november rain. and we're not just talking about that popular guns n roses song. much of the bay area is seeing showers tonight from the first storm of the season. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. a live look outside tonight and the rain has returned to the bay area. there were a few drops the other day, but this is more significant. >> that's right. sandhya patel joins us now. it's been a while since we've said the words storm impact scale. sandhya. dan? yeah. this is been a wet off and
11:01 pm
on the last couple of weeks. this one is the most significant. we have seen of the season as we look at a live picture right now from our exploratorium camera, you can see the raindrops on the lens. let's talk about live doppler seven because it is lit up. we've seen some pretty good rainfall in some parts of the bay area right now. as we get you down to street level, this is around dublin boulevard 680. you can see stoneridge drive getting some wet weather right now heading down towards the santa cruz mountains. it is steady rain from ben lomond to highway 17. and as we look further up to the north around american canyon vallejo area, you will notice across 8-80 we are getting that wet weather. so widening the picture. this is a level one on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale. some lightning up around northern california. no thunderstorms here yet, so midnight tonight. we're still going to be seeing some steady rain across parts of the bay area. 2:00 in the morning. it's in the east and the south bay as we head towards 4 a.m. still some spotty showers around now at the lower elevations. it's
11:02 pm
been breezy, but look at the higher elevations. it's gusty, gusting to 36 at the oakland hills. it is a wet view from our golden gate bridge camera, and so far the highest rain totals in the northern part of our viewing area, about a third of an inch in santa rosa and napa. i've seen some areas, remote locations up to the north over a half an inch. richmond 2/10, san francisco two hundredths a few hundredths of an inch from castro valley to half moon bay. it is a level one on our storm impact scale. we are looking at through early tomorrow morning. rain briefly heavy, slight possibility of thunder and breezy to gusty winds. i'll be back to let you know about how long this wet weather will last. if it's going to impact your weekend plans, plus a look at the fire danger that's coming up. dan. >> sandhya. thank you. >> and as sandhya has been reporting, firefighters in the north bay are watching the weather and hoping that the fall storm will help reduce fire danger before things could pivot back. >> as gusty winds are likely to return this weekend, it's really don't want people to get caught off guard because we're getting
11:03 pm
these lower temperatures in the evening. >> we're getting this little bit of rain and all of a sudden everyone thinks we're out of fire season because we're most definitely not. >> no, cal fire and local fire departments have been active conducting prescribed burns to reduce wildfire risk, but they remind homeowners that fire season is now year round. >> turning now to the latest on the election now just days away. kamala harris and donald trump are focusing their campaigns in those key battleground states. both of them held events in wisconsin once again making contrasting pitches for the presidency. in this final sprint to election day. trump focusing in on fixing problems of the biden harris administration on tuesday. >> you have to stand up and you have to tell kamala that you've had enough. you can't take it anymore. you're the worst vice president in history. you're the worst border czar in the history of the world. we're not going to let you destroy our country. kamala, you're fired. >> and harris appealed to an
11:04 pm
alternative to trump's. quote, hate and division. unlike donald trump, i don't believe that people who disagree with me are the enemy. >> he wants to put them in jail. >> i'll give them a seat at the table. >> as of today, more than 68 million people have already voted by mail or in person. that's according to the university of florida's election lab, which keeps very close tabs on this. and with the election four days away, do you know what is and isn't allowed at the polls? there are rules from selfies to dress code. abc seven news reporter monica madden has details on the do's and don'ts of voting in person. >> if you're planning to vote in person, the old fashioned way, there are a few things you need to know before you cast your ballot. first and foremost, there is a dress code. now, it doesn't mean you have to be wearing your sunday best, but there are restrictions on any clothing or accessories that are in support of or against a certain candidate or proposition. that's because california law bans
11:05 pm
electioneering. the idea is to create a neutral environment for voters so they don't feel pressured to vote a certain way. this means you got to leave any campaign gear behind. no maga hats, no harris wall shirts. it even applies to buttons. but don't worry, the i voted sticker is okay. another question we get is what should i bring to the polls? in most circumstances, voters are not going to be asked to present an id to an election official, but it's another story if you're a first time voter. now, in california, first time voters can register to vote on the day of and get a provisional ballot. you're going to want to make sure that you bring a california id or present your last four digits of your social security number to an election official, and make sure to bring proof of residency, like a recent utility bill or any other government issued mail that you might have gotten recently. when you get there, you may see people watching the process there. poll watchers, not election officials. the difference is they're volunteers here to monitor the process and make sure everything is running smoothly. however, they're not
11:06 pm
allowed to ask you for personal information like proof of voter registration or your id. selfies are permitted at the polling place, but ultimately it's up to the discretion of election workers. if it's causing a disturbance and any photograph you may take cannot compromise other people's personal information. now, there's always the option to mail or drop off your ballot at one of these official drop box locations. if you're doing it by mail, though, your time is running out. it needs to be postmarked and in the mail on or by election day, which is next tuesday, november 5th in san francisco. monica madden, abc7 news. >> in the east bay, five early voting locations opened their doors in contra costa county today. election officials want people to know they are prepared and staffed up for election day. hundreds of people lined up at this one at walnut creek city hall. >> turnout perspective in 2020, returns are higher than what we've seen so far, but we but we do expect there to be a big uptick this weekend. there will
11:07 pm
be a big spike to get us to that, to that 85 plus percent turnout by the end, they are working to get more ballot devices operating. >> so they can cut down on the lines. you can always skip the wait by dropping off your ballot at a post office or one of the many drop boxes. the county's voting sites will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day. lyft and uber users can receive a 50% discount on rides to their polling station on election day, according to a report released by lyft. people without cars are less likely to vote. lyft users can preload the code vote 24 into their app until november 5th. uber is offering half off rideshare costs of up to $10 on tuesday, and. abc seven news is here to help you navigate through all the races and measures on the ballot. we have a voter guide on abc seven news.com where you can look up races specific to your county. you'll find it under the election section. >> and moving to on some other news in san jose, a man is in jail accused of entering a middle school girls locker room and recording students inside. police say the man ran when staff at bret hart middle school
11:08 pm
confronted him inside the building on monday. on wednesday, he was found and detained. police say they found photos on his phone. and parents want to know how something like this could even happen. >> it's concerning that anybody can just walk into campus like that and no one say anything. you walk right by. supposedly, when they told him that he had to leave, he he just flipped him off and cussed at them and then nobody really engaged into, like, trying to really remove him from the school. >> he's been booked for possession of child sexual abuse material, and the recording of juveniles with a hidden camera in a private area on the peninsula. >> tonight, the public finally got its chance to ask about the slimy spill at a tesla facility in palo alto. that spill, which we've been tracking, happened more than two weeks ago. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there as people fired off questions at city officials. >> what exactly is in this bright green sub? >> i do have a question about how it was determined, what was spilled.
11:09 pm
