. >> and he was very direct. if you're going to be in this
4:33 pm
clubhouse, you're going to be working. and a big part of that was cleaning the bathrooms and folding towels. >> man, i really wish i had a towel with me right now. so. all right, let's get to the elephant in the room. the giants have tried you tried. with shohei ohtani and aaron judge unable to sign those guys, what are you going to do differently to try to convince free agents that san francisco is where they should want to be? >> i think it's a bunch of different facets that can work into this. and for me personally, i'm extremely biased. i live in the city. i live about five minutes from the station. my wife lives in this city. we started a family here. we love it here. so from a personal aspect, trying to relate to free agents, what a great place san francisco is. and then from a professional aspect, trying to relay to them what a great ballpark we have, how it may relate to pitchers, and what a great place it is to pitch. and i've been in this ballpark as a visitor when those stands have been, have been full. those orange towels waving. and it's a pretty daunting place to come in in as
4:34 pm
a visitor. and it's a fantastic place to play when it's your home crowd. >> this is diving into you know, inside baseball stuff a little bit, but i feel compelled to ask because analytics have taken over the game. you're more of a scouting guy, and buster said that's what he is looking for. >> yeah, so the way i look at it is i, i try to stay away from putting people in the box of scouting and analytics, and the way i look at it is a baseball person is someone who's passionate about the game. they're willing to sacrifice their time to try and build the best possible team we can have. and for me in particular, i've been fortunate to work in different departments, see different departments on a daily basis, and i have a ton of respect for our analytical department and expect to work with them on a daily basis. and i'm excited about that. okay. >> full disclosure, zach is married to karina nova, who is one of our anchors here at abc7
4:35 pm
that might have had something to do with your availability for this interview in studio on your first day on the job officially, but this is your opportunity to tell your wife whatever you want to tell her. with a new baby and a new job and a new everything, the floor is yours. there's your camera. yeah, well, i definitely i definitely am here because she wants me here. >> not necessarily the giants, but in all seriousness, i wouldn't be in the position i'm in if it wasn't for her. she makes me believe that miraculous things can happen on any given day, so i owe it all to her. and watching her with nico has been awesome. and the thought of walking out with them onto that field on opening day is pretty amazing. >> all right, last second prop, kind of small towel. let's see what you do. all right, all right. is there a trick to this? what should i know? >> no pressure. no pressure. >> right. zack minasian, here's the first fold. i'll do. this is the first time i've ever called a. there you go. there's your
4:36 pm
towel. oh. >> it's important. it's important to have this side so it's easier to grab. you know, you don't have the multiple layers there. >> this has been a learning experience for me. hey, congratulations. thanks, larry. the great thing is, i don't have to yell at you in the parking lot anymore. are you going to sign a free agent or what? zack. come on. thank you so much. >> i appreciate you having me on. yeah. >> thank you. all right. take care. all right. >> i just think all the wives already think you're doing a good job, zach. so welcome aboard. all right. a mexican restaurant in san jose got a surprise visit from an all time great san francisco 40 niner. hey, let's go, everybody, let's get inside. >> let's go, let's go. >> that was former 40 niners wide receiver jerry rice encouraging people to go inside a mexican grill for free lunch. the restaurant got a $14,900 donation from pepsi. it's part of an initiative by the soda company to support local eateries. to celebrate, pepsi. and the 40 niners picked up the bill for customers eating lunch around noon. the best place to sit on an airplane and the world

on an airplane isn't a specific seat assignment. it's any seat next to someone who doesn't use headphones. apparently, 83% believe it's just proper travel etiquette to wear headphones, 58% say noise pollution from fellow passengers has reached public crisis levels. wow. okay. while that's true, the noise can be, you know, annoying if somebody is, like, not wearing their headphones, i think it's the seat right in front of the bathroom in the back, right on the aisle. >> last row does not recline. i'm sorry. that's true. my funny story. years ago, i went to the. you guys may remember. of course you went to the white house to
4:41 pm
interview the president at the white house, and we booked at the last minute. i'd worked the night before, got up at the crack of dawn the next day, and we had booked. they had booked the travel department. the only seat they could get was the middle seat in the back of the plane, up against the bathroom. didn't recline. i went, you think i could get an aisle? i'm going to go see the president. nothing. >> that's not how it works on american airlines. >> it was a long needed to play the dan ashley card. >> i think you must know, i might have gotten kicked off the plane a pretty big deal around here. >> you know, they might have put me in the bathroom, and i tried that next time. >> asked for air force one to come pick you up. >> oh, yeah. that's true. yeah. it's efficient. do you have a best friend? a new survey found that more than three quarters of adults have a person they consider their best friend, but on average, the people replying yes to that question would actually give the title to two people in their lives. 21% said they prefer to spend time with their close friends over other people. i'm kind of in that category where i have a handful of people, not just one person.
4:42 pm
